Punna, Punnaka Thera<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>He was born in the family of a householder of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/s\/suppara.htm\">Supp\u0101raka<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/s\/sunaparanta.htm\">Sun\u0101paranta<\/a>&nbsp;country. When he was grown up, he went with a great caravan of merchandise to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/sa\/saavatthi.htm\">S\u0101vatthi<\/a>&nbsp;where, having heard the Buddha preach, he left the world and joined the Order. He won favour by attention to his duties. One day he asked the Buddha for a short lesson so that, having learnt it, he might go back to dwell in Sun\u0101paranta. The Buddha preached to him the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/pu\/punnovada.htm\">Punnov\u0101da Sutta<\/a>. So Punna departed, and, in Sun\u0101paranta, he became an arahant. There he won over many disciples, both male and female, and having built for the Buddha a cell out of red sandalwood (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/c\/candanamaalaa.htm\">Candan\u0101s\u0101l\u0101<\/a>), he sent him a flower by way of invitation. The Buddha came with five hundred arahants, spent a night in the cell, and went away before dawn.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Ninety one kappas ago, when there was no Buddha alive, Punna was a learned brahmin, and later became a hermit in Himav\u0101. Near his abode a Pacceka Buddha died, and at the moment of his death there appeared a great radiance. The ascetic cremated the body and sprinkled scented water on the pyre to extinguish the flames. A deva, witnessing the event, prophesied his future greatness. His name throughout his many lives was Punna or Punnaka. Thag. vs. 70; ThagA.i.156 ff.; Ap.ii.341.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In Sun\u0101paranta he first lived at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/am\/ambahattha.htm\">Ambahatthapabbata<\/a>, but, on being recognised by his brother, he went to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/s\/s3_sam.htm#Samuddagiri\">Samuddagiri vih\u0101ra<\/a>, where was a magnetised walk which none could use. The waves of the sea breaking made great noise, and, in order to help him to concentration, Punna caused the sea to be quiet. From there he went to M\u0101tulagiri, where the incessant cries of birds disturbed him; he finally went to Makulakag\u0101ma. While he was there, his brother&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/c\/culla_punna.htm\">C\u016bla Punna<\/a>, with five hundred others, sailed in a trading ship, and, before embarking, he visited Punna, took the precepts from him, and asked for his protection during the voyage. The ship reached an island where red sandalwood grew; with this the merchants filled the ship, and the spirits of the island, angered by this, raised a great storm and appeared before the sailors in fearful forms. Each merchant thought of his guardian deity and C\u016bla Punna of his brother. Punna, sensing his brother&#8217;s need, travelled through the air to the ship, and, at sight of him, the spirits disappeared. In gratitude for their deliverance, the merchants gave to the Elder a share of their sandalwood. It was with this material that the Candanas\u0101l\u0101, above referred to, was built.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/ku\/kundadhaana_th.htm\">Kundadh\u0101na<\/a>&nbsp;was the first among the arahants to be chosen to accompany the Buddha to Sun\u0101paranta. Sakka provided five hundred palanquins for the journey, one of which was empty. This was subsequently taken by the ascetic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/sa\/saccabaddha.htm\">Saccabandha<\/a>, whom the Buddha converted and ordained on the way. On his return journey, the Buddha stopped at the river&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palikanon.com\/english\/pali_names\/n\/nammada.htm\">Nammad\u0101<\/a>, and was entertained there by the N\u0101ga king. Pu\u1e47\u1e47a<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Reborn in this Buddha age in the&nbsp;Sun\u0101paranta&nbsp;country, at the port of&nbsp;Supp\u0101raka,<sup>[1]<\/sup>&nbsp;in the family of a aristocrat, he was named&nbsp;Pu\u1e47\u1e47a.&nbsp;Arrived at years of discretion, he went with a great caravan of merchandise to&nbsp;S\u0101vatthi,&nbsp;when the&nbsp;<strong>[71]<\/strong>&nbsp;Exalted One(Buddha) happened to be there. And he went to hear the Lord(Buddha) at the Vihara(monastery) with the local lay-followers. There he believed, and left the world(for monkhood). And for a time he won favour among the teachers and preceptors by his skill in dialectic. Then one day he went to the Lord(Buddha), and asked for a lesson, so that he, hearing propositions pairwise, might after that go to live in&nbsp;Sun\u0101paranta. To him the Exalted One(Buddha) uttered a &#8216;Lion&#8217;s Roar&#8217; of a lesson, to wit: &#8216;Now there are objects,&nbsp;Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,&nbsp;cognizable by the eye, etc.&#8217;<sup>[2]<\/sup>&nbsp;So&nbsp;Pu\u1e47\u1e47a&nbsp;departed, and studying concentration and insight, acquired the three forms of higher cognition.