one time the Lord was staying among the  <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#vajjians\">Vajjis<\/a><br\/>at Ukk\u0101cel\u0101 on the banks of the river Ganges.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered one,&#8221;<br\/>these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Formerly, monks,<br\/>an incompetent cowherd of Magadha<br\/>in the last month of the rains<br\/>at harvest time,<br\/>without considering the hither bank of the river Ganges,<br\/>without considering the further bank,<br\/>drove his cattle across to the further bank<br\/>in Suvideh\u0101<br\/>at a place where there was no ford.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the cattle huddled together<br\/>in the middle of the stream of the river Ganges,<br\/>got into difficulties and misfortune there.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What was the cause?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was, monks,<br\/>that that incompetent cowherd of Magadha<br\/>in the last month of the rains<br\/>at harvest time,<br\/>without considering the hither bank of the river Ganges,<br\/>without considering the further bank,<br\/>drove the cattle across to the further bank<br\/>in Suvideh\u0101<br\/>at a place where there was no ford.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks,<br\/>any recluses or brahmans who are unskilled about this world,<br\/>unskilled about the world beyond,<br\/>unskilled about M\u0101ra&#8217;s realm,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>unskilled about what is not M\u0101ra&#8217;s realm,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>unskilled about Death&#8217;s realm,<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> unskilled about what is not Death&#8217;s realm<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>whoever think they should listen to these (recluses and brahmans)<br\/>and put their faith in them,<br\/>that will be for a long time<br\/>for their woe and anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Once upon a time, monks,<br\/>a competent cowherd of Magadha<br\/>in the last month of the rains<br\/>at harvest time,<br\/>having considered the hither bank of the river Ganges,<br\/>having considered the further <a id=\"pg277\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[277]<\/b><\/span><\/a> bank,<br\/>drove his cattle across to the further bank<br\/>in Suvideh\u0101<br\/>at a place where there was a ford.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">First of all<br\/>he drove across those bulls<br\/>who were the sires and leaders of the herd &#8211;<br\/>these, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then he drove across<br\/>the sturdy bullocks<br\/>and young steers &#8211;<br\/>these, also, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then he drove across<br\/>the half-grown bull-calves and heifers &#8211;<br\/>these too, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then he drove across<br\/>the weaker calves &#8211;<br\/>these too, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At that time<br\/>there was a young new-born calf<br\/>which, by following the lowing of its mother,<br\/>also cut across the stream of the Ganges<br\/>and went safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What was the cause of this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was, monks,<br\/>that that cowherd of Magadha<br\/>in the last month of the rains<br\/>at harvest time,<br\/>having considered the hither bank of the river Ganges,<br\/>having considered the further about Death&#8217;s realm,<br\/>skilled about what is not Death&#8217;s realm &#8211;<br\/>whoever think they should listen to these (recluses and brahmans)<br\/>and put their faith in them,<br\/>that will be for a long time<br\/>for their welfare and happiness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, like unto those bulls<br\/>who were the sires and leaders of the herd,<br\/>and who, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond,<br\/>are those monks who are perfected ones,<br\/>the cankers destroyed,<br\/>who have lived the life,<br\/>done what was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>attained their own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming being utterly destroyed,<br\/>and who are freed by perfect profound knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For these,<br\/>having cut across M\u0101ra&#8217;s stream,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>have gone safely beyond.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, like unto those sturdy bullocks<br\/>and young steers<br\/>who, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond,<br\/>are those monks who,<br\/>by destroying the five fetters<br\/>binding to this lower world,<br\/>are of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>and being ones who attain <i>nibb\u0101na<\/i> there,<br\/>are not liable to return from that world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For these also,<br\/>having cut across M\u0101ra&#8217;s stream,<br\/>will go safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg279\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[279]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Monks, like unto those half-grown bull-calves and heifers<br\/>who, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond,<br\/>are those monks who,<br\/>by destroying the three fetters,<br\/>by reducing attachment, aversion and confusion,<br\/>are once-returners<br\/>who, having come back again to this world once only,<br\/>will make an end of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For these also,<br\/>having cut across M\u0101ra&#8217;s stream,<br\/>will go safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, like unto those weaker calves<br\/>who, having cut across the stream of the Ganges,<br\/>went safely beyond,<br\/>are those monks who, by destroying the three fetters,<br\/>are stream-attainers,<br\/>not liable for the abyss,<br\/>assured,<br\/>bound for awakening.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For these also,<br\/>having cut across M\u0101ra&#8217;s stream,<br\/>will go safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, like unto that young new-born calf<br\/>which, by following the lowing of its mother,<br\/>also cut across the stream of the Ganges<br\/>and went safely beyond,<br\/>are those monks who are striving for <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>striving for faith.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For these also,<br\/>having cut across M\u0101ra&#8217;s stream,<br\/>will go safely beyond.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now I, monks, am skilled about this world,<br\/>skilled about the world beyond,<br\/>skilled about M\u0101ra&#8217;s realm,<br\/>skilled about what is not M\u0101ra&#8217;s realm,<br\/>skilled about Death&#8217;s realm,<br\/>skilled about what is not Death&#8217;s realm.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">To those who think they should listen to me<br\/>and place faith in me,<br\/>there will be welfare and happiness<br\/>for a long
