class=\"f2\"><b>EARD<\/b><\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At one time the Lord was staying near <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#savatthi\">S\u0101vatth\u012b<\/a><br\/>in the Jeta Grove in An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika&#8217;s monastery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered One,&#8221; these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks, these are the three marks of a fool,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>signs of a fool,<br\/>stamps of a fool.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What three?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monks, a fool is one thinking wrong thoughts,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>speaking wrong words,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>a doer of deeds wrongly done.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, monks, a fool were not one thinking wrong thoughts,<br\/>speaking wrong words,<br\/>and a doer of deeds wrongly done,<br\/>how could the wise know of him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This fine fellow is a fool,<br\/>not a true man?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is because, monks, a fool is one thinking wrong thoughts,<br\/>speaking wrong words,<br\/>and a doer of deeds wrongly done,<br\/>that the wise know of him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This fine fellow is a fool,<br\/>not a true man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, he who is a fool<br\/>experiences a threefold anguish and dejection<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, monks, a fool is sitting down<br\/>in an assembly room<br\/>or by a carriage-road<br\/>or at a cross-roads<br\/>and if the people there held appropriate suitable talk about him<br\/>and if, monks, the fool were one who made onslaught on creatures,<br\/>were a taker of what had not been given,<br\/>one who behaved wrongly in regard to sense-pleasures,<br\/>a liar,<br\/>and one given up to occasions for sloth<br\/>consequent upon (drinking) arrack,<br\/>toddy<br\/>and strong liquor,<br\/>and if, monks, it then occurs to that fool:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;These people are holding an appropriate suitable talk about me,<br\/>for these states exist in me<br\/>and I engage in<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> these states,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">this, monks, is the first (kind of) anguish and dejection<br\/>that the fool experiences<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, a fool sees kings<br\/>who, having arrested a thief,<br\/>an evil-doer,<br\/>are meting out various punishments:<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>they lash <a id=\"pg210\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[210]<\/b><\/span><\/a> him with whips,<br\/>and they lash him with canes,<br\/>and they lash him with (birch) rods,<br\/>and they cut off his hand,<br\/>and they cut off his foot,<br\/>and they cut off his hand and foot,<br\/>and they cut off his his ear,<br\/>and they cut off his his nose,<br\/>and they cut off his his ear and nose,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;gruel-pot&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;shell-tonsure&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;R\u0101hu&#8217;s mouth&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;fire-garland&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;flaming hand&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;hay-twist&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;bark-dress&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;antelope&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;flesh-hooking&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;disc-slice&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;pickling process&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;circling the pin&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;straw-mattress,&#8217;<br\/>and they spray him with burning oil,<br\/>give him as food to the dogs,<br\/>impale him alive on stakes,<br\/>and they decapitate him with a sword.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereupon, monks, it occurs to the fool:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Because of such and such evil deeds<br\/>kings, having arrested a thief,<br\/>an evil-doer,<br\/>mete out various punishments:<br\/>they lash him with engage in these states.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So if kings should know about me,<br\/>they might have me arrested too,<br\/>and mete out various punishments:<br\/>they might lash me with whips,<br\/>they might lash me with canes,<br\/>they might lash me with (birch) rods,<br\/>they might cut off my hand,<br\/>they might cut off my foot,<br\/>they might cut off my hand and foot,<br\/>they might cut off my my ear,<br\/>they might cut off my my nose,<br\/>they might cut off my his ear and nose,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;gruel-pot&#8217; punishment,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;shell-tonsure&#8217; punishment,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;R\u0101hu&#8217;s mouth&#8217; punishment,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;fire-garland&#8217; punishment,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;flaming hand&#8217; punishment,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;hay-twist&#8217; punishment,<br\/>they might give me the &#8216;bark-dress&#8217; &#8216;straw-mattress,&#8217;<br\/>they might spray me with burning oil,<br\/>give me as food to the dogs,<br\/>impale me alive on stakes,<br\/>and they decapitate me with a sword.