In Myanmar renderings, An\u01cethapi\u00d3\u010fika is usually termed as \u2018<em>thuthay<\/em>\u2019 whereas Citta is usually rendered as \u2018<em>thukywe<\/em>\u2019. Both these Myanmar terms are synonymous.)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3>(a)\u00a0\u00a0 His Past Aspiration<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The future Citta the householder was reborn into a worthy family in the city of Ha\u00d1s\u01cevat\u012b, during the time of Buddha Padumuttara. On one occasion, while listening to the<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>1426<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Buddha&#8217;s discourse, he saw a certain disciple being named by Him as the foremost in expounding the Doctrine. The worthy man aspired to that distinction. After making an extraordinary offering, he expressed his wish that, at some future existence, he would be designated by a Buddha as the foremost disciple in expounding the Doctrine.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3>In His Existence as The Son of A Hunter<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The future Citta was reborn either in the deva realm or the human realm for a hundred thousand world-cycles. During the time of Buddha Kassapa, he was born as a son of a hunter. When he came of age, he took up the vocation of hunter. One rainy day, he went to the forest to hunt, carrying a spear. While searching for games, he saw a <em>bhikkhu <\/em>with his head covered with his robe of dirt-rags, sitting on a rock platform inside a natural cavern. He thought that must be a <em>bhikkhu <\/em>meditating. He hurried home and had two pots cooked simultaneously, one in which rice was boiled and the other for meat.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When the rice and the meat had been cooked, he saw two <em>bhikkhus <\/em>coming to his house for alms-food. He invited them into his house, took their alms-bowls, and requested them to accept his offering of alms-food out of compassion for him. Having had the two <em>bhikkhus <\/em>seated, he let his family to take care of the offering of alms-food to them while he hurried back to the forest to offer the alms-food to the meditating <em>bhikkhu<\/em>. He carried the rice and the meat in a pot properly covered with banana leaves. On the way, he gathered various kinds of flowers and wrapped them in some leaves. He went to the <em>bhikkhu <\/em>in the cavern, filled his alms-bowl with the alms-food and offered it and the flowers to him reverentially.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Then he sat in a suitable place and said to the <em>bhikkhu<\/em>: \u201aJust as this offering of delicious food and flowers makes me very glad, may I, in the future existences in the course of <em>sa\u00d1s\u01cera<\/em>, be blessed with all kinds of gifts. May flowers of five hues shower down on me!\u201b The <em>bhikkhu <\/em>saw that the donor was destined to gain sufficient merit leading to attaining of <em>magga-phala <\/em>and taught him in detail the method of contemplating the thirty-two aspects of parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>That son of the hunter (the future Citta) lived a life full of good deeds and at his death, he was reborn in the deva realm. There, he was blessed with showers of flowers that rained down on him up to knee-deep.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>CITTA Ch\u1ee7 nh\u00e0<br \/>(C\u1ea3 An\u01cethapi\u00d3\u010fika v\u00e0 Citta \u0111\u1ec1u \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c g\u1ecdi l\u00e0 gahapati, phi\u00ean \u00e2m ti\u1ebfng Anh l\u00e0 &#8220;Householder&#8221;. Ng\u01b0\u1eddi \u0111\u00e0n \u00f4ng x\u1ee9ng \u0111\u00e1ng khao kh\u00e1t s\u1ef1 kh\u00e1c bi\u1ec7t \u0111\u00f3. Sau khi c\u00fang d\u01b0\u1eddng phi th\u01b0\u1eddng, \u00f4ng b\u00e0y t\u1ecf nguy\u1ec7n v\u1ecdng r\u1eb1ng, \u1edf m\u1ed9t th\u1eddi \u0111i\u1ec3m n\u00e0o \u0111\u00f3 trong t\u01b0\u01a1ng lai, \u00f4ng s\u1ebd \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c \u0110\u1ee9c Ph\u1eadt ch\u1ec9 \u0111\u1ecbnh l\u00e0m \u0111\u1ec7 t\u1eed quan tr\u1ecdng nh\u1ea5t trong vi\u1ec7c gi\u1ea3ng d\u1ea1y Gi\u00e1o l\u00fd.