id=\"pg268\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[268]<\/b><\/span><\/a> came to a) certain place.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the venerable \u0100nanda:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What is the cause,<br\/>what the reason<br\/>that the Lord is smiling?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not without motive<br\/>do Tath\u0101gatas smile.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable \u0100nanda,<br\/>having arranged his robe over one shoulder,<br\/>having saluted the Lord with joined palms,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Now, revered sir, what is the cause,<br\/>what the reason<br\/>that the Lord is smiling?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not without motive<br\/>do <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>among brahmans and householders,<br\/>townsfolk and countryfolk,<br\/>and who observed the Observance<br\/>on the fourteenth,<br\/>fifteenth<br\/>and eighth days<br\/>of the half-month.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, at the end of many years,<br\/>many hundreds of sire.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, at the end of many years,<br\/>many hundreds of years,<br\/>many thousands of years,<br\/>the barber saw grey hairs growing<br\/>on King Makh\u0101deva&#8217;s head.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Seeing that, \u0100nanda,<br\/>he spoke thus to King Makh\u0101deva:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Death&#8217;s messengers<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> have appeared to his majesty;<br\/>grey hairs are to be seen growing on his head.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Well then, good barber,<br\/>when you have pulled out those grey hairs properly with the tweezers,<br\/>place them on my fingers.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, your majesty.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And when, \u0100nanda, the barber had answered King Makh\u0101deva in assent,<br\/>he pulled out the grey hairs properly with the tweezers<br\/>and placed them on King Makh\u0101deva&#8217;s fingers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda, King Makh\u0101deva,<br\/>having given the boon of a village to the said:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Come you, good M\u0101tali,<br\/>having harnessed a chariot with a thousand thoroughbreds,<br\/>and having approached King Nimi,<br\/>speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This chariot,<br\/>harnessed with a thousand thoroughbreds,<br\/>has been sent to you by Sakka, the lord of <i>devas<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sire, you should mount the <i>deva<\/i>-like vehicle without hesitation.&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;So be it, your honour.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda, M\u0101tali the charioteer,<br\/>having answered Sakka, the lord of devas, in assent,<br\/>having harnessed a chariot with a thousand thoroughbreds<br\/>and having id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>that by which evil deeds<br\/>undergo the ripening of evil deeds<br\/>or that by which lovely deeds<br\/>undergo the ripening of lovely class=\"f4\">So, \u0100nanda, the charioteer M\u0101tali<br\/>brought King Nimi<br\/>to the Sudhamm\u0101 debating hall.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda, Sakka, the lord of devas,<br\/>saw King Nimi approaching from the distance;<br\/>seeing him,<br\/>he spoke to King Nimi:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Come, sire,<br\/>you are welcome, brahmans and householders,<br\/>townsfolk and countryfolk,<br\/>and he observed the Observance<br\/>on the fourteenth,<br\/>fifteenth<br\/>and eighth days<br\/>of the half-month.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, at the end of many years,<br\/>many hundreds of years,<br\/>many thousands of years,<br\/>King Nimi addressed his barber,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;When, good barber,<br\/>you see grey hairs growing on my head,<br\/>then you may tell me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">\u0100nanda, the barber answered King Nimi in assent,<br\/>saying,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, sire.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, \u0100nanda, at the end of many years,<br\/>many hundreds of years,<br\/>many thousands of years,<br\/>the barber saw grey hairs growing<br\/>on King Nimi&#8217;s head.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Seeing that, \u0100nanda,<br\/>he spoke thus to King King Nimi:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Death&#8217;s messengers have appeared to his majesty;<br\/>grey hairs are to be seen growing on his head.