An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika&#8217;s monastery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There the venerable S\u0101riputta addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Reverend monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Your reverence,&#8221; these monks answered the venerable S\u0101riputta in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The venerable S\u0101riputta spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;As, your reverences,<br\/>among all creatures that can walk<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>all pedal qualities are combined in an elephant&#8217;s foot,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and as the elephant&#8217;s foot is chief among these<br\/>in point of size,<br\/>so, your reverences,<br\/>all skilled states of mind<br\/>are included among the four ariyan truths.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Among what four?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Among the ariyan truth of anguish,<br\/>among the ariyan truth of the uprising of anguish,<br\/>among the ariyan truth of the stopping of anguish,<br\/>among the ariyan truth of the course<br\/>leading to the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg231\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[231]<\/b><\/span><\/a> And what, your reverences,<br\/>is the ariyan truth of anguish?<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Birth is anguish<br\/>and ageing is anguish<br\/>and dying is anguish;<br\/>and grief,<br\/>lamentation,<br\/>sorrow,<br\/>tribulation<br\/>and despair are anguish,<br\/>and not getting what one wants,<br\/>that too is anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In brief<br\/>the five groups of grasping are anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>are the five groups of grasping?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Just these;<br\/>the group of grasping after material shape,<br\/>the group of grasping after feeling,<br\/>the group of grasping after perception,<br\/>the group of grasping after the habitual tendencies,<br\/>the group of grasping after consciousness.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> hard,<br\/>solid,<br\/>is internal,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>referable to an individual<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n8\">88<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and derived therefrom,<br\/>that is to say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">the hair of the head,<br\/>the hair of the body,<br\/>nails,<br\/>teeth,<br\/>skin,<br\/>flesh,<br\/>sinews,<br\/>bones,<br\/>marrow of the bones,<br\/>kidney,<br\/>heart,<br\/>liver,<br\/>pleura,<br\/>spleen,<br\/>lungs,<br\/>intestines,<br\/>mesentery,<br\/>stomach,<br\/>excrement,<br\/>or whatever other thing is hard,<br\/>solid,<br\/>is internal,<br\/>referable to an individual<br\/>or derived therefrom &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">this, your reverences,<br\/>is called the internal element of extension.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is an internal element of extension<br\/>and whatever is an external element of extension,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>just these are the element of extension.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By means of perfect intuitive wisdom<br\/>it should be seen of this<br\/>as it really is, thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This is not mine,<br\/>this am I not,<br\/>this is not my self.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having seen this thus<br\/>as it really is<br\/>by means of perfect intuitive wisdom,<br\/>he disregards the element of extension,<br\/>he cleanses his mind<br\/>of the element of extension.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg232\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[232]<\/b><\/span><\/a> There comes to be a time, your reverences,<br\/>when the element of extension<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that is external<br\/>is agitated;<br\/>at that time the external element of extension disappears.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The impermanence<br\/>of this ancient external element of extension<br\/>can be shown, your reverences,<br\/>its liability to destruction can be shown,<br\/>its liability to decay can be shown,<br\/>its liability to change can be shown.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So what of this short-lived body<br\/>derived from craving?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is not anything here for saying,<br\/>&#8216;I&#8217;<br\/>or &#8216;mine&#8217;<br\/>or &#8216;I am.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences,<br\/>if others abuse,<br\/>revile,<br\/>annoy,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>vex this monk,<br\/>he comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This painful feeling that has arisen in me<br\/>is born of sensory impingement on the ear,<br\/>it has a cause,<br\/>not no cause.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the cause?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sensory impingement is the cause.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He sees that sensory impingement<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is impermanent,<br\/>he sees that feeling is impermanent,<br\/>he sees that perception is impermanent,<br\/>he sees that the habitual tendencies are impermanent,<br\/>he sees that consciousness is impermanent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">His mind rejoices,<br\/>is pleased,<br\/>composed<br\/>and is set on<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> the objects of the element.