tour in Videha<br\/>together with a large Order of monks,<br\/>with as many as five hundred monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time the brahman Brahm\u0101yu was living in Mithil\u0101.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He was worn,<br\/>old,<br\/>full of years,<br\/>he had lived his span<br\/>and was at the close of his life,<br\/>a hundred and twenty years of age;<br\/>he was master<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> of the three Vedas,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>versed in the vocabularies and rituals<br\/>together with the phonology and exegesis<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and the legendary tradition as the fifth;<br\/>he was learned in idioms,<br\/>a grammarian,<br\/>proficient in popular philosophy<br\/>and the marks of a Great Man.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The brahman Brahm\u0101yu heard:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Verily the recluse Gotama,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>son of the Sakyans,<br\/>having gone forth from the Sakyan clan,<br\/>is walking on tour in Videha<br\/>together with a large Order of monks,<br\/>with as many as five hundred monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The most lovely report has gone abroad thus<br\/>concerning this revered<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> Gotama:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;He is indeed Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>endowed with knowledge and (right) conduct,<br\/>Well-farer,<br\/>knower of the worlds,<br\/>the matchless charioteer of men to be tamed,<br\/>teacher of devas and mankind,<br\/>the Awakened One,<br\/>the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having realized through his own super-knowledge,<br\/>he makes known this world<br\/>together with devas<br\/>including the M\u0101ras and the Brahm\u0101s;<br\/>creatures<br\/>together with recluses and brahmans,<br\/>with devas and mankind.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He teaches <a id=\"pg318\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[318]<\/b><\/span><\/a> <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>that is lovely at the beginning,<br\/>lovely in the middle<br\/>and lovely at the ending;<br\/>he explains with the spirit and the letter<br\/>the Brahma-faring<br\/>completely fulfilled<br\/>and wholly purified.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Good indeed is the sight<br\/>of perfected ones such as this.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time<br\/>the brahman Brahm\u0101yu had the brahman youth Uttara as pupil;<br\/>he was master of the three Vedas,<br\/>versed in the vocabularies and rituals<br\/>together with the phonology and exegesis<br\/>and the legendary tradition as the fifth;<br\/>he was learned in idioms,<br\/>a grammarian,<br\/>proficient in popular philosophy<br\/>and the marks of a Great not,<br\/>and whether the revered Gotama is such a one<br\/>or not such a one.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Through you<br\/>will we know that revered Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So will I,<br\/>in virtue of what you say,<br\/>find out whether that revered Gotama is in fact<br\/>the revered Gotama of whom the report has gone abroad<br\/>or whether he is not,<br\/>and whether the revered Gotama<br\/>is such a one<br\/>or not such a one.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Dear Uttara, in our <i>mantras<\/i><span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>the thirty-two marks of the Great Man are traditional.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a Great Man<br\/>possessed of these<br\/>only two courses<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> are open,<br\/>not another:<br\/>If he settles in the household state<br\/>he becomes a king<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> who is a wheel-turner,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>a <i>Dhamma<\/i>-man,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>a king under <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>the ruler of the whole world,<br\/>one who <a id=\"pg319\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[319]<\/b><\/span><\/a> brings stability to his realm;<br\/>and he is possessed of the seven Treasures.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These seven Treasures of his are<br\/>the wheel-treasure,<br\/>the elephant-treasure,<br\/>the horse-treasure,<br\/>the jewel-treasure,<br\/>the woman-treasure,<br\/>the householder-treasure,<br\/>the adviser-treasure as the seventh.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He will have more than a thousand sons,<br\/>valiant,<br\/>built on heroic lines,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>able to crush opposing armies.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He dwells conquering this sea-girt land<br\/>by <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>not by stick,<br\/>not by sword.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, if he goes forth from home<br\/>into homelessness<br\/>he becomes a perfected one,<br\/>a fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>a lifter of the world&#8217;s veil.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now I, dear Uttara,<br\/>am an imparter<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> of <i>mantras<\/i>,<br\/>you are a recipient<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> of <i>mantras<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Very well, sir,&#8221;<br\/>and the brahman youth Uttara,<br\/>having answered the brahman Brahm\u0101yu in assent,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>having greeted the brahman Brahm\u0101yu,<br\/>keeping his right side towards him,<br\/>set out on tour (to find) the Lord in Videha.