class=\"f4\">&#8220;Come, your reverences,<br\/>we will go to Devaka\u1e6da Pool so as to see the Cave.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, your reverence,&#8221; these monks answered the venerable \u0100nanda in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda,<br\/>together with many monks,<br\/>approached Devakata Pool.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time the wanderer Sandaka was sitting down<br\/>with the great company of wanderers<br\/>shouting out with a loud noise,<br\/>a great noise,<br\/>talking various kinds of inferior talk,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that is to say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">talk on kings,<br\/>thieves,<br\/>great ministers,<br\/>armies,<br\/>fears,<br\/>battles,<br\/>food,<br\/>drink,<br\/>clothes,<br\/>beds,<br\/>garlands,<br\/>scents,<br\/>relations,<br\/>vehicles,<br\/>villages,<br\/>market towns,<br\/>towns,<br\/>the country,<br\/>women,<br\/>heroes,<br\/>streets,<br\/>wells,<br\/>those departed before,<br\/>talk of diversity,<br\/>speculation about the world,<br\/>speculation about the sea,<br\/><a id=\"pt514\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg514\"><span class=\"f2\">[514]<\/span><\/a>talk about becoming or not becoming<br\/>thus or thus.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The wanderer Sandaka saw the venerable \u0100nanda coming in the distance;<br\/>seeing him, he called his own company to order,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good sirs, let there be little noise;<br\/>do not, good sirs, make a noise;<br\/>this is a disciple of the recluse Gotama who is coming &#8211;<br\/>the recluse \u0100nanda.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For as long as disciples of the recluse Gotama<br\/>have <a id=\"pg193\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[193]<\/b><\/span><\/a> been staying near Kosamb\u012b<br\/>the recluse \u0100nanda has been among them.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These venerable ones wish for little noise,<br\/>they are trained to little noise,<br\/>they are praisers of little noise.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he may consider approaching<br\/>if he knows that this is a company of little noise.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then these wanderers fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda approached the wanderer Sandaka.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The wanderer Sandaka spoke thus to the venerable \u0100nanda:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let the revered \u0100nanda come,<br\/>there is a welcome for the revered \u0100nanda;<br\/>it is long since the revered \u0100nanda made this opportunity,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that is to say<br\/>for coming here.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let the revered \u0100nanda sit down,<br\/>this seat is ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda sat down on the seat that was ready.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And the wanderer Sandaka,<br\/>having taken a low seat,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda spoke thus<br\/>to the wanderer Sandaka<br\/>as he was sitting down at a respectful distance:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What is the talk<br\/>for which you are now gathered together here, Sandaka?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what was your talk<br\/>that was interrupted?&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let be that talk, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>for which we are now gathered together here.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It will not be difficult for the good \u0100nanda<br\/>to hear this talk later.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It were good if some dhamma-talk<br\/>belonging to his own teacher<br\/>were to occur to the revered \u0100nanda himself.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Well then, Sandaka, listen,<br\/>attend carefully<br\/>and I will speak.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, sir,&#8221; the wanderer Sandaka answered the venerable \u0100nanda in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The venerable \u0100nanda spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Sandaka, these four ways of living a non-Brahma-faring<br\/>have been pointed out<br\/>by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One;<br\/>and four comfortless Brahma-farings<br\/>have been pointed out<br\/>in which an intelligent man<br\/>could certainly not live a Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;And what, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>are these four ways of living a non-Brahma-faring<br\/>that have been pointed out<br\/>by the Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>in which <a id=\"pt515\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg515\"><span class=\"f2\">[515]<\/span><\/a>an intelligent man<br\/>could certainly not live a Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;As to this, Sandaka,<br\/>some teacher speaks thus<br\/>and is of this view:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;There is no (result of) gift,<br\/>no (result of) sacrifice;<br\/>there is no <a id=\"pg194\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[194]<\/b><\/span><\/a> fruit<br\/>or ripening of deeds<br\/>well done or ill done;<br\/>there is not this world,<br\/>there is not a world beyond;<br\/>there is not (benefit from serving) mother or father;<br\/>there are no beings of spontaneous uprising;<br\/>there are not in the world<br\/>recluses and brahmans who are faring rightly,<br\/>proceeding rightly,<br\/>and who proclaim this world<br\/>and a world beyond,<br\/>having realized them<br\/>by their own super-knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This man is derived<br\/>from the four great elements<br\/>so that, when he passes away,<br\/>the earthy part of his body<br\/>returns and relapses to earth,<br\/>the fluid part to water,<br\/>the hot part to heat,<br\/>the windy part to wind,<br\/>and his sense-organs pass over into the ether.