Why the distinction? He explains, contrasting the way the commoner sees things to the way the Aristocrat sees things. Bhk. Thanissaro: appropriate attention; Bhk. \u00d1amoli: wise attention and unwise attention.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/dhamma-vinaya\/pts\/mn\/resources\/images\/king_of_ny_vrysm.gif\" width=\"38\" height=\"32\" alt=\"p.p. explains it all\"\/> <span class=\"f2\">\u2014 p.p.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is wise attention<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and unwise attention.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, from unwise attention<br\/>cankers arise that had not arisen,<br\/>and also cankers that have arisen increase.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, monks, from wise attention<br\/>cankers that had not arisen do not arise,<br\/>and also cankers that have arisen decline.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are, monks,<br\/>cankers that should be got rid of by vision,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>there are cankers that should be got rid of by control,<br\/>there are cankers that should be got rid of by use,<br\/>there are cankers that should be got rid of by endurance,<br\/>there are cankers that should be got rid of by class=\"f4\">Herein, monks, an uninstructed ordinary person,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>taking no count <a id=\"pg10\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[10]<\/b><\/span><\/a> of the pure ones,<br\/>unskilled in the dhamma of the pure ones,<br\/>untrained in the dhamma of the pure ones;<br\/>taking no count of the true men,<br\/>unskilled in the dhamma of the true men,<br\/>untrained in the dhamma of the true men,<br\/>does not comprehend the things<br\/>which should be wisely attended to,<br\/>does not comprehend the things<br\/>which should not be wisely attended to.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, not comprehending<br\/>the things that should be wisely attended to,<br\/>not comprehending<br\/>the things that should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>wisely attends to<br\/>those things which should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>does not wisely attend to<br\/>those things which should be wisely attended to.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p6\">6<\/a>]<\/span> And what, monks, are the things<br\/>that should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>but to which he wisely attends?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">From his wisely attending to these things, monks,<br\/>the canker of sense-pleasure arises<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>or the canker of sense-pleasure, arisen, increases;<br\/>or the canker of becoming arises<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>or the canker of becoming, arisen, increases;<br\/>or the canker of ignorance<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> arises<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>or the canker of ignorance, arisen, increases.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These are the things<br\/>to which he wisely attends<br\/>but which should not be wisely attended to.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, monks, are the things<br\/>that should be wisely attended to,<br\/>but to which he does not wisely attend?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">From his wisely attending to these things, monks,<br\/>either the canker of sense-pleasure<br\/>which had not arisen<br\/>does not arise,<br\/>or if the canker of sense-pleasure has arisen<br\/>it declines;<br\/>or if the canker of becoming<br\/>has not arisen<br\/>it does not arise,<br\/>or if the canker of becoming has arisen<br\/>it declines;<br\/>or if the canker of ignorance<br\/>has not arisen<br\/>it does not arise,<br\/>or if the canker of ignorance has arisen<br\/>it declines.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These are things<br\/>that should be wisely attended to,<br\/>but to which he does not wisely attend.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he wisely attends<br\/>to things which should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>if he does not wisely attend<br\/>to things which should be wisely attended to,<br\/>cankers arise<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>and also the cankers, arisen, increase.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p7\">7<\/a>]<\/span> In these ways<br\/>he is not wisely attending:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now, was I in a past period?<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, was I not in a past period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, <a id=\"pg11\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[11]<\/b><\/span><\/a> what was I in a past period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, how was I<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> in a past period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, having been what,<br\/>what did I become in a past period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, will I come to be in a future period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, will I not come to be in a future period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, what will I come to be in a future period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, how will I come to be in a future period?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having become what,<br\/>what will I come to be in a future period?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or, if he is now subjectively<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> doubtful<br\/>about the present period,<br\/>and thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now, am I?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, am I not?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, what am I?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, how am I?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, whence has this being come?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Where-going will it come to be?