Dasama of A\u1e6d\u1e6dhaka had arrived in P\u0101taliputta<br\/>on some business or other.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the householder Dasama of A\u1e6d\u1e6dhaka<br\/>approached a monk in Cock&#8217;s monastery;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>having approached,<br\/>having greeted that monk,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance<br\/>the householder Dasama of A\u1e6d\u1e6dhaka<br\/>spoke thus to that monk:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered sir,<br\/>where is the venerable \u0100nanda staying at present,<br\/>for we are anxious to see the venerable \u0100nanda?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Householder, the venerable \u0100nanda<br\/>is staying near Ves\u0101l\u012b<br\/>in Beluva hamlet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg15\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[15]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Then the householder Dasama of A\u1e6d\u1e6dhaka,<br\/>having concluded his business in P\u0101taliputta,<br\/>approached the venerable \u0100nanda<br\/>in Beluva thing<br\/>pointed out by that Lord who knows,<br\/>who sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/><a id=\"pt350\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.052.pali.bd.htm#pg350\"><span class=\"f2\">[350]<\/span><\/a> whereby if a monk dwell diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>his mind, not (yet) freed,<br\/>is freed;<br\/>or the cankers, not (yet) completely destroyed,<br\/>go to complete destruction;<br\/>or he attains<br\/>that matchless security from the bonds,<br\/>not (yet) attained?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;There is one thing, householder,<br\/>pointed out by that Lord who knows,<br\/>who sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened one,<br\/>whereby if a monk dwell diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>his mind not (yet) freed,<br\/>is freed;<br\/>and also the cankers,<br\/>not (yet) completely destroyed,<br\/>go to complete destruction;<br\/>and, too, he attains<br\/>the matchless security from the bonds,<br\/>not (yet) attained.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But what, revered \u0100nanda,<br\/>is this one thing<br\/>pointed out by the Lord who knows,<br\/>who sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened one,<br\/>whereby if a monk dwell diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>his mind not (yet) freed,<br\/>is freed;<br\/>and also the cankers,<br\/>not (yet) completely destroyed,<br\/>go to complete destruction;<br\/>and, too, he attains<br\/>the matchless security from the bonds,<br\/>not (yet) attained?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;As to this, householder, a monk,<br\/>aloof from the pleasures of the senses,<br\/>aloof from unskilled states of mind,<br\/>entering into the first meditation<br\/>which is accompanied by initial thought<br\/>and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of aloofness,<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful,<br\/>abides in it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This first meditation<br\/>is effected and thought out.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Firm in this,<br\/>he attains the destruction of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he does not attain the destruction of the cankers,<br\/>then by this attachment to <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by this delight in <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by the destruction<br\/>of the five fetters binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>he is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who attains <i>nibb\u0101na<\/i> there,<br\/>not liable to return from that world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, householder, is one thing<br\/>pointed out by the Lord who knows,<br\/>who sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened one,<br\/>whereby if a monk dwell diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>his mind not (yet) freed,<br\/>is freed;<br\/>and also the cankers,<br\/>not (yet) completely destroyed,<br\/>go to complete destruction;<br\/>and, too, he attains<br\/>the matchless security from the bonds,<br\/>not (yet) tranquillised<br\/>and fixed on one point,<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the second meditation<br\/>which is devoid of initial and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of concentration<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this<br\/>and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This second meditation<br\/>is also effected and thought out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg16\"><span by this attachment to <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>by this delight in <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by the destruction of the five fetters<br\/>binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>he is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who attains <i>nibb\u0101na<\/i> there,<br\/>not liable to return from that world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, householder,<br\/>is one thing pointed out by the Lord who knows,<br\/>who sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened one,<br\/><a id=\"pt351\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.052.pali.bd.htm#pg351\"><span class=\"f2\">[351]<\/span><\/a> whereby if a monk dwell diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>his mind not (yet) freed,<br\/>is freed;<br\/>and also the cankers,<br\/>not (yet) completely destroyed,<br\/>go to complete destruction;<br\/>and, too, he attains<br\/>the matchless security from the bonds,<br\/>not (yet) attained.