tour in K\u0101si together with a large Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I, monks, do not eat a meal at night.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not eating a meal at night,<br\/>I, monks, am aware of good health<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Come, do you too, monks, not eat a meal at <a id=\"pg147\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[147]<\/b><\/span><\/a> night.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not eating a meal at night, you too, monks,<br\/>will be aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, revered sir,&#8221; these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord, walking on tour in K\u0101si,<br\/>in due course arrived at K\u012b\u1e6d\u0101giri,<br\/>a market town in K\u0101si.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord stayed at K\u012b\u1e6d\u0101giri,<br\/>the market town in K\u0101si.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time<br\/>the monks named Assaji and Punabbasuka<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>were residing in K\u012b\u1e6d\u0101giri.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then several monks approached the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka;<br\/>having approached, they spoke thus to them:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The Lord, your reverences, does not eat a meal at night,<br\/>nor does the Order of monks;<br\/>and because, your reverences, they do not eat a meal at night<br\/>they are aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Come, do you too, your reverences,<br\/>not eat a meal at night.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not eating a meal at night, you too, your reverences,<br\/>will be aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka spoke thus to these monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;We, your reverences,<br\/>eat in the evening<br\/>as well as in the morning<br\/>and during the day &#8211;<br\/>at the wrong time.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But although we eat in the evening<br\/>as well as in the morning<br\/>and during the day &#8211;<br\/>at the wrong time &#8211;<br\/>we are aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Why should we,<br\/>giving up the things of the present,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>run after those of the future?<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will eat in the evening<br\/>as well as in the morning<br\/>and during the day &#8211;<br\/>at the wrong time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So because these monks were unable to convince the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka,<br\/>they approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>having greeted the Lord,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As they were sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>these monks spoke <a id=\"pg148\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[148]<\/b><\/span><\/a> thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Now we, revered sir,<br\/>approached the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>we spoke thus to the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The Lord, your reverences, does not eat a meal at night,<br\/>nor does the Order of monks;<br\/>and because, your reverences, they do not eat a meal at night<br\/>they are aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Come, do you too, your reverences,<br\/>not eat a meal at night.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not eating a meal at night, you too, your reverences,<br\/>will be aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka spoke thus to these monks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;We, your reverences,<br\/>eat in the evening<br\/>as well as in the morning<br\/>and during the day &#8211;<br\/>at the wrong time.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But although we eat in the evening<br\/>as well as in the morning<br\/>and during the day &#8211;<br\/>at the wrong time &#8211;<br\/>we are aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Why should we,<br\/>giving up the things of the present,<br\/>run after those of the future?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We will eat in the evening<br\/>as well as in the morning<br\/>and during the day &#8211;<br\/>at the wrong time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is because we, revered sir,<br\/>were not able to convince the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka<br\/>that we are telling this matter to the Lord.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord summoned a certain monk, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Come you, monk,<br\/>in my name summon the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The Teacher is summoning the venerable ones.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, revered sir,&#8221;<br\/>and this monk, having answered the Lord in assent,<br\/>approached the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he spoke thus to the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The Teacher is summoning the venerable ones.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, your reverence,&#8221;<br\/>and the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka, having answered that monk in assent,<br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>having greeted the Lord,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As they were sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>the Lord spoke thus to the monks Assaji and Punabbasuka:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Is it true, as is said, monks,<br\/>that several monks, having approached you, spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The Lord, your reverences, does not eat a meal at night,<br\/>nor does the Order of monks;<br\/>and because, your reverences, they do not eat a meal at night<br\/>they are aware of good health<br\/>and of being without illness<br\/>and of buoyancy and strength<br\/>and living in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Come, do you too, your reverences,<br\/>not eat a meal at night.