this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is that these see<br\/>and also hear<br\/>of this reverend one<br\/>that his occupations with evil unskilled wishes<br\/>are not destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverence,<br\/>it is like a bronze bowl<br\/>brought back from a shop or smithy<br\/>quite pure,<br\/>quite clean;<br\/>its owners, having filled it with a dead snake<br\/>or a dead dog<br\/>or a dead human being,<br\/>and having enclosed it in another bronze bowl,<br\/>might take it back inside the shop.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">People, on seeing it, would say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Just <a id=\"pg38\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[38]<\/b><\/span><\/a> look,<br\/>what is this that has been brought back<br\/>like a very lovely thing?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having lifted it up and opened it,<br\/>they would look at it;<br\/>at the sight of it,<br\/>repugnance would set in<br\/>and loathing would set in<br\/>and disgust would set in;<br\/>those who had been hungry<br\/>would have no desire for food,<br\/>far less those who had eaten already &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">even so, your reverence,<br\/>of whatever monk it is seen and heard<br\/>that these occupations with evil unskilled wishes<br\/>are not destroyed &#8211;<br\/>even though he be a forest-dweller<br\/>whose lodgings are remote,<br\/>one who walks for almsfood<br\/>on continuous almsround,<br\/>a rag-robe wearer<br\/>who wears robes that are worn thin &#8211;<br\/>then his fellow Brahma-farers do not revere,<br\/>esteem, venerate, honour him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the cause of this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This reverend one&#8217;s occupations<br\/>with evil unskilled, wishes<br\/>are seen as well as heard<br\/>to be not destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p30\">30<\/a>]<\/span> In whatever monk, your reverence, these occupations<br\/>with evil unskilled wishes<br\/>are seen and are heard<br\/>to be destroyed &#8211;<br\/>even though he were staying near a village,<br\/>were one who is invited,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>were one who wears householder&#8217;s robe-material<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>then his fellow Brahma-farers<br\/>would revere, esteem, venerate, honour him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the cause of this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is that these see and also hear<br\/>of that reverend one<br\/>that his occupations<br\/>with evil unskilled wishes<br\/>are destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverence, it is like a bronze bowl,<br\/>brought back from a shop or smithy<br\/>quite pure, quite clean.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Its owners,<br\/>having filled it with fine rice;<br\/>rice-water,<br\/>the black grains removed,<br\/>with various curries,<br\/>various vegetables,<br\/>and having enclosed it in another bronze bowl,<br\/>might take it back inside the shop.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">People, seeing it, would say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Just look,<br\/>what is this that has been brought back<br\/>like a very lovely thing?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having lifted it up,<br\/>having opened it,<br\/>they would look at it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On seeing it,<br\/>liking would set in,<br\/>and no loathing would set in<br\/>and no disgust would set in;<br\/>even those who had eaten<br\/>would have a desire for food,<br\/>how much more those who were hungry? &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">even so, your reverence,<br\/>of whatever monk it is seen and heard that these occupations<br\/>with evil unskilled wishes<br\/>are destroyed &#8211;<br\/>even though he were staying near a village,<br\/>were one who is invited,<br\/>were one who wears householder&#8217;s robe-material &#8211;<br\/>then his fellow Brahma-farers would revere<br\/>would revere, esteem, venerate, honour him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the cause of this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is that these see and also hear<br\/>of this reverend one<br\/>that his occupations<br\/>with evil unskilled wishes<br\/>are destroyed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p31\">31<\/a>]<\/span> When this had been said,<br\/>the venerable Moggall\u0101na the Great <a id=\"pg39\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[39]<\/b><\/span><\/a> spoke thus<br\/>to the venerable S\u0101riputta:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;A simile occurs<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a pith.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even while there was this reasoning<br\/>in the mind of the Naked Ascetic, Pandu&#8217;s son,<br\/>who had formerly been a vehicle maker,<br\/>so did Sam\u012bti, the son of a vehicle maker,<br\/>shape away that crookedness<br\/>and that twist<br\/>and that notch from the felloe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, your reverence,<br\/>the Naked Ascetic, Pa\u1e47\u1e0du&#8217;s son,<br\/>who had formerly been the son of a vehicle maker,<br\/>was delighted;<br\/>he let forth a cry of delight:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It seems as if he is shaping it away<br\/>because with his heart<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> he knows my heart.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, your reverence,<br\/>those persons who are without faith,<br\/>but who, in want of a way of living,<br\/>have gone forth from home into homelessness,<br\/>not from faith,<br\/>who are crafty,<br\/>fraudulent,<br\/>deceitful,<br\/>who are unbalanced<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and puffed up,<br\/>who are shifty,<br\/>scurrilous<br\/>and of loose talk,<br\/>the doors of whose sense-faculties are not guarded,<br\/>who do not know moderation in eating,<br\/>who are not intent on vigilance,<br\/>indifferent to recluse-ship,<br\/>not of keen respect for the training,<br\/>ones for abundance,<br\/>lax,<br\/>taking the lead in backsliding,<br\/>shirking the burden of seclu- <a id=\"pg40\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[40]<\/b><\/span><\/a> sion<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> who are indolent,<br\/>of feeble energy,<br\/>of confused mindfulness,<br\/>not clearly conscious,<br\/>not concentrated<br\/>but of wandering minds,<br\/>who are weak in wisdom,<br\/>drivellers<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>it seems that the venerable S\u0101riputta,<br\/>because he knows their hearts with his heart,<br\/>is shaping them<br\/>by means of this disquisition on Dhamma.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But those young men of respectable families who,<br\/>from faith,<br\/>have gone forth from home into homelessness,<br\/>who are not crafty,<br\/>fraudulent<br\/>or deceitful,<br\/>who are not unbalanced,<br\/>not puffed up,<br\/>not shifty,<br\/>not scurrilous<br\/>or of loose talk,<br\/>the doors of whose sense-faculties are head,<br\/>having acquired a garland of lotuses<br\/>or a garland of jasmine<br\/>or a garland of acacia creeper,<br\/>and having taken it in both hands<br\/>should place it on the top of the head &#8211;<br\/>even so, your reverence,<br\/>those young men of respectable families<br\/>who have gone forth from home into homelessness from faith,<br\/>who are not crafty,<br\/>fraudulent<br\/>or MA.<\/i> i. 144 says this means &#8220;an equal person. &#8216;Equal&#8217; means one who has an offence. <i>&#8216;Pa\u1e6di-puggala&#8217;<\/i> means the reprover. He thinks it possible to say, wishing for reproof from one who has an offence, &#8216;You have fallen into this and that offence.