<br \/>Trong s\u1ef1 t\u1ed3n t\u1ea1i c\u1ee7a anh \u1ea5y v\u1edbi t\u01b0 c\u00e1ch l\u00e0 Con trai c\u1ee7a m\u1ed9t th\u1ee3 s\u0103n<br \/>Citta trong t\u01b0\u01a1ng lai \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c t\u00e1i sinh trong c\u00f5i deva ho\u1eb7c c\u00f5i ng\u01b0\u1eddi trong m\u1ed9t tr\u0103m ngh\u00ecn chu k\u1ef3 th\u1ebf gi\u1edbi. V\u00e0o th\u1eddi \u0110\u1ee9c Ph\u1eadt Kassapa, \u00f4ng \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c sinh ra nh\u01b0 m\u1ed9t con trai c\u1ee7a m\u1ed9t th\u1ee3 s\u0103n. Khi \u0111\u1ebfn tu\u1ed5i tr\u01b0\u1edfng th\u00e0nh, anh ta b\u1eaft \u0111\u1ea7u thi\u00ean ch\u1ee9c c\u1ee7a m\u1ed9t ng\u01b0\u1eddi th\u1ee3 s\u0103n. M\u1ed9t ng\u00e0y m\u01b0a, anh ta v\u00e0o r\u1eebng s\u0103n b\u1eafn, mang theo m\u1ed9t ng\u1ecdn gi\u00e1o. Trong khi t\u00ecm ki\u1ebfm c\u00e1c tr\u00f2 ch\u01a1i, anh ta nh\u00ecn th\u1ea5y m\u1ed9t v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u tr\u00f9m \u0111\u1ea7u v\u1edbi chi\u1ebfc \u00e1o cho\u00e0ng b\u1eb1ng v\u1ea3i v\u1ee5n, \u0111ang ng\u1ed3i tr\u00ean m\u1ed9t b\u1ec7 \u0111\u00e1 b\u00ean trong m\u1ed9t hang \u0111\u1ed9ng t\u1ef1 nhi\u00ean. Anh ta ngh\u0129 r\u1eb1ng \u0111\u00f3 ph\u1ea3i l\u00e0 m\u1ed9t v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u \u0111ang thi\u1ec1n \u0111\u1ecbnh. Anh v\u1ed9i v\u00e3 v\u1ec1 nh\u00e0 v\u00e0 n\u1ea5u \u0111\u1ed3ng th\u1eddi hai c\u00e1i n\u1ed3i, m\u1ed9t c\u00e1i n\u1ea5u c\u01a1m v\u00e0 m\u1ed9t c\u00e1i n\u1ea5u th\u1ecbt.<br \/>Khi c\u01a1m v\u00e0 th\u1ecbt \u0111\u00e3 \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c n\u1ea5u ch\u00edn, \u00f4ng th\u1ea5y c\u00f3 hai v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u \u0111\u1ebfn nh\u00e0 \u00f4ng \u0111\u1ec3 kh\u1ea5t th\u1ef1c. Anh ta m\u1eddi h\u1ecd v\u00e0o nh\u00e0, l\u1ea5y b\u00e1t kh\u1ea5t th\u1ef1c c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd, v\u00e0 y\u00eau c\u1ea7u h\u1ecd nh\u1eadn th\u1ee9c \u0103n kh\u1ea5t th\u1ef1c c\u1ee7a anh ta v\u00ec l\u00f2ng t\u1eeb bi \u0111\u1ed1i v\u1edbi anh ta. Khi \u0111\u00e3 c\u00f3 hai v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u ng\u1ed3i xu\u1ed1ng, \u00f4ng \u0111\u1ec3 gia \u0111\u00ecnh lo vi\u1ec7c c\u00fang d\u01b0\u1eddng th\u1ef1c ph\u1ea9m kh\u1ea5t th\u1ef1c cho h\u1ecd trong khi \u00f4ng v\u1ed9i v\u00e0ng quay tr\u1edf l\u1ea1i r\u1eebng \u0111\u1ec3 c\u00fang d\u01b0\u1eddng th\u1ef1c ph\u1ea9m cho v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u \u0111ang ng\u1ed3i thi\u1ec1n. Anh ch\u1edf g\u1ea1o v\u00e0 th\u1ecbt v\u00e0o m\u1ed9t c\u00e1i n\u1ed3i \u0111\u1eady k\u00edn b\u1eb1ng l\u00e1 chu\u1ed1i. Tr\u00ean \u0111\u01b0\u1eddng \u0111i, anh h\u00e1i nhi\u1ec1u lo\u1ea1i hoa kh\u00e1c nhau v\u00e0 g\u00f3i ch\u00fang v\u00e0o m\u1ed9t v\u00e0i chi\u1ebfc l\u00e1. Anh ta \u0111i \u0111\u1ebfn v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u trong hang, \u0111\u1ed5 \u0111\u1ea7y th\u1ee9c \u0103n kh\u1ea5t th\u1ef1c v\u00e0o b\u00e1t c\u1ee7a m\u00ecnh v\u00e0 c\u00fang d\u01b0\u1eddng n\u00f3 c\u00f9ng nh\u1eefng b\u00f4ng hoa cho anh ta m\u1ed9t c\u00e1ch t\u00f4n k\u00ednh.<br \/>Sau \u0111\u00f3, \u00f4ng ng\u1ed3i v\u00e0o m\u1ed9t n\u01a1i th\u00edch h\u1ee3p v\u00e0 n\u00f3i v\u1edbi v\u1ecb t\u1ef3 kh\u01b0u: \u201aVi\u1ec7c c\u00fang d\u01b0\u1eddng hoa v\u00e0 th\u1ee9c \u0103n ngon n\u00e0y l\u00e0m cho t\u00f4i r\u1ea5t vui m\u1eebng, c\u1ea7u cho t\u00f4i, trong t\u01b0\u01a1ng lai hi\u1ec7n h\u1eefu trong kh\u00f3a h\u1ecdc sa\u00d1s\u01cera, \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c ban ph\u01b0\u1edbc v\u1edbi t\u1ea5t c\u1ea3 c\u00e1c lo\u1ea1i qu\u00e0 t\u1eb7ng. At the time of his birth, flowers of five hues rained down over the whole town up to knee-deep. His parents said: \u201aOur son has brought his own name. For he has delighted the mind of the whole town by being blessed with the wondrous floral tribute of five colours. Let us call him \u2018Citta\u2019.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When young Citta came of age, he was married and at the death of his father, he succeeded to the office of the Rich Man of Macchik\u01cesa\u00d3\u010fa. At that time, the Venerable Mah\u01cen\u01cema, one of the Group of five Ascetics, came to Macchik\u01cesa\u00d3\u010fa. Citta was full of reverential adoration for Venerable Mah\u01cen\u01cema for his serenity. He took the alms-bowl of the Venerable, and invited him to his house for offering of alms-food. After the Venerable had finished his meal, Citta took him to his orchard, had a monastery built for him and requested him to reside there as well as to accept daily alms-food from his house. Venerable Mah\u01cen\u01cema consented out of compassion, and seeing that the householder was destined to acquire sufficient merit leading to attainment of <em>magga-phala<\/em>, he taught a discourse to him extensively on the six internal sense-bases and the six external sense- bases, i.e. sense objects. This