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, your reverences,<br\/>others comport themselves in undesirable,<br\/>disagreeable,<br\/>unpleasant ways<br\/>towards that monk,<br\/>and he receives blows from their hands<br\/>and from clods of earth<br\/>and from sticks<br\/>and weapons,<br\/>he comprehends thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This body is such<br\/>that blows from hands affect it<br\/>and blows from clods of earth affect it<br\/>and blows from sticks affect it<br\/>and blows from weapons affect it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this was said by the Lord<br\/>in the Parable of the Saw:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If, monks,<br\/>low-down thieves should carve you limb from limb<br\/>with a two-handled saw,<br\/>whoever sets his heart at enmity,<br\/>he, for this reason,<br\/>is not a doer of my teaching.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Unsluggish energy shall come to be stirred up by me,<br\/>unmuddled mindfulness set up,<br\/>the body tranquillised,<br\/>impassible,<br\/>the mind composed and one-pointed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, willingly,<br\/>let blows from hands affect this body,<br\/>let blows from clods of earth this body,<br\/>let blows from sticks this body,<br\/>let blows from weapons affect it,<br\/>for this teaching of the Awakened Ones is being done.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, your reverences,<br\/>this monk recollects the Awakened One thus,<br\/>if he recollects <i>Dhamma<\/i> thus,<br\/>if he recollects the Order thus,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>but there is not established (in him)<br\/>the equanimity that depends on <a id=\"pg233\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[233]<\/b><\/span><\/a> skill;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he is strongly moved<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> because of this,<br\/>he comes to a strongly moved condition, and thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is unprofitable for me,<br\/>it is not profitable for me,<br\/>it is ill gotten by me,<br\/>it is not well gotten by me<br\/>that, although I recollect the Awakened One thus,<br\/>although I recollect dhamma thus,<br\/>although I recollect the Order thus,<br\/>the equanimity that depends on skill<br\/>is not established (in me).&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, as a daughter-in-law,<br\/>having seen her father-in-law,<br\/>is strongly moved<br\/>and comes to a strongly moved condition,<br\/>so, your reverences,<br\/>if while this monk is recollecting the Awakened One,<br\/>if while this monk is recollecting the dhamma,<br\/>if while this monk is recollecting the Order,<br\/>the equanimity that depends on skill<br\/>is not established (in him);<br\/>he is strongly moved because of this,<br\/>he comes to a strongly moved condition,<br\/>and thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is unprofitable for me,<br\/>it is not profitable for liquid element?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever is liquid,<br\/>fluid,<br\/>is internal,<br\/>referable to an individual<br\/>or derived therefrom,<br\/>that is to say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">bile,<br\/>phlegm,<br\/>pus,<br\/>blood,<br\/>sweat,<br\/>fat,<br\/>tears,<br\/>serum,<br\/>saliva,<br\/>mucus,<br\/>synovial fluid,<br\/>urine<br\/>or whatever other thing is liquid,<br\/>fluid,<br\/>is internal,<br\/>referable to an individual<br\/>or derived therefrom &#8211;<br\/>this, your reverences,<br\/>is called the internal liquid element.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever is an internal liquid element<br\/>and whatever is an external liquid element,<br\/>just these are the liquid element.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By means of perfect intuitive wisdom<br\/>it should be seen of this<br\/>as it really is, thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This is not mine,<br\/>this am I not,<br\/>this is not my self.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> a hundred <i>yojanas<\/i>,<br\/>and when they go down two hundred <i>yojanas<\/i>,<br\/>and when they go down three hundred <i>yojanas<\/i>,<br\/>and when they go down four hundred <i>yojanas<\/i>,<br\/>and when they go down five hundred <i>yojanas<\/i>,<br\/>and when they go down six hundred <i>yojanas<\/i><br\/>and when they go down seven hundred <i>yojanas<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There comes to be a time, your reverences,<br\/>when the water in the great ocean<br\/>stands at (the height of) seven palm trees (in depth),<br\/>when the water stands at (the height of) six palm trees (in depth),<br\/>when the water stands at (the height of) five palm trees (in depth),<br\/>when the water stands at (the height of) four palm trees (in depth),<br\/>when the water stands at (the height of) three palm trees (in depth),<br\/>when the water stands at (the height of) two palm trees (in depth)<br\/>and when the water stands at (the height of) one palm tree (in depth).<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There comes to be a time, your reverences,<br\/>when the water in the great ocean stands at (the depth of) seven men&#8217;s stature,<br\/>when the water in the great ocean stands at (the depth of) six men&#8217;s stature,<br\/>when the water in the great ocean stands at (the depth of) five men&#8217;s stature,<br\/>when the water in the great ocean stands at (the depth of) four men&#8217;s stature,<br\/>when the water in the great ocean stands at (the depth of) three men&#8217;s the internal heat element?