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p8\">8<\/a>]<\/span> To one who does not pay wise attention in these ways,<br\/>one of six (wrong) views arises:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;There is for me a self&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>the view arises to him as though it were true,<br\/>as though it were real.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or, &#8216;There is not for me a self.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211; the view arises to him as though it were true,<br\/>as though it were real.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or, &#8216;Simply by self am I aware of self.&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>the view arises to him<br\/>as though it were true,<br\/>as though it were real.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or, &#8216;Simply by self am I aware of not-self.&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>the view arises to him<br\/>as though it were true,<br\/>as though it were real.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or, &#8216;Simply by not-self am I aware of self&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>view arises to him<br\/>as though it were true,<br\/>as though it were real.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or a wrong view occurs to him thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Whatever is this self for me<br\/>that speaks,<br\/>that experiences<br\/>and knows,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that experiences now here,<br\/>now there,<br\/>the fruition of deeds<br\/>that are lovely<br\/>and that are depraved,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>it is this self for me<br\/>that is permanent,<br\/>stable,<br\/>eternal,<br\/>not subject to change,<br\/>that will stand firm like unto the eternal.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, monks, is called going to <a id=\"pg12\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[12]<\/b><\/span><\/a> wrong views,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>holding wrong views,<br\/>the wilds of wrong views,<br\/>the wriggling of wrong views,<br\/>the scuffling of wrong views,<br\/>the fetter of wrong views.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Fettered with the fetter of wrong views, monks,<br\/>the uninstructed ordinary person<br\/>is not set free from birth,<br\/>from old age and dying,<br\/>from griefs,<br\/>from sorrows,<br\/>from ills,<br\/>from tribulations,<br\/>from miseries,<br\/>he is not set free from anguish,<br\/>I say.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p9\">9<\/a>]<\/span> But the instructed disciple of the pure ones<br\/>who takes count of the pure ones,<br\/>who is skilled in the dhamma of the pure ones,<br\/>well trained in the dhamma of the pure ones,<br\/>who takes count of the true men,<br\/>who is skilled in the dhamma of the true men,<br\/>well trained in the dhamma of the true men &#8211;<br\/>he comprehends the things that should be wisely attended to,<br\/>he comprehends the things that should not be wisely attended to;<br\/>he, comprehending the things that should be wisely attended to,<br\/>comprehending the things that should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>does not wisely attend to those things which should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>he wisely attends to those things which should be wisely attended to.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p10\">10<\/a>]<\/span> And which, monks, are those things<br\/>which he does not wisely attend to<br\/>because they should not be wisely attended to?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Those things, monks,<br\/>by wisely attending to which<br\/>there arises the canker of sense-pleasure<br\/>which had not arisen before,<br\/>or the canker of sense-pleasure which,<br\/>arisen before,<br\/>increases.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or there arises the canker of becoming<br\/>which had not arisen before,<br\/>or the canker of becoming which,<br\/>arisen before,<br\/>increases.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Or there arises the canker of ignorance<br\/>which had not arisen before,<br\/>or the canker of ignorance which,<br\/>arisen before,<br\/>increases.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These are the things to which he does not wisely attend<br\/>because they should not be wisely attended to.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And which, monks, are the things<br\/>to which he wisely attends<br\/>because they should be wisely attended to?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Those things, monks,<br\/>by wisely attending to which<br\/>there does not arise the canker of sense-pleasure<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>or the canker of sense-pleasure which,<br\/>arisen before,<br\/>declines;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">those things, monks,<br\/>by wisely attending to which<br\/>there does not arise the canker of becoming<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>or the canker of becoming which,<br\/>arisen before,<br\/>declines;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">those things, monks,<br\/>by wisely attending to which<br\/>there does not arise the canker of ignorance<br\/>which had not arisen before<br\/>or the canker of ignorance which,<br\/>arisen before,<br\/>declines.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These are the things to which he wisely attends<br\/>because they should be wisely attended to.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he is one who does not wisely attend<br\/>to things that should not be wisely attended to,<br\/>if he is one who wisely attends<br\/>to things that should be wisely attended to,<br\/>both the cankers which have not arisen do not arise,<br\/>and the cankers which have arisen decline.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p11\">11<\/a>]<\/span> He, <a id=\"pg13\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[13]<\/b><\/span><\/a> thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This is anguish,&#8217;<br\/>wisely attends.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This is the origin of anguish,&#8217;<br\/>wisely attends.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This is the stopping of anguish,&#8217;<br\/>wisely attends.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This is the course leading to the stopping of anguish,&#8217;<br\/>wisely