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p g\"><b>[149]<\/b><\/span><\/a> painful or neither painful nor pleasant &#8211;<br\/>unskilled states decline in him,<br\/>skilled states grow much?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;No, revered sir.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Did not you, monks, understand that <i>Dhamma<\/i> was taught thus by me:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For anyone here feeling a pleasant feeling of one kind<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>unskilled states<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> grow much,<br\/>skilled states decline,<br\/>but for anyone here feeling a pleasant feeling of another kind<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> unskilled states decline,<br\/>skilled states grow much;<br\/>for anyone here feeling a painful feeling of one kind<br\/>unskilled states grow much,<br\/>skilled states decline,<br\/>but for anyone here feeling a painful feeling of another kind<br\/>unskilled states decline,<br\/>skilled states grow much;<br\/>for anyone here feeling a feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant of one kind<br\/>unskilled states grow much,<br\/>skilled states decline,<br\/>but for anyone here feeling a feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant of another kind<br\/>unskilled states decline,<br\/>skilled states grow class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I, monks, do not say of all monks<br\/>that there is something to be done through diligence;<br\/>yet, I, monks, do not say of all monks<br\/>that there is not something to be done through diligence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, those monks who are perfected ones,<br\/>canker-waned,<br\/>who have lived the life,<br\/>done what there was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>who have attained their own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming utterly destroyed,<br\/>who are freed by right profound knowledge,<br\/>of monks such as these I do not say, monks,<br\/>that there is something to be done through diligence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the reason for this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It has (already) been done <a id=\"pg151\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[151]<\/b><\/span><\/a> by these through diligence,<br\/>these could not become negligent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, monks, those monks who are learners,<br\/>not attained to perfection,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>but who live striving for the incomparable security from the bonds,<br\/>of monks such as these I say, monks,<br\/>that there is something to be done through diligence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the reason for this?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even while these venerable ones are resorting to suitable lodgings,<br\/>associating with lovely friends,<br\/>and are themselves controlling their sense-organs,<br\/>having realized here and now by their own super-knowledge<br\/>that matchless goal of the Brahma-faring<br\/>for the sake of which young men of family<br\/>rightly go forth from home into homelessness,<br\/>entering on it,<br\/>they could abide in it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So I, monks, beholding this fruit of straightaway;<br\/>nevertheless, monks,<br\/>the attainment of profound knowledge<br\/>comes by a gradual training,<br\/>a gradual doing,<br\/>a gradual course.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pt480\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.070.pali.bd.htm#pg480\"><span class=\"f2\">[480]<\/span><\/a>And how, monks, does the attainment of profound knowledge<br\/>come by means of a gradual training,<br\/>a gradual <a id=\"pg155\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[155]<\/b><\/span><\/a> doing,<br\/>a gradual course?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monks,<br\/>one who has faith draws close;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn29\" href=\"#n29\">29<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>drawing close, he sits down near by;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn30\" href=\"#n30\">30<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>sitting down near by, he lends ear;<br\/>lending ear, he hears dhamma;<br\/>having heard <i>Dhamma,<\/i> he remembers it;<br\/>he tests the meaning<br\/>of the things he has borne in mind;<br\/>while testing the meaning<br\/>the things are approved of;<br\/>there being approval of the things<br\/>desire<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn31\" href=\"#n31\">31<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is born;<br\/>with desire born<br\/>he makes an effort;<br\/>having made the effort<br\/>he weighs it up;<br\/>having weighed it up<br\/>he strives;<br\/>being self-resolute<br\/>he realizes with his person<br\/>the highest truth itself and,<br\/>penetrating it by means of wisdom,<br\/>he sees.