one time the Lord was staying near <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#savatthi\">S\u0101vatth\u012b<\/a><br\/>in the Jeta Grove in An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika&#8217;s monastery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered One,&#8221; these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p2\">2<\/a>]<\/span> &#8220;Monks, become my heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not heirs of material things.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I have sympathy with you and think:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;How may disciples become my heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not heirs of material things?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If you, monks, should become heirs of material things,<br\/>not heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not only may you become in consequence<br\/>those of whom it is said:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The Teacher&#8217;s disciples<br\/>are heirs of material things,<br\/>not heirs of <a id=\"pg17\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[17]<\/b><\/span><\/a> <i>Dhamma,&#8217;<\/i><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">but I too may become in consequence<br\/>one of whom it is said:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The Teacher&#8217;s disciples<br\/>are heirs of material things,<br\/>not heirs of <i>Dhamma,&#8217;<\/i><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But if you, monks, should become my heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not heirs of material things,<br\/>then you may become in consequence<br\/>those of whom it is said:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The think:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">How may disciples become my heirs of <i>Dhamma,<\/i>,<br\/>not heirs of material things?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Take a case where I, monks,<br\/>may have eaten<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and be satisfied,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>(the meal) ended, finished,<br\/>I having had enough,<br\/>as much as I pleased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But it may be that some of my almsfood is over<br\/>and is to be thrown away,<br\/>when two monks may arrive<br\/>worn out with exhaustion and hunger.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If I should speak to them thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I, monks, have eaten and am satisfied<br\/>(the meal) ended, finished,<br\/>I having had enough,<br\/>as much as I pleased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But some of my almsfood is over<br\/>and is to be thrown away.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Do eat it if you (so) desire;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>if you do not eat it<br\/>I will now throw it away<br\/>where there is no grass<br\/>or I will drop it into water<br\/>that has no living creatures in it.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p4\">4<\/a>]<\/span> Then it may occur to one monk:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now, the Lord having eaten and being satisfied<br\/>(the meal) ended, finished,<br\/>having had enough,<br\/>as much as he pleased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this almsfood of the Lord&#8217;s is to be thrown away;<br\/>if we do not eat it,<br\/>the Lord will now throw it <a id=\"pg18\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[18]<\/b><\/span><\/a> away<br\/>where there is no grass<br\/>or he will drop it into water<br\/>that has no living creatures in it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this was said by the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks, become my heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not heirs of material things.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this is a material thing,<br\/>that is to say, almsfood.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose that I,<br\/>not having eaten this almsfood,<br\/>in spite of this hunger and exhaustion,<br\/>should pass this night and day thus?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, not having eaten that almsfood,<br\/>in spite of that hunger and exhaustion,<br\/>may pass this night and day thus.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p5\">5<\/a>]<\/span> Then it occurs to the second monk, thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now, the Lord having eaten and being satisfied<br\/>(the meal) ended, finished,<br\/>having had enough,<br\/>as much as he pleased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this almsfood of the Lord&#8217;s is to be thrown away;<br\/>if we do not eat it,<br\/>the Lord will now throw it away<br\/>where there is no grass<br\/>or he will drop it into water<br\/>that has no living creatures in it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose that I,<br\/>having eaten this alms-food,<br\/>having driven away this hunger and exhaustion,<br\/>should pass this night and day thus?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, having eaten that almsfood,<br\/>having driven away that hunger and exhaustion,<br\/>may spend that night and day thus.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p6\">6<\/a>]<\/span> Although, monks, that monk,<br\/>having eaten that almsfood,<br\/>having driven away this hunger and exhaustion,<br\/>should pass this night and day thus,<br\/>he, having eaten that almsfood,<br\/>having driven away that hunger and exhaustion,<br\/>may spend that night and day thus,<br\/>yet that first monk is for me<br\/>the more to be honoured<br\/>and the more to be praised.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the reason for this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is, monks, that it will conduce for a long time<br\/>to that monk&#8217;s desirelessness,<br\/>to his contentment,<br\/>expunging (of evil),<br\/>to his being easily supported,<br\/>to his putting forth energy.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p7\">7<\/a>]<\/span> Therefore, monks, become my heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not heirs of material things.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I have sympathy with you and think:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">How may disciples become my heirs of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>and not heirs of material things?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus spoke the Lord;<br\/>when the Well-farer had spoken thus,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>he entered the dwelling-place.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p8\">8<\/a>]<\/span> Thereupon the venerable S\u0101riputta,<br\/>not long after the Lord had gone away,<br\/>addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Reverend monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Your reverence,&#8221;<br\/>these monks answered the venerable S\u0101riputta in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable S\u0101riputta spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;In what respects, your reverences,<br\/>while the Teacher is staying in seclusion,<br\/>do disciples not follow his example of aloofness?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And in what respects,<br\/>while the Teacher is staying in seclusion,<br\/>do disciples follow his example of aloofness?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p9\">9<\/a>]<\/span> &#8220;We would come even from afar<br\/>to learn from the venerable S\u0101riputta<br\/>the meaning of this that is said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It were good indeed<br\/>if the meaning of this that is said<br\/>should be spoken out by the venerable S\u0101riputta,<br\/>so that monks,<br\/>having heard the venerable S\u0101riputta,<br\/>might master it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Very well, your reverences,<br\/>listen,<br\/>attend carefully,<br\/>and I will speak.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, your reverence,&#8221;<br\/>these monks answered the venerable S\u0101riputta in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable S\u0101riputta spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p10\">10<\/a>]<\/span> &#8220;This is a case, your reverences,<br\/>where, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion,<br\/>disciples do not follow his example as to aloofness,<br\/>they do not get rid of those things<br\/>of which the Teacher <a id=\"pg19\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[19]<\/b><\/span><\/a> has spoken of getting rid,<br\/>they are ones for abundance<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p11\">11<\/a>]<\/span> Among them,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> your reverences,<br\/>monks who are statements of the three ways, Bhk. Bodhi also does not follow the Pali here. Bhk. Sujato has the idea here more or less correctly:  &#8220;In this case, the senior mendicants should be criticized on three grounds. &#8216;The disciples of a teacher who lives in seclusion do not
