Atha kho āyasmā Samiddhi rattiyā paccūsa-samayaṃ paccu-ṭṭhāya yena tapodo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Gattāni parisiñcituṃ.|| ||

Tapode gattāni parisiñcitvā pacc’uttaritvā eka-cīvaro aṭṭhāsi gattāni pubb-ā-paya-māno.|| ||

Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkanta-vaṇṇā kevala-kappaṃ tapodaṃ obhāsetvā yen’āyasmā Samiddhi,||
ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā ekamattaṃ aṭṭhāsi,||
eka-m-antaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā āyasmantaṃ Samiddhiṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Dhāresi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcā’ ti?|| ||

Na kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Tvaṃ pan’āvuso,||
dhāresi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcāti?|| ||

Aham pi kho bhikkhu,||
na dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Dhāresi pana tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti.|| ||

Na kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti.|| ||

Tvaṃ pan’āvuso,||
dhāresi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti?|| ||

Aham pi kho bhikkhu,||
na dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā.|| ||

Uggaṇhāhi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Pariyāpuṇāhi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Attha-saṃhito bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddeso ca vibhaṅgo ca ādiBrahma-cariyako’ ti.|| ||

Idam avoca sā devatā,||
idaṃ vatvā tatth’evantara-dhāyi.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā Samiddhi tassā rattiyā accayena yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā Samiddhi Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca.|| ||

Idh’āhaṃ bhante,||
rattiyā paccūsa-samayaṃ paccu-ṭṭhāya yena tapodo1 ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Gattāni parisiñcituṃ.|| ||

[193] tapode gattāni parisiñcitvā pacc’uttaritvā eka-cīvaro aṭṭhāsiṃ gattāni pubb-ā-paya-māno.|| ||

Atha kho bhante,||
aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkanta-vaṇṇo kevala-kappaṃ tapodaṃ obhāsetvā yenāhaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhitā kho bhante,||
sā devatā maṃ etad avoca:|| ||

Dharesi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcāti?|| ||

Evaṃ vutte ahaṃ bhante,||
taṃ devataṃ etad avocaṃ: na kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Tvaṃ pana āvuso,||
dhāresi bhaddekaratassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcāti?|| ||

Aham pi kho bhikkhu na dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅghañca.|| ||

Dhāresi pana tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti?|| ||

Na kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti.|| ||

Tvaṃ pan’āvuso,||
dhāresi bhaddekaratti gāthāti?|| ||

Aham pi kho bhikkhu,||
na dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti.|| ||

Uggaṇhāhi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Pariyāpuṇāhi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca,||
vibhaṅgañca.|| ||

Dhārehi tvaṃ bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca,||
attha-saṃhito bhikkhu,||
bhaddekarattassa uddeso ca vibhaṅgo ca ādiBrahma-cariyakoti.|| ||

Idam avoca bhante,||
sā devatā.|| ||

Idaṃ vatvā tatth’evantara-dhāyi.|| ||

Sādhu me bhante,||
Bhagavā bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca desetuti.|| ||

Tena hi bhikkhu,||
suṇāhi,||
sādhukaṃ mana-sikarohi,||
bhāsissāmīti.|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho āyasmā Samiddhi Bhagavato paccassosi.|| ||

Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

Atītaṃ nānvāgameyya nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṃ,||
Yadatītaṃ pahīnaṃ taṃ appattañ ca anāgataṃ.|| ||

Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṃ tattha tattha vipassati,||
Asaṃhīraṃ asaṅkuppaṃ taṃ vidvā manubrūhaye.|| ||

Ajjeva kiccaṃ ātappaṃ ko jaññā maraṇaṃ suve,||
Na hi no saṅgāraṃ tena mahāsenena maccunā.|| ||

Evaṃ vihāriṃ ātāpiṃ ahorattamatanditaṃ,||
Taṃ ve bhaddekarattoti santo ācikkhate munīti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Idaṃ vatvā Sugato uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ pāvisi.|| ||

Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ acira-pakkantassa Bhagavato etad ahosi: ‘idaṃ kho no āvuso,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho.|| ||

Atītaṃ nānvāgameyya nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṃ,||
Yadatītaṃ pahīnaṃ taṃ appattañ ca anāgataṃ.|| ||

Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṃ tattha tattha vipassati,||
Asaṃhīraṃ asaṅkuppaṃ taṃ vidvā manubrūhaye.|| ||

Ajjeva kiccaṃ ātappaṃ ko jaññā maraṇaṃ suve,||
Na hi no saṅgāraṃ tena mahāsenena maccunā.|| ||

Evaṃ vihāriṃ ātāpiṃ ahorattamatanditaṃ,||
Taṃ ve bhaddekarattoti santo ācikkhate munīti.|| ||

Ko nu kho imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajeyyāti.|| ||

[194] Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ etad ahosi: ‘ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito,||
sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ.|| ||

Pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Yannūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho te bhikkhū yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā Mahā-Kaccānena saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu.|| ||

Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vitisāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etad avocuṃ: ‘idaṃ kho no āvuso Kaccāna,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

Atītaṃ nānvāgameyya nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṃ,||
Yadatītaṃ pahīnaṃ taṃ appattañ ca anāgataṃ.|| ||

Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṃ tattha tattha vipassati,||

amhākaṃ etad ahosi: ‘ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito,||
sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ,||
pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Yannūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā’ ti.|| ||

Vibhajatāyasmā Mahā Kaccānoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso,||
puriso sāratthiko sāgaravesī sārapariyesanaṃ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato [195] ati-k-kamm’eva mūlaṃ ati-k-kamma khandhaṃ sākhāpalāse sāraṃ pariyesitabbaṃ maññeyya.|| ||

Evaṃ sampadam idaṃ,||
āyasmantānaṃ satthari sammukhībhute taṃ Bhagavantaṃ atisitvā amhe etam atthaṃ paṭipucjitabbaṃ maññatha.|| ||

So ‘h’āvuso Bhagavā jānaṃ jānāti,||
passaṃ passati,||
cakkhu-bhūto ñāṇa-bhūto dhamma-bhūto brahma-bhūto vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmi Tathāgato.|| ||

So c’eva panetassa kālo ahosi yaṃ Bhagavantaṃ yeva etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha.|| ||

Yathā vo Bhagavā vyākareyya,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāthāti.|| ||

Addh’āvuso Kaccāna,||
Bhagavā jānaṃ jānāti,||
passaṃ passati cakkhu-bhūto ñāṇa-bhūto dhamma-bhūto vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmi Tathāgato.|| ||

So c’eva panetassa kālo ahosi yaṃ Bhagavantaṃ yeva etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyya*ma.|| ||

Yathā no Bhagavā vyākareyya,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāma.|| ||

Apic’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthuc’eva saṃvaṇṇito.|| ||

Sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ.|| ||

Pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Vibhajatāyasmā Mahā Kaccāno agaruṃ karitvāti.|| ||

Tena āvuso,||
suṇātha,||
sādhukaṃ manasi karotha,||
bhāsissāmīti.|| ||

Evam āvuso ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Kaccānassa paccassosuṃ.|| ||

Āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno etad avoca:|| ||

Yaṃ kho no āvuso,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

Atītaṃ nānvāgameyya nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṃ,||
Yadatītaṃ pahīnaṃ taṃ appattañ ca anāgataṃ.|| ||

Kathañcāvuso,||
atītaṃ anvāgameti: iti me cakkhuṃ [196] ahosi atītam addhānaṃ,||
iti rūpāti tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandanto atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Iti me sotaṃ ahosi atītamaddānaṃ,||
iti saddāti tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandanto atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Iti me ghānaṃ ahosi atītam addhānaṃ,||
iti ghāndhāti tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandanto atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Iti me jivhā ahosi atītam addhānaṃ,||
iti rasāti tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandanto atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Iti me kāyo ahosi atītam addhānaṃ,||
iti me phoṭṭhabbāti tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandanto atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Iti me mano ahosi atītam addhānaṃ,||
iti dhammāti tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandato atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Evaṃ kho āvuso atītaṃ anvāgameti.|| ||