subject was taught to Citta because he was a person of middling intelligence, <em>majjhu\u00d1-puggala<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As Citta had, in his past existences, cultivated Insight into the impermanence, woefulness (<em>dukkha<\/em>) and unsubstantiality of mind and matter which are conditioned phenomena, his<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>present efforts in Insight-meditation led him to the enlightenment stage of Never-Returner (<em>an\u01ceg\u01cemin<\/em>). (It is not mentioned in the scriptures by which method of meditation he attained <em>an\u01ceg\u01cem\u012b-phala<\/em>. However, considering his training, it might be assumed that he attained Path-Knowledge by meditating on the Sense-bases.)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>(Incidentally, the difference in the attainments between Citta and An\u01cethapi\u00d3\u010fika should be noted here. One day, Citta went to the monastery and after making obeisance to the <em>bhikkhu<\/em>-elders, he invited them to an offering of food in his home the next day. Next day, when the <em>bhikkhu<\/em>-elders were seated at the prepared seats, Citta made obeisance, sat in a suitable place, and said to the Venerable Thera, the senior-most <em>bhikkhu <\/em>present then: \u201aVenerable Sir, \u2018Diversity of Elements\u2019, \u2018Diversity of Elements\u2019 (<em>Dh\u01cetu \u00f1\u01ce\u1ee5atta\u00d1<\/em>), it has been said. To what extent is there the diversity of Elements as taught by the Bhagav\u01ce?\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Venerable Thera knew the answer but he was diffident to give a reply to the question, and so he remained silent. for a third time too, the Venerable kept his silence.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Then the Venerable Isidatta, the junior-most <em>bhikkhu <\/em>among the <em>bhikkhus <\/em>present, thought: \u201a<em>Bhikkhu<\/em>-elder Thera does not answer the question, nor ask another <em>bhikkhu <\/em>to answer. The Sangha, by not answering to Citta&#8217;s question, makes him appear as harassing. I shall save the situation by answering his question.\u201b So, he went near the Venerable Thera and said: \u201aVenerable Sir, may I be allowed to answer the question by Citta.\u201b And the Venerable Thera gave him permission to do so. Then, the Venerable Isidatta returned to his seat and said to Citta: \u201aHouseholder, you asked the question, \u2018Venerable Thera, \u2018Diversity of Elements\u2019, \u2018Diversity of Elements\u2019, it has been said. To what extent is there, the Diversity of Elements?\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aYes, Venerable Sir, that is so,\u201b replied Citta. \u201aHouseholder, as taught by the Bhagav\u01ce there are various Elements, such as Eye-element (<em>cakkhu-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Element of visual object (<em>r|pa-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Eye-consciousness element (<em>cakkhu-vi\u00f1\u00f1\u01ce\u1ee5a-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Ear-element (<em>sota-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Element of sound (<em>sadda-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Ear-consciousness element (<em>sota-vi\u00f1\u00f1\u01ce\u1ee5a-dh\u01cetu<\/em>); &#8230;p&#8230; Mind-element (<em>mano-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Element of phenomena (<em>dhamma-dh\u01cetu<\/em>), Mind-consciousness element (<em>mano-vi\u00f1\u00f1\u01ce\u1ee5a-dh\u01cetu<\/em>). Householder, these are the various Elements <em>(\u00f1\u01ce\u1ee5atta- dh\u01cetu), <\/em>as taught by the Bhagav\u01ce.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta was satisfied with the answer given by the Venerable Isidatta and personally attended to him at the food offering. When, after finishing the meal, the <em>bhikkhus <\/em>returned to monastery, the Venerable Thera said to the Venerable Isidatta: \u201aFriend Isidatta, you perceived the problem well. I have no such perception. As in the previous case, the Venerable Thera did not answer although he knew it. When he kept his silence for three repeated questionings by Citta, the Venerable Isidatta obtained the elder Thera&#8217;s permission to answer and replied to him: \u201aWhen there is the erroneous concept regarding the present<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>1428<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>body or the five aggregates, <em>sakk\u01ceya di\u00d4\u00d4hi <\/em>(wrong views) arises; when there is no erroneous concept regarding the five aggregates, wrong views do not arise.