the <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#rd_angas\">A\u1e45gas<\/a>;<br\/>a township of the A\u1e45gas was called <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#assapura\">Assapura<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there<br\/>the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered one,&#8221; these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;&#8216;Recluses, recluses,&#8217;<br\/>so the people know you, monks,<br\/>and you,<br\/>on being asked:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Who are you?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">should acknowledge:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We are recluses.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Such being your designations, monks,<br\/>such being your vocations,<br\/>thus you should train yourselves, monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will go forward<br\/>undertaking those things<br\/>that are to be done by recluses,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that are to be done by brahmans;<br\/>thus will this designation of ours<br\/>become true<br\/>and the vocation real;<br\/>and the gifts of those things we make use of &#8211;<br\/>robe-material,<br\/>almsfood,<br\/>lodgings,<br\/>medicine for the sick &#8211;<br\/>will come to be of great fruit,<br\/>of great advantage to us;<br\/>and this our going forth<br\/>will come to be not barren<br\/>but fruitful<br\/>and growing.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, monks,<br\/>are the things to be done by recluses<br\/>and to be done by brahmans?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will become endowed with modesty<br\/>and fear of blame<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> conduct<br\/>will we exalt ourselves or disparage others&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>thus must you train yourselves, monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But it may occur to you, monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We are endowed with modesty<br\/>and fear of blame;<br\/>our bodily conduct is quite pure &#8211;<br\/>to this extent there is enough,<br\/>to this <a without defects,<br\/>controlled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But not on account of this perfectly pure mode of living<br\/>will we exalt ourselves or disparage others&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>thus done?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We must be guarded as to the doors of the sense-organs;<br\/>having seen a material shape with the eye<br\/>we are not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>we are not entranced by the detail;<br\/>for if <a id=\"pg327\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[327]<\/b><\/span><\/a> one had the organ of vision uncontrolled,<br\/>coveting and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will fare along for its control,<br\/>we will guard the organ of sight,<br\/>we will come to control over the organ of sight.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having heard a sound with the ear<br\/>we are not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>we are not entranced by the detail;<br\/>for if one had the organ of hearing uncontrolled,<br\/>coveting and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will fare along for its control,<br\/>we will guard the organ of hearing,<br\/>we will come to control over the organ of hearing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having smelt a smell with the nose<br\/>we are not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>we are not entranced by the detail;<br\/>for if one had the organ of smell uncontrolled,<br\/>coveting and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will fare along for its control,<br\/>we will guard the organ of smell,<br\/>we will come to control over the organ of smell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having savoured a taste with the tongue<br\/>we are not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>we are not entranced by the detail;<br\/>for if one had the organ of taste uncontrolled,<br\/>coveting and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will fare along for its control,<br\/>we will guard the organ of taste,<br\/>we will come to control over the organ of taste.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having felt a touch with the body<br\/>we are not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>we are not entranced by the detail;<br\/>for if one had the organ of touch uncontrolled,<br\/>coveting and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will fare along for its control,<br\/>we will guard the organ of touch,<br\/>we will come to control over the organ of touch.