he was master of the three Vedas<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8230; proficient in &#8230; the marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then it occurred to these brahmans:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This brahman youth Assal\u0101yana is residing at S\u0101vatth\u012b.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is young, his head shaven &#8230; proficient in &#8230; the marks of a Great Man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is capable of arguing about this saying with the recluse Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then these brahmans approached the brahman youth Assal\u0101yana; having approached, they spoke thus to the brahman youth Assal\u0101yana:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Assal\u0101yana, this recluse Gotama lays down the purity of the four castes; you go, good Assal\u0101yana, and argue about this saying with the recluse Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth spoke thus to those brahmans:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Truly, sirs, is the recluse Gotama a speaker on <i>Dhamma<\/i> but speakers on <i>Dhamma<\/i> are difficult to argue with.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><i>I<\/i> am not able to argue about this saying with the recluse Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time these brahmans spoke thus to the brahman youth Assal\u0101yana:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Assal\u0101yana, this recluse Gotama lays down the purity of the four castes; you go, good Assal\u0101yana, and argue about this saying with the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A wanderer&#8217;s (life) is led by the good Assal\u0101yana.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth spoke thus to to those brahmans:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Truly, sirs, is the recluse Gotama a speaker on <i>Dhamma<\/i> but speakers on <i>Dhamma<\/i> are difficult to argue with.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><i>I<\/i> am not able to argue about this saying with the recluse Gotama.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg341\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[341]<\/b><\/span><\/a> And a third time these brahmans spoke thus to the brahman youth Assal\u0101yana:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Assal\u0101yana, this recluse Gotama lays down the purity of the four castes; you go, good Assal\u0101yana, and argue about this saying with the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A wanderer&#8217;s life is led by the good Assal\u0101yana.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let not the good Assal\u0101yana be defeated in a defeat without resistance.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth spoke thus to those brahmans:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Sirs, truly the recluse Gotama is a speaker on <i>Dhamma<\/i> but speakers on <i>Dhamma<\/i> are difficult to argue with.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><i>I<\/i> am not able to argue about this saying with the recluse Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">All the same, I will go at the bidding of the reverend ones.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth together with a large concourse of brahmans approached the Lord; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Lord; having conversed in a friendly and courteous way, he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance, Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, brahmans speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste, all other castes are low; only brahmans form the fair caste, all other castes are dark; only brahmans are pure, not non-brahmans; only brahmans are own sons of Brahm\u0101, born of his mouth, born of Brahm\u0101, formed by Brahm\u0101, heirs to Brahm\u0101.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What does the good Gotama say about this?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But, Assal\u0101yana, brahman wives of brahmans are known<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> to have their seasons and to conceive and to give birth and to give suck.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Yet these brahmans, born of woman like everyone else, speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; heirs to Brahm\u0101.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Although the good Gotama speaks thus, yet brahmans still consider it thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans &#8230; heirs to Brahm\u0101.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Have you heard that in Yona<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and Kamboja<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and other adjacent districts there are only two castes, the master and the slave?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And that having been <a id=\"pg342\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[342]<\/b><\/span><\/a> a master one becomes a slave; having been a slave one becomes a master?&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, I have heard this, sir.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In Yona and Kamboja &#8230; having been a slave one becomes a master.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;In reference to this then, Assal\u0101yana, on what strength and authority do brahmans speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; heirs of Brahm\u0101&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Although the good Gotama speaks thus, yet brahmans still consider it thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; heirs to Brahm\u0101.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a noble made onslaught on creatures, took what had not been given, wrongly enjoyed pleasures of the senses, were a liar, of slanderous speech, of harsh speech, a gossip, covetous, malevolent in mind, of wrong view &#8211; would only he at the breaking up of the body after dying arise in the sorrowful way, the bad bourn, the Downfall, Niraya Hell, and not a brahman?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Nor yet a merchant?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And would a worker if he made onslaught on creatures &#8230; were &#8230; of wrong view &#8211; would he at the breaking up of the body after dying, arise in the sorrowful way &#8230; Niraya Hell, and not a brahman?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This is not so, good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a noble, good Gotama, made onslaught on creatures, took what had not been given &#8230; at the breaking up of the body after dying he would arise in &#8230; Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And so would a brahman, good Gotama, and so would a merchant, good Gotama, and so would a worker, good Gotama &#8211; so good Gotama, if they made onslaught on creatures, took what had not been given &#8230; were &#8230; of wrong view, all the four castes at the breaking up of the body after dying would arise in the sorrowful way, the bad bourn, the Downfall, Niraya Hell.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;In reference to this then, Assal\u0101yana, on what strength and authority do brahmans speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; heirs to Brahm\u0101.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a brahman <a id=\"pg343\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[343]<\/b><\/span><\/a> refrained from onslaught on creatures, from taking what had not been given, from wrong enjoyment of the sense-pleasures, from being a liar, from slanderous speech, from harsh speech, from being a gossip, were not covetous, were not benevolent in mind and of right view &#8211; would only he at the breaking up of the body after dying arise in a good bourn, a heaven world, and not a noble, nor a merchant, nor a worker?