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn32\" href=\"#n32\">32<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, monks, had there not been that faith,<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that drawing close;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that sitting down near by;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that lending ear;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that hearing of dhamma;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that remembering of dhamma;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that testing of the meaning;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that approval of the things;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that desire;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that effort;<br\/>there would not have been, monks, that striving.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, you are on a wrong track,<br\/>you are on a false track, monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">How very far, monks,<br\/>have not these foolish persons<br\/>strayed from this <i>Dhamma<\/i> and discipline.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is a fourfold exposition, monks,<br\/>the meaning of which,<br\/>when it is recited,<br\/>an intelligent man could soon understand<br\/>by means of wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will recite it to you, monks,<br\/>you will understand it from me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Who are we, revered sir,<br\/>and who are the knowers of <i>Dhamma<\/i>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks, even a teacher who sets store on material things,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn33\" href=\"#n33\">33<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>is an heir to material things,<br\/>and lives in association with material things &#8211;<br\/>why, even to him,<br\/>this kind of higgling and haggling does not apply,<br\/><a id=\"pg156\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[156]<\/b><\/span><\/a> that (his followers) will or will not do this or that<br\/>according as they like it or not.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So what has this to do with the Tath\u0101gata<br\/>who lives dissociated from material things?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a disciple who has faith in the Teacher&#8217;s instruction<br\/>and lives in unison with it, monks,<br\/>it is a principle<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn34\" href=\"#n34\">34<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> that:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The Teacher is the Lord,<br\/>a disciple am I;<br\/>the Lord knows,<br\/>I do not know.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn35\" href=\"#n35\">35<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a disciple who has faith in the Teacher&#8217;s instruction<br\/>and lives in unison with it, monks,<br\/><a id=\"pt481\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.070.pali.bd.htm#pg481\"><span class=\"f2\">[481]<\/span><\/a> the Teacher&#8217;s instruction is a furthering in growth,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn36\" href=\"#n36\">36<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>giving strength.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn37\" href=\"#n37\">37<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a disciple who has faith in the Teacher&#8217;s instruction<br\/>and lives in unison with it, monks,<br\/>it is a principle that:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Gladly<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn38\" href=\"#n38\">38<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> would I be reduced<br\/>to skin and sinews and bone<br\/>and let my body&#8217;s flesh and blood<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn39\" href=\"#n39\">39<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> dry up<br\/>if there came to be a vortex of energy<br\/>so that that which is not (yet) won<br\/>might be won by human strength,<br\/>by human energy,<br\/>by human striving.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a disciple who has faith in the Teacher&#8217;s instruction<br\/>and lives in unison with it, monks,<br\/>one of two fruits is to be expected:<br\/>profound knowledge here and now,<br\/>or, if there is any basis (for rebirth remaining),<br\/>the state of no-return.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus spoke the At <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 188, <i>DA.<\/i> ii. 514, iii. 889 it is said that he is freed <i>r\u016bpak\u0101yaio<\/i> (from the body, or, class, <i>k\u0101ya = nik\u0101ya,<\/i> of material shape, <i>i.e.<\/i> body) through the incorporeal attainments, and <i>n\u0101mak\u0101yato<\/i> (from the class of mind, mental aggregates) through the Way. This kind of freedom is therefore from <i>n\u0101ma<\/i> and <i>r\u016bpa,<\/i> also the view of <i>SnA<\/i> ii. 594, <i>AA.<\/i> iv. 207. It does not mean &#8220;freed through heart and intellect&#8221; as sometimes stated, <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/chlm\/mn\/mn.065.chlm.sbb.htm#pg313\"><i>e.g. Fur. Dial.<\/i> i. 313.<\/a> <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 188, <i>DA.<\/i> iii. 889 say: emerging one by one from the four incorporeal attainments, having mastered the (volitional) activities (<i>sa\u1e45kh\u0101r\u0101:<\/i> of body, speech and thought), emerging from the cessation of the four attainments of arahantship, he has attained arahantship and is a non-returner &#8211; in this way it is fivefold. <i>DA.<\/i> ii. 514 says: emerging from the planes of infinite ether and so on, he has attained arahantship and is a non-returner, and emerging from cessation he has attained arahantship. It is fivefold <i>DA.<\/i> ii. 514 also cites <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/sbe\/kd\/snp\/kd.snp.faus.sbe.htm#v1074\"><i>Sn.