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever is heat,<br\/>warmth,<br\/>is internal,<br\/>referable to an individual<br\/>and derived therefrom,<br\/>such as by whatever one is vitalised,<br\/>by whatever one is consumed,<br\/>by whatever one is burnt up,<br\/>and by whatever one has munched,<br\/>drunk,<br\/>eaten<br\/>and tasted<br\/>that is properly transmuted (in digestion),<br\/>or whatever other thing is heat,<br\/>warmth,<br\/>is internal,<br\/>referable to an individual<br\/>or derived therefrom-this, your reverences,<br\/>is called the internal heat element.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever is an internal element of heat<br\/>and whatever is an external element of heat,<br\/>just these are the element of heat.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By means of perfect intuitive <a id=\"pg235\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[235]<\/b><\/span><\/a> wisdom<br\/>it should be seen of this as it really is, thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This is not mine,<br\/>this am I not,<br\/>this is not myself.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having seen this thus<br\/>as it really is<br\/>by means of perfect intuitive wisdom,<br\/>he disregards the heat element,<br\/>he cleanses his mind of the heat element.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There comes a time, your reverences,<br\/>when the element of heat that is external is agitated,<br\/>and it burns up villages<br\/>and it burns up little towns<br\/>and it burns up towns<br\/>and it burns up districts<br\/>and it burns up districts and regions.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When it has come to the end of the crops<br\/>or to the end of a highway<br\/>or to the end of a mountain<br\/>or to the end of water<br\/>or to a lovely stretch of level ground,<br\/>it is extinguished<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn23\" href=\"#n23\">23<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> through lack of fuel.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There comes to be a time, your reverences,<br\/>when people seek to light a fire<br\/>with a cock&#8217;s feather<br\/>or with snippets of gristle.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The impermanence of this ancient external element of heat can be shown, your reverences,<br\/>its liability to destruction can be shown,<br\/>its liability to decay can be shown,<br\/>its liability to change can be shown.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So what of this short-lived body<br\/>derived from craving?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is not anything here for saying,<br\/>&#8216;I&#8217;<br\/>or &#8216;mine&#8217;<br\/>or &#8216;I am.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your href=\"#n27\">27<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The impermanence of this ancient external element of motion can be shown, your reverences,<br\/>its liability to destruction can be shown,<br\/>its liability to decay can be shown,<br\/>its liability to change can be shown.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So what of this short-lived body<br\/>derived from craving?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is not anything here for saying,<br\/>&#8216;I&#8217;<br\/>or &#8216;mine&#8217;<br\/>or &#8216;I am.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences,<br\/>if others abuse,<br\/>revile,<br\/>annoy,<br\/>vex this monk,<br\/>he comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This painful feeling that has arisen in me<br\/>is born of sensory impingement on the ear,<br\/>it has a cause,<br\/>not no cause.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the cause?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sensory impingement is the cause.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He sees that sensory impingement is impermanent,<br\/>he sees that feeling is impermanent,<br\/>he sees that perception is impermanent,<br\/>he sees that the habitual tendencies are impermanent,<br\/>he sees that consciousness is impermanent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">His mind rejoices,<br\/>is pleased,<br\/>composed<br\/>and is set on the objects of the element.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, your reverences,<br\/>others comport themselves in undesirable,<br\/>disagreeable,<br\/>unpleasant ways<br\/>towards that monk,<br\/>and he receives blows from their hands<br\/>and from clods of earth<br\/>and from sticks<br\/>and weapons,<br\/>he comprehends thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This body is such<br\/>that blows from hands affect it<br\/>and blows from clods of earth affect it<br\/>and blows from sticks affect it<br\/>and blows from weapons affect it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this was said by the Lord<br\/>in the Parable of the Saw:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If, monks,<br\/>low-down thieves should carve you limb from limb<br\/>with a two-handled saw,<br\/>whoever sets his heart at enmity,<br\/>he, for this reason,<br\/>is not a doer of my teaching.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Unsluggish energy shall come to be stirred up by me,<br\/>unmuddled mindfulness set up,<br\/>the body tranquillised,<br\/>impassible,<br\/>the mind composed and one-pointed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, willingly,<br\/>let blows from hands affect this body,<br\/>let blows from clods of earth this body,<br\/>let blows from sticks this body,<br\/>let blows from weapons affect it,<br\/>for this teaching of the Awakened Ones is being done.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p
