href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/mnl\/mn\/mn.035.upal.mnl.htm#p1\">upal<\/a>]<\/span> THUS have I heard:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At one time the Lord was staying near <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#vesali\">Ves\u0101l\u012b<\/a><br\/>in the Great Grove in the hall of the Gabled House.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time,<br\/>staying at Ves\u0101l\u012b<br\/>was Saccaka, the son of Jains,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>a controversialist,<br\/>giving himself out as learned,<br\/>much honoured by the manyfolk.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was going about Ves\u0101l\u012b,<br\/>he used to utter this speech:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I do not see that recluse or brahman,<br\/>the head of a company,<br\/>the head of a group,<br\/>the teacher of a group,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>even if he is claiming to be a perfected one,<br\/>a fully Self-awakened one,<br\/>who, when taken in hand by me,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>would not tremble,<br\/>would not shake,<br\/>would not shake violently,<br\/>and from whose armpits<br\/>sweat would not pour.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even if I were to take in hand,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>an insensate post,<br\/>even that,<br\/>when taken in hand by me,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>would tremble,<br\/>would shake,<br\/>would shake violently &#8211;<br\/>let alone a human being.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable <a href=\"https:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/dhamma-vinaya\/pts\/mn\/backmatter\/appendixes\/personalities\/assaji.htm\">Assaji,<\/a><span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>having dressed in the morning,<br\/>taking his bowl and robe,<br\/>entered Ves\u0101l\u012b for almsfood.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>who was always pacing up and down,<br\/>always roaming about on foot,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>saw the venerable Assaji coming in the distance;<br\/>having seen him,<br\/>he approached the venerable Assaji;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the venerable Assaji,<br\/>and having exchanged greetings of courtesy and friendliness,<br\/>he stood at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was standing at a respectful distance,<br\/>Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>spoke thus to the venerable Assaji:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How, good Assaji,<br\/>does the recluse Gotama train disciples?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what are the divisions<br\/>by which a great part of the recluse Gotama&#8217;s instruction for disciples proceeds?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Thus, Aggivessana,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>does the Lord train disciples,<br\/>and by such <a id=\"pg281\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[281]<\/b><\/span><\/a> divisions<br\/>does a great part of the Lord&#8217;s instruction for disciples proceed:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Material shape, monks, is impermanent,<br\/>feeling is impermanent,<br\/>perception is impermanent,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are impermanent,<br\/>consciousness is impermanent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Material shape, monks, is not self,<br\/>feeling is not self,<br\/>perception is not self,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are not self,<br\/>consciousness is not self;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">all conditioned things<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> are impermanent,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">all things<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> are not self.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus, Aggivessana, does the Lord train disciples,<br\/>and by such divisions<br\/>does the great part of the Lord&#8217;s instruction for disciples proceed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Indeed, we heard with disappointment,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> good Assaji,<br\/>those of us who heard<br\/>that the recluse Gotama spoke like this.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Perhaps we could meet the good Gotama somewhere,<br\/>sometime,<br\/>perhaps there might be some conversation,<br\/>perhaps we could dissuade him<br\/>from that pernicious view.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time<br\/>at least five hundred Licchavis<br\/>were gathered together in the conference hall<br\/>on some business or other.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>approached those Licchavis;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he spoke thus to those Licchavis:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let the good Licchavis come forward,<br\/>let the good Licchavis come forward.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Today there will be conversation<br\/>between me and the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If the recluse Gotama takes up his stand against me,<br\/>as one of his well known disciples,<br\/>the monk Assaji,<br\/>has taken up his stand against me,<br\/>even as<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> a powerful man,<br\/>having taken hold of the fleece<br\/>of a long-fleeced ram,<br\/>might tug it towards him,<br\/>might tug it backwards,<br\/>might tug it forwards and backwards,<br\/>even so will I,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>tug the recluse Gotama forwards,<br\/>tug him backwards,<br\/>tug him forwards and backwards.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And even as a powerful distiller of spirituous liquor,<br\/>having sunk his crate for spirituous liquor<br\/>in a deep pool of water,<br\/>taking it by a corner<br\/>would tug it forwards,<br\/>would tug it backwards,<br\/>would tug it forwards and backwards,<br\/>even so will I,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>tug the recluse Gotama forwards,<br\/>tug him backwards,<br\/>tug him forwards and backwards.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And even as a powerful drunkard of abandoned life,<br\/>having taken hold of a hair-sieve at the corner,<br\/>would shake it upwards,<br\/>would shake it downwards,<br\/>would toss it about,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>even <a id=\"pg282\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[282]<\/b><\/span><\/a> so will I,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>shake the recluse Gotama upwards,<br\/>shake him downwards,<br\/>toss him about.