href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#savatthi\">S\u0101vatth\u012b<\/a><br\/>in the Jeta Grove in An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika&#8217;s monastery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there<br\/>the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered one,&#8221; these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p2\">2<\/a>]<\/span> &#8220;Fare along, monks, possessed of moral habit,<br\/>possessed of the Obligations,<br\/>fare along controlled by the control of the Obligations,<br\/>possessed of right conduct and resort,<br\/>seeing danger in the slightest faults;<br\/>undertaking them rightly,<br\/>train yourselves in the rules of training.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p3\">3<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;May I be agreeable to my fellow Brahma-farers,<br\/>liked by them,<br\/>revered and respected,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>whose meditation is uninterrupted,<br\/>who is endowed with vision,<span class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p4\">4<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;May I be one who receives the requisites of robes,<br\/>almsfood,<br\/>lodgings,<br\/>and medicines for the sick,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation is uninterrupted,<br\/>who is endowed with vision,<br\/>a cultivator of empty places.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p5\">5<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;May these services of those<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> from whom I enjoy the requisites of robes, almsfood, lodgings, requisites for the sick, be of great merit, of great advantage,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation is uninterrupted,<br\/>who is endowed with vision,<br\/>a cultivator of empty places.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f2 g\"><b>[42]<\/b><\/span><\/a> advantage<br\/>to those of my kith and kin<br\/>who, their minds pleased,<br\/>recollect the departed<br\/>who have passed away,&#8217;<span deliverances<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> which are calmed,<br\/>transcending forms,<br\/>may I fare along<br\/>having realized<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> them<br\/>while in the body,&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation is reduction of attachment,<br\/>aversion,<br\/>confusion,<br\/>may I be a once-returner;<br\/>having come back once only to this <a id=\"pg43\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[43]<\/b><\/span><\/a> world,<br\/>may I make an end of anguish,&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p13\">13<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;By the total destruction<br\/>of the five fetters<br\/>that bind one to the lower world,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>may I be of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who has utterly attained to Nibb\u0101na there,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> not liable to return from that world,&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation is uninterrupted,<br\/>who is endowed with vision,<br\/>a cultivator of empty places.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p14\">14<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;May I experience the various forms of psychic power:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having been one<br\/>may I be manifold,<br\/>having been manifold<br\/>may I be one;<br\/>manifest or invisible<br\/>may I go unhindered through a wall,<br\/>through a rampart,<br\/>through a mountain<br\/>as if through air;<br\/>may I plunge into the ground<br\/>and shoot up again<br\/>as if in water;<br\/>may I walk upon the water<br\/>without parting it<br\/>as if on the ground;<br\/>sitting cross-legged<br\/>may I travel through the air<br\/>like a bird on the wing;<br\/>with my hand<br\/>may I rub and stroke this moon and sun<br\/>although they are of such mighty power and majesty;<br\/>and even as far as the Brahma-world<br\/>may I have power in respect of my body,&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn22\" href=\"#n22\">22<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span>,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation is uninterrupted,<br\/>who is endowed with vision,<br\/>a cultivator of empty places.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p15\">15<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;By the purified deva-like hearing<br\/>which surpasses that of men,<br\/>may I hear both (kinds of) sounds &#8211;<br\/>deva-Hke ones<br\/>and human ones,<br\/>whether they be far or near,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation places.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p17\">17<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;May I recollect (my) manifold former habitations,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn26\" href=\"#n26\">26<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> that is to say,<br\/>one birth,<br\/>two births,<br\/>three births, four births, five births,<br\/>ten births, twenty births, forty births, fifty births,<br\/>a hundred births,<br\/>a thousand births,<br\/>a hundred thousand births,<br\/>many an eon of integration,<br\/>many an eon of disintegration,<br\/>many an eon of integration-disintegration;<br\/>such a one was I by name,<br\/>having such and such a clan,<br\/>such and such a colour,<br\/>so was I nourished,<br\/>such and such pleasant and painful experiences were mine,<br\/>so did the span of life end.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Passing from this,<br\/>I came to be in another state<br\/>where such a one was I by name,<br\/>having such and such a clan,<br\/>such and such a colour,<br\/>so was I nourished,<br\/>such and such pleasant and painful experiences were mine,<br\/>so did the span of life end.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Passing from this I arose here.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus may I remember (my) divers former habitations<br\/>in all their modes and detail,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he should be one who fulfils the moral habits,<br\/>who is intent on mental tranquillity within,<br\/>whose meditation is uninterrupted,<br\/>who is endowed with vision,<br\/>a cultivator of empty places.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><span class=\"f3\">[<a id=\"p18\">18<\/a>]<\/span> Monks, if a monk should wish:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;With the purified <i>deva<\/i>-vision<br\/>surpassing that of men,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn27\" href=\"#n27\">27<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>may I behold beings<br\/>as they pass hence<br\/>or come to be &#8211;<br\/>mean,<br\/>excellent,<br\/>fair,<br\/>foul,<br\/>in a good bourn,<br\/>in a bad bourn,<br\/>according to the consequences of their deeds;<br\/>may I comprehend:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Indeed these worthy beings<br\/>were possessed of wrong conduct in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>they were scoffers at the ariyans,<br\/>holding a wrong view,<br\/>incurring deeds consequent on a wrong view &#8211;<br\/>these,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying,<br\/>have arisen in a sorrowful state,<br\/>a bad bourn,<br\/>the abyss,<br\/>Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But these worthy beings<br\/>who were possessed of good conduct in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>who were not scoffers at the ariyans,<br\/>holding a right view,<br\/>incurring deeds consequent on a right view &#8211; <a id=\"pg45\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[45]<\/b><\/span><\/a><br\/>these<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>have arisen in a good bourn,<br\/>a heaven world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus, with the purified deva-vision<br\/>surpassing that of men<br\/>may I behold beings<br\/>as they pass hence,<br\/>as they arise &#8211;<br\/>mean,<br\/>excellent,<br\/>fair,<br\/>foul,<br\/>in a good bourn,<br\/>in a bad bourn,<br\/>according to the consequences of their deeds,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p