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;That is not so, good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a noble refrained from onslaught on creatures &#8230; were benevolent in mind and of right view, at the breaking up of the body after dying he would arise in a good bourn, a heaven world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And so would a brahman, good Gotama, and so would a merchant, good Gotama, and so would a worker, good Gotama &#8211; so, good Gotama, if they refrained from onslaught on creatures, from taking what had not been given &#8230; were benevolent in mind and of right view, all the four castes at the breaking up of the body after dying would arise in a good bourn, a heaven world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;In reference to this then, Assal\u0101yana, on what strength and authority do brahmans speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; and also a brahman, good Gotama, and also a merchant, good Gotama, and also a worker, good Gotama &#8211; so, good Gotama, on this supposition all the four castes are capable of developing a mind of friendliness that is without enmity, without malevolence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;In reference to this then, Assal\u0101yana, on what strength and authority do brahmans speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; and let those who are of noble, priestly and royal families, bringing an upper piece of fire-stick<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> of teak<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> or s\u0101l or of a sweet-scented tree<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> or of sandal or lotus, light a fire and get it to give out heat.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But let the good sirs come; and let those who are from a despised family, a trapper family, a bamboo-plaiter family, a cartwright family, a scavenger family,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> bringing an upper piece of fire-stick from a dog&#8217;s trough or a pig&#8217;s trough or from a trough for dyeing or dry sticks from castor-oil shrub, light a fire and get it to give out heat.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Is the fire that is lit and the heat that is got by someone &#8211; no matter whether he be from a noble, priestly or royal family, and no matter whether he bring an upper piece of fire-stick of teak or s\u0101l or of a sweet-scented tree or of sandal or lotus &#8211; <a id=\"pg345\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[345]<\/b><\/span><\/a> is it a fire that has flame and hue and brightness<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and, being this fire, is it able to serve the purposes of a fire?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But is the fire that is lit and the heat that is got by someone &#8211; no matter whether he be from a despised family, a trapper family, a bamboo-plaiter family, a cartwright family, a scavenger family, and no matter whether he bring an upper piece of fire-stick from a dog&#8217;s trough or a pig&#8217;s trough or from a trough for dyeing or dry sticks from a castor-oil shrub &#8211; is it a fire that has neither flame nor hue nor brightness and, being this fire, is it unable to serve the purposes of a fire?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;That is not so, good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whoever from a noble, priestly or royal family, bringing an upper piece of fire-stick of teak or s\u0101l or of a sweet-scented tree or of sandal or lotus, lights a fire and gets it to give out heat &#8211; heirs to Brahm\u0101.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose a noble youth were to consort with a brahman girl and as a result a son were born to them.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Would that son of the noble youth and the brahman girl be like his mother and also like his father, and should he be called &#8216;noble&#8217; and also &#8216;brahman&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Whatever son, good Gotama, were born to a noble youth with a brahman girl, he would be like his mother and also like his father, and he should be called &#8216;noble&#8217; and also &#8216;brahman.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg346\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[346]<\/b><\/span><\/a> &#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Suppose a brahman youth were to consort with a noble girl and as a result at a son<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> were born to them.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Would that son &#8230; and also &#8216;ass&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Because of its crossed birth,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> good Gotama, it is a mule.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This good Gotama, is a difference that I see for it, but elsewhere, for the others, I see no difference at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There might be two brahman youths here, uterine brothers, the one skilled (in the Vedas), educated (in them), the other unskilled, uneducated.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">To which of these would brahmans first serve offerings for the dead<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> or cereals or oblations or meals for guests?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, brahmans would first serve offerings for the dead or cereals or oblations or meals for guests to that brahman youth who is skilled (in the Vedas), educated (in them).<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For, good Gotama, what great fruit could there be of a gift to an unskilled, uneducated (person)?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, Assal\u0101yana?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There might be two brahman youths here, uterine brothers, the one skilled (in the Vedas), educated (in them), but of bad moral habit of evil character, and the other not skilled, uneducated, but of moral habit, lovely in character.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">To which of these would brahmans first serve offerings for the dead &#8230; or meals for guests?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Good Gotama, brahmans would first serve offerings for the dead &#8230; or meals for guests to that brahman youth who is not skilled (in the Vedas), uneducated (in them), but who is of moral habit, lovely <a id=\"pg347\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[347]<\/b><\/span><\/a> in character.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">For, good Gotama, what great fruit could there be of a gift to (a person of) bad moral habit, of evil character?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;First you, Assal\u0101yana, went on about birth; leaving birth you went on about <i>mantras<\/i>; leaving <i>mantras<\/i> you arrived at the purity of the four castes which is just what <i>I<\/i> lay down.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, the brahman youth Assal\u0101yana sat silent, ashamed, his shoulders drooped, his face cast down, overcome with disappointment, at a loss for an answer.