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Four men,<br\/>with a bier as the fifth,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>go along taking the corpse;<br\/>as far as the cemetery<br\/>they make known his characteristics.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">His bones become pigeon-grey.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Offerings end as ashes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is imbeciles who speak of giving.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is vain,<br\/>lying,<br\/>empty talk<br\/>on their part<br\/>who profess to say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Fools and wise alike<br\/>are annihilated<br\/>and destroyed<br\/>at the breaking up of the body;<br\/>after dying they are not.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Wherefore, Sandaka, an intelligent man reflects thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This worthy teacher speaks thus<br\/>and is of this view:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;There is no (result of) herein<br\/>on an exact level in attaining recluseship,<br\/>although I do not say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;We will both be annihilated<br\/>and destroyed<br\/>at the breaking up of the body;<br\/>after dying we will not be.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is excessive of this good teacher<br\/>to be naked,<br\/>shaven,<br\/>to practise squatting on his heels,<br\/>to pluck out the hair of his head and beard,<br\/>while I am living in a house<br\/>surrounded and supported by sons,<br\/>delighting in K\u0101si&#8217;s sandal-wood perfumes,<br\/>decked with garlands,<br\/>scents<br\/>and unguents,<br\/>enjoying the use of gold and silver.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For in a future state<br\/>I will be on an exact level in wayfaring<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>as this good teacher.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Knowing what,<br\/>seeing what,<br\/>should I fare the Brahma-faring<br\/>under this teacher?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, realising that this is a way<br\/>of living a non-Brahma-faring,<br\/>goes away uninterested<br\/>in this Brahma-faring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, Sandaka, is the first way of living<br\/>a non-Brahma-faring<br\/>that <a id=\"pg195\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[195]<\/b><\/span><\/a> has been pointed out<br\/>by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>(a way) in which an intelligent man<br\/>could certainly not <a id=\"pt516\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg516\"><span class=\"f2\">[516]<\/span><\/a> live a Brahma-faring<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka,<br\/>some teacher here speaks thus<br\/>and is of this view:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;From doing, from making (another) do,<br\/>from mutilating,<br\/>from making (another) mutilate,<br\/>from threatening,<br\/>from making (another) threaten,<br\/>from causing grief,<br\/>from tormenting,<br\/>from torturing,<br\/>from making (another) torture,<br\/>from making onslaught on creatures,<br\/>from taking what is not given,<br\/>from house-breaking,<br\/>from plundering,<br\/>from robbery,<br\/>from waiting in ambush,<br\/>from going after other men&#8217;s wives,<br\/>from lying speech \u2014<br\/>from acting (thus) evil is not done.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If anyone with a discus having an edge sharp as a razor should make the creatures of this earth into one mass of flesh,<br\/>into one heap of flesh,<br\/>from that source there is not evil,<br\/>there is not the perpetuating of evil.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And if anyone should go to the south bank of the Ganges slaying and striking,<br\/>mutilating,<br\/>making (others) mutilate,<br\/>threatening,<br\/>making (others) threaten,<br\/>from that source there is not evil,<br\/>there is not the perpetuating of evil.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And if he should go to the north bank of the Ganges giving,<br\/>making (others) give,<br\/>offering,<br\/>making (others) offer,<br\/>from that both.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is excessive of this good teacher<br\/>to be naked,<br\/>shaven,<br\/>to practise squatting on his heels,<br\/>to pluck out the hair of his head and non-Brahma-faring<br\/>that has been pointed out<br\/>by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>(a way) in which an intelligent man<br\/>could certainly not live a Brahma-faring<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka, some teacher here speaks thus<br\/>and is of this view:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;There is no cause,<br\/>no reason for the defilement of creatures,<br\/>creatures are defiled without cause,<br\/>without reason.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is no cause,<br\/>no reason for the purification of creatures,<br\/>creatures are purified without cause,<br\/>without reason.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is not strength,<br\/>there is not energy,<br\/>there is not human vigour,<br\/>there is not human effort;<br\/>all creatures,<br\/>all breathing things,<br\/>all beings,<br\/>all living things<br\/>are without power,<br\/>without strength,<br\/>without energy,<br\/>bent by fate,<br\/>chance,<br\/>and nature,<br\/><a id=\"pt517\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg517\"><span class=\"f2\">[517]<\/span><\/a> they experience pleasure and pain<br\/>amid the six classes.