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Walking on tour,<br\/>he gradually approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the Lord;<br\/>having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance<br\/>the brahman youth Uttara<br\/>looked for the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>on the Lord&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And the brahman youth Uttara<br\/>saw all the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>on the Lord&#8217;s body<br\/>except two.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">About these two marks of a great man<br\/>he was in doubt,<br\/>perplexed,<br\/>uncertain,<br\/>not satisfied &#8211;<br\/>whether what was cloth-hid was sheath-cased<br\/>and whether the tongue was large.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This brahman youth Uttara sees on me<br\/>all the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>except two.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">About these two marks of a Great Man<br\/>he is in doubt,<br\/>perplexed,<br\/>uncertain,<br\/>not satisfied:<br\/>whether what is cloth-hid is sheath-cased<br\/><a id=\"pg320\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[320]<\/b><\/span><\/a> and whether my tongue is large.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord contrived such a contrivance of psychic power<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that the brahman youth Uttara saw<br\/>that that which the Lord had cloth-hid was sheath-cased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord,<br\/>having put out his tongue,<br\/>stroked it backwards and forwards<br\/>over both his ears<br\/>and he stroked it backwards and forwards<br\/>over both his nostrils<br\/>and he covered the whole dome of his forehead<br\/>with his tongue.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the brahman youth Uttara:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The recluse Gotama is possessed of the thirty-two marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose I were to follow the recluse Gotama closely<br\/>so as to watch his conduct?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then for seven months the brahman youth Uttara,<br\/>like a constant shadow,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>followed the Lord closely.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">After the lapse of the seven months<br\/>the brahman youth Uttara set out on tour for Mithil\u0101 in Videha;<br\/>walking on tour<br\/>he gradually approached Mithil\u0101<br\/>and the brahman Brahm\u0101yu;<br\/>having approached<br\/>and having greeted the brahman Brahm\u0101yu,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Brahm\u0101yu the brahman spoke thus to the brahman youth Uttara<br\/>as he was sitting down at a respectful distance:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I suppose, dear Uttara,<br\/>that the report spread abroad about the revered Gotama<br\/>was truly so<br\/>and not otherwise?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I suppose that the revered Gotama<br\/>is such a one<br\/>and not of another kind?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Sir, the report spread abroad about the revered Gotama<br\/>was truly so<br\/>and not otherwise;<br\/>this revered Gotama is such a one<br\/>and not of another kind.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And this revered Gotama is possessed of the thirty-two marks of a Great Man:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On the soles of the good Gotama&#8217;s feet<br\/>wheels appear<br\/>with a thousand spokes,<br\/>with rims and hubs,<br\/>in every way complete &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg321\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[321]<\/b><\/span><\/a> The revered Gotama has projecting heels &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has soft and tender hands and feet &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has (the fingers and toes) of his hands and feet evenly spaced<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has ankles that are midway in the leg<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn25\" href=\"#n25\">25<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama, while standing erect<br\/>and not bending,<br\/>can stroke and rub his knees<br\/>with the palms of both hands &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has sheath-cased<br\/>what is cloth-hid &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama is the colour of gold<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn27\" Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Because of his smooth complexion<br\/>no dust or dirt adheres to his body &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has hairs that are separate &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The separate hairs grow (one) to each pore &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has hairs that grow upward &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The upward growing hairs are dark blue,<br\/>the colour of collyrium,<br\/>curling in rings,<br\/>curling to the right &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has like Brahm\u0101&#8217;s;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn34\" href=\"#n34\">34<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he speaks like a karamka bird<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn35\" href=\"#n35\">35<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has eyes of an intense blue &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has eyelashes like a cow&#8217;s &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The hair that the revered Gotama has growing between the eyebrows<br\/>is white and soft like cotton-down &#8211;<br\/>the good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has this mark of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama has a head shaped like a (royal) turban.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn36\" href=\"#n36\">36<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The good Gotama,<br\/>a Great Man,<br\/>has also this mark of a Great Man.