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord, understanding why Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth was silent, ashamed, his shoulders drooped, his face cast down, overcome with disappointment, at a loss for an answer, spoke thus to Assal\u0101yana the brahman youth:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Once upon a time,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> Assal\u0101yana, while seven brahman seers were living in leaf huts in a stretch of forest a pernicious view like this arose in them:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Only brahmans form the best caste, all other castes are low &#8230; heirs to Brahm\u0101.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And Assal\u0101yana, the seer Asita Devala<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn22\" href=\"#n22\">22<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> heard:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Indeed seven brahman seers are living in leaf huts in a stretch of forest and a pernicious view like this has arisen in them:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Only brahmans form the best caste &#8230; heirs to Brahm\u0101.&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, Assal\u0101yana, the seer Asita Devala, having trimmed his hair and beard, having clothed himself in a pair of crimson coloured cloths, having put on sandals with many linings<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn23\" href=\"#n23\">23<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and taking a staff made of gold, appeared in a cell in a hall<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> of the seven brahman seers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And then, Assal\u0101yana, as the seer Asita Devala was pacing up and down in the cell in a hall of the seven brahman seers, he spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Now, where have these revered brahman seers gone?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, where have these revered brahman seers gone?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, Assal\u0101yana, it occurred to the seven brahman seers:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Who is it who, while pacing up and down like a village lad<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn25\" href=\"#n25\">25<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> in a cell in a hall of the seven brahman <a id=\"pg348\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[348]<\/b><\/span><\/a> seers, speaks thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Now, where have these revered brahman seers gone?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, where have these revered brahman seers gone?&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, Assal\u0101yana, the seven brahman seers put a curse on the seer Asita Devala, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Become a vile cinder.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn26\" href=\"#n26\">26<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, Assal\u0101yana, the more the seven brahman seers cursed the seer Asita Devala, the more lovely became the seer Asita Devala, the more good to look upon and the more charming.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, Assal\u0101yana, it occurred to the seven brahman seers:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Vain is austerity<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn27\" href=\"#n27\">27<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> for us, fruitless the Brahma-faring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Formerly when we put a curse on anyone, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Become a vile cinder&#8217;, he became as a cinder; but the more we put a curse on this one the more lovely he becomes, the more good to look upon, the more charming.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Austerity is not vain for the revered ones, nor fruitless the Brahma-faring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, revered sirs, please get rid of your misapprehension about me.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will get rid of whatever misapprehension there is.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But who is the revered sir?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Is the seer Asita Devala known to the revered sirs?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, sir.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I, sirs, am he.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, Assal\u0101yana, the seven brahman seers approached the seer Asita Devala in order to honour him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, Assal\u0101yana, the seer Asita Devala spake thus to those seven brahman seers:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I have heard this, good sirs:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While seven brahman seers were living in leaf huts in a stretch of forest a pernicious view like this arose in them:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Only brahmans form the best caste, all other castes are low; only brahmans form the fair caste, all other castes are dark; only brahmans are pure, not non-brahmans; only brahmans are own sons of Brahm\u0101, born of his mouth, born of Brahm\u0101, formed by Brahm\u0101, heirs to Brahm\u0101.&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Yes, sir.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;But do you, sirs, know whether their mothers consorted only with brahmans, not with non-brahmans?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;No, sir.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;And do you, sirs, know whether their mothers&#8217; mothers back through seven generations consorted only with brahmans, not with non-brahmans?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg349\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[349]<\/b><\/span><\/a> &#8216;No, sir.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;And do you, sirs, know whether their fathers consorted only with brahman women, not with non-brahman women?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;No, sir.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;And do you, sirs, know whether their fathers&#8217; fathers back through seven generations consorted only with brahman women, not non-brahman women?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;No, sir.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;But do you, sirs, know how there is conception?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We do know, sir, how there is conception.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is here a coitus of the parents,<br\/>it is the mother&#8217;s season<br\/>and the <i>gandhabba<\/i> is present;<br\/>it is on the conjunction of these three things<br\/>that there is conception.&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn28\" href=\"#n28\">28<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;But do you, sirs, know whether that <i>gandhabba<\/i> is a noble or brahman or merchant or worker?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We do not know, sir, whether that <i>gandhabba<\/i> is a noble or a brahman or a merchant or a worker.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This being so, do you know, sirs, who you are?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This being so, sir, we do not know who we are.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Assal\u0101yana, these seven so called brahman seers, on being questioned, cross-questioned and pressed for an answer by the seer Asita Devala concerning their own claims to lineage were not able to explain.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So how can you, on being questioned, cross-questioned and pressed for an answer by me now explain your own claims to lineage &#8211;