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p heels,<br\/>to pluck out the hair of his head and beard,<br\/>while I am living in a house<br\/>surrounded and supported by sons,<br\/>delighting in K\u0101si&#8217;s sandal-wood perfumes,<br\/>decked with garlands,<br\/>scents<br\/>and unguents,<br\/>enjoying the use of gold and silver.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For in a future state<br\/>I will be on an exact level in wayfaring<br\/>as this good teacher.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Knowing what,<br\/>seeing what,<br\/>should I fare the Brahma-faring<br\/>under this teacher?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, Brahma-faring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, Sandaka, is the third way of living<br\/>a non-Brahma-faring<br\/>that has been pointed out<br\/>by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>(a way) in which an intelligent man<br\/>could certainly not live a Brahma-faring<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>water,<br\/>heat,<br\/>wind,<br\/>pleasures,<br\/>pains,<br\/>life-principles &#8211;<br\/>these seven.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These seven classes<br\/>are not made<br\/>or caused to be made,<br\/>they are not created<br\/>or caused to be created,<br\/>they are barren (of results),<br\/>standing stable as a mountain,<br\/>stable as a pillar,<br\/>they do not move<br\/>or change<br\/>or injure one another,<br\/>they are unable to affect one another&#8217;s pleasure<br\/>or pain<br\/>or pleasure-and-pain.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Herein there is neither slayer<br\/>nor one that makes another slay,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>neither hearer<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>nor one that makes another hear,<br\/>neither knower<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>nor one that makes another know.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even he who cuts off (another&#8217;s) head<br\/>with a sharp sword<br\/>deprives no one of life,<br\/>for the sword merely penetrates the gap<br\/>between the seven classes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are these fourteen hundred class=\"f4\">This is <a id=\"pg198\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[198]<\/b><\/span><\/a> not so.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Happiness and pain are measured out<br\/>(as) in a bushel;<br\/>circling on has its limits fixed;<br\/>there is not decline and growth,<br\/>there is not high degree or low.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn41\" href=\"#n41\">41<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p \u0100nanda,<br\/>what are these four comfortless Brahma-farings<br\/>that have been pointed out<br\/>by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>and in which an intelligent man<br\/>certainly could not live a Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living <a id=\"pg199\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[199]<\/b><\/span><\/a> it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;As to this, Sandaka,<br\/>some teacher,<br\/>all-knowing,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn43\" href=\"#n43\">43<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>all-seeing,<br\/>claims all-embracing knowledge-and-vision,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Whether I am walking<br\/>or standing still<br\/>or asleep<br\/>or awake,<br\/>knowledge-and-vision is constantly<br\/>and perpetually before me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He enters an empty place,<br\/>and he does not obtain almsfood,<br\/>and a dog bites him,<br\/>and he encounters a fierce elephant,<br\/>and he encounters a fierce horse,<br\/>and he encounters a fierce bullock,<br\/>and he asks a woman and a man their name and clan,<br\/>and he asks the name of a village<br\/>or a market town<br\/>and the way.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, being one who asks,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn44\" href=\"#n44\">44<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>&#8216;How was id=\"fn47\" href=\"#n47\">47<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a teacher, Sandaka, depends on report,<br\/>holds to report for his &#8216;truths,&#8217;<br\/>he remembers Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka, some teacher here<br\/>is a reasoner and investigator;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn48\" href=\"#n48\">48<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he teaches dhamma<br\/>on a system of his own devising,<br\/>beaten out by reasoning<br\/>and based on investigation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, Sandaka, a teacher is a reasoner and investigator,<br\/>part is well reasoned<br\/>and part is badly reasoned,<br\/>and is both right and wrong.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Wherefore, Sandaka, an intelligent person reflects thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This worthy teacher<br\/>is a reasoner and investigator<br\/>he teaches dhamma<br\/>on a system of his own devising,<br\/>beaten out by reasoning<br\/>and based on investigation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a teacher is a reasoner and investigator,<br\/>part is well reasoned<br\/>and part is badly reasoned,<br\/>and is both right and wrong.