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn37\" href=\"#n37\">37<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama is possessed of these thirty-two marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If the revered Gotama is walking<br\/>he leads off with his right foot;<br\/>he does not put the foot too far (forward),<br\/>he does not place the foot too short;<br\/>he does not walk too quickly;<br\/>he does not walk too slowly;<br\/>he does not walk<br\/>knocking knee against knee<br\/>or ankle against ankle;<br\/><a id=\"pg323\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[323]<\/b><\/span><\/a> while he is walking<br\/>he does not bend his thighs up,<br\/>he does not bend his thighs down,<br\/>he does not bend his thighs in,<br\/>he does not bend his thighs out.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn38\" href=\"#n38\">38<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As the revered Gotama walks<br\/>he moves only with the lower part of his body<br\/>and does not walk with his (full) bodily strength.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn39\" href=\"#n39\">39<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"floatrpp wpx200 marl6\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>knowledge and insight = height=\"32\" alt=\"p.p. explains it all\"\/> <span class=\"f2\">\u2014 p.p.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he is looking around,<br\/>the revered Gotama looks round with his whole body,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn40\" href=\"#n40\">40<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he does not look up,<br\/>he does not look down,<br\/>and he does not walk without observing,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn41\" href=\"#n41\">41<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>for he looks (ahead) a plough&#8217;s length;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn42\" href=\"#n42\">42<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>further than that<br\/>his knowledge and insight become unobstructed.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn43\" href=\"#n43\">43<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On entering into a house<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn44\" href=\"#n44\">44<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he does not bend his body up,<br\/>he does not bend his body down,<br\/>he does not bend his body in,<br\/>he does not bend his body out.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He turns round<br\/>not too far from hie seat,<br\/>not too near it,<br\/>and he does not sit down on the seat<br\/>clutching hold of it with his hand,<br\/>nor does he fling his body<br\/>(in a slovenly way<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn45\" href=\"#n45\">45<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span>)<br\/>on to the seat.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn46\" href=\"#n46\">46<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he is seated in a house<br\/>he does not fall into unseemly behaviour with his hands,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn47\" href=\"#n47\">47<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he does not fall into unseemly <a id=\"pg324\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[324]<\/b><\/span><\/a> behaviour with his feet;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn48\" href=\"#n48\">48<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he does not sit down<br\/>crossing knee over knee<br\/>or ankle over ankle,<br\/>nor does he sit down<br\/>holding his jaw in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he is seated in a house<br\/>he is not afraid,<br\/>does not tremble,<br\/>shake<br\/>or quiver &#8211;<br\/>and so is the revered Gotama<br\/>when he is sitting in a house<br\/>unafraid,<br\/>untrembling,<br\/>not shaking,<br\/>not quivering,<br\/>unruffled,<br\/>intent on aloofness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he is receiving water for the bowl<br\/>he does not turn the bowl up,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl down,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl inwards,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl outwards;<br\/>he receives neither too little<br\/>nor too much water for the bowl.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"floatrpp wpx200 marl6\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If he doesn&#8217;t wash his hands until he puts down the bowl then his hands are not washed when his bowl is washed. &#8220;Not before he has washed his hands does he put down the bowl.&#8221;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"#n49\">49<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>he washes the bowl without twirling it round;<br\/>not until he has put the bowl down on the ground<br\/>does he wash his hands;<br\/>by the time the hands are washed<br\/>the bowl is washed;<br\/>by the time the bowl is washed<br\/>the hands are washed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He throws away the water for the bowl<br\/>not too far,<br\/>not too near,<br\/>and without scattering it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he is receiving boiled rice,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl up,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl down,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl inwards,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl outwards;<br\/>he receives neither too little<br\/>nor too much boiled rice.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama eats the proper proportion of curry (to rice<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn50\" href=\"#n50\">50<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span>)<br\/>and he does not neglect (the rice)<br\/>with each mouthful of curry.