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p tweezers<br\/>and placed them on King Nimi&#8217;s fingers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, \u0100nanda, King Nimi,<br\/>having given the boon of a village to the barber,<br\/>had the prince who was his eldest son summoned<br\/>and spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Dear Prince,<br\/>Death&#8217;s messengers have appeared to me;<br\/>grey hairs are to be seen growing on my head.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Human sense-pleasures have been enjoyed by me;<br\/>it is now time to seek deva-like sense-pleasures.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Come you, dear Prince,<br\/>rule this kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For I, having cut off my hair and beard,<br\/>having donned saffron garments,<br\/>will go forth from home<br\/>into homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And now, dear Prince,<br\/>when you too see grey hairs growing on your head,<br\/>then, having given the boon of a village to the barber,<br\/>having suffused the whole world<br\/>everywhere,<br\/>in every way,<br\/>with a mind of friendliness<br\/>that was far-reaching,<br\/>wide-spread,<br\/>immeasurable,<br\/>without enmity,<br\/>without malevolence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He dwelt, having suffused the first quarter with a mind of compassion,<br\/>likewise the second,<br\/>likewise the third,<br\/>likewise the fourth;<br\/>just so above,<br\/>below,<br\/>across;<br\/>he dwelt having suffused the whole world<br\/>everywhere,<br\/>in every way,<br\/>with a far-reaching,<br\/>wide-spread,<br\/>immeasurable,<br\/>without enmity,<br\/>without malevolence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He dwelt, having suffused the first quarter with a mind of equanimity,<br\/>likewise the second,<br\/>likewise the third,<br\/>likewise the fourth;<br\/>just so above,<br\/>below,<br\/>across;<br\/>he dwelt having suffused the whole world<br\/>everywhere,<br\/>in every way,<br\/>with a mind of equanimity<br\/>that was far-reaching,<br\/>wide-spread,<br\/>immeasurable,<br\/>without enmity,<br\/>without malevolence.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, \u0100nanda, King Nimi<br\/>had played at boys&#8217; sports<br\/>for 84,000 years,<br\/>had ruled as a viceroy<br\/>for 84,000 years,<br\/>and had ruled as a king<br\/>for 84,000 years;<br\/>for 84,000 years,<br\/>gone forth from home into homelessness<br\/>in this very Makh\u0101deva Mango Grove,<br\/>he fared the Brahma-faring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, having developed the four Brahma-abidings,<br\/>was one who at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>reached the Brahma-world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, \u0100nanda, King Nimi&#8217;s son was called Ka\u1e37\u0101rajanaka.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He did not go forth from home<br\/>into homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He broke that lovely custom;<br\/>of those (who observed it)<br\/>he was the last man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It may be that this occurs to you, \u0100nanda:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;At that time King Makh\u0101deva<br\/>by whom that lovely custom was founded<br\/>was someone else.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this, \u0100nanda, must not be understood thus.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I, at that time, was King Makh\u0101deva,<br\/>I founded that lovely custom;<br\/>the folk that came after<br\/>maintained that lovely custom founded by me.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But that lovely custom, \u0100nanda,<br\/>did not conduce to turning away from,<br\/>nor to dispassion,<br\/>stopping,<br\/>tranquillity,<br\/>super-knowledge,<br\/>self-awakening<br\/>or nibb\u0101na &#8211;<br\/>only to reaching the Brahma-world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this lovely custom founded by me now, \u0100nanda,<br\/>conduces to absolute turning away from,<br\/>to dispassion,<br\/>stopping,<br\/>tranquillity,<br\/>super-knowledge,<br\/>self-awakening<br\/>and nibb\u0101na.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, \u0100nanda,<br\/>is the lovely custom founded by me now<br\/>that conduces to absolute turning away from,<br\/>to dispassion,<br\/>stopping,<br\/>tranquillity,<br\/>super-knowledge,<br\/>self-awakening<br\/>and nibb\u0101na.?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is this ariyan eightfold Way itself,<br\/>that is to say,<br\/>perfect view,<br\/>perfect thought,<br\/>perfect speech,<br\/>perfect action,<br\/>perfect mode of livelihood,<br\/>perfect endeavour,<br\/>perfect mindfulness,<br\/>perfect concentration.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is this lovely custom founded by me now, \u0100nanda, that conduces to absolute turning away from away from,<br\/>to dispassion,<br\/>stopping,<br\/>tranquillity,<br\/>super-knowledge,<br\/>self-awakening<br\/>and nibb\u0101na.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I, \u0100nanda, speak about it