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having realized that this Brahma-faring is comfortless,<br\/>he goes away uninterested in this Brahma-faring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, Sandaka, is the third comfortless Brahma-faring<br\/>that has been pointed out<br\/>by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>and in which an intelligent man<br\/>certainly could not live a Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka, some teacher here<br\/>is stupid and confused;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn49\" href=\"#n49\">49<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>because of his stupidity and confusion,<br\/>on being asked a question on this or that<br\/><a id=\"pt521\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg521\"><span class=\"f2\">[521]<\/span><\/a> he falls into equivocation,<br\/>into eel-wriggling:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn50\" href=\"#n50\">50<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is not thus for me,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn51\" href=\"#n51\">51<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>it is not so for me,<br\/>it is not otherwise for me,<br\/>I do not say it is not,<br\/>I do not say it is not not.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Wherefore, Sandaka, an intelligent person reflects thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This worthy teacher is stupid and confused<br\/>because of his stupidity and confusion,<br\/>on being asked a question on this or that<br\/>he falls into equivocation,<br\/>into eel-wriggling:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is not thus for me,<br\/>it is not so for me,<br\/>it is not otherwise for me,<br\/>I do not say it is not,<br\/>I do not say it is not not.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having realized that this Brahma-faring is Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>and in which an intelligent man<br\/>certainly could not live a Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These, Sandaka, are the four comfortless Brahma-farings that have been pointed out by this Lord who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>and in which an intelligent man<br\/>certainly could not live a Brahma-faring,<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is wonderful, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>it is marvellous, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>that these four comfortless Brahma-farings<br\/>have been pointed out by this Lord<br\/>who knows and sees,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>as those in which an intelligent man<br\/>could certainly not live a Brahma-faring<br\/>or, if living it,<br\/>could not gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 ctr c\">\u00a7<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Good \u0100nanda,<br\/>what does this Teacher teach,<br\/>what does he profess<br\/>whereby an intelligent man<br\/><a id=\"pg201\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[201]<\/b><\/span><\/a> could certainly live a Brahma-faring<br\/>and, living it,<br\/>could gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;As to this, Sandaka, a Tath\u0101gata arises in the world,<br\/>a perfected one,<br\/>a fully Self-awakened one<br\/>endowed with right knowledge and conduct,<br\/>well-farer,<br\/>knower of the worlds,<br\/>the matchless charioteer of men to be tamed,<br\/>the Awakened One,<br\/>the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He makes known this world<br\/>with the devas,<br\/>with M\u0101ra,<br\/>with Brahm\u0101,<br\/>creation<br\/>with its recluses and brahmans,<br\/>its devas and men,<br\/>having realized them by his own super-knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He teaches <i>Dhamma<\/i> which is lovely at the beginning,<br\/>lovely in the middle,<br\/>lovely at the ending,<br\/>with the spirit and the letter;<br\/>he proclaims the Brahma-faring<br\/>wholly fulfilled,<br\/>quite purified.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A householder<br\/>or a householder&#8217;s son<br\/>or one born in another family<br\/>hears that <i>Dhamma<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having heard that <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>he gains faith in the <i>Tath\u0101gata<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Endowed with this faith<br\/>that he has acquired,<br\/>he reflects in this way:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The household life is confined and dusty;<br\/>going forth is of the open;<br\/>it is not easy for one who lives in a house<br\/>to fare the Brahma-faring<br\/>wholly fulfilled,<br\/>wholly pure,<br\/>polished like a conch-shell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose now that I,<br\/>having cut off hair and beard,<br\/>having put on saffron robes,<br\/>should go forth from home<br\/>into homelessness?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">After a time,<br\/>getting rid of his wealth,<br\/>be it small or great,<br\/>getting rid of his circle of relations,<br\/>be it small or great,<br\/>having cut off his hair and beard,<br\/>having put on saffron robes,<br\/>he goes forth from home<br\/>into homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, being thus one who has gone forth<br\/>and who is endowed with the training<br\/>and the way of living of monks,<br\/>abandoning onslaught on creatures,<br\/>is one who abstains from onslaught on creatures;<br\/>the stick laid aside,<br\/>the knife laid aside,<br\/>he lives kindly,<br\/>scrupulous,<br\/>friendly<br\/>and compassionate<br\/>towards all breathing things and creatures.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Abandoning the taking of what is not given,<br\/>he is one who abstains from taking what is not given;<br\/>being one who takes (only) what is given,<br\/>who waits for what is given,<br\/>not by stealing he lives with a self become pure.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Abandoning unchastity,<br\/>he is one who is chaste,<br\/>keeping remote (from unchastity),<br\/>abstaining from dealings with women.