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>When he won arahantship(enlightenment) he won over many people to the faith, even 500 lay-monks and as many lay-sisters.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>And as he lay near final death he declared a\u00f1\u00f1\u0101<em>(supreme attainment)<\/em>&nbsp;in this verse:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:separator -->\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n<!-- \/wp:separator -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>[70]<\/strong>&nbsp;S\u012blameva&nbsp;<strong>[11]<\/strong>&nbsp;idha agga\u0271 pa\u00f1\u00f1av\u0101 pana uttamo||<br>Manussesu ca deve su s\u012blapa\u00f1\u00f1\u0101\u1e47ato jayan&#8217; ti.|| ||<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:separator -->\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n<!-- \/wp:separator -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>[70]<\/strong>&nbsp;Only virtue here is highest; but the wise man is supreme.<br>He who wisdom has and virtue,<br>He among men and gods is victor.<sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:separator -->\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n<!-- \/wp:separator -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><sup>[1]<\/sup>&nbsp;Cf.&nbsp;<em>Mah\u0101va\u1e43sa<\/em>&nbsp;(Geiger&#8217;s translation), 54, n 8.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><sup>[2]<\/sup>&nbsp;This is told in the Sutta on&nbsp;Pu\u1e47\u1e47a&#8217;s&nbsp;lesson (<em>Majjh.,<\/em>&nbsp;iii. 267&nbsp;<em>ff.;<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Sa\u014by.,<\/em>&nbsp;iv. 60; also&nbsp;<em>Divy\u0101vad\u0101na,<\/em>&nbsp;37-39). &#8216;Pair-wise&#8217; in the text is&nbsp;<em>yamaka.<\/em>&nbsp;Judging by the context in the &#8216;lesson,&#8217; compared with the method used throughout the book of the&nbsp;<em>Yamakas<\/em>&nbsp;<em>(Abhidhamma-Pi\u1e6daka),<\/em>&nbsp;this means that the thesis is stated, and is then followed by either its converse or other logically contrasted form.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><sup>[3]<\/sup>&nbsp;This forms a verse in&nbsp;S\u012blav\u0101&#8217;s&nbsp;poem (CCXLI., verse 619). There is a greater simplicity in this stanza, about the diction and the ideas, as of a man who had spent his life giving simple teaching in ethics to rough rustic audiences, such, as one gathers, he would meet in&nbsp;Sun\u0101paranta.&nbsp;The Lord(Buddha) led him to expect rough treatment at their hands (<em>Majjh.,<\/em>&nbsp;loc. cit.). The rhythm above almost parallels the Pali:&nbsp;<em>S\u012blam eva idha aggan, pa\u00f1\u00f1av\u0101 pana uttamo,<\/em>&nbsp;etc.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:separator -->\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n<!-- \/wp:separator -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>1.7-10 [70] Commentary on the stanza of Pu\u1e47\u1e47atthera<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The stanza starting with S\u012blameva constitutes that of the venerable Thera Pu\u1e47\u1e47a. What is the origin? He also, having done devoted service toward former Buddhas, accumulating good deeds conducive towards escape from rounds of repeated rebirths (va\u1e6d\u1e6da) in this and that existence, was reborn in a brahmin family in a world devoid of any Buddha (buddhasu\u00f1\u00f1a) ninety one aeons (kappa) ago from now. On having come of age, he reached perfection in all the brahmin lore, came to see disadvantage in sensual pleasures, gave up his household life, renounced the world, became an ascetic recluse, built a leaf-cottage in the region of Himavanta and made his residence there. Not far from the site he was staying, in a certain mountain slope a silent buddha became afflicted with ailment and passed away completely into nibb\u0101na; at the time of his parinibb\u0101na, there shone a great light. On having seen it, he went about here and there by way of investigating, saying to himself: \u201cHow, indeed, this light has happened?\u201d saw the self-awakened silent buddha, who had entered parinibb\u0101na on the mountain slope, gathered together sweet scented firewood, cremated his dead body and sprinkled sweet-scented water (on the ashes). There, a young divinity stood in the sky and said thus:\u2013 \u201cO good man! Well done, well done; by you much meritorious deed well conducive towards the attainment of excellent existence had been fulfilled by producing (pasavanta) the same; on that account, you will spring up but in excellent existences (sugati); your name will be \u201cPu\u1e47\u1e47a (full),\u201d also. On account of that act of merit, he wandered about his rounds of repeated rebirths among divine and human beings and was reborn in a wealthy householder\u2019s family in the port (pa\u1e6d\u1e6dana) of Supp\u0101raka in the district (janapada) of Sun\u0101parana when this Buddha arose. His name was Pu\u1e47\u1e47a. On having come of age, he took the guise of a merchant and went to S\u0101vatthi together with a large caravan (sattha). On that occasion also, the Blessed One was residing at S\u0101vatthi.Then, he went to the monastery along with devotees who were citizens of S\u0101vatthi, listened to the truth (dhamma) in the presence of the Master, aptly gained pious faith, became a monk, and conducted his life (vih\u0101si) winning the hearts of (\u0101r\u0101dhento) of his teachers and preceptors by doing duties appropriately assigned (vattapa\u1e6divatta) to him. He one day approached the Master, and said thus:\u2013 \u201cVenerable Sir! It would be good for me; May the Blessed One instructed me with brief advice, having heard which, I would dwell in the district of Sun\u0101paranta.