staying among the <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#assapura\">A\u1e45gas<\/a>;<br\/>a township of the A\u1e45gas was called Assapura.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg335\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[335]<\/b><\/span><\/a> &#8220;Revered one,&#8221;<br\/>these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;&#8216;Recluses, recluses,&#8217;<br\/>so the people know you, monks,<br\/>and you, on being asked:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Who are you?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">should acknowledge:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We are recluses.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Such being your, designations, monks,<br\/>such being your vocations,<br\/>thus you should train yourselves, monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will follow those practices<br\/>which are fitting for recluses;<br\/>thus will this designation of ours<br\/>become true<br\/>and the vocation real;<br\/>and the gifts of those things we make use of &#8211;<br\/>robe-material,<br\/>almsfood,<br\/>lodging,<br\/>medicines for the sick &#8211;<br\/>will come to be of great fruit,<br\/>of great advantage to us;<br\/>and this our going forth<br\/>will come to be not barren<br\/>but fruitful<br\/>and growing.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And how, monks, does a monk come to be one<br\/>who is not following the practice<br\/>that is fitting for recluses?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, in any monk who is covetous,<br\/>covetousness not got rid of;<br\/>who is malevolent in mind,<br\/>malevolence not got rid of;<br\/>who is wrathful,<br\/>wrath not got rid of;<br\/>who is grudging,<br\/>grudging not got rid of;<br\/>who is hypocritical,<br\/>hypocrisy not got rid of;<br\/>who is spiteful,<br\/>spite not got rid of;<br\/>who is jealous,<br\/>jealousy not got rid of;<br\/>who is stingy,<br\/>stinginess not got rid of;<br\/>who is treacherous,<br\/>treachery not got rid of;<br\/>who is crafty,<br\/>craftiness not got rid of;<br\/>who is of evil desires,<br\/>evil desires not got rid of;<br\/>who is of wrong view,<br\/>wrong view not got rid of &#8211;<br\/>I, monks, say<br\/>that if he does not follow<br\/>the practice fitting for recluses,<br\/>there is no getting rid of these stains on recluses,<br\/>defects in recluses,<br\/>faults in recluses,<br\/>occasions for the sorrowful states,<br\/>of what is to be experienced in a bad bourn.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as a deadly weapon<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> for class=\"f4\">And how, monks,<br\/>does a monk become one<br\/>following practices fitting for recluses?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In whatever monk who was covetous<br\/>covetousness is got rid of,<br\/>who was malevolent<br\/>malevolence of mind is got rid of,<br\/>who was wrathful<br\/>wrath is got rid of,<br\/>who was grudging<br\/>grudging is got rid of,<br\/>who was hypocritical<br\/>hypocrisy is got rid of,<br\/>who was spiteful<br\/>spite is got rid of,<br\/>who was jealous,<br\/>jealousy is got rid of,<br\/>who was stingy,<br\/>stinginess is got rid of,<br\/>who was treacherous,<br\/>treachery is got rid of,<br\/>who was crafty,<br\/>craftiness is got rid of,<br\/>who was of evil desires,<br\/>evil desire is got rid of,<br\/>who was of wrong view,<br\/>wrong view is got rid of,<br\/>I, monks, say<br\/>that if he follows the practice fitting for recluses,<br\/>there is a getting rid of those stains on recluses,<br\/>defects in recluses,<br\/>faults in recluses,<br\/>occasions for the sorrowful states,<br\/>of what is to be experienced in a bad bourn.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He beholds the self purified<br\/>of all these evil unskilled states,<br\/>he beholds the self freed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he beholds the self purified<br\/>of all these evil unskilled states,<br\/>when he beholds the self feed,<br\/>delight is born;<br\/>rapture is born from delight;<br\/>when he is in rapture<br\/>the body is impassible;<br\/>when the body is impassible<br\/>he experiences joy;<br\/>being
