\u0100pa\u1e47a.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg333\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[333]<\/b><\/span><\/a> The most lovely report has gone abroad thus<br\/>concerning this revered Gotama:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;He is indeed Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>endowed with knowledge and (right) conduct,<br\/>Well-farer,<br\/>knower of the worlds,<br\/>the matchless charioteer of men to be tamed,<br\/>teacher of devas and mankind,<br\/>the Awakened One,<br\/>the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having realized through his own super-knowledge,<br\/>he makes known this world<br\/>together with devas<br\/>including the M\u0101ras and the Brahm\u0101s;<br\/>creatures<br\/>together with recluses and brahmans,<br\/>with devas and mankind.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He teaches <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>that is lovely at the beginning,<br\/>lovely in the middle<br\/>and lovely at the ending;<br\/>he explains with the spirit and the letter<br\/>the Brahma-faring<br\/>completely fulfilled<br\/>and wholly purified.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Good indeed is the sight<br\/>of perfected ones such as this.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic<br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the Lord;<br\/>having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As the matted hair ascetic Ke\u1e47iya<br\/>was sitting down at a respectful distance<br\/>the Lord delighted,<br\/>roused,<br\/>inspired,<br\/>gladdened him<br\/>with talk on dhamma.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic,<br\/>delighted,<br\/>roused,<br\/>inspired,<br\/>gladdened by the Lord<br\/>with talk on dhamma,<br\/>spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;May the good Gotama<br\/>together with the Order of monks<br\/>consent to a meal with me<br\/>on the morrow.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>the Lord spoke thus<br\/>to Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But, Ke\u1e47iya,<br\/>great is the Order of monks,<br\/>twelve hundred and fifty monks,<br\/>and you are favourably disposed towards<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> the brahmans.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time did Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic<br\/>speak thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Although, good Gotama,<br\/>the Order of monks is large,<br\/>twelve hundred and fifty monks,<br\/>and although I am favourably disposed towards the brahmans,<br\/>(yet) may the good Gotama consent to a meal with me<br\/>on the morrow<br\/>together with the Order of monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time did the Lord speak thus<br\/>to Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But, Ke\u1e47iya,<br\/>great is the Order of monks,<br\/>twelve hundred and fifty monks,<br\/>and you are favourably disposed towards the brahmans.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a third time did Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic<br\/>speak thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Although, good Gotama,<br\/>the Order of monks is large,<br\/>twelve hundred and fifty monks,<br\/>and although I am favourably disposed towards the brahmans,<br\/>(yet) may the good Gotama consent to a meal with me<br\/>on the morrow<br\/>together with the Order of monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord consented by becoming silent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic,<br\/>having understood the Lord&#8217;s consent,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>approached his own hermitage;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he addressed his friends and acquaintances,<br\/>his kith and kin,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Let my good friends and acquaintances,<br\/>my kith and kin,<br\/>hear that the recluse Gotama<br\/>together with the Order of monks<br\/>has been invited <a id=\"pg334\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[334]<\/b><\/span><\/a> by me for a meal on the morrow.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So would you do personal service for me?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, good sir,&#8221;<br\/>and when the friends and acquaintances,<br\/>the kith and kin of Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic<br\/>had answered him in assent,<br\/>some dug pits (for the fire),<br\/>some chopped sticks,<br\/>some washed pots,<br\/>some put out jars of water,<br\/>and some got ready the seats,<br\/>while Ke\u1e47iya himself<br\/>prepared a pavilion.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now at that time Sela the brahman<br\/>was living in \u0100pa\u1e47a.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He was master of the three Vedas,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>versed in the vocabularies and rituals<br\/>together with the phonology and exegesis<br\/>and the legendary tradition as the fifth;<br\/>he was learned in idioms,<br\/>a grammarian,<br\/>proficient in popular philosophy<br\/>and the marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He instructed three hundred brahman youths in mantras.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At that time Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic<br\/>was favourably disposed towards the brahman Sela.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then as Sela the brahman,<br\/>surrounded by the three hundred brahman youths,<br\/>was pacing up and down<br\/>and roaming about on foot<br\/>he approached the hermitage of Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And in the hermitage of Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic<br\/>Sela the brahman saw some people digging pits,<br\/>some chopping sticks,<br\/>some washing pots,<br\/>some putting out jars of water,<br\/>and some getting ready the seats,<br\/>while Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic himself<br\/>prepared a pavilion.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So he spoke thus to Ke\u1e47iya the matted hair ascetic:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How now, is there to be a marriage<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>at the good Ke\u1e47iya&#8217;s<br\/>or a giving in marriage,<br\/>or is a great oblation arranged,<br\/>or has King Bimbis\u0101ra of Magadha<br\/>been invited for the morrow<br\/>together with his troops?