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, householder, a monk,<br\/>by the fading out of rapture,<br\/>dwells with equanimity,<br\/>attentive and clearly conscious,<br\/>and experiences in his person<br\/>that joy of which the ariyans say:<br\/>&#8216;Joyful lives he who has equanimity and is mindful,&#8217;<br\/>and he enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the third meditation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This third meditation is also effected and thought out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Firm in this,<br\/>he attains the destruction of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he does not attain the destruction of the cankers,<br\/>then by this attachment to <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by this delight in <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by the destruction<br\/>of the five fetters binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>he is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who attains <i>nibb\u0101na<\/i> there,<br\/>not liable to return from that world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, householder, is one thing<br\/>pointed out by the Lord who knows,<br\/>who sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened one,<br\/>whereby if a monk dwell diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>his mind not (yet) freed,<br\/>is freed;<br\/>and also the cankers,<br\/>not (yet) completely destroyed,<br\/>go to complete destruction;<br\/>and, too, he attains<br\/>the matchless security from the bonds,<br\/>not (yet) attained.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, householder, a monk,<br\/>by getting rid of joy,<br\/>by getting rid of anguish,<br\/>by the going down of his former pleasures and sorrows,<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the fourth meditation<br\/>which has neither anguish nor joy,<br\/>and which is entirely purified<br\/>by equanimity and mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This fourth meditation is also effected and thought out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Firm in this,<br\/>he attains the destruction of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he does not attain the destruction of the cankers,<br\/>then by this attachment to <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by this delight in <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by the destruction<br\/>of the five fetters binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>he is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who attains <i>nibb\u0101na<\/i> there,<br\/>not liable to return from that world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, householder, is one dwells,<br\/>having suffused the first quarter with a mind of friendliness,<br\/>likewise the second,<br\/>likewise the third,<br\/>likewise the fourth;<br\/>just so above,<br\/>below,<br\/>across;<br\/>he dwelt having suffused the whole world<br\/>everywhere,<br\/>in every way,<br\/>with a mind of friendliness<br\/>that was far-reaching,<br\/>wide-spread,<br\/>immeasurable,<br\/>without enmity,<br\/>without malevolence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This freedom of mind that is friendliness is also effected and thought out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Firm in this,<br\/>he attains the destruction of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he does not world<br\/>everywhere,<br\/>in every way,<br\/>with a mind of compassion<br\/>that was far-reaching,<br\/>wide-spread,<br\/>immeasurable,<br\/>without enmity,<br\/>without malevolence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This freedom of mind that is compassion is also effected and thought far-reaching,<br\/>wide-spread,<br\/>immeasurable,<br\/>without enmity,<br\/>without malevolence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This freedom of mind that is sympathetic joy is also effected and thought out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Firm in this,<br\/>he attains the destruction of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he does not variety,<br\/>thinking:<br\/>&#8216;Ether<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is unending,&#8217;<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in the plane of infinite ether.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This attainment of the plane of infinite ether is also effected and thought again, householder, monks, a monk<br\/>by wholly transcending the plane of infinite ether,<br\/>thinking:<br\/>&#8216;Consciousness is unending,&#8217;<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the plane of infinite consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He reflects on this and comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This attainment of the plane of infinite consciousness is also effected and thought out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But whatever is effected and thought out,<br\/>that is impermanent,<br\/>it is liable to stopping.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Firm in this,<br\/>he attains the destruction of the cankers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he does not attain the destruction of the cankers,<br\/>then by this attachment to <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by this delight in <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>by the destruction<br\/>of the five fetters binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>he is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who attains class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>at one and the same time<br\/>of eleven doors to the deathless.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And too, revered sir,<br\/>it is like a man&#8217;s house<br\/>that has eleven doors;<br\/>if his house were on fire<br\/>he could make himself safe<br\/>by any one of the doors.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so can I, revered sir,<br\/>make myself safe by any one<br\/>of these eleven doors to the deathless.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, revered sir,<br\/>members of other sects<br\/>will look about for a fee for the teacher,<br\/>but why should not I pay honour<br\/>to the venerable \u0100nanda?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the householder Dasama of A\u1e6d\u1e6dhaka,<br\/>having had the Order of monks<br\/>that was at P\u0101\u1e6daliputta and Ves\u0101l\u012b<br\/>gathered together,<br\/>with his own hand<br\/>served and satisfied them<br\/>with sumptuous foods,<br\/>solid and soft,<br\/>and presented each monk<br\/>with a separate pair of cloths;<br\/>to the venerable \u0100nanda<br\/>he presented a set of three robes<br\/>and