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama swallows each mouthful<br\/>only after having turned it round<br\/>two or three times in his mouth;<br\/>there is not a single grain of boiled rice<br\/>that enters his body<br\/>without having been broken up,<br\/>and not a single grain of boiled rice<br\/>remains in his mouth<br\/>before he proceeds to the (next) mouthful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama eats food<br\/>experiencing its flavour<br\/>but not experiencing greed for the flavour.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama eats food<br\/>that is possessed of the eight characteristics<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn51\" href=\"#n51\">51<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>but not for fun<br\/>or indulgence<br\/>or personal charm<br\/>or beautification,<br\/>but just enough for the support of his body<br\/>and keeping it going,<br\/>for keeping it unharmed,<br\/>for furthering the Brahma-faring,<br\/>thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Thus will I crush out an old feeling<br\/>and not allow a new feeling to arise,<br\/>and then there will be subsistence for me<br\/>and blamelessness<br\/>and abiding in comfort.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn52\" href=\"#n52\">52<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span>|| ||<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has eaten<br\/>and is accepting water for the bowl,<br\/>he does not <a id=\"pg325\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[325]<\/b><\/span><\/a> , turn the bowl up,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl down,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl inwards,<br\/>he does not turn the bowl outwards.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He receives neither too little<br\/>nor too much water for the bowl.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He washes the bowl<br\/>without making it clatter,<br\/>he washes the bowl without twirling it round;<br\/>not until he has put the bowl down on the ground<br\/>does he wash his hands;<br\/>by the time the hands are washed<br\/>the bowl is washed;<br\/>by the time the bowl is washed<br\/>the hands are washed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He throws away the water for the bowl<br\/>not too far,<br\/>not too near,<br\/>and without scattering it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has eaten,<br\/>he places the bowl on the ground,<br\/>not too far,<br\/>not too near,<br\/>for he is not without concern for the bowl<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn53\" href=\"#n53\">53<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>yet he is not over-protective of the bowl.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has eaten,<br\/>he sits silent for a moment,<br\/>but he does not let pass<br\/>the time for giving thanks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has eaten,<br\/>he gives thanks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He does not decry that meal,<br\/>he does not hope for another meal;<br\/>on the contrary he delights,<br\/>rouses,<br\/>inspires,<br\/>gladdens that assembly<br\/>with talk on <i>Dhamma<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has delighted,<br\/>roused,<br\/>inspired,<br\/>gladdened that assembly<br\/>with talk on <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>he departs.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He does not walk too quickly,<br\/>he does not walk too slowly,<br\/>he does not walk (as if) anxious<br\/>to get free (of that assembly).<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn54\" href=\"#n54\">54<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama&#8217;s robe<br\/>is not pulled up too high on his body,<br\/>it is not pulled down too low;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn55\" href=\"#n55\">55<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and neither does it stick to his body,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn56\" href=\"#n56\">56<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>nor is it drawn away from his body,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn57\" href=\"#n57\">57<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and neither does the wind<br\/>blow the revered Gotama&#8217;s robe about on his body,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn58\" href=\"#n58\">58<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>nor do dust and dirt<br\/>cling to the revered Gotama&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has gone to a monastery<br\/>he sits down on an appointed seat<br\/>and while sitting down<br\/>he cleanses his feet<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn59\" href=\"#n59\">59<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>but the revered Gotama does not live<br\/>intent on the practice of beautifying his feet.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When he has cleansed his feet<br\/>he sits down cross-legged,<br\/>holding the body erect<br\/>and arousing mindfulness in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He does not strive after hurt of self,<br\/>he does not strive after hurt of others,<br\/>he does not strive after hurt of both.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn60\" href=\"#n60\">60<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The revered Gotama sits down<br\/>striving only after weal of self,<br\/>weal of others,<br\/>weal of both,<br\/>weal of the whole world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When, in a monastery, he is teaching <i>Dhamma<\/i> in an assembly,<br\/>he does not exalt that assembly,<br\/>he does not disparage that assembly;<br\/>on the contrary he delights,<br\/>rouses,<br\/>inspires, <a id=\"pg326\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[326]<\/b><\/span><\/a> gladdens that assembly<br\/>with talk on <i>Dhamma<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The sound that issues from the revered Gotama&#8217;s mouth<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn61\" href=\"#n61\">61<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>is possessed of eight characteristics:<br\/>it is distinct<br\/>and intelligible<br\/>and sweet<br\/>and audible<br\/>and fluent<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn62\" href=\"#n62\">62<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and clear<br\/>and deep<br\/>and resonant.