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, monks, is the second (kind&#8217; of) anguish and dejection<br\/>that the fool experiences<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks,<br\/>while a fool is on a chair<br\/>or bed<br\/>or lying on the ground,<br\/>at such a time those evil deeds<br\/>that he has formerly wrongly done<br\/>by body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought<br\/>rest on him,<br\/>lie on him,<br\/>settle on him.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as at eventide<br\/>the shadows of the great mountain peaks<br\/>rest,<br\/>lie<br\/>and settle on the earth,<br\/>so, monks, do these evil deeds<br\/>that the fool has formerly wrongly done<br\/>by body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought<br\/>rest,<br\/>lie<br\/>and settle on him<br\/>as he is on a chair<br\/>or bed<br\/>or lying on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereupon, monks, it occurs thus to the fool:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Indeed what is lovely<br\/>has not been done by me,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>what is skilled<br\/>has not been done,<br\/>no refuge against fearful (consequences)<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>has been made,<br\/>evil has been done,<br\/>cruelty has been done,<br\/>violence has been done.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Insofar as there is a bourn<br\/>for those who have not done what is lovely,<br\/>have not done what is skilled,<br\/>have not made a refuge against fearful (consequences),<br\/>who have done evil, cruelty and violence,<br\/>to that bourn I am going hereafter.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He grieves,<br\/>mourns,<br\/>laments,<br\/>beats his breast,<br\/>wails<br\/>and falls into disillusionment.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, <a id=\"pg211\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[211]<\/b><\/span><\/a> monks, is the third (kind of) anguish and dejection<br\/>that the fool experiences<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, monks,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> who is a fool,<br\/>having fared wrongly in body,<br\/>having fared wrongly in speech,<br\/>having fared wrongly in thought,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in the sorrowful ways,<br\/>the bad bourn,<br\/>the Downfall,<br\/>Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Anyone, monks, speaking rightly of him<br\/>would say he is thoroughly undesirable,<br\/>thoroughly disagreeable,<br\/>thoroughly unpleasant,<br\/>as in speaking rightly of Niraya Hell<br\/>he would say it is thoroughly undesirable,<br\/>thoroughly disagreeable,<br\/>thoroughly unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monks,<br\/>even a simile is not easy,<br\/>so many are the anguishes of Niraya Hell.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>a certain monk spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But is it possible<br\/>to make a simile for me, revered sir?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is possible, monk,&#8221;<br\/>the Lord said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is as though, monk,<br\/>men should arrest a thief,<br\/>an evil-doer,<br\/>and bring him before the king,<br\/>with the words:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;This, sire, is a thief,<br\/>an evil-doer to you.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Decree for him<br\/>whatever punishment you wish,&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">and the king should speak thus concerning him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Go along, good sirs,<br\/>stab<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> this man early in the morning<br\/>with a hundred spears.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And early in the morning<br\/>they would stab him with a hundred spears.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then at midday the king would speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;My good fellows,<br\/>how is that man?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;He is still alive, sire.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the king would speak thus concerning him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Go along, good sirs,<br\/>stab this man at midday<br\/>with a hundred spears.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And at midday they would stab him with a hundred spears.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then towards evening<br\/>the king would speak thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;My good fellows,<br\/>how is that man?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;He is still alive, sire.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the king would speak thus concerning him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Go along, good sirs,<br\/>stab this man towards evening<br\/>with a hundred spears.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And towards evening<br\/>they would stab him with a hundred spears.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What do you think about this, monks,<br\/>would not that man,<br\/>while he was being stabbed with three hundred spears,<br\/>from that source experience anguish and dejection?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;That man, revered sir,<br\/>being stabbed with only one spear<br\/>from that source would experience anguish and dejection.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">How much more then<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>with three hundred spears?