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta pursued the problem with questions as to how the erroneous concept regarding the present body of five aggregates arises, and how that concept does not arise. Then Citta went to the monastery and after paying respects to the Sangha, he invited them to his farmyard the next day, where his cows were kept. On the following day, the Sangha went to his farmyard and sat in the seats prepared for them. Then the householder personally offered milk-rice to the Sangha.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>He was served the milk-rice in a gold vessel by his servants at the same time the Sangha were being served. As he was accompanying the Sangha, after the meal, to the monastery, he gave orders to his servants to make offerings of remaining milk-rice to suitable offerees. Then he accompanied the Sangha to their monastery.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It was scorching hot when the Sangha left the householder\u2019s farmyard. Walking in the hot sun, a rich meal was a rather inconvenient thing for the Sangha. Then the Venerable Mah\u01ceka, the junior-most <em>bhikkhu<\/em>, said to the Venerable Thera, the senior-most <em>bhikkhu<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aVenerable Thera, would a cool breeze in an overcast-sky with slight rain drops be convenient for everyone?\u201b And the Venerable Thera replied: \u201aFriend Mah\u01ceka, a cool breeze in an overcast sky with slight rain drops would be convenient for everyone.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Thereupon, the Venerable Mah\u01ceka, by his powers, changed the weather, letting the cool breeze blow in an overcast sky with slight rain drops.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta noted this event as a marvellous power possessed by the junior <em>bhikkhu<\/em>. When they arrived at the monastery, the Venerable Mah\u01ceka said to the Venerable Thera: \u201aVenerable Thera, is that enough?\u201b And the Venerable Thera replied: \u201aFriend Mah\u01ceka, that is enough. friend Mah\u01ceka, that is something done well that deserves reverence.\u201b After this recognition of the Venerable Mah\u01ceka&#8217;s powers, all the <em>bhikkhus <\/em>returned to their respective dwelling places (within the monastery complex).<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Then Citta requested the Venerable Mah\u01ceka to display his miraculous powers. The Venerable said: \u201aIn that case, householder, spread your cloak at the door-step to my monastery. Put a pile of grass from the bundle of grass on the cloak.\u201b Citta did as was instructed by Venerable Mah\u01ceka. Then the Venerable entered the monastery, bolted the door from inside and sent out flames through the keyhole and through the edges of the door. The flames burned up the grass but the cloak remained unburnt. Then Citta picked up his cloak and, awestruck and goose-flesh appeared on his skin, he sat in a suitable place.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Thereafter, Venerable\u00a0 \u00a0Mah\u01ceka\u00a0 \u00a0came\u00a0 \u00a0out\u00a0 \u00a0of\u00a0 \u00a0the\u00a0 \u00a0monastery\u00a0 \u00a0and\u00a0 \u00a0said\u00a0 \u00a0to\u00a0 \u00a0Citta,<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aHouseholder, is that enough?\u201b Citta replied: \u201aVenerable Mah\u01ceka, that is enough. Venerable Mah\u01ceka, that is something accomplished. Venerable Mah\u01ceka, that deserves reverence. Venerable Mah\u01ceka, may the Venerable Mah\u01ceka be pleased to stay in Macchik\u01cesa\u00d3\u010fa. The Amb\u01ce\u00d4aka monastery is pleasant to live in. I will see to the four requisites (robes, alms-food, dwelling, medicines).\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Venerable Mah\u01ceka said: \u201aHouseholder, you say what is good.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>However, Venerable Mah\u01ceka considered that it would not be proper for him to stay at the Amb\u01ce\u00d4aka monastery. So after tidying up his living quarters and the monastery, he took his alms-bowl and big robe and left the monastery for good.