id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> the Lord was walking on tour among the Kosalans<br\/>together with a large Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord, turning aside from the road,<br\/>smiled (when he came to a) certain place.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the venerable \u0100nanda:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What is the cause,<br\/>what the reason<br\/>that the Lord is smiling?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not without motive<br\/>do Tath\u0101gatas smile.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda,<br\/>having arranged his robe over one shoulder,<br\/>having saluted the Lord with joined palms,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Now, revered sir, what is the cause,<br\/>what the reason<br\/>that the Lord is smiling?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not without motive<br\/>do Tath\u0101gatas smile.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Once upon a time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>in this district<br\/>there was a village township called Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga,<br\/>prosperous and wealthy<br\/>and crowded with people.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda, the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>lived depending on the village township of Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga,.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At that time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the monastery of the Lord Kassapa<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> was here.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At that time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>instructed an Order of monks while he was seated here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda, having laid down an outer cloak folded into four,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Well then, revered sir,<br\/>let the Lord sit down.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This self-same piece of ground<br\/>will (then) have been made use of<br\/>by two perfected ones,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened Ones.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord sat down on the appointed seat.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was seated<br\/>the Lord spoke thus to the venerable \u0100nanda:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Once upon a time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>in this district<br\/>there was a village township called Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga,<br\/>prosperous and wealthy<br\/>and crowded with people.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>lived depending on the village township of Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga,.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At that time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the monastery of the Lord Kassapa was here.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At that time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>instructed an Order of monks while he was seated here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda,<br\/>in the village township of Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga,<br\/>the potter named Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra was a supporter &#8211;<br\/>the chief supporter &#8211;<br\/>of the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda,<br\/>a brahman youth named <a id=\"pg244\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[244]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Jotip\u0101la<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> was a friend &#8211;<br\/>a dear friend &#8211;<br\/>of the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra addressed the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Let us go, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>we will approach the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>so as to see him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la spoke thus<br\/>to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>but of what use is it<br\/>to see this little shaveling recluse?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra addressed the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Let us go, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>we will approach the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>so as to see him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la spoke thus<br\/>to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>but of what use is it<br\/>to see this little shaveling recluse?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a third time, \u0100nanda, did Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter<br\/>speak thus to the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Let us go, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>we will approach the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>so as to see him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la spoke thus<br\/>to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>but of what use is it<br\/>to see this little shaveling recluse?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Well then, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>taking a back-scratcher and bath-powder,<br\/>we will go to the river to bathe.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">\u0100nanda, the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la<br\/>answered the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra in assent, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216; Yes, dear.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>and the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>taking a back-scratcher and bath-powder,<br\/>went to the river to bathe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra spoke thus<br\/>to the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>is near the monastery<br\/>of the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let us go, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>we will approach the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>so as to see him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la spoke thus<br\/>to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>but of what use is it<br\/>to see this little shaveling recluse?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a third time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>did Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter speak thus<br\/>to the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>is near the monastery<br\/>of the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a third time, \u0100nanda,<br\/>did the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la speak thus<br\/>to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>but of what use is it<br\/>to see this Httle shaveling recluse?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>having laid hold of the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la by the waist-band,<br\/>spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This, dear <a id=\"pg245\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[245]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>is near the monastery<br\/>of the Lord Kassapa.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let us go, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>we will approach the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>so as to see him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>having disengaged his waist-band,<br\/>spoke thus to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>but of what use is it<br\/>to see this little shaveling recluse?