Pokkharas\u0101ti,<br\/>the brahman J\u0101\u1e47usso\u1e47i,<br\/>the brahman Todeyya,<br\/>and other wealthy and distinguished brahmans.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then as the brahman youths V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha and Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja were pacing up and down<br\/>and roaming about on foot,<br\/>this chance conversation arose:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;How is one a brahman?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The brahman youth Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If one is of pure birth<br\/>on both the mother&#8217;s and the father&#8217;s side,<br\/><a id=\"pg380\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[380]<\/b><\/span><\/a> and is of pure descent<br\/>back through seven generations,<br\/>unchallenged and irreproachable in respect of birth,<br\/>then is one a brahman.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The brahman youth V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If one is of moral habit<br\/>and right practice,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>then is one a brahman.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But neither was Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja the brahman youth<br\/>able to convince V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha the brahman youth,<br\/>nor was V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha the brahman youth<br\/>able to convince Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja the brahman youth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha the brahman youth<br\/>spoke thus to Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja the brahman youth:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja, this recluse Gotama,<br\/>the son of the Sakyans,<br\/>gone forth from a Sakyan clan,<br\/>is staying near Icch\u0101na\u1e45kala,<br\/>in a forest glade near Icch\u0101na\u1e45kala.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a lovely report has gone abroad about the recluse Gotama thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is indeed Lord,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One,<br\/>endowed with knowledge and (right) conduct,<br\/>Well-farer,<br\/>knower of the worlds,<br\/>the matchless charioteer of men to be tamed,<br\/>teacher of devas and mankind,<br\/>the Awakened One,<br\/>the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Let us go, good Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja;<br\/>we will approach the recluse Gotama,<br\/>and having approached<br\/>we will ask the recluse Gotama about this matter,<br\/>and as the recluse Gotama explains it to us,<br\/>so will we accept it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, sir,&#8221;<br\/>the brahman youth Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja answered<br\/>the brahman youth V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the brahman youths V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha<br\/>and Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja<br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached,<br\/>they exchanged greetings with the Lord;<br\/>having conversed in a friendly and courteous way,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha the brahman youth<br\/>addressed the Lord in these verses:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;Both of us have been recognised as<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and we claim to be three-Veda-(men),<br\/>I, of Pokkharas\u0101ti (a pupil), this brahman youth of T\u0101rukkha.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>In what is pointed out of the three Vedas &#8211; in that we are whole:<br\/>We are versed in the <i>pada-p\u0101\u1e6dha,<\/i><span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> grammarians, in speaking we are like teachers.<br\/><a id=\"pg381\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[381]<\/b><\/span><\/a>There is contention between us, Gotama, in respect of birth:<br\/>&#8216;By birth one is a brahman&#8217; &#8211; so speaks Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja;<br\/>But I say, &#8216;By doing&#8217;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211; let the Visioned One know it thus.<br\/>As we are each unable to convince the other,<br\/>We come to ask the revered Self-Awakened One, widely famed.<br\/>As people salute the moon when it has come to the full,<br\/>So, in the world, honouring him, do they thus praise Gotama.<br\/>We are asking Gotama, the Eye risen in the world:<br\/>Is one by birth a brahman or does one (so) become by doing?<br\/>Tell us this who know not, that a brahman we may know.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Gotama:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8220;V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha, I will expound<br\/>To you in gradual and very truth<br\/>Division in the kinds<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> of living things;<br\/>For kinds divide.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Behold the grass and trees!<br\/>They reason not, yet they possess the mark<br\/>After their kind, for kinds indeed divide.<br\/>Consider then the beetles, moths and ants:<br\/>They after their kind too possess the mark<br\/>After their kind, for kinds indeed divide.<br\/>And so four-footed creatures, great and small<br\/>They after their kind too possess the mark<br\/>After their kind, for kinds indeed divide.<br\/>The reptiles, snakes, the long-backed animals<br\/>They after their kind too possess the mark<br\/>After their kind, for kinds indeed divide.<br\/><a id=\"pg382\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[382]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Fish and pond-feeders, water-denizens<br\/>They after their kind too possess the mark<br\/>After their kind, for kinds indeed divide.<br\/>Birds and the winged creatures, fowls o&#8217; the air,<br\/>They after their kind all possess the mark<br\/>For kinds indeed divide. Each after his kind bears<br\/>His mark; in man there is not manifold.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Not in the hair or head or ears or eyes,<br\/>Not in the mouth or nose or lips or brows,<br\/>Not in the throat, hips, belly or the back,<br\/>Not in the rump, sex-organs or the breast,<br\/>Not in the hands or feet, fingers or nails,<br\/>Not in the legs or thighs, colour or voice,<br\/>Is mark that forms his kind as in all else.<br\/>Nothing unique<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is in men&#8217;s bodies found:<br\/>The difference in men is nominal.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">The man forsooth who earns his livelihood<br\/>By minding cows and fields, know, V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha,<br\/>He is a farmer, not a brahmana!<br\/>Who works at diverse crafts, know him to be<br\/>An artisan and not a brahmana!<br\/>Who plies a trade for livelihood, know him<br\/>To be a trader, not a brahmana!<br\/>Who toils in service for another man,<br\/>Know as a servant, not a brahmana!<br\/>Who lives by taking things not giv&#8217;n, know him<br\/>To be a thief and not a brahmana!<br\/>Who lives indeed by archery, know him<br\/>To be a soldier, not a brahmana!