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Wherefore when the revered Gotama<br\/>instructs an assembly by voice<br\/>the sound does not carry beyond that assembly.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These, after being delighted,<br\/>roused,<br\/>inspired,<br\/>gladdened by the revered Gotama<br\/>with talk on <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>rising from their seats,<br\/>depart reluctantly,<br\/>keeping their gaze on him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We, sir, have seen that revered Gotama walking,<br\/>we have seen him standing still,<br\/>we have seen him sitting silent within a house,<br\/>we have seen him eating in a house,<br\/>we have seen him sitting silent after he has eaten,<br\/>we have seen him giving thanks after he has eaten,<br\/>we have seen him going to a monastery,<br\/>we have seen him sitting silent in a monastery,<br\/>we have seen him in a monastery<br\/>teaching <i>Dhamma<\/i> in an assembly.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This revered Gotama is like this<br\/>and like that<br\/>and even more so.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn63\" href=\"#n63\">63<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, Brahm\u0101yu the brahman,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>having arranged his upper robe over one shoulder,<br\/>having saluted the Lord with joined palms,<br\/>three times uttered this solemn utterance:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Praise to that Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Praise to that Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Praise to that Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Perhaps somewhere,<br\/>sometime<br\/>we might meet this revered Gotama,<br\/>perhaps there might be some conversation between us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord, walking on tour in Videha,<br\/>in due course arrived at Mithil\u0101.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there<br\/>the Lord stayed near Mithil\u0101 in Makh\u0101deva&#8217;s Mango Grove.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Brahmans and householders of Mithil\u0101 heard:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Verily the recluse Gotama,<br\/>son of the Sakyans,<br\/>having gone forth from the Sakyan clan,<br\/>is walking on tour in Videha<br\/>together with a large Order of monks,<br\/>with as many as five hundred monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The most lovely report has gone abroad thus<br\/>concerning the revered Gotama:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;He is indeed Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>endowed with knowledge and (right) conduct,<br\/>Well-farer,<br\/>knower of the worlds,<br\/>the matchless charioteer of men to be tamed,<br\/>teacher of devas and mankind,<br\/>the Awakened One,<br\/>the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having realized through his own super-knowledge,<br\/>he makes known this world<br\/>together with devas<br\/>including the M\u0101ras and the Brahm\u0101s;<br\/>creatures<br\/>together with recluses and brahmans,<br\/>with devas and mankind.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He teaches <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>that is lovely at the beginning,<br\/>lovely in the middle<br\/>and lovely at the ending;<br\/>he explains with the spirit and the letter<br\/>the Brahma-faring<br\/>completely fulfilled<br\/>and wholly purified.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Good indeed is the sight<br\/>of perfected ones such as this.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the brahmans and householders of Mithil\u0101<br\/>approached the Lord:<br\/>some, having approached<br\/>and having greeted the Lord,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance;<br\/>some, after they had exchanged greetings with the Lord<br\/>and had conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>sat down at a <a id=\"pg327\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[327]<\/b><\/span><\/a> respectful distance;<br\/>some, after saluting the Lord with joined palms,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance;<br\/>some, having made known to the Lord the name of their clan,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance;<br\/>some, becoming silent,<br\/>sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The brahman Brahm\u0101yu heard:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Verily the recluse Gotama,<br\/>son of the Sakyans,<br\/>gone forth from the Sakyan clan,<br\/>has arrived at Mithil\u0101<br\/>and is staying near Mithil\u0101<br\/>in Makhadeva&#8217;s Mango Grove.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman<br\/>together with a number of brahman youths<br\/>approached Makh\u0101deva&#8217;s Mango Grove.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When Brahm\u0101yu the brahman was near the Mango Grove<br\/>it occurred to him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is not suitable in me<br\/>that I should approach to see the recluse Gotama<br\/>without being announced first.