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>having laid hold of the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la by the hair &#8211;<br\/>he had just performed an ablution of his head &#8211;<br\/>spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>is near the monastery<br\/>of the Lord Kassapa.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let us go, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>we will approach the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>so as to see him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, it occurred to the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Indeed it is wonderful,<br\/>indeed it is marvellous,<br\/>that this potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>being of lowly birth,<br\/>should lay hold of my hair<br\/>although I have performed an ablution of my head,&#8217;<br\/>and thinking:<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a id=\"edfn1\" href=\"#edn1\">ed1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Indeed this<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> surely cannot be insignificant.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">he spoke thus to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Is it really necessary,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is really necessary, dear Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>most surely a sight of this Lord, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>would be greatly prized by me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Well then, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>let go (of my hair);<br\/>we will get along.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>and the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la<br\/>approached the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When they had approached,<br\/>Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter greeted the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>and sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la exchanged greetings with the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>and having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda,<br\/>as the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>he spoke thus to the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Revered sir, this brahman youth Jotip\u0101la is my friend &#8211;<br\/>my dear friend.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let the Lord teach him <i>Dhamma<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>gladdened,<br\/>roused,<br\/>incited,<br\/>delighted the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>and the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>with talk on <i>dham-<\/i> <a id=\"pg246\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[246]<\/b><\/span><\/a> <i>ma.<\/i><span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>and the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la,<br\/>gladdened,<br\/>roused,<br\/>incited,<br\/>delighted by the Lord Kassapa&#8217;s talk on <i>Dhamma,<\/i><br\/>having rejoiced in what the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One, had said,<br\/>having given thanks<br\/>and risen from their seats,<br\/>greeting the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>they departed keeping their right sides towards him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la spoke thus<br\/>to the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;How is it that you, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>on hearing this dhamma,<br\/>do not go forth from home into homelessness?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;But, dear Jotipala, do you not know<br\/>that I look after my blind and ageing parents?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Well then, dear Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra,<br\/>I will go forth from home into homelessness.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>and the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la<br\/>approached the Lord Kassapa;<br\/>having approached and having greeted the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda, as Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter<br\/>was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>he spoke thus to the Lord Kassapa:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Revered sir, this brahman youth Jotip\u0101la is my friend &#8211;<br\/>my dear friend.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">May the Lord let him go forth.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">\u0100nanda, Jotip\u0101la the brahman youth<br\/>received the going forth<br\/>in the presence of the Lord Kassapa,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>he received the ordination.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, not long after the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la had received ordination &#8211;<br\/>half a month after his ordination &#8211;<br\/>the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>having stayed at Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga, for as long as he found suitable,<br\/>set out on tour for Benares;<br\/>walking on tour,<br\/>in due course he arrived at Benares.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the Lord Kassapa, stayed near Benares<br\/>at Isipatana in the deer-park.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">\u0100nanda, Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>heard that the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>had arrived at Benares<br\/>and was staying near Benares at Isipatana in the deer-park.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>having had many lovely vehicles harnessed,<br\/>having mounted a lovely vehicle,<br\/>set off for Benares with the many lovely vehicles<br\/>and with great royal pomp<br\/>so as to see the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For as long as the ground was possible for a vehicle<br\/>he went in the vehicle,<br\/>then having dismounted from it,<br\/>he approached the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One, on foot;<br\/>having approached<br\/>and having greeted the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">\u0100nanda, as Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>roused,<br\/>incited,<br\/>gladdened <a id=\"pg247\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[247]<\/b><\/span><\/a><br\/>and delighted him with talk on dhamma.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, class=\"f4\">&#8216;Revered sir, may the Lord consent to a meal with me on the morrow<br\/>together with the Order of monks.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">\u0100nanda, the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>consented by becoming silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, Kik\u012b the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>having understood the Lord Kassapa&#8217;s consent,<br\/>rising from his seat<br\/>and greeting the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>departed keeping his right side towards him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, towards the end of that night when Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>had had sumptuous foods,<br\/>solid and soft,<br\/>prepared in his own dwelling:<br\/>dry yellow rices,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>various curries,<br\/>the black grains removed,<br\/>and various condiments,<br\/>he had the time announced to the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is time, revered sir,<br\/>the meal is ready.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>having dressed in the morning,<br\/>taking his bowl and robe,<br\/>approached the dwelling of Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he sat down on the appointed seat<br\/>together with the Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>with his own hand served and satisfied<br\/>with sumptuous foods,<br\/>solid and soft,<br\/>the Order of monks<br\/>with the Awakened One at its head.