<br\/>Who lives by priestly craft, know him to be<br\/>A celebrant and not a brahmana!<br\/>And he who owns the village, countryside,<br\/>Know him as a rajah and no brahmana!<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">I call none &#8216;brahman&#8217; from mere parentage,<br\/>Tho&#8217; he be &#8216;Sir&#8217;-ed and wealthy too: the man<br\/>Of naught, who grasps not, brahman him I call!<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who cuts all fetters, in2\">Who, blameless, bears blows, bonds, abuse, well armed<br\/>With strength of patience, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Him wrathless, spotless, moral, free of pride,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Last body bearing, tamed, I brahman call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">As water on a leaf, as seed on awl,<br\/>Who to lust clings not, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who knows here now that ill for self is quenched,<br\/>Burden-dropped,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> boundless, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Him of deep wisdom, sage, skilled in all ways,<br\/>Won to the goal supreme, I brahman call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who not with homeless nor with householder sorts,<br\/>Frugal, resort-less, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who rod lays by &#8216;gainst weak and strong, slays not,<br\/>To slay incites none, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Him cool<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> mid violence, mid foes no foe,<br\/>Mid grasping grasping not, I brahman call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">From whom hate, passion, pride, and guile have fall&#8217;n,<br\/>As seed from needle, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who teaches gently, utters words of truth,<br\/>And none offendeth, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who here takes naught, long, short, small, large, good, bad,<br\/>Nothing not given, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">In whom no hopes are found for here or yon,<br\/>Fetter-free, hope-free, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">In whom no grooves are found, gone doubt, who knows,<br\/>Won to in2\">Who hath this bog, false, painful round, passed o&#8217;er,<br\/>Crossed and yon-fared, a muser, doubt gone, still,<br\/>Cool<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> in detachment, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who pleasures here forsakes and homeless fares,<br\/>Lust and &#8216;life&#8217;<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> ended, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who craving here forsakes and homeless fares,<br\/>Craving, &#8216;life&#8217;<span class=\"f3\"><sup>[<a href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> ended, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\"><a id=\"snp.iii.9.48\">Him<\/a> rid of human yoke, passed deva-yoke,<br\/>Fetterless, free of yokes, I brahman call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Him rid of likes and dislikes, cool,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> detached,<br\/>Vigorous, world-conqueror, I brahman call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who knows of all men the rise and fall, uncaught,<br\/>Awake, well-faring, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Whose lot men, devas, gandharvas know not,<br\/>Cankerless, worthy,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn22\" href=\"#n22\">22<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Him for whom present, future, past, holds naught,<br\/>Who grasps not, man-of-naught, I brahman call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">The bull, elect, the hero, victor, sage,<br\/>Awake, still, washen, brahman him I call.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\"><a id=\"v647\"><span world holds as &#8216;name&#8217; and &#8216;lineage&#8217;<br\/>Is indeed nominal, terms risen here<br\/>And there by popular opinion,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Adhered to long, views of the ignorant!<br\/>The ignorant declare: &#8216;A brahman is<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\"><a id=\"v650\"><span class=\"f2 c\"><b>[650]<\/b><\/span><\/a> By birth.&#8217; None is by birth a brahman; none<br\/>By birth no brahmana; by deeds is one<br\/>A brahmana, by deeds no brahmana!<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\"><a id=\"pg385\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[385]<\/b><\/span><\/a> By deeds one is a farmer and by deeds<br\/>An artisan, by deeds a trader too;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">By deeds one is a servant and a thief,<br\/>By deeds a soldier and a celebrant,<br\/>And even so a rajah is by deeds.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">&#8216;Tis thus in truth the wise perceive the deed,<br\/>Seers of origin by way of cause,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn23\" href=\"#n23\">23<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>Men expert in result of deeds. The world<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Revolves by deeds, mankind revolves by deeds;<br\/>As pin holds fast the rolling chariot&#8217;s wheel,<br\/>So beings are in bondage held by deeds.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">A brahman one becomes by Brahma-faring,<br\/>By temperance, austerity, restraint:<br\/>This is indeed supreme for brahmanhood.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 in2\">Who by three Vedas is accomplished,<br\/>With no more coming here, and man-of-calm,<br\/>Know thou, V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha, even thus of him:<br\/>He is of knowers Sakka<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and Brahm\u0101!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said, the brahman youths V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha and Bh\u0101radv\u0101ja spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is wonderful, good Gotama,<br\/>wonderful, good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is as if, good Gotama,<br\/>one might set upright what had been upset,<br\/>or might disclose what was covered,<br\/>or point out the way<br\/>to one who had gone astray,<br\/>or might bring an oil-lamp into the darkness<br\/>so that those with vision might see material shapes &#8211;<br\/>even so is <i>Dhamma<\/i> made clear<br\/>in many a figure by the good Gotama.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">We are going to the revered Gotama for refuge,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn25\" href=\"#n25\">25<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and to <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>and to the Order of monks.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">May the good Gotama accept us<br\/>as lay-disciples,<br\/>going for refuge from today forth<br\/>for as long as life lasts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 ctr\">Discourse to V\u0101se\u1e6d\u1e6dha<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"demi\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n1\" href=\"#fn1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup> The text of this Discourse is not given in <i>M.<\/i> ii.