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg212\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[212]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Then the Lord,<br\/>having picked up a small stone the size of his hand,<br\/>addressed the monks,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, monks?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, which is the greater,<br\/>this small stone,<br\/>the size of my hand,<br\/>that I have picked up,<br\/>or the Himalaya,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn13\" href=\"#n13\">13<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> lord of mountains?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This small stone, revered sir,<br\/>that the Lord picked up,<br\/>the size of his hand,<br\/>is insignificant;<br\/>compared with the Himalaya, lord of mountains,<br\/>it does not count,<br\/>it does not amount even to an infinitesimal fraction (of it),<br\/>it cannot even be compared (with it).&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Even so, monks, that anguish and dejection<br\/>that that man experiences<br\/>while he is being stabbed with three hundred spears,<br\/>compared with the anguish of Niraya Hell<br\/>does not count,<br\/>it does not amount even to an infinitesimal fraction (of it),<br\/>it cannot even be compared (with it).<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>subject him to what is called the fivefold pinion.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">They drive a red-hot iron stake<br\/>through each hand<br\/>and each foot<br\/>and a red-hot iron stake<br\/>through the middle of his breast.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereat he feels feelings that are painful,<br\/>sharp,<br\/>severe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But he does not do his time<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>until he makes an end of that evil deed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>lay him down<br\/>and plane him with adzes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereat he feels feelings that are painful,<br\/>sharp,<br\/>severe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But he does not do his time<br\/>until he makes an end of that evil deed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>place him feet up<br\/>and head down<br\/>and plane him with razors.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereat he feels feelings that are painful,<br\/>sharp,<br\/>severe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But he does not do his time<br\/>until he makes an end of that evil deed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>bind him to a chariot<br\/>and drive him up and down<br\/>over ground that is burning,<br\/>aflame,<br\/>ablaze.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereat he feels feelings that are painful,<br\/>sharp,<br\/>severe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But he does not do his time<br\/>until he makes an end of that evil deed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>push him up and down<br\/>a great mountain slope<br\/>of glowing cinders,<br\/>burning,<br\/>aflame,<br\/>ablaze.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereat he feels feelings that are painful,<br\/>sharp,<br\/>severe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But he does not do his time<br\/>until he makes an end of that evil deed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>take him,<br\/>feet up and head down,<br\/>and plunge him into a glowing brazen cauldron,<br\/>burning,<br\/>aflame,<br\/>ablaze.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There he is boiled<br\/>and rises to the surface with the <a id=\"pg213\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[213]<\/b><\/span><\/a> scum.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Boiling there<br\/>and rising to the surface with the scum,<br\/>he comes up once<br\/>and goes down once<br\/>and once he goes across.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereat he feels feelings that are painful,<br\/>sharp,<br\/>severe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But he does not do his time<br\/>until he makes an end of that evil deed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the guardians of Niraya Hell<br\/>toss him into the Great Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now, monks, this Great Niraya Hell<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>(is so described):<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t      <p class=\"f4 in2\">Four-cornered and with four gates,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>It is divided into equal portions,<br\/>Encircled by an iron wall, with a roof of iron above;<br\/>Its incandescent floor is made of glowing iron;<br\/>All round it stands a hundred yojanas square.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In many a disquisition could I, monks,<br\/>talk a talk about Niraya Hell,<br\/>but it is not easy to describe in full,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> monks,<br\/>so many are the anguishes of Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are, monks, animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>that are grass-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p grass-eaters?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Horses,<br\/>cattle,<br\/>asses,<br\/>sheep,<br\/>deer,<br\/>and whatever other animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>there are that are grass-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, that fool<br\/>who formerly enjoyed tastes here,<br\/>having done evil deeds here,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in companionship<br\/>with those beings that are grass-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are, monks, animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>that are dung-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having smelt the smell of dung from afar<br\/>they run up,<br\/>thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will eat here,<br\/>we will eat here.