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having cognised a mental object with the mind<br\/>we are not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>we are not entranced by the detail;<br\/>for if one had the organ of mind uncontrolled,<br\/>coveting and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will fare along for its control,<br\/>we will guard the organ of mind,<br\/>we will come to control over the organ of mind&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>this is eat,<br\/>not for fun or pleasure<br\/>or adornment<br\/>or beautifying,<br\/>but just enough for maintaining this body<br\/>and keeping it going,<br\/>for keeping it from harm,<br\/>for furthering the Brahma-faring;<br\/>with the thought:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I am destroying old feeling,<br\/>and I must not allow new feeling to arise,<br\/>so that there will be blamelessness for me<br\/>and living in comfort&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>thus, monks, must you train yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But it may occur to you, monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p obstructive mental objects;<br\/>during the first watch of the night,<br\/>pacing up and down,<br\/>sitting down<br\/>we must cleanse the mind<br\/>from obstructive mental objects;<br\/>during the middle watch of the night,<br\/>we must lie down <a id=\"pg328\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[328]<\/b><\/span><\/a> on our right side<br\/>in the lion posture,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>placing one foot on the other,<br\/>mindful,<br\/>clearly conscious,<br\/>attending to the thought of getting up again;<br\/>during the last watch of the night,<br\/>rising,<br\/>pacing up and down,<br\/>sitting down,<br\/>we must cleanse the mind<br\/>from obstructive mental objects&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>thus, monks, must you train with clear consciousness,<br\/>whether looking down or looking around,<br\/>acting with clear consciousness,<br\/>whether bending back or stretching out (the arm),<br\/>acting with clear consciousness,<br\/>whether carrying the outer cloak, the bowl, the robe,<br\/>acting with clear consciousness,<br\/>whether munching, drinking, eating, savouring,<br\/>acting with clear consciousness,<br\/>when obeying the calls of nature,<br\/>acting with clear consciousness<br\/>when walking,<br\/>standing,<br\/>sitting,<br\/>asleep,<br\/>awake,<br\/>talking,<br\/>silent&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>thus, monks, must you train yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But it may occur to you, monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We are endowed with modesty<br\/>and done?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;In this case, monks,<br\/>a monk chooses a remote lodging<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> in a forest,<br\/>at the root of a tree,<br\/>on a mountain slope,<br\/>in a wilderness,<br\/>in a hill-cave,<br\/>in a <a id=\"pg329\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[329]<\/b><\/span><\/a> cemetery,<br\/>in a forest haunt,<br\/>in the open<br\/>or on a heap of straw.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Returning from alms-gathering<br\/>after the meal,<br\/>he sits down cross-legged,<br\/>holding the back erect,<br\/>having made mindfulness rise up in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, by getting rid of coveting for the world,<br\/>he dwells with a mind devoid of coveting,<br\/>he purifies the mind<br\/>of coveting.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of the taint of ill-will<br\/>he dwells benevolent in mind,<br\/>compassionate for the welfare<br\/>of all creatures and beings,<br\/>he purifies the mind<br\/>of the taint of ill-will.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of sloth and torpor,<br\/>he dwells devoid of sloth and torpor;<br\/>perceiving the light,<br\/>mindful,<br\/>clearly conscious,<br\/>he purifies the mind<br\/>of sloth and torpor.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of restlessness and worry,<br\/>he dwells calmly,<br\/>the mind subjectively tranqilised,<br\/>he purifies the mind<br\/>of restlessness and worry.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of doubt,<br\/>he dwells doubt-crossed,<br\/>unperplexed as to the states that are skilled,<br\/>he purifies the mind<br\/>of doubt.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as a man<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>after contracting a loan<br\/>might set some affairs going,<br\/>and if these affairs of his should succeed,<br\/>and if he should pay off those old original debts,<br\/>and if he had a surplus over<br\/>with which to maintain a wife,<br\/>it might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I, formerly,<br\/>after contracting a disease,<br\/>in pain,<br\/>seriously ill,<br\/>and could not digest his food,<br\/>and there were not strength in his body,<br\/>but if after a time<br\/>he were to recover from that disease<br\/>and could digest his food<br\/>and there were some strength in his body,<br\/>it might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Formerly I was a prey to disease,<br\/>in pain,<br\/>seriously ill,<br\/>and could not digest my food,<br\/>and there was no strength in my body,<br\/>but now I am recovered from that disease,<br\/>I digest my food,<br\/>there is some strength in my body.