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And even as a full-grown elephant,<br\/>sixty years old,<br\/>having plunged into a deep tank,<br\/>plays at the game called<br\/>the &#8216;merry washing,&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>even so, methinks,<br\/>will I play the game of &#8216;merry washing&#8217;<br\/>with the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let the good Licchavis come forward,<br\/>let the good Licchavis come forward;<br\/>today there will be conversation<br\/>between me and the recluse Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then some Licchavis spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How can the recluse Gotama<br\/>refute Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>when it is Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>who will refute the recluse Gotama?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Some Licchavis spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How can he, being only<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>refute the Lord<br\/>when it is the Lord<br\/>who will refute Saccaka, the son of Jains?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>surrounded by at least five hundred Licchavis,<br\/>approached the Great Wood,<br\/>and the hall of the Gabled House.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time<br\/>several monks were pacing up and down in the open air.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Saccaka, the son of Jains, approached these monks;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he spoke thus to these monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good sirs, where is this revered Gotama staying now?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We are anxious to see the revered Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Aggivessana,<br\/>this Lord,<br\/>having plunged into the Great Wood,<br\/>is sitting down for the day-sojourn<br\/>at the root of a tree.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>together with a great company of Licchavis,<br\/>having plunged into the Great Wood,<br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the Lord;<br\/>having exchanged greetings of friendliness and courtesy,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And these Licchavis too &#8211;<br\/>some having greeted the Lord,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">some <a id=\"pg283\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[283]<\/b><\/span><\/a> exchanged greetings with the Lord,<br\/>and having exchanged greetings of friendliness and courtesy,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">some, having saluted the Lord with outstretched palms,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">some, having made known their names and clans in the Lord&#8217;s presence,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">some, having become silent,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>Saccaka, the son of Jains, spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I would ask the revered Gotama about a point<br\/>if the revered Gotama grants me permission<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> to ask a question.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Ask, \u0100ggivessana, whatever you like.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How does the good Gotama train disciples?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what are the divisions<br\/>by which a great part of the good Gotama&#8217;s instructions for disciples proceeds?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Thus do I, \u0100ggivessana, train disciples,<br\/>and by such divisions<br\/>does the great part of my instruction for disciples proceed:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Material shape, monks, is impermanent,<br\/>feeling is impermanent,<br\/>perception is impermanent,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are impermanent,<br\/>consciousness is impermanent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Material shape, monks, is not self,<br\/>feeling is not self,<br\/>perception is not self,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are not self,<br\/>consciousness is not self;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">all conditioned things are impermanent,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">all things are not self.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus, \u0100ggivessana, do I train disciples,<br\/>and by such divisions<br\/>does the great part of my instruction for disciples proceed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;A simile occurs to me, good Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Speak it forth, \u0100ggivessana,&#8221; the Lord said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, as<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> all seed growths<br\/>and vegetable growths<br\/>come to growth,<br\/>increase<br\/>and maturity<br\/>because all depend on the earth<br\/>and are based on the earth,<br\/>and it is thus that these seed growths<br\/>and vegetable growths<br\/>come to growth,<br\/>increase<br\/>and maturity;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">as, good Gotama, all those strenuous occupations<br\/>that are carried on<br\/>depend on the earth<br\/>and are based on the earth,<br\/>and it is thus that these strenuous occupations are carried on;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">so, good Gotama, that person<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> whose self is material shape,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>because it is based on material shape,<br\/>begets either merit or demerit,<br\/>this person whose self is feeling,<br\/>because it is based on feeling,<br\/>begets either merit or demerit,<br\/>this person whose self is perception,<br\/>because it is based <a id=\"pg284\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[284]<\/b><\/span><\/a> on perception,<br\/>begets either merit or demerit,<br\/>this person whose self is the habitual tendencies,<br\/>because it is based on the habitual tendencies,<br\/>begets either merit or demerit,<br\/>this person whose self is consciousness,<br\/>because it is based on consciousness,<br\/>begets either merit or demerit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Can it be, Aggivessana,<br\/>that yon speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Material shape is my self,<br\/>feeling is my self,<br\/>perception is my self,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are my self,<br\/>consciousness is my self&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But I, good Gotama,<br\/>do speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Material shape is my self,<br\/>feeling is my self,<br\/>perception is my self,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are my self,<br\/>consciousness is my self.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And so does this great concourse.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What has this great concourse to do with you, Aggivessana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Please do you, Aggivessana,<br\/>unravel just your own words.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But I, good Gotama, speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Material shape is my self,<br\/>feeling is my self,<br\/>perception is my self,<br\/>the habitual tendencies are my self,<br\/>consciousness is my self.