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So Brahm\u0101yu the brahman addressed a certain brahman youth,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Come you, brahman youth,<br\/>approach the recluse Gotama;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>in my name ask the recluse Gotama whether he is well,<br\/>not indisposed,<br\/>of bodily vigour,<br\/>strong,<br\/>abiding in comfort,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Good Gotama, Brahm\u0101yu the brahman<br\/>is asking whether the revered Gotama is well,<br\/>not indisposed,<br\/>of bodily vigour,<br\/>strong,<br\/>abiding in comfort&#8217;;<br\/>and then speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, Brahm\u0101yu the brahman is worn,<br\/>old,<br\/>full of years,<br\/>he has lived his span<br\/>and is at the close of his life,<br\/>a hundred and twenty years of age;<br\/>he was master of the three Vedas,<br\/>versed in the vocabularies and rituals<br\/>together with the phonology and exegesis<br\/>and the legendary tradition as the fifth;<br\/>he was learned in idioms,<br\/>a grammarian,<br\/>proficient in popular philosophy<br\/>and the marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Of all the brahmans and householders, sir,<br\/>who live in Mithil\u0101,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman is pointed to<br\/>as chief in respect of wealth,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman is pointed to<br\/>as chief in respect of <i>mantras<\/i>,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman is pointed to<br\/>as chief in respect of longevity<br\/>as well as of renown.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is anxious to see the good Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Very well, sir,&#8221;<br\/>and the brahman youth, having answered the brahman Brahm\u0101yu in assent,<br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the Lord,<br\/>and having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>he Stood at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was standing at a respectful distance,<br\/>the brahman youth spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, the brahman Brahm\u0101yu is asking whether the revered Gotama is well,<br\/>not indisposed,<br\/>of bodily vigour,<br\/>strong,<br\/>abiding in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The brahman Brahm\u0101yu, good Gotama, is worn, old,<br\/>full of years,<br\/>he has lived his span<br\/>and is at the close of his life,<br\/>a hundred and twenty years of age;<br\/>he was master of the three Vedas,<br\/>versed in the vocabularies and rituals<br\/>together with the phonology and exegesis<br\/>and the legendary tradition as the fifth;<br\/>he was learned in idioms,<br\/>a grammarian,<br\/>proficient in popular philosophy<br\/>and the marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Of all the brahmans and householders, sir,<br\/>who live in Mithil\u0101,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the <a id=\"pg328\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[328]<\/b><\/span><\/a> brahman is pointed to<br\/>as chief in respect of wealth,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman is pointed to<br\/>as chief in respect of <i>mantras<\/i>,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman is pointed to<br\/>as chief in respect of longevity<br\/>as well as of renown.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is anxious to see the good Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Brahm\u0101yu the brahman must now do<br\/>that for which he deems it the right time,<br\/>brahman youth.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then that brahman youth<br\/>approached Brahm\u0101yu the brahman;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he spoke thus to Brahm\u0101yu the brahman:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Permission has been given<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn64\" href=\"#n64\">64<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> revered sir,<br\/>by the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Revered sir, you may now do<br\/>that for which you deem it the right time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman approached the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">His assembly saw the brahman Brahm\u0101yu coming in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having seen him,<br\/>they, standing each at his own side,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn65\" href=\"#n65\">65<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>made room for him<br\/>because he was well known and renowned.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman spoke thus to that assembly:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;No, good sirs,<br\/>you sit down each on your own seat,<br\/>I will sit here<br\/>near the recluse Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the Lord;<br\/>having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman looked for<br\/>the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>on the Lord&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And Brahm\u0101yu the brahman saw<br\/>all the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>on the Lord&#8217;s body<br\/>except two.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">About these two marks of a Great Man<br\/>he was in doubt,<br\/>perplexed,<br\/>uncertain,<br\/>not satisfied &#8211;<br\/>whether what was cloth-hid was sheath-cased<br\/>and whether the tongue was large.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman addressed the Lord in verses:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Of these thirty-two marks of a Great Man of which I have heard<br\/>There are two that I do not see on your body, Gotama.<br\/>I wonder whether what is cloth-hid is sheath-cased, Supreme of men?<br\/>Or is it female? I wonder whether the tongue is not short?<br\/>I wonder whether you have a long tongue. So that I might know this,<br\/>Put forth this tongue, dispel our doubt, Seer.<br\/>For welfare here and now, and for bliss in a future state<br\/>We ask for permission (to see) that which we long (to know).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg329\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[329]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Then it occurred to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This brahman Brahm\u0101yu sees on me<br\/>all the thirty-two marks of a Great Man except two.