\u201d To him, the Blessed One gave such a teaching as has begun with: \u201cO Pu\u1e47\u1e47a! There are, indeed, physical forms, to be recognised by eyes,\u201d made him roar the roar of a lion and released him. He paid his homage to the Blessed One, went to the district of Sun\u0101paranta, and while living in the port of Supp\u0101raka, indulged himself in the development of calmness (samatha) and spiritual insight (vipassan\u0101) and visualised the three sorts of super-science (vujj\u0101). Hence, has it been said in Apad\u0101na:\u2013<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cDepending on the slope of a peak,<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>there lived inside the hill, a self-<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>made undefeated silent buddha; that<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>buddha became afflicted with ailment.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>There was a shouting out (pan\u0101da) at<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>all times in the environs of my<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>hermitage. Consequently men to the extent of five hundred and women to the tune of five hundred acknowledged themselves as male and female devotees, respectively. There, he had a fragrant chamber (gandhaku\u1e6di) named Candanam\u0101\u1e37a (Sandal-wood hall), Built of red sandal wood, and invited the Glorious One by means of flower messenger (pupphad\u016bta) thus:\u2013 \u201cMay the Master, together with five hundred bhikkhus(monks) accept the hall (m\u0101\u1e37a).\u201d The Blessed One, by means of His magical powers went there together with that number of bhikkhus(monks), accepted the sandal-wood hall and returned even before the sun had risen. Subsequently, at the time of his complete passing away (parinibb\u0101na) uttered a stanza in order to make manifest his Arahantship (a\u00f1\u00f1\u0101).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>70. \u201dHere, moral precepts, even, is<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>foremost (agga); the possessor of<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>knowledge, however, is the most<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>excellent. Both among human and<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>divine beings there is victory owing<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>to moral precepts and clear knowledge<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>(pa\u00f1\u00f1\u0101\u1e47a).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>There, S\u012bla\u1e43 is to be construed thus:\u2013 by the stand in morality (s\u012bla\u1e6d\u1e6dha) is moral precept (s\u012bla); by the sense of establishment as well as by the sense of concentration (sam\u0101dh\u0101na); thus, is the meaning. Indeed, moral precept (s\u012bla) is the support (pati\u1e6d\u1e6dha) of all qualities (gu\u1e47a); on that account, (Buddha) said thus:\u2013 \u201cS\u012ble pati\u1e6d\u1e6dh\u0101ya naro sapa\u00f1\u00f1o (having his support on moral precept (s\u012bla) a man equipped with knowledge).\u201d He puts together (sam\u0101dahati) as well; he makes that not beset with (avippaki\u1e47\u1e47a) body and word; thus, is the meaning. Agga\u1e43 means: That this self-same s\u012bla (moral precept) is foremost of all qualities owing to being the origin (m\u016bla) and because of being foremost (pamukha).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Accordingly (Buddha) said: \u201cTasm\u0101tiha tva\u1e43 bhikkhu(monk) \u0101dimeva visodhehi kusalesu dhammesu. Ko c\u0101di Kusal\u0101na\u1e43 dhamm\u0101na\u1e43 s\u012bla\u00f1 ca suvisuddhan\u201d ti, \u201cP\u0101timokkhanti mukha\u1e43 eta\u1e43 pamukhameta\u1e43\u201d ti \u0101di. \u201cO bhikkhu! Therefore, here, you should purify but the beginning of good deeds. What is, then, the beginning of good deeds? It is s\u012bla, the well-purified.\u201d P\u0101timokkha, code of monk\u2019s morality, (a compact collection of disciplinary rules as contained in the Vinaya pi\u1e6daka); thus, this is face (mukha), this is foremost (pamukha), as well, the beginning (\u0101di). Idha connotes just an indeclinabel praticle (nip\u0101ta). Pa\u00f1\u00f1av\u0101 means: endowed with knowledge (\u00f1\u0101\u1e47a). Uttamo means: he is the best, the excellent; he shows the best condition of wisdom (pa\u00f1\u00f1\u0101) even, by individual (puggala) decision (adhi\u1e6d\u1e6dh\u0101na). Indeed, wisdom (pa\u00f1\u00f1\u0101) is superior to good deeds.