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Well then, Aggivessana,<br\/>I will question you in return about this matter.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">You may answer me as you please.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What do you think about this, Aggivessana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Would a noble anointed king,<br\/>such as King Pasenadi of Kosala<br\/>or such as King Aj\u0101tasattu of Magadha,<br\/>the son of the lady of Videh\u0101,<br\/>have power in his own territory<br\/>to put to death<br\/>one deserving to be put to death,<br\/>to plunder<br\/>one deserving to be plundered,<br\/>to banish<br\/>one deserving to be banished?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, a noble anointed king,<br\/>such as King Pasenadi of Kosala<br\/>or such as King Aj\u0101tasattu of Magadha,<br\/>the son of the lady of Videh\u0101,<br\/>would have power in his own territory<br\/>to put to death<br\/>one deserving to be put to death,<br\/>to plunder<br\/>one deserving to be plundered,<br\/>to banish<br\/>one deserving to be banished.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Why, good Gotama,<br\/>even among these companies and groups,<br\/>namely of the Vajjis and Mallas,<br\/>there exists the power in their own territories<br\/>to put to death<br\/>one deserving to be put to death,<br\/>to plunder<br\/>one deserving to be plundered,<br\/>to banish<br\/>one deserving to be banished.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">How much more then a noble anointed king,<br\/>such as King Pasenadi of Kosala<br\/>or such as King Aj\u0101tasattu of Magadha,<br\/>the son of the lady of Videh\u0101?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He would have the power, good Gotama,<br\/>and he deserves to have the power.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Aggivessana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When you speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Material shape is my self,&#8217;<br\/>have you power over this material shape of yours<br\/>(and can say),<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let my material shape be thus&#8221;,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let my material shape be not thus&#8221;&#8216;?&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg285\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[285]<\/b><\/span><\/a> When this had been said, Saccaka, the son of Jains, became silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time the Lord spoke thus to Saccaka, the son of Jains:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Aggivessana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When you speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Material shape is my self,&#8217;<br\/>have you power over this material shape of yours<br\/>(and can say),<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let my material shape be thus&#8221;,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let my material shape be not thus&#8221;&#8216;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time Saccaka, the son of Jains, became silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord spoke thus to Saccaka, the son of Jains:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Answer now, Aggivessana,<br\/>now is not the time for you to become silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whoever, Aggivessana,<br\/>on being asked a legitimate question<br\/>up to the third time<br\/>by the <i>Tath\u0101gata<\/i><br\/>does not answer,<br\/>verily his skull splits into seven pieces.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time the <i>yakkha<\/i> Thunderbolt-bearer,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>taking his iron thunderbolt<br\/>which was aglow,<br\/>ablaze,<br\/>on fire,<br\/>came to stand above the ground over Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>and said:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If this Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>does not answer<br\/>when he is asked a legitimate question<br\/>up to the third time<br\/>by the Lord,<br\/>verily I will make his skull<br\/>split into seven pieces.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And only the Lord saw this <i>yakkha<\/i> Thunderbolt-bearer,<br\/>and Saccaka, the son of Jains.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>afraid,<br\/>agitated,<br\/>his hair standing on end,<br\/>seeking protection with the Lord,<br\/>seeking shelter with the Lord,<br\/>seeking refuge with the Lord,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let the revered Gotama ask me,<br\/>I will answer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I do not see that recluse or brahman,<br\/>the head of a company,<br\/>the head of a group,<br\/>the teacher of a group,<br\/>even if he is claiming to be a perfected one,<br\/>a fully Self-awakened one,<br\/>who, when taken in hand by me,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>would not tremble,<br\/>would not shake,<br\/>would not shake violently,<br\/>and from whose armpits<br\/>sweat would not pour.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even if I were to take in hand,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>an insensate post,<br\/>even that,<br\/>when taken in hand by me,<br\/>speech by speech,<br\/>would tremble,<br\/>would shake,<br\/>would shake violently &#8211;<br\/>let alone a human being.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But it is from your brow, Aggivessana,<br\/>that class=\"f4\">Then, Lord, several boys or girls,<br\/>having come out from that village or little town,<br\/>might approach that lotus-tank,<br\/>and having approached,<br\/>having plunged into that lotus-tank,<br\/>having lifted the crab out of the water,<br\/>might place it on the dry land.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And whenever that crab, Lord,<br\/>might thrust out a claw,<br\/>as often might those boys or girls<br\/>hack<br\/>and break<br\/>and smash it<br\/>with a piece of wood<br\/>or a potsherd.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus, Lord, that crab<br\/>with all its consent (to accept) a meal with me on the morrow<br\/>together with the Order of monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord consented by becoming silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Saccaka, the son of Jains,<br\/>having understood the Lord&#8217;s consent,<br\/>addressed those Licchavis, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let the good Licchavis listen to me:<br\/>the recluse Gotama is invited for a meal on the morrow<br\/>together with the Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Prepare anything of mine that you think will be suitable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then these Licchavis,<br\/>towards the end of that night,<br\/>prepared five hundred offerings<br\/>of rice cooked in milk<br\/>as the gift of