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">About these two marks of a Great Man<br\/>he is in doubt,<br\/>perplexed,<br\/>uncertain,<br\/>not satisfied &#8211;<br\/>whether what is cloth-hid is sheath-cased<br\/>and whether my tongue is large.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord contrived such a contrivance of psychic power<br\/>that the brahman Brahm\u0101yu saw<br\/>that that which the Lord had cloth-hid was sheath-cased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord, having put out his tongue,<br\/>stroked it backwards and forwards<br\/>over both his ears<br\/>and he stroked it backwards and forwards<br\/>over both his nostrils<br\/>and he covered the whole dome of his forehead<br\/>with his tongue.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord responded in verses<br\/>to the brahman Brahm\u0101yu:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Those thirty-two marks of a Great Man of which you have heard<br\/>Are all on my body. Do not you doubt them, brahman.<br\/>What<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn66\" href=\"#n66\">66<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is to be known is known by me, and to be developed is developed,<br\/>What is to be got rid of has been got rid of &#8211; therefore, brahman, am I Awake.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn67\" href=\"#n67\">67<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>For welfare here and now and for bliss in a future state<br\/>Do ask for permission (to see) that which you long (to know).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the brahman Brahm\u0101yu:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Permission has been given me by the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose I were to ask the recluse Gotama<br\/>about the goal either of the here and now<br\/>or of a future state?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But then it occurred to the brahman Brahm\u0101yu:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I myself am skilled in the goals of the here and now,<br\/>and others ask me about the goal of the here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose I were to ask the recluse Gotama<br\/>simply about the goal of a future state?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman addressed the Lord in verses:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;How is one a brahman? How does one become master of knowledge?<br\/>How is one a threefold knowledge-man? Who is called learned?<br\/>How is one perfected? How does one become whole?<br\/>And how is one a sage? Who is called Awake?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord responded in verses<br\/>to the brahman Brahm\u0101yu:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\"><a id=\"pg330\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[330]<\/b><\/span><\/a> &#8220;Who knows his former habitations and sees heaven and the sorrowful ways,<br\/>Who has attained destruction of births,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn68\" href=\"#n68\">68<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> accomplished by super-knowledge, a Sage is he.<br\/>Who knows his mind is quite pure, freed from every attachment,<br\/>Who has got rid of birth and dying, in the Brahma-faring Whole is he.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn69\" href=\"#n69\">69<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Who is master of all states of mind,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn70\" href=\"#n70\">70<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> such a one Awake is called.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>arranging his upper robe over one shoulder,<br\/>having inclined his head to the Lord&#8217;s feet,<br\/>kissed the Lord&#8217;s feet on all sides<br\/>with his mouth<br\/>and stroked them on all sides<br\/>with his hands,<br\/>and he made known his (own) name:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn71\" href=\"#n71\">71<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I, good Gotama, am Brahm\u0101yu, the brahman.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then that company was filled with wonder and marvel,<br\/>and said:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Indeed it is wonderful,<br\/>indeed it is marvellous<br\/>how great is the psychic power<br\/>and the majesty<br\/>of the recluse<br\/>in virtue of which<br\/>this Brahm\u0101yu the brahman,<br\/>well known and renowned,<br\/>pays such deep respect.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord spoke thus<br\/>to Brahm\u0101yu the brahman:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Enough, brahman, rise up;<br\/>do sit down on your own seat<br\/>since your mind was pleased with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the brahman Brahm\u0101yu,<br\/>having risen up,<br\/>sat down on his own seat.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord gave a talk to Brahm\u0101yu the brahman<br\/>on various topics:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn72\" href=\"#n72\">72<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>talk on giving,<br\/>talk on moral habit,<br\/>talk on heaven;<br\/>he explained the peril,<br\/>the vanity,<br\/>the depravity of the pleasures of the senses,<br\/>the advantage in renouncing them.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When the Lord knew<br\/>that the mind of Brahm\u0101yu the brahman was ready,<br\/>malleable,<br\/>devoid of the hindrances,<br\/>uplifted,<br\/>pleased,<br\/>then he explained to him<br\/>that teaching on <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>that the Awakened Ones have themselves discovered:<br\/>anguish,<br\/>uprising,<br\/>stopping,<br\/>the Way.