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Abandoning lying speech,<br\/>he is one who abstains from lying speech,<br\/>a truth-speaker,<br\/>a bondsman to truth,<br\/>trustworthy,<br\/>dependable,<br\/>no deceiver of the world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Abandoning slanderous speech,<br\/>he is one who abstains from slanderous speech;<br\/>having heard something here<br\/>he is not one for repeating it elsewhere<br\/>for (causing) variance among these (people),<br\/>or having heard something elsewhere<br\/>he is not one to repeat it there<br\/>for (causing) variance among these (people).<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In this way<br\/>he is a reconciler of those who are at variance,<br\/>and one who combines those who are friends.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Concord is his pleasure,<br\/>concord his delight,<br\/>concord his joy,<br\/>concord is the motive of his speech.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Abandoning harsh speech,<br\/>he is one who abstains from harsh speech.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever speech is gentle,<br\/>pleasing to the ear,<br\/>affectionate,<br\/>going to the heart,<br\/>urbane,<br\/>pleasant to the manyfolk,<br\/>agreeable to the manyfolk &#8211;<br\/>he comes to be one who utters speech like this.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Abandoning frivolous chatter,<br\/>he is one who abstains from frivolous chatter.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is a speaker at a right time,<br\/>a speaker of fact,<br\/>a speaker on the goal,<br\/>a speaker on <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>a speaker on discipline,<br\/>he speaks words that are worth treasuring,<br\/>with similes at a right time<br\/>that are discriminating,<br\/>connected with the goal.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from what involves destruction to seed-growth,<br\/>to vegetable growth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who eats one meal a day,<br\/>refraining at night,<br\/>abstaining from eating at a wrong time.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from watching shows of dancing,<br\/>singing,<br\/>music.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from using garlands,<br\/>scents,<br\/>unguents,<br\/>adornments,<br\/>finery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from using high beds,<br\/>large beds.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting gold and silver.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting raw grain.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting raw meat.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting women and girls.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting women slaves and men slaves.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting goats and sheep.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting fowl and swine.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting elephants, cows, horses, mares.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting fields and sites.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting messages or going on such.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains from buying and selling.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting from cheating with weights.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from accepting from cheating with bronzes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from cheating with measures.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from the crooked ways of bribery, fraud and deceit.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be one who abstains<br\/>from maiming, murdering, manacling, highway robbery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comes to be contented<br\/>with the robes for protecting his body,<br\/>with the almsfood for sustaining his stomach.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Wherever he goes<br\/>he takes these things with him as he goes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As a bird on the wing<br\/>wherever it flies<br\/>takes its&#8217; wings with it as it flies,<br\/>so a monk,<br\/>contented with the robes for protecting his body,<br\/>with the almsfood for sustaining his stomach,<br\/>wherever he goes<br\/>takes these things with him as he goes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, possessed of the ariyan body of moral habit,<br\/>subjectively experiences unsullied well-being.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having seen a material shape with the eye,<br\/>he is not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>he is not entranced by the detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he dwells with this organ of sight uncontrolled,<br\/>covetousness and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he fares along controlling it;<br\/>he guards the organ of sight,<br\/>he comes to control over the organ of sight.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having heard a sound with the ear,<br\/>he is not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>he is not entranced by the detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he dwells with this organ of hearing uncontrolled,<br\/>covetousness and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he fares along controlling it;<br\/>he guards the organ of hearing,<br\/>he comes to control over the organ of hearing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having smelt a smell with the nose,<br\/>he is not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>he is not entranced by the detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he dwells with this organ of smell uncontrolled,<br\/>covetousness and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he fares along controlling it;<br\/>he guards the organ of smell,<br\/>he comes to control over the organ of smell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having savoured a taste with the tongue,<br\/>he is not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>he is not entranced by the detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he dwells with this organ of taste uncontrolled,<br\/>covetousness and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he fares along controlling it;<br\/>he guards the organ of taste,<br\/>he comes to control over the organ of taste.