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;No, Sela, there is to be no marriage with me<br\/>nor giving in marriage,<br\/>nor has King Seniya Bimbis\u0101ra of Magadha<br\/>been invited for the morrow<br\/>together with his troops.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But I have arranged a great oblation:<br\/>the recluse Gotama,<br\/>son of the Sakyans,<br\/>gone forth from the Sakyan clan,<br\/>who has been walking on tour among the people of A\u1e45guttarapa,<br\/>together with a large Order of monks,<br\/>with twelve hundred and fifty monks,<br\/>has arrived at \u0100pa\u1e47a.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The most lovely report has gone abroad thus concerning the recluse Gotama:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;He is monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg335\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[335]<\/b><\/span><\/a> &#8220;Ke\u1e47iya, did you say<br\/>&#8216;Awakened One&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I did say &#8216;Awakened One,&#8217; Sela.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Ke\u1e47iya, did you say &#8216;Awakened One&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;I did say &#8216;Awakened One,&#8217; Sela.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the brahman Sela:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Even this sound &#8216;Awakened One&#8217;<br\/>is hard to come by in the world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But in our mantras<br\/>the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>are traditional.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a Great Man endowed with these,<br\/>only two courses are open, not another . . .<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But if he goes forth from home into homelessness<br\/>he becomes a perfected one,<br\/>a fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>a lifter of the world&#8217;s veil.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For a Great Man<br\/>possessed of these<br\/>only two courses are open,<br\/>not another:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If he settles in the household state<br\/>he becomes a king who is a wheel-turner,<br\/>a <i>Dhamma<\/i>-man,<br\/>a king under <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>the ruler of the whole world,<br\/>one who brings stability to his realm;<br\/>and he is possessed of the seven Treasures.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These seven Treasures of his are<br\/>the wheel-treasure,<br\/>the elephant-treasure,<br\/>the horse-treasure,<br\/>the jewel-treasure,<br\/>the woman-treasure,<br\/>the householder-treasure,<br\/>the adviser-treasure as the seventh.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He will have more than a thousand sons,<br\/>valiant,<br\/>built on heroic lines,<br\/>able to crush opposing armies.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He dwells conquering this sea-girt land<br\/>by <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>not by stick,<br\/>not by sword.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, if he goes forth from home<br\/>into homelessness<br\/>he becomes a perfected one,<br\/>a fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>a lifter of the world&#8217;s veil.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And where, good Ke\u1e47iya,<br\/>is this revered Gotama,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>staying at present?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, Ke\u1e47iya<br\/>the matted hair ascetic,<br\/>stretching out his right arm,<br\/>spoke thus to Sela the brahman:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;There, good Sela,<br\/>by that dark blue line of forest.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Sela the brahman<br\/>with the three hundred brahman youths<br\/>approached the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Sela the brahman<br\/>addressed these brahman youths,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Come quietly, good sirs,<br\/>(carefully) placing foot after foot;<br\/>for, like lone-faring lions,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>these Lords are hard to approach.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So if I should hold converse with the recluse Gotama,<br\/>do not interrupt me, good sirs;<br\/>but wait for me<br\/>until the end of the conversation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Sela the brahman approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>he exchanged greetings with the Lord;<br\/>having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>he sat down at respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance<br\/>Sela the brahman looked for the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>on the Lord&#8217;s body.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And Sela the brahman<br\/>saw all the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>on the Lord&#8217;s body<br\/>except two.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">About these two marks of a great man<br\/>he was in doubt,<br\/>perplexed,<br\/>uncertain,<br\/>not satisfied &#8211;<br\/>whether what was cloth-hid was sheath-cased<br\/>and whether the tongue was large.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This Sela the brahman sees on me<br\/>all the thirty-two marks of a Great Man<br\/>except two.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">About these two marks of a Great Man<br\/>he is in doubt,<br\/>perplexed,<br\/>uncertain,<br\/>not satisfied:<br\/>whether what is cloth-hid is sheath-cased<br\/>and whether my tongue is large.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord contrived such a contrivance of psychic power<br\/>that Sela the brahman saw<br\/>that that which the Lord had cloth-hid was sheath-cased.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord,<br\/>having put out his tongue,<br\/>stroked it backwards and forwards<br\/>over both his ears<br\/>and he stroked it backwards and forwards<br\/>over both his nostrils<br\/>and he covered the whole dome of his forehead<br\/>with his tongue.