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And as a clean cloth<br\/>without black specks<br\/>will easily take dye,<br\/>even so as Brahm\u0101yu the brahman was (sitting) on that very seat<br\/>did <i>Dhamma<\/i>-vision,<br\/>dustless and stainless,<br\/>arise in him:<br\/>that<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;whatever is liable to origination<br\/>all that is liable to stopping.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman,<br\/>having seen <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>attained <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>known <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>plunged into <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>having crossed over doubt,<br\/><a id=\"pg331\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[331]<\/b><\/span><\/a> put away uncertainty<br\/>and attained without another&#8217;s help<br\/>to full confidence in the Teacher&#8217;s instruction,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is excellent, good Gotama;<br\/>it is excellent, good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Even, good Gotama,<br\/>as one might set upright<br\/>what had been upset,<br\/>or disclose what was covered,<br\/>or show the way<br\/>to one who had gone astray,<br\/>or bring an oil-lamp into the darkness<br\/>thinking that those with vision might see material shapes,<br\/>even so is <i>Dhamma<\/i> made clear<br\/>in many a figure<br\/>by the good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So I am going to the revered Gotama (for refuge)<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn73\" href=\"#n73\">73<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and to <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>and to the Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">May the revered Gotama accept me<br\/>as a lay-disiple<br\/>going for refuge<br\/>from this day forth<br\/>for as long as life lasts.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And may the revered Gotama<br\/>consent to a meal with me<br\/>on the morrow<br\/>together with the Order of monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord consented by becoming silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Brahm\u0101yu the brahman,<br\/>having understood the Lord&#8217;s consent,<br\/>rising up from his seat,<br\/>having greeted the Lord,<br\/>departed keeping his right side towards him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the brahman Brahm\u0101yu<br\/>having had sumptuous foods,<br\/>solid and soft,<br\/>prepared in his own dwelling<br\/>towards the end of that night,<br\/>had the time announced to the Lord,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is time, good Gotama,<br\/>the meal is ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord,<br\/>having dressed in the morning,<br\/>taking his bowl and robe,<br\/>approached the dwelling of Brahm\u0101yu the brahman;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he sat down on the appointed seat<br\/>together with the Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then did Brahm\u0101yu the brahman<br\/>for seven days<br\/>with his own hand<br\/>serve and satisfy the Order of monks<br\/>with the Awakened One at its head<br\/>with sumptuous foods,<br\/>solid and soft.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then at the end of the seven days<br\/>the Lord set out on tour in Videha.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Not long after the Lord had set out<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman passed away.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then a number of monks approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>having greeted the Lord,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As they were sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>these monks spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered sir,<br\/>Brahm\u0101yu the brahman has passed away.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is his bourn,<br\/>what his future state?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Clever,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn74\" href=\"#n74\">74<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> monks,<br\/>was the brahman Brahm\u0101yu;<br\/>he followed after <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>according to various parts of <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn75\" href=\"#n75\">75<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and he did not <a id=\"pg332\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[332]<\/b><\/span><\/a> annoy me<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn76\" href=\"#n76\">76<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>with questionings about <i>Dhamma<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, Brahm\u0101yu the brahman,<br\/>by the complete destruction of the five fetters<br\/>binding to this lower (shore),<br\/>is of spontaneous uprising,<br\/>one who attains nibb\u0101na there,<br\/>not liable to return from that world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus spoke the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Delighted, these monks rejoiced in what the Lord had said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 ctr\">Discourse with Brahm\u0101yu<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"demi\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a A person whose fingers are &#8220;webbed&#8221; (<i>i.e.<\/i> grown together) like a snake&#8217;s hood is not even fit to go forth (<i>Vin.<\/i> i. 71, quoted <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 376). So how could a &#8220;webbed finger&#8221; be a mark of a Great Man? &#8220;With hands and feet like a net&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/dhamma-vinaya\/pts\/dn\/dn.14.rhyt.pts.htm#pg14\">(<i>Dial.<\/i> ii. 14)<\/a> explains nothing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n25\" href=\"#fn25\">25<\/a>]<\/sup> Not towards the heels as in other people, <i>MA.<\/i> iii. 377.