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>[In the above two <em>suttas<\/em>, Citta the householder had great reverence and admiration for the Venerable Isidatta and the Venerable Mah\u01ceka in donating his monastic complex to the two <em>bhikkhus<\/em>. However, from the point of view of the <em>bhikkhus<\/em>, the four requisites they had been donated were flawed because they amounted to rewards for their actions; Isidatta for expounding the Dhamma, and Mah\u01ceka for displaying miraculous power. Hence, out of regard for the <em>bhikkhu <\/em>rules of conduct, they left the place for good. (At that time, the Venerable Sudhamma was the Abbot of the monastery.) Citta the householder, donor of the monastery, made magnificent preparations to honour the visiting Sangha (without consulting the Venerable Sudhamma). The Venerable Sudhamma took exception to it and remarked: \u201aThere is one thing missing in this lavish array of offerings and that is sesame cake.\u201b This was an innuendo to belittle Citta, whose family, in the earlier generation, consisted of a seller of sesame cakes.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta made a suitably rude response in vulgar language to the sarcastic remark of the Abbot, who was touched to the quick and took the matter to the Buddha. After listening to the Buddha\u2019s admonition, the Abbot, Venerable Sudhamma, made amends to Citta. Then, staying at the Amb\u01ce\u00d4aka monastery, and practicing the Dhamma, the Venerable Sudhamma gained Insight and attained arahatship. It behoves me to go and meet Him now.\u201b He had five hundred carts fully laden with provisions, such as sesame, rice, ghee, molasses, honey, clothing, etc. for the long journey to S\u01cevatthi. He made a public invitation to the populace in Macchik\u01cesa\u00d3\u010fa that anyone, <em>bhikkhu<\/em>, <em>bhikkhun\u012b<\/em>, male lay disciple or female lay disciple, might, if they wished, join him on a pilgrimage to the Buddha and that he would see to every need of the pilgrims. And, in response to his invitation, there were five hundred <em>bhikkhus<\/em>, five hundred <em>bhikkhun\u012bs<\/em>, five hundred male lay disciples and five hundred female lay disciples who joined him on the pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The two thousand pilgrims who joined Citta plus the one thousand of his entourage, totalling three thousand, were well provided for the thirty-<em>yojana <\/em>journey. However, at every <em>yojana <\/em>of his journey, on the way devas welcomed them with temporary shelter and celestial food, such as gruel, eatables, cooked rice and beverages and every one of the three thousand pilgrims was attended on to his satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>By travelling a <em>yojana <\/em>a day, meeting with the devas&#8217; hospitality at every stop, the pilgrims reached S\u01cevatthi after a month. The provisions carried in his five hundred carts were not used. They even had surfeit of provisions which were offered by the devas and human beings along the way, and which they donated to other persons.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>On the day when the pilgrims were due to arrive in S\u01cevatthi, the Buddha said to the Venerable \u0152nanda: \u201a\u0152nanda, this evening Citta the householder, accompanied by five hundred lay disciples, will be paying homage to Me.\u201b \u0152nanda asked: \u201aVenerable Sir, are there miracles to happen then?\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aYes, \u0152nanda, there will be miracles.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aIn what manner will they happen, Venerable Sir?\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201a\u0152nanda, when he comes to me, there will rain a thick floral tribute of five hues that will rise to knee-deep over an area of eight <em>karisas<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>This dialogue between the Buddha and Venerable \u0152nanda aroused the curiosity of the citizens of S\u01cevatthi. People passed on the exciting news of Citta&#8217;s arrival, saying: \u201aA person of great past merit by the name of Citta a householder, is coming to town. Miracles are going to happen! He is arriving today! We will not miss the opportunity of seeing such a great person.\u201b With presents ready, they awaited on both sides of the road for the visitor and his friends.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When the pilgrim party arrived near the Jetavana monastery, the five hundred <em>bhikkhus <\/em>of the party went first. Citta told the five hundred female lay disciples to stay behind, and follow later and went to the Buddha accompanied by five hundred male lay disciples. (It should be noted that disciples paying homage to the Buddha were not an unruly crowd but well-disciplined; whether sitting or standing, they left a passageway for the Buddha to go to His raised platform, and they would remain motionless and silent on either side of the aisle.)