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to Sela the brahman:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The Lord is endowed with the thirty-two marks of a Great Man in full,<br\/>not partially,<br\/>but yet I do not know<br\/>whether he is an Awakened One or not.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">All the same,<br\/>I have heard it said<br\/>by aged brahmans,<br\/>full of years,<br\/>teachers of teachers:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;When their own praises are being spoken,<br\/>those that are perfected ones,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened Ones<br\/>reveal the self.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose <a id=\"pg336\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[336]<\/b><\/span><\/a> that I,<br\/>face to face with the recluse Gotama<br\/>were to praise him in suitable verses?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Sela the brahman,<br\/>face to face with the Lord,<br\/>praised him in suitable verses:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sela<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Your<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> body is complete,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> gleaming, finely proportioned,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> beautiful to behold;<br\/>you are the colour of gold, the Lord; lustrous your teeth, you are heroic.<br\/>Indeed those distinguishing signs of a finely proportioned man &#8211;<br\/>all these marks of a Great Man are on your body.<br\/>Your eyes are clear, the face is full,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> you are well grown,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> straight, splendid;<br\/>in the midst of an Order of recluses you shine like the sun.<br\/>Lovely to see is a monk with a golden coloured skin;<br\/>but for this recluseship what use is such supremacy of colour?<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>You should be a king, a wheel-tumer, a bull of charioteers,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>victor over the whole world, chief of the Rose-apple Grove.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Nobles and wealthy kings will be your vassals;<br\/>you are king of kings, the lord of men; rule, 0 Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg337\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[337]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Gotama<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;I am a king, Sela,<br\/>a matchless king under dhamma;<br\/>I turn the wheel by dhamma,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn22\" href=\"#n22\">22<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>the wheel that cannot be turned back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sela<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Self-Awakened do you profess to be,<br\/>&#8216;A matchless king under dhamma;<br\/>I turn the wheel by <i>Dhamma<\/i>&#8216; &#8211; thus, Gotama, you speak.<br\/>But who is the revered one&#8217;s captain,<br\/>the disciple second to the Teacher?<br\/>Who turns on this wheel of <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>That was set turning by you?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gotama<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;The wheel set turning by me, Sela,<br\/>The matchless wheel of <i>Dhamma<\/i> &#8211;<br\/>S\u0101riputta<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn23\" href=\"#n23\">23<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> turns it on;<br\/>he is heir born<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> to the Tath\u0101gata.<br\/>What is to be known is known by me,<br\/>and to be developed developed is,<br\/>what is to be got rid of has been got rid of &#8211;<br\/>therefore, brahman, am I Awake.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn25\" href=\"#n25\">25<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Dispel your doubt in me, have faith, brahman.<br\/>Ever difficult to come by is the sight of Self-Awakened Ones.<br\/>Ever difficult to come by is their appearance in the world.<br\/>But I, brahman, am Self-Awakened, a physician without peer,<br\/>Brahma-become, without compare, crushing M\u0101ra&#8217;s hosts;<br\/>having mastered all foes I rejoice, with no fear from anywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg338\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[338]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Sela<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Attend to this, good sirs. As speaks the Visioned One,<br\/>physician, great hero, so roars the forest-lion.<br\/>Seeing him, Brahma-become, without compare, crushing M\u0101ra&#8217;s hosts,<br\/>who should not have faith &#8211; even a base-born black?<br\/>Who wishes, let him follow me; or, who wishes it not, let him depart;<br\/>but I will go forth here under Him of Excellent Wisdom.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Brahmans<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;If this teaching of the fully Self-Awakened One is agreeable to your reverence,<br\/>we too will go forth under Him of Excellent Wisdom.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sela<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;These three hundred brahmans, their palms joined in salutation, are asking<br\/>to fare the Brahma-faring under you, 0 Lord.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gotama<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Well taught<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn26\" href=\"#n26\">26<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is the Brahma-faring, Sela,<br\/>It is self-realized, it is timeless.<br\/>The going forth in it is nothing vain for him who trains diligently.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Sela the brahman and his company<br\/>received the going forth under the Lord,<br\/>they received ordination.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When the Lord had thanked the matted hair ascetic Ke\u1e47iya in these verses,<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>he departed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable Sela and his company,<br\/>dwelling alone,<br\/>aloof,<br\/>diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute,<br\/>having soon realized here and now<br\/>by their own super-knowledge<br\/>that matchless goal of the The wheel of command is: get rid of this, make that arise.