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, when the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>had eaten and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl,<br\/>Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si, taking a low seat,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Revered sir, may the Lord consent to (accept)<br\/>my rains-residence in Benares;<br\/>there will be suitable support for the Order.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;No, sire, I have (already) consented<br\/>to (accept) a rains-residence.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Revered sir, may the Lord consent<br\/>to (accept) my rains-residence in Benares;<br\/>there will be suitable support for the Order.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;No, sire, I have (already) consented<br\/>to (accept) a rains-residence.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a third time, \u0100nanda, did Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>speak thus to the Lord Kassapa:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Revered sir, may the Lord consent<br\/>to (accept) my rains-residence in Benares;<br\/>there will be suitable support for the Order.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;No, sire, I have (already) consented<br\/>to (accept) a rains-residence.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si thought:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;The Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One does not consent<br\/>to (accept) my rains-residence in Benares,&#8217;<br\/>and he was depressed and grieved.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Then, have you, revered sir,<br\/>some other supporter than me?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;There is, sire, a village township called Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga,.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is a <a id=\"pg248\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[248]<\/b><\/span><\/a> potter there called Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra;<br\/>he is my supporter &#8211;<br\/>the chief supporter.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But you, sire, think:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One, does not consent<br\/>to (accept) my rains-residence in Benares,<br\/>and you are depressed and grieved.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This is not so with the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>and nor can it be so.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For, sire, the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra has gone to the Awakened One for refuge,<br\/>he has gone to dhamma for refuge,<br\/>he has gone to the Order for refuge.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra, the potter, sire,<br\/>is restrained from onslaught on creatures,<br\/>restrained from taking what has not been given,<br\/>restrained from wrong enjoyment of sense-pleasures,<br\/>restrained from lying speech,<br\/>restrained from occasions of sloth<br\/>engendered by strong drink and spirits.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire,<br\/>is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Awakened One<br\/>unwavering confidence in dhamma<br\/>unwavering confidence the Order,<br\/>he is possessed of moral habits<br\/>that are dear to the ariyans.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire, doubts not about anguish<br\/>he doubts not about the uprising of anguish<br\/>he doubts not about the stopping of anguish,<br\/>he doubts not about the course leading to the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire, is a one-meal-man,<br\/>a Brahma-farer,<br\/>virtuous,<br\/>lovely in character.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire,<br\/>is one who has laid aside jewels and wrought gold,<br\/>who is without gold and silver.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire,<br\/>does not dig the earth either with a spade<br\/>or with his own hand;<br\/>willingly he makes a vessel<br\/>from the soil of a bank<br\/>that is crumbling<br\/>or scratched out by rats and dogs,<br\/>and he speaks thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;He that likes,<br\/>if he lays down fragments of husked rice here,<br\/>fragments of kidney-beans,<br\/>fragments of chick-peas,<br\/>may take whatever he likes.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire,<br\/>looks after his blind ageing parents.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter, sire,<br\/>by the destruction of the five fetters binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>he attains final nibb\u0101na there,<br\/>he is not liable to return from that world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At one time I, sire,<br\/>was staying in the village township of Vebha\u1e37i\u1e45ga.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, sire, it occurred to Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Indeed it is a gain for me,<br\/>indeed it is well gotten by me<br\/>that the Lord Kassapa,<br\/>has such trust in me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, sire,<br\/>joy and happiness did not leave Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter<br\/>for half a month<br\/>or his class=\"f4\">&#8220;Go, monks, and find out if there is grass<br\/>in the dwelling of Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, sire,<br\/>the monks spoke thus to me:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;There is no grass, revered sir,<br\/>in the dwelling of Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter,<br\/>but his house has a grass roof.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Go, monks, and strip the grass<br\/>from the house of Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, class=\"f4\">&#8220;Sister,&#8217; the monks said,<br\/>&#8220;the Lord Kassapa&#8217;s hut is leaking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Take it, revered sirs,<br\/>take it, my One,<br\/>is leaking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, sire, it occurred to Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Indeed it is a gain for me,<br\/>indeed it is well gotten by me<br\/>that the Lord Kassapa, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>has such trust in me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, sire,<br\/>joy and happiness did not leave the potter Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra<br\/>for half a month<br\/>or his parents for seven days.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, sire,<br\/>for a whole three months<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that house stood with its roof open to the sky,<br\/>but it did not rain into it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Such a one, sire, is Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is a gain, revered sir,<br\/>it is well gotten, revered sir,<br\/>by Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter<br\/>in whom the Lord has such trust.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, Kik\u012b, the king of K\u0101si,<br\/>sent as many as five hundred cartloads<br\/>of husked rice to Gha\u1e6d\u012bk\u0101ra the potter,<br\/>dry yellow rices<br\/>and suitable curries.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p them, revered sir.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The king is very busy, there is much to be done.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I am quite satisfied<br\/>since this is for me from the king.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It may be, \u0100nanda, that this will occur to you:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now, at that time<br\/>the brahman youth Jotip\u0101la<br\/>was someone else.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this, \u0100nanda, should not be thought of in this way.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I, at that time,<br\/>was