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, from this source,<br\/>would obtain joy,<br\/>he would reach gladness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks,<br\/>as a man might be bound in a prison,<br\/>but after a time<br\/>might be freed from those bonds,<br\/>safe and sound,<br\/>and with no loss of his property,<br\/>it might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Formerly I was bound in a prison,<br\/>but now I am freed from those bonds,<br\/>safe and sound,<br\/>and with no loss of my property.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, from this source<br\/>would obtain joy,<br\/>he would reach gladness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is as if a man had been a slave,<br\/>not his own master,<br\/><a id=\"pg330\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[330]<\/b><\/span><\/a> subject to others,<br\/>not able to go where he liked,<br\/>but who after a time<br\/>were freed from that slavery,<br\/>his own master,<br\/>not subject to others,<br\/>able to go where he liked;<br\/>it might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Formerly I was a slave,<br\/>not my own master,<br\/>subject to others,<br\/>not able to go where I liked,<br\/>but now I am freed from that slavery,<br\/>my own master,<br\/>not subject to others,<br\/>able to go where I like.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, from this source,<br\/>would obtain joy,<br\/>he would reach gladness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as a rich and prosperous man<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>might travel on a road through a wilderness<br\/>and after a time<br\/>might emerge safe and sound<br\/>and with no loss of his property,<br\/>it might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Formerly I,<br\/>rich and prosperous,<br\/>travelled on a road through a wilderness,<br\/>but now I have emerged<br\/>safe and sound<br\/>and with no loss of my property.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, from this source,<br\/>would obtain joy,<br\/>he would reach gladness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks,<br\/>does a monk regard these five hindrances<br\/>that are not got rid of from the self<br\/>as a debt,<br\/>as a disease,<br\/>as a prison,<br\/>as slavery,<br\/>as travelling on a road through a wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, monks,<br\/>when these five hindrances<br\/>are got rid of from the self,<br\/>a monk regards them as debtlessness,<br\/>as health,<br\/>as freedom from the bonds,<br\/>as liberty,<br\/>as secure ground.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of these five hindrances<br\/>which are defilements of the mind<br\/>and weakening to intuitive wisdom<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>then, aloof from pleasures of the senses,<br\/>aloof from unskilled states of mind,<br\/>he enters on and abides in<br\/>the first meditation<br\/>which is accompanied by initial thought<br\/>and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of aloofness,<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He drenches,<br\/>saturates,<br\/>permeates,<br\/>suffuses<br\/>this very body<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of aloofness;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of aloofness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as a skilled bath-attendant<br\/>or his apprentice,<br\/>having sprinkled bath-powder into a bronze vessel,<br\/>might knead it together with drops of water<br\/>until the ball of lather<br\/>has taken up moisture,<br\/>is drenched with moisture,<br\/>suffused with moisture inside and out,<br\/>but there is no oozing &#8211;<br\/>even so, monks, does a monk<br\/>drench,<br\/>saturate,<br\/>permeate,<br\/>suffuse<br\/>this very body<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of aloofness;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of aloofness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, a monk<br\/>by allaying initial and discursive <a id=\"pg331\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[331]<\/b><\/span><\/a> thought,<br\/>with the mind subjectively tranquillised<br\/>and fixed on one point,<br\/>enters on and abides in<br\/>the second meditation<br\/>which is devoid of initial and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of concentration<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He drenches,<br\/>saturates,<br\/>permeates,<br\/>suffuses<br\/>this very body<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of concentration;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of concentration.