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is like brahmans<br\/>who run up at the smell of a sacrifice,<br\/>thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will eat here,<br\/>we will eat here&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">even so, monks, there are animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>that are dung-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These having smelt the smell of dung from afar<br\/>run up,<br\/>thinking:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;We will eat here,<br\/>we will eat here.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And which, monks arc the animals,<br\/>the breathing creatures<br\/>that are dung-eaters?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Cocks,<br\/>swine,<br\/>dogs,<br\/>jackals,<br\/>and whatever other animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>there are<br\/>that are dung-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, that fool<br\/>who formerly enjoyed tastes here,<br\/><a id=\"pg214\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[214]<\/b><\/span><\/a> having done evil deeds here,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in companionship<br\/>with those beings that are dung-eaters.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are, monks, animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>that are born in the dark,<br\/>grow old in the dark<br\/>and die in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And which, monks, are the animals,<br\/>the breathing creatures<br\/>that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die<br\/>in the dark?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Beetles,<br\/>maggots,<br\/>earth-worms<br\/>and whatever other animals,<br\/>breathing creatures there are<br\/>that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die<br\/>in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, that fool<br\/>who formerly enjoyed tastes here<br\/>having done evil deeds here,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in companionship<br\/>with those beings that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are, monks, animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>that are born in water,<br\/>grow old in water,<br\/>die in water.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And which, monks, are the animals,<br\/>the breathing creatures<br\/>that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die in water?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Fishes,<br\/>turtles,<br\/>crocodiles<br\/>and whatever other animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>there are<br\/>that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die<br\/>in water.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, that fool<br\/>who formerly enjoyed tastes here<br\/>having done evil deeds here,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in companionship<br\/>with those beings that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die<br\/>in water.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are, monks, animals,<br\/>breathing creatures<br\/>that are born in filth,<br\/>grow old in filth,<br\/>die in filth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And which, monks, are the animals,<br\/>the breathing creatures<br\/>that are born,<br\/>grow old<br\/>and die in filth?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Those beings, monks,<br\/>that are born in rotting fish<br\/>or that grow old in rotting fish<br\/>or that die in rotting fish;<br\/>that are born in rotting carcases<br\/>or that grow old in rotting carcases<br\/>or that die in rotting carcases;<br\/>that are born in rotting rice<br\/>or that grow old in rotting rice<br\/>or that die in rotting rice;<br\/>that are born in a pool at the entrance to a village<br\/>or that grow old in a pool at the entrance to a village<br\/>or that die in a pool at the entrance to a village;<br\/>that are born in a dirty pool near a village<br\/>or that grow old in a dirty pool near a village<br\/>or that die in a dirty pool near a village.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, that fool who formerly enjoyed tastes here,<br\/>having done evil deeds here,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in companionship<br\/>with those beings that are born in filth,<br\/>grow old in filth,<br\/>die in filth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In many a disquisition could I, monks,<br\/>talk a talk about animal birth,<br\/>but it is not easy to describe in full, monks,<br\/>so many are the anguishes of animal birth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is like a man<br\/>who might throw a yoke with one hole<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>into the sea.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">An easterly wind might take it westwards,<br\/>a westerly wind might take it eastwards,<br\/>a northerly wind might take it southwards,<br\/>a southerly wind might take it northwards.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There might be <a id=\"pg215\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[215]<\/b><\/span><\/a> a blind turtle there<br\/>who came to the surface<br\/>once in a hundred years.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What do you think about this, monks?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Could that blind turtle<br\/>push his neck through that one hole in the yoke?