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having felt a touch with the body,<br\/>he is not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>he is not entranced by the detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he dwells with this organ of touch uncontrolled,<br\/>covetousness and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind,<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he fares along controlling it;<br\/>he guards the organ of touch,<br\/>he comes to control over the organ of touch.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having cognised a mental object with the mind,<br\/>he is not entranced by the general appearance,<br\/>he is not entranced by the detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he lives with this organ of mind uncontrolled,<br\/>covetousness and dejection,<br\/>evil unskilled states of mind<br\/>might predominate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he fares along controlling it;<br\/>he guards the organ of mind,<br\/>he comes to control over the organ of mind.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he is possessed of this ariyan control of the (sense-) organs,<br\/>he subjectively experiences unsullied well-being.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whether he is setting out<br\/>or returning,<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly;<br\/>whether he is looking down<br\/>or looking round,<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly;<br\/>whether he is bending back<br\/>or stretching out (his arm),<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly;<br\/>whether he is carrying his outer cloak,<br\/>his bowl,<br\/>his robe,<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly;<br\/>whether he is munching,<br\/>drinking,<br\/>eating,<br\/>savouring,<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly;<br\/>whether he is obeying the calls of nature,<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly;<br\/>whether he is walking,<br\/>standing,<br\/>asleep,<br\/>awake,<br\/>talking,<br\/>silent,<br\/>he is one who comports himself properly.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Possessed of this ariyan body of moral habit<br\/>and possessed of this ariyan control of the (sense-) organs<br\/>and possessed of this ariyan mindfulness<br\/>and clear consciousness,<br\/>he chooses a remote lodging in a forest,<br\/>at the root of a tree,<br\/>on a mountain slope,<br\/>in a wilderness,<br\/>in a hill-cave,<br\/>in a cemetery,<br\/>in a forest haunt,<br\/>in the open<br\/>or on a heap of straw.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, returning from alms-gathering<br\/>after his meal,<br\/>sits down cross-legged<br\/>holding the back erect,<br\/>having made mindfulness<br\/>rise up in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, having got rid of covetousness for the world,<br\/>lives with a mind devoid of coveting,<br\/>he purifies the mind of coveting.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of the taint of ill-will,<br\/>he lives benevolent in mind;<br\/>and compassionate for the welfare<br\/>of all creatures and beings,<br\/>he purifies the mind of the taint of ill-will.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of sloth and torpor,<br\/>he lives devoid of sloth and torpor;<br\/>perceiving the light,<br\/>mindful and clearly conscious,<br\/>he purifies the mind of sloth and torpor.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of restlessness and worry,<br\/>he lives calmly,<br\/>the mind subjectively tranquillised,<br\/>he purifies the mind of restlessness and worry.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">By getting rid of doubt,<br\/>he lives doubt-crossed;<br\/>unperplexed as to the wisdom &#8211; <br\/>aloof from pleasure of the senses,<br\/>aloof from unskilled states of mind,<br\/>enters and abides in the first meditation,<br\/>which is accompanied by initial thought and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of aloofness<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a disciple attains such lofty eminence under this Teacher,<br\/><a id=\"pt522\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg522\"><span class=\"f2\">[522]<\/span><\/a> an intelligent person could certainly live that Brahma-faring and,<br\/>living it,<br\/>could gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka, a monk,<br\/>by allaying initial and discursive thought,<br\/>his mind subjectively tranquillised<br\/>and fixed on one point,<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the second meditation<br\/>which is devoid of initial and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of concentration<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a disciple attains such lofty eminence under this Teacher,<br\/>an intelligent person could certainly live that Brahma-faring and,<br\/>living it,<br\/>could gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka, a monk,<br\/>by the fading out of rapture,<br\/>dwells with equanimity,<br\/>attentive and clearly conscious,<br\/>and experiences in his person<br\/>that joy of which the ariyans say:<br\/>&#8216;Joyful lives he who has equanimity and is mindful,&#8217;<br\/>and he enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the third meditation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a disciple attains such lofty eminence under this Teacher,<br\/>an intelligent person could certainly live that Brahma-faring and,<br\/>living it,<br\/>could gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, Sandaka, a monk<br\/>by getting rid of joy,<br\/>by getting rid of anguish,<br\/>by the going down of his former pleasures and sorrows,<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the fourth meditation<br\/>which has neither anguish nor joy,<br\/>and which is entirely purified<br\/>by equanimity and mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a disciple attains such lofty eminence under this Teacher,<br\/>an intelligent person could certainly live that Brahma-faring and,<br\/>living it,<br\/>could gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus with the mind composed,<br\/>quite purified,<br\/>quite clarified,<br\/>without blemish,<br\/>without defilement,<br\/>grown soft and workable,<br\/>stable,<br\/>immovable,<br\/>he directs his mind<br\/>to the knowledge and recollection of former habitations.