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as a pool of water<br\/>with water welling up within it,<br\/>but which has no inlet for water from the eastern side,<br\/>no inlet for water from the western side,<br\/>no inlet for water from the northern side,<br\/>no inlet for water from the southern side,<br\/>and even if the god did not send down showers upon it<br\/>from time to time,<br\/>yet a current of cool water<br\/>having welled up from that pool<br\/>would drench,<br\/>saturate,<br\/>permeate,<br\/>suffuse<br\/>that pool with cool water;<br\/>there would be no part of that pool<br\/>that was not suffused with cool water.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks, does a monk<br\/>drench,<br\/>saturate,<br\/>permeate,<br\/>suffuse<br\/>this very body<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of concentration;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with the rapture and joy<br\/>that are born of concentration.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, a monk<br\/>by the fading out of rapture,<br\/>dwells with equanimity,<br\/>attentive and clearly conscious<br\/>and experiences in his person<br\/>that joy of which the ariyans say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Joyful lives he<br\/>who has equanimity<br\/>and is mindful,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">and he enters on and abides in<br\/>the third meditation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He drenches,<br\/>saturates,<br\/>permeates,<br\/>suffuses<br\/>this very body<br\/>with the joy that has no rapture;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with the joy that has no rapture.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As in a pond of white lotuses<br\/>or a pond of red lotuses<br\/>or a pond of blue lotuses,<br\/>some white lotuses<br\/>or red lotuses<br\/>or blue lotuses<br\/>are born in the water,<br\/>grow up in the water,<br\/>never rising above the surface<br\/>but flourishing beneath it &#8211;<br\/>these from their roots to their tips<br\/>are drenched,<br\/>saturated,<br\/>permeated,<br\/>suffused<br\/>by cool water.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks, a monk<br\/>drenches,<br\/>saturates,<br\/>permeates,<br\/>suffuses<br\/>this very body<br\/>with the joy that has no rapture;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with the joy that has no rapture.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, a monk<br\/>by getting rid of joy<br\/>and by getting rid of anguish,<br\/>by the going down<br\/>of his former pleasures and sorrows,<br\/>enters on and abides in<br\/>the fourth meditation<br\/>which has neither anguish nor joy,<br\/>and which is entirely purified<br\/>by equanimity and mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, having suffused this very body<br\/>with a mind that is utterly pure,<br\/>utterly clean,<br\/>comes to be sitting down;<br\/>there <a id=\"pg332\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[332]<\/b><\/span><\/a> is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused<br\/>with a mind that is utterly pure,<br\/>utterly clean.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as a monk might be sitting down<br\/>who has clothed himself<br\/>including his head<br\/>with a white cloth,<br\/>no part of his whole body<br\/>would not be suffused<br\/>with the white cloth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks, a monk,<br\/>having suffused this very body<br\/>with a mind that is utterly pure,<br\/>utterly clean,<br\/>comes to be sitting down;<br\/>there is no part of his whole body<br\/>that is not suffused by a mind<br\/>that is utterly pure,<br\/>utterly clean.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, with his mind thus composed,<br\/>quite purified,<br\/>quite clarified,<br\/>without blemish,<br\/>without defilement,<br\/>grown soft and workable,<br\/>fixed,<br\/>immovable,<br\/>directs his mind to the knowledge<br\/>and recollection of former habitations:<br\/>thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One birth,<br\/>two births,<br\/>three births,<br\/>four births,<br\/>five births,<br\/>ten births,<br\/>twenty births,<br\/>thirty births,<br\/>forty births,<br\/>fifty births,<br\/>a hundred births,<br\/>a thousand births,<br\/>a hundred thousand births,<br\/>and many an eon of integration<br\/>and many an eon of disintegration<br\/>and many an eon of integration-disintegration;<br\/>such a one was I by name,<br\/>having such and such a clan,<br\/>such and such a colour,<br\/>so was I nourished,<br\/>such and such pleasant and painful experiences were mine,<br\/>so did the span of life end.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Passing from this,<br\/>I came to be in another state<br\/>where such a one was I by name,<br\/>having such and such a clan,<br\/>such and such a colour,<br\/>so was I nourished,<br\/>such and such pleasant and painful experiences were mine,<br\/>so did the span of life end.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Passing from this,<br\/>I arose here.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus he remembers divers former abodes in all their modes and detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is as if a man should go from his own village<br\/>to another village,<br\/>and should go from that village to another village,<br\/>and as if he should go back again from that village<br\/>to his own village.