Kathañcāvuso,||
atītaṃ nānvāgameti: iti me cakkhuṃ ahosi atitamaddhānaṃ,||
iti rūpāti na tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Na chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa na tadabhinandati.|| ||

Na tadabhinandanto atītaṃ nānvāgameti.|| ||

Iti me sotaṃ ahosi atītamaddhānaṃ,||
iti me saddāti na tattha chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhaṃ hoti viññāṇaṃ.|| ||

Na chanda-rāgapaṭibaddhattā viññāṇassa tadabhinandati.|| ||

Na tadabhinandanto atītaṃ nānvāgameti.|| ||

Cetaso paṇidhānapaccayā tadabhinandati.|| ||

Tadabhinandanto anāgataṃ paṭikaṅkhati.|| ||

Iti me sotaṃ siyā anāgatam addhānaṃ,||
iti saddāti a-p-paṭiladdhassa paṭilābhāya cittaṃ paṇidahati.|| ||

Cetaso paṇidhānapaccayā tadabhinandati.|| ||

Evaṃ kho āvuso anāgataṃ paṭikaṅkhati.|| ||

Kathañcāvuso,||
anāgataṃ na paṭikaṅkhati: iti me cakkhuṃ siyā anāgatam addhānaṃ,||
iti rūpāti a-p-paṭiladdhassa paṭilābhāya cittaṃ na paṇidahati.|| ||

Cetaso appaṇidhānapaccayā na tadabhinandati.|| ||

Na tadabhinandanto anāgataṃ na paṭikaṅkhati.|| ||

Atītaṃ nānvāgameyya nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṃ,||
Yadatītaṃ pahīnaṃ taṃ appattañ ca anāgataṃ.|| ||

Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṃ tattha tattha vipassati,||
Asaṃhīraṃ asaṅkuppaṃ taṃ vidvā manubrūhaye.|| ||

Ajjeva kiccaṃ ātappaṃ ko jaññā maraṇaṃ suve,||
Na hi no saṅgāraṃ tena mahāsenena maccunā.|| ||

Evaṃ vihāriṃ ātāpiṃ ahorattamatanditaṃ,||
Taṃ ve bhaddekarattoti satto ācikkhate munīti.|| ||

Imassa kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
Bhagavato saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa evaṃ vitthārena atthaṃ ājānāmi.|| ||

Ākaṅkha-mānā ca pana tumhe,||
āyasmanto,||
Bhagavantaṃ yeva upasaṅkamitvā etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha.|| ||

Yathā vo Bhagavā vyākaroti.|| ||

Tathā naṃ dhāreyyātāti.|| ||

Atha kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Kaccānassa bhāsitaṃ abhinan’ditvā anumo-ditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu,||
eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū Bhagavantaṃ etad avocuṃ: yaṃ kho no bhante,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho.|| ||

Atītaṃ nānvāgameyya nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṃ,||

Tesaṃ no bhante amhākaṃ etad ahosi: ‘ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito,||
sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārinaṃ.|| ||

Pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Yannūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho mayaṃ bhante,||
yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkamimha.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipucchimha.|| ||

Tesaṃ no bhante,||
āyasmatā Mahā-Kaccānena imehi ākārehi imehi padehi imehi vyañjanehi attho vibhattoti.|| ||

Paṇḍito bhikkhave Mahā Kaccāno.|| ||

Mahāpañño bhikkhave Mahā Kaccāno maṃ ce pi tumhe bhikkhave,||
etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha,||
aham pi taṃ evam evaṃ vyākareyyaṃ,||
yathā taṃ Mahā-Kaccānena vyākataṃ.|| ||

Eso c’eva tassa attho evañca naṃ dhārethāti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā,||
atta-manā te bhikkhū Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.|| ||