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He recollects a variety of former habitations, thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One birth,<br\/>two births,<br\/>three births,<br\/>four births,<br\/>five births,<br\/>ten births,<br\/>twenty births,<br\/>thirty births,<br\/>forty births,<br\/>fifty births,<br\/>a hundred births,<br\/>a thousand births,<br\/>a hundred thousand births,<br\/>and many an eon of integration<br\/>and many an eon of disintegration<br\/>and many an eon of integration-disintegration:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Such a one was I by name,<br\/>having such and such a clan,<br\/>such and such a colour,<br\/>so I was nourished,<br\/>such and such pleasant and painful experiences were mine,<br\/>so did the span of life end.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Passing from this,<br\/>I came to be in another state<br\/>where I was such a one by name,<br\/>having such and such a clan,<br\/>such and such a colour,<br\/>so I was nourished,<br\/>such and such pleasant and painful experiences were mine,<br\/>so did the span of life end.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Passing from this,<br\/>I arose here.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus he recollects divers former habitations<br\/>in all their modes and detail.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">With the mind composed thus,<br\/>quite purified,<br\/>quite clarified,<br\/>without blemish,<br\/>without defilement,<br\/>grown soft and workable,<br\/>stable,<br\/>immovable,<br\/>he directs his mind<br\/>to the knowledge of the passing hence<br\/>and the arising of beings.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">With the purified <i>deva<\/i>-vision<br\/>surpassing that of men,<br\/>he sees beings as they pass hence<br\/>or come to be;<br\/>he comprehends that beings are mean,<br\/>excellent,<br\/>comely,<br\/>ugly,<br\/>well-going,<br\/>ill-going,<br\/>according to the consequences of deeds,<br\/>and thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Indeed these worthy beings<br\/>who were possessed of wrong conduct in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>scoffers at the ariyans,<br\/>holding a wrong view,<br\/>incurring deeds consequent on a wrong view &#8211;<br\/>these, at the breaking up of the body after dying,<br\/>have arisen in a sorrowful state,<br\/>a bad bourn,<br\/>the abyss,<br\/>Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But these worthy beings<br\/>who were possessed of good conduct in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>who did not scoff at the ariyans,<br\/>holding a right view,<br\/>incurring deeds consequent on a right view &#8211;<br\/>these at the breaking up of the body after dying,<br\/>have arisen in a good bourn,<br\/>a heaven world.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus with the purified <i>deva<\/i>-vision<br\/>surpassing that of men<br\/>does he see beings as they pass hence,<br\/>as they arise;<br\/>he is:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This is anguish&#8217;,<br\/>&#8216;this is the arising of anguish&#8217;,<br\/>&#8216;this is the stopping of anguish&#8217;,<br\/>&#8216;this is the course leading to the stopping of anguish&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He comprehends as it really is:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;These are the cankers&#8217;,<br\/>&#8216;this is the arising of the cankers&#8217;,<br\/>&#8216;this is the stopping of the cankers&#8217;,<br\/>&#8216;this is the course leading to the stopping of the cankers&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Knowing thus,<br\/>seeing thus,<br\/>his mind is freed from the canker of sense-pleasures<br\/>and his mind is freed from the canker of becoming<br\/>and his mind is freed from the canker of ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In freedom the knowledge comes to be:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I am freed&#8217;;<br\/>and he comprehends:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Destroyed is birth,<br\/>brought to a close the Brahma-faring,<br\/>done is what was to be done,<br\/>there is no more of being such or so.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a disciple attains such lofty eminence under this Teacher,<br\/>an intelligent person could certainly live that Brahma-faring and,<br\/>living it,<br\/>could gain success in the right path,<br\/>in dhamma,<br\/>in what is skilled.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>could that monk who is a perfected one,<br\/>the cankers destroyed,<br\/>who has lived the life,<br\/>done what was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>attained his own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming utterly destroyed,<br\/>freed by perfect profound knowledge &#8211;<br\/><a id=\"pt523\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg523\"><span class=\"f2\">[523]<\/span><\/a> could he enjoy pleasures of the senses?