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now I went from my own village to a certain village,<br\/>there I stood in such a way,<br\/>sat in such a way,<br\/>spoke in such a way,<br\/>became silent in such a way.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And from that village I went to a certain village,<br\/>there I stood in such a way,<br\/>sat in such a way,<br\/>spoke in such a way,<br\/>became silent in such a way.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then I went back again from that village to my own village.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks, does a monk remember various former habitations, that is to say one birth,<br\/>two births,<br\/>three births,<br\/>four births,<br\/>five births,<br\/>ten births,<br\/>twenty births,<br\/>thirty births,<br\/>forty births,<br\/>fifty births,<br\/>a hundred births,<br\/>a thousand births,<br\/>a hundred thousand births,<br\/>and many an eon of integration<br\/>and many an eon of conduct of speech,<br\/>who were possessed of wrong conduct of thought,<br\/>scoffers at the ariyans,<br\/>holding a wrong view,<br\/>incurring deeds consequent on a wrong view &#8211;<br\/>these, at the breaking up of the body after dying,<br\/>have arisen in a sorrowful state,<br\/>a bad bourn,<br\/>the abyss,<br\/>Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But these worthy beings<br\/>who were possessed of good conduct in body,<br\/>who were possessed of good conduct in speech,<br\/>who were possessed of good conduct in thought,<br\/>who did not scoff at the ariyans,<br\/>holding a right view,<br\/>incurring deeds consequent on a right view &#8211;<br\/>these, at the breaking up of the body after dying,<br\/>have arisen in a good bourn,<br\/>a heaven world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus with the purified deva-vision<br\/>surpassing that of men<br\/>he sees beings as they pass hence<br\/>or come to be;<br\/>he comprehends that beings are mean,<br\/>excellent,<br\/>comely,<br\/>ugly,<br\/>well-going,<br\/>ill-going,<br\/>according to the consequences of their deeds.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is as if there were two house<br\/>and leaving it<br\/>and going back and forth<br\/>and walking across.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, monks, does a monk with the purified deva-vision<br\/><a id=\"pg333\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[333]<\/b><\/span><\/a> surpassing that of men<br\/>see beings as they pass hence<br\/>or come to be;<br\/>he comprehends that beings are mean,<br\/>excellent,<br\/>comely,<br\/>ugly,<br\/>well-going,<br\/>ill-going,<br\/>according to the consequences of their deeds,<br\/>and he thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Indeed these is:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This is anguish,<br\/>this is the arising of anguish,<br\/>this is the stopping of anguish,<br\/>this is the course leading to the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He understands as it really is:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These are the cankers,<br\/>this is the arising of the cankers,<br\/>this is the stopping of the cankers,<br\/>this is the course leading to the stopping of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he knows thus,<br\/>sees thus,<br\/>his mind is freed from the canker of sense-pleasures,<br\/>his mind is freed from the canker of becoming,<br\/>his mind is freed from the canker of ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In freedom<br\/>the knowledge comes to be<br\/>that he is freed,<br\/>and he comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Destroyed is birth,<br\/>brought to a close is the Brahma-faring,<br\/>done is what was to be done,<br\/>there is no more of being such or such.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is like<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> a pure,<br\/>limpid,<br\/>serene pool of water<br\/>in which a man with vision<br\/>standing on the bank<br\/>might see oysters<br\/>and shells,<br\/>also gravel<br\/>and pebbles,<br\/>and shoals of fish moving about<br\/>and keeping still.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It might occur to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This pool of water is pure,<br\/>limpid,<br\/>serene,<br\/>here these oysters and shells,<br\/>and gravel and pebbles,<br\/>and shoals of fish<br\/>are moving about<br\/>and keeping still.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p washen,<br\/>and who is expert in lore,<br\/>and who is learned,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and who is an ariyan,<br\/>and who is a perfected one.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And how, monks, is a monk a recluse?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Evil, unskilled states that are connected with the defilements,<br\/>with