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta then approached the aisle between a huge gathering of devotees. Whichever direction the <em>ariya <\/em>disciple, who had been established in the fruition of the three lower Paths glanced, the people murmured: \u201aThat is Citta the householder!\u201b He became a thrilling object in that big gathering. Citta drew close to the Buddha and he was enveloped by the six Buddha-rays. He stroke the Buddha\u2019s ankles with great reverence and vigour and then the floral tribute of five colours, described earlier, rained. People cheered enthusiastically loud and long.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta spent one whole month in close attendance on the Buddha. During that time, he<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:table --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<\/td>\n<td>\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:table --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list {\"ordered\":true,\"type\":\"1\"} --><\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li><em>karisa<\/em>: a measure of land equivalent to 1.75 acres.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>made a special request to the Buddha and His Sangha not to go out for alms-food but to accept his offerings at the monastery. All the pilgrims that had accompanied him also were taken care of in every aspect. In his month-long stay at the Jetavana monastery, none of his original provisions were used to feed everyone, for devas and humans made all sorts of gifts to Citta.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>At the end of one month, Citta made obeisance to the Buddha and said: \u201aVenerable Sir, I came with the intention of making offerings of my own property to the Bhagav\u01ce. I spent one month on the way and another month here in the Jetavana monastery. Still I have had no opportunity to offer my own property for I have been blessed with all sorts of gilts from devas and humans. It would seem that even if I were to stay here a year, I still may not have the chance to make offerings of my own property. It is my wish to deposit all my property I have brought here in this monastery for the benefit of the Sangha. May the Bhagav\u01ce be pleased to show me the place to do so.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Buddha asked Venerable \u0152nanda to find a suitable place for Citta to off-load the five-hundred cart-loads of provisions and were then offered to the Sangha. Then Citta returned to Macchik\u01cesa\u00d3\u010fa with the five hundred empty carts, people and devas, seeing the empty carts, remarked in mild rebuke: \u201aO Citta, had you done such deeds in the past as would lead to your going about with empty cans?\u201b Then they loaded his empty carts to the full with seven kinds of treasures. Citta also received sufficient gifts of all kinds, with which he catered to the needs of the pilgrims till he reached Macchik\u01cesa\u00d3\u010fa in ease and comfort.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Venerable \u0152nanda paid his obeisance to the Buddha and said:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aVenerable Sir, Citta the householder took one month coming to S\u01cevatthi, and spent another month at the Jetavana monastery. During this period, he had made great offerings with gifts received from devas and humans. He had emptied his five hundred carts of all provisions which he had brought, and was returning home with empty carts. However, people and devas who saw the empty carts said in mild rebuke: \u2018Citta, you had done such deeds in the past as would lead to your going about with empty carts?\u2019 And they are said to have filled Citta&#8217;s five hundred carts with seven kinds of treasures. And Citta is said to get home comfortably, looking after the needs of his companions with gifts received from devas and humans.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Venerable Sir, may I be allowed to ask a question: Does Citta meet with such abundance of honour and tribute only because he was on a pilgrimage to the Buddha? Would he meet the same kind of honour and tribute if he were to go elsewhere?\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Buddha said to the Venerable \u0152nanda: \u201a\u0152nanda, Citta the householder will receive the same kind of honour and tributes whether he comes to Me or goes elsewhere. This is indeed so, \u0152nanda, because Citta the householder had been one who had firm conviction about kamma and its consequences, both in the mundane aspect and the supramundane aspect. further, he had been fully convinced about the supramundane benefits that the Triple Gem are capable of. for a person of such nature, honour and tribute lines his path wherever he goes.