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Whatever monk, Sandaka, is a perfected one<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn52\" href=\"#n52\">52<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> . ,<br\/>the cankers destroyed,<br\/>who has lived the life,<br\/>done what was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>attained his own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming utterly destroyed,<br\/>freed by perfect profound knowledge &#8211;<br\/>he cannot become one to transgress<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn53\" href=\"#n53\">53<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>five points:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn54\" href=\"#n54\">54<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">a monk whose cankers are destroyed<br\/>cannot become one<br\/>intentionally to deprive a living creature of life<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">a monk whose cankers are destroyed<br\/>cannot become one<br\/>to take what has not been given,<br\/>as it were by theft<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">a monk whose cankers are destroyed<br\/>cannot become one<br\/>to indulge in sexual intercourse<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">a monk whose cankers are destroyed<br\/>cannot become one<br\/>to speak a deliberate lie<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">a monk whose cankers are destroyed<br\/>cannot become one<br\/>to enjoy pleasures of the senses<br\/>in <a id=\"pg202\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[202]<\/b><\/span><\/a> regard to what was stored<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn55\" href=\"#n55\">55<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>as he did formerly<br\/>when in the household state.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sandaka, whatever is a perfected one<br\/>the cankers destroyed,<br\/>who has lived the life,<br\/>done what was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>attained his own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming utterly destroyed,<br\/>freed by perfect profound knowledge &#8211;<br\/>he cannot become one to transgress<br\/>these five points.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>if a monk is one perfected<br\/>the cankers destroyed,<br\/>who has lived the life,<br\/>done what was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>attained his own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming utterly destroyed,<br\/>freed by perfect profound knowledge &#8211;<br\/>then, whether he is walking<br\/>or standing still<br\/>or asleep<br\/>or awake<br\/>is the knowledge-and-vision constantly<br\/>and perpetually present<br\/>that his cankers are destroyed?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Well then, Sandaka, I will make you a simile,<br\/>for by a simile some intelligent persons here<br\/>understand the meaning of what has been said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sandaka, it is like a man<br\/>whose hands and feet have been cut off;<br\/>whether he is walking<br\/>or standing still<br\/>or asleep<br\/>or awake,<br\/>constantly and perpetually<br\/>are his hands and feet<br\/>as though cut off;<br\/>and moreover<br\/>while he is reflecting on it,<br\/>he knows:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;My hands and feet have been cut off.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even so, Sandaka,<br\/>whatever monk is a perfected one,<br\/>the cankers destroyed,<br\/>who has lived the life,<br\/>done what was to be done,<br\/>laid down the burden,<br\/>attained his own goal,<br\/>the fetters of becoming utterly destroyed,<br\/>freed by perfect profound knowledge,<br\/>for him<br\/>whether he is walking<br\/>or standing still<br\/>or asleep<br\/>or awake,<br\/>the cankers are as though destroyed;<br\/>and moreover<br\/>while he is reflecting on it,<br\/>he knows:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;My cankers are destroyed.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How many great leaders,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn56\" href=\"#n56\">56<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> good \u0100nanda,<br\/>are there in this dhamma and discipline?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Not merely a hundred,<br\/>nor two,<br\/>three,<br\/>four<br\/>or five hundred,<br\/>but far more are those<br\/>who are great leaders<br\/>in this dhamma and discipline.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Wonderful, good \u0100nanda,<br\/>marvellous, good \u0100nanda;<br\/>there can be no extolling of their own <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>nor disparaging of the <i>Dhamma<\/i> of others;<br\/>but both the teaching of <i>Dhamma<\/i> in its (whole) extent<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn57\" href=\"#n57\">57<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and so <a id=\"pt524\" href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/pali\/mn\/mn.076.pali.bd.htm#pg524\"><span class=\"f2\">[524]<\/span><\/a> many great leaders can be seen.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On the other hand,<br\/>these Naked Ascetics<br\/>are children of a childless mother,<br\/>they both extol themselves<br\/>and disparage others,<br\/>and they show only three great leaders,<br\/>namely Nanda Vaccha, Kisa Sa\u1e45kicca and Makkhali Gos\u0101la&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn58\" href=\"#n58\">58<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the wanderer Sandaka addressed his own company, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let the good sirs fare forth;<br\/>the living of the Brahma-faring<br\/>is <a id=\"pg203\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[203]<\/b><\/span><\/a> under the recluse Gotama,<br\/>although it is not easy for us now<br\/>to give up gains,<br\/>honours,<br\/>fame.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was in this way<br\/>that the wanderer Sandaka<br\/>sent his own company<br\/>into the Lord&#8217;s