<\/i> 1074,<\/a> which speaks of <i>n\u0101mak\u0101ya-vimvtto,<\/i> freed from the class of &#8220;name&#8221; (mind), or, freed from name and body? This explanation, attributed to C\u016b\u1e37a-Sumana, an Elder of Ceylon, and recorded at <i>DA.<\/i> ii. 514, is supposed to be the most authoritative interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n13\" href=\"#fn13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>phasaitv\u0101,<\/i> with v. 11. <i>phusitv\u0101, phussitv\u0101<\/i>; at <i>MA.<\/i> i. 162 it is said <i>n\u0101mak\u0101yena phusitv\u0101; p\u0101pu\u1e47itv\u0101 adhigantv\u0101 ti vutta\u0271 hoti,<\/i> having apprehended with (through, or while in) the psycho-physical compound (taking <i>k\u0101yo<\/i> as equal to <i>r\u016bpa<\/i>), having mastered, having won. <i>Cf.<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/an\/04_fours\/an04.087.pali.bd.htm#pg87\"><i>A.<\/i> ii. 87,<\/a> etc.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n14\" href=\"#fn14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>k\u0101yena,<\/i> which would appear to mean the <i>r\u016bpak\u0101ya<\/i> and the <i>n\u0101mak\u0101ya,<\/i> see <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pts\/mn\/mn.070.horn.pts.htm#fn12\">p. 151,<\/a> <i>n.<\/i> 3 above, and <i>SnA<\/i> ii. 594.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n15\" href=\"#fn15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup> These number eight, see <i>D.<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/dn\/dn.15.pali.bd.htm#pg70\">ii. 70-71.<\/a> At <i>MA.<\/i> i. 162 it is said that &#8220;peaceful&#8221; (or &#8220;calm,&#8221; <i>santa<\/i>) is because there is peace in regard to the factors, <i>a\u1e45ga,<\/i> as well as in regard to the object of meditation; while <i>vimokkha<\/i> means freed from opposing <i>dhamm\u0101<\/i> and intent on the object of meditation or thought.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n16\" href=\"#fn16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup> In respect of the object of thought and resultant (thought) they are devoid of material shapes, <i>MA.<\/i> i, 162.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n17\" href=\"#fn17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup> Having transcended (or, passed beyond) in the <i>jh\u0101na<\/i> on material spheres, <i>MA.<\/i> i. 162.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n18\" href=\"#fn18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>Pug.<\/i> 14, 73; quoted at <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 188, <i>DA.<\/i> ii. 512; <i>cf.<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/dhamma-vinaya\/pts\/mn\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/an\/09_nines\/an09.047.pali.bd.htm\"><i>A.<\/i> iv. 453.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n19\" href=\"#fn19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>k\u0101yasakkhin.<\/i> See <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/mn\/mn.065.pali.bd.htm#pg439\"><i>M.<\/i> i. 439,<\/a> <i>Pug.<\/i> 14, 73. MA.<\/i> iii. 193 calls this desire for what is skilled, <i>kusalachanda<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n32\" href=\"#fn32\">32<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>Cf.<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/an\/04_fours\/an04.113.pali.bd.htm#pg115\"><i>A.<\/i> ii. 115.<\/a> At <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 193 it is said that &#8220;he realizes the truth of nibb\u0101na <i>n\u0101mak\u0101yena,<\/i> by means of the class of name; and that &#8216;by means of wisdom&#8217; means he sees, having pierced by means of the wisdom of the Way which is connected with <i>n\u0101mak\u0101ya.<\/i>&#8221; <i>K\u0101yena,<\/i> &#8220;with the person&#8221;, would seem to mean the very opposite of &#8220;through the medium of his bodily senses&#8221; as at <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/chlm\/mn\/mn.070.chlm.sbb.htm#pg338\"><i>Fur. Dial.<\/i> i. 338.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n33\" href=\"#fn33\">33<\/a>]<\/sup> That is, a teacher who is &#8220;outside&#8221; the Buddhist fold.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n34\" href=\"#fn34\">34<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>anudhamma,<\/i> a (right) method; in accordance with <i>Dhamma<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n35\" href=\"#fn35\">35<\/a>]<\/sup> Here, according to <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 194: &#8220;The Lord knows the advantages in eating only once a day; I do not. But, because of my faith, I will eat only one meal a day, giving up eating three times daily.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n36\" href=\"#fn36\">36<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>rumhantya.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n37\" href=\"#fn37\">37<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>ojavant; MA.<\/i> iii. 194 says <i>sinehavant.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n38\" href=\"#fn38\">38<\/a>]<\/sup> As at <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/an\/02_twos\/an02.001-010.pali.bd.htm#pg50\"><i>A.<\/i> i. 50;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/dhamma-vinaya\/pts\/mn\/dhamma-vinaya\/pali\/sn\/02_nv\/sn02.12.022.pali.bd.htm\"><i>S.<\/i> ii. 28.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n39\" href=\"#fn39\">39<\/a>]<\/sup> <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 194 says that thus the application to the skin, sinews, bones, and the flesh and blood constitutes a fourfold energy. But the &#8220;fourfold exposition&#8221; is more likely to refer to the disciple who has faith.