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Buddha further uttered this verse (translation in prose):<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201a(\u0152nanda,) the <em>ariya <\/em>disciple who is endowed with conviction (regarding the mundane and the supramundane aspects) of one&#8217;s own actions and morality, and is possessed of following and wealth, is held in reverence (by men and devas) wherever he goes.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014 (<strong>Dh<\/strong>, V 303) \u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>By the end of the discourse many hearers attained Path-Knowledge, such as Stream- Entry, etc.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3>(c)\u00a0\u00a0 Citta designated as The foremost Lay Disciple.<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>from that time onwards, Citta the householder went about accompanied by five hundred <em>ariya <\/em>lay disciples. On one occasion, when the Buddha was naming distinguished lay disciples according to their merit, He declared, (with reference to the discourses made by<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>1432<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta as recorded in the Citta vagga of <strong>Sa\u00c4\u01ceyatana sa\u00d1yutta<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201a<em>Bhikkhus<\/em>, among My lay disciples who are exponents of the Dhamma, Citta the Householder, is the foremost.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>(The proficiency of Citta in expounding the Dhamma may be gleaned from <strong>Sa\u00c4yatana vagga Sa\u00d1yutta<\/strong><em>, 7-Citta sa\u00d1yutta, 1-Sa\u00d1yojana Sa\u00d1yutta, and 5- Pa\u00d4h\u01cena k\u01cemabh| Sutta<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3>The Gil\u01cenadassana Sutta<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>(The Gil\u01cenadassana Sutta, an example of Householder Citta&#8217;s discourse given even on his deathbed.)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As an <em>an\u01ceg\u01cem\u012b-ariya <\/em>who was the foremost expounder of the Dhamma among lay disciples, Citta the householder gave a discourse even on his deathbed. This story is given in <em>Gil\u01cenadassana Sa\u00d1yutta <\/em>in <em>Citta Sa\u00d1yutta<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Once Citta was terminally ill. Then many devas who were guardians of the his premises, guardians of the forest, guardians of certain trees and guardians who had power over herbs and deified trees, (because of huge proportions), assembled before him and said to him:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aHouseholder, now make a wish saying: \u2018May I be reborn as the Universal Monarch when I die.\u2019 \u201b Citta replied to them: \u201aBeing a Universal Monarch is impermanent in nature, unstable in nature. It is something that one must leave behind at last.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>His relatives and friends by his bedside thought he was uttering those strange words in a fit of delirium and said to him: \u201aLord, be careful. Do not talk absent-mindedly.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta asked them: \u201aYou say: \u2018Lord be careful. Do not talk absent-mindedly.\u2019 With respect to what words of mine do you say so?\u201b And the relatives and friends said: \u201aLord, you were saying: \u2018Being a Universal Monarch is impermanent in nature, unstable in nature. It is something that one must leave behind at last.\u2019 \u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta then tell them: \u201aO men, devas who are guardians of my premises, guardians of the forest, guardians of trees, guardians who have power over herbs and defied trees, came and said to me: \u2018Householder, now make a wish saying: \u2018May I be reborn as the Universal Monarch when I die.\u2019 So I told them: \u2018Being a Universal Monarch is impermanent in nature, unstable in nature. It is something ones must leave behind at last.\u2019 I was not saying these words absent mindedly.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Thereupon Citta&#8217;s friend and relatives asked him: \u201aLord, what advantages did these devas see in advising you to wish for rebirth as Universal Monarch?\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta replied: \u201aO men, these devas thought that \u2018this householder Citta has morality, has clean conduct, if he would wish for it he could easily have his wish fulfilled. One who is righteous can see benefits accruing to the righteous.\u2019 This was the advantage they saw in advising me to wish for rebirth as a Universal Monarch. Thus, I replied to them: \u201aBeing a Universal Monarch is impermanent in nature, unstable in nature. It is something one must leave behind at last.\u2019 I was not saying these words absent-mindedly.\u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The friends and relatives of Citta then asked him again: \u201aIn that case, Lord, give us some admonition.\u201b And Citta gave his last discourse thus:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201aIn that case, friend and relatives, you should practise with the resolve, \u2018We will have perfect confidence in the Buddha, reflecting that:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Buddha is called Araha\u00d1 because He is worthy of homage by the greatest of devas, humans and Brahm\u01ces.<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Samm\u01cesambuddha <\/em>because He knows all things fundamentally and truly by His own perfect wisdom.<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Vijj\u01cecara\u1ee5asampa\u00f1\u00f1\u01ce <\/em>because He is endowed with supreme Knowledge and perfect practice of morality.<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Sugata <\/em>because He speaks only what is beneficial and true.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Lokavid| <\/em>because he knows all the three worlds;<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Anuttaropurisa dammas\u01cerathi <\/em>because He is incomparable in taming those who deserve to be tamed.<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Satth\u01cedeva manussana <\/em>because He is the Teacher of devas and humans.<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called Buddha because He makes known the four Ariya Truths;<\/li>\n<li>The Buddha is called <em>Bhagav\u01ce <\/em>because He is endowed with the six great qualities of glory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will have perfect confidence in the Dhamma reflecting that:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Teaching of the <em>Bhagav\u01ce<\/em>, the Dhamma, is well expounded.<\/li>\n<li>Its Truths are personally appreciable.<\/li>\n<li>It is not delayed in its results.<\/li>\n<li>It can stand investigation.<\/li>\n<li>It is worthy of being perpetually borne in mind.<\/li>\n<li>Its Truths can be realized by the <em>ariyas <\/em>individually by their own effort and practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will have perfect confidence in the Sangha reflecting that:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The eight categories of <em>ariya <\/em>disciples of the Bhagav\u01ce, the Sangha, are endowed with the noble practice.<\/li>\n<li>They are endowed with straightforward uprightness.<\/li>\n<li>They are endowed with right conduct.<\/li>\n<li>They are endowed with the correctness in practice deserving reverence. (Being thus endowed with these four attributes:-)<\/li>\n<li>The eight categories of <em>ariya <\/em>disciples of the Bhagav\u01ce consisting of four pairs are worthy of receiving offerings brought even from afar.<\/li>\n<li>They are worthy of receiving offerings specially set aside for guests.<\/li>\n<li>They are worthy of receiving offerings made for the sake of acquiring great merit for the hereafter.<\/li>\n<li>(8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They are worthy of receiving obeisance.<\/li>\n<li>They are the incomparable fertile field for all to sow the seed of merit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>And also you should practice with the resolve: \u2018We shall always lay everything we have to be at the disposal of donees who have morality and who conduct themselves well.\u2019 \u201b<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Citta the householder then made his friends and relatives to be established in the routine of paying reverence to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha and in charity. With these last words he expired.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>(The scriptures do not specifically say in which realm Citta the householder was reborn, but since he was an <em>an\u01ceg\u01cemin<\/em>, he was presumed to be reborn in one of the fifteen Brahm\u01ce realms of fine Material Sphere outside of Non-Material Sphere, most probably in the Pure Abodes, <em>Suddh\u01ce v\u01cesa Brahm\u01ce <\/em>realm).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>II.