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If at all,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn22\" href=\"#n22\">22<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> revered sir,<br\/>then only once in a very long while.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Sooner or later, monks,<br\/>could the blind turtle<br\/>push his neck through the one hole in the yoke;<br\/>more difficult than that,<br\/>do I say, monks,<br\/>is human status once again<br\/>for the fool who has gone to the Downfall.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is the cause of that?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, there is no <i>Dhamma<\/i>-faring there,<br\/>no even-faring,<br\/>no doing of what is skilled,<br\/>no doing of what is good.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, there is devouring of one another there<br\/>and feeding on the weak.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn23\" href=\"#n23\">23<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, if some time or other<br\/>once in a very long while<br\/>that fool came to human status (again),<br\/>he would be born into those families that are low;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>a family of low caste<br\/>or a family of hunters<br\/>or a family of bamboo-plaiters<br\/>or a family of cartwrights<br\/>or a family of refuse-scavengers,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn25\" href=\"#n25\">25<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>in such a family as is needy,<br\/>without enough to drink<br\/>or to eat,<br\/>where a covering for the back<br\/>is with difficulty obtained.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Moreover, he would be ill-favoured,<br\/>ugly,<br\/>dwarfish,<br\/>sickly,<br\/>blind<br\/>or deformed<br\/>or lame<br\/>or paralysed;<br\/>he would be unable to get food,<br\/>drink,<br\/>clothes,<br\/>vehicles,<br\/>garlands,<br\/>scents and perfumes,<br\/>bed,<br\/>dwelling,<br\/>and lights;<br\/>he would fare wrongly in body,<br\/>wrongly in speech,<br\/>wrongly in thought.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Because he had fared wrongly in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>he would arise in the sorrowful ways,<br\/>a bad bourn,<br\/>the Downfall,<br\/>Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is as though a gambler<br\/>at the very first losing throw (at dice)<br\/>were to lose his son,<br\/>his wife<br\/>and all his property<br\/>and, further,<br\/>were to undergo imprisonment himself.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Insignificant, monks,<br\/>is that losing throw<br\/>by which the gambler<br\/>at the very first losing throw<br\/>were to lose his son,<br\/>his wife<br\/>and all his property<br\/>and, further,<br\/>were to undergo imprisonment himself.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Greater than this<br\/>is the losing throw<br\/>by which the fool,<br\/>having fared wrongly in body,<br\/>wrongly in speech,<br\/>wrongly in thought,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in the sorrowful ways,<br\/>the bad bourn,<br\/>the Downfall,<br\/>Niraya Hell.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, monks, is the fool&#8217;s condition,<br\/>completed in its entirety.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn26\" href=\"#n26\">26<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 ctr c\">\u00a7<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg216\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[216]<\/b><\/span><\/a> These, monks, are the three marks of a wise man,<br\/>signs of a wise man,<br\/>stamps of a wise man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What three?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monks,<br\/>a wise man is one thinking right thoughts,<br\/>speaking right words,<br\/>and a doer of deeds rightly done.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, monks, a wise man<br\/>were not one thinking right thoughts,<br\/>speaking right words,<br\/>a doer of deeds rightly done,<br\/>how could the wise know of him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This worthy man is a wise man,<br\/>a true man?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is because, monks, a wise man is one thinking right thoughts,<br\/>speaking right words,<br\/>a doer of deeds rightly done,<br\/>that the wise know of him:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This worthy man is a wise man,<br\/>a true man.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, he who is a wise man<br\/>experiences a threefold happiness and joy<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If, monks, the wise man is sitting down<br\/>in an assembly room<br\/>or by a carriage road<br\/>or at a cross-roads<br\/>and the people there held appropriate suitable talk about him,<br\/>and if, monks, the wise man<br\/>abstained from onslaught on creatures,<br\/>from taking what had not been given,<br\/>from wrong behaviour in regard to the sense-pleasures,<br\/>from lying,<br\/>from occasions for sloth<br\/>consequent upon (drinking) arrack,<br\/>toddy<br\/>and strong liquor,<br\/>and if, monks, it thereupon occurred to the wise man:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;These people are holding an appropriate suitable talk about me;<br\/>these states exist in me<br\/>and I engage in these states&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>this, monks, is the first (kind of) happiness and joy<br\/>that the wise man experiences<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, a wise man<br\/>sees kings who having arrested a thief,<br\/>an evil-doer,<br\/>are meting out various punishments:<br\/>they lash him with whips,<br\/>and they lash him with canes,<br\/>and they lash him with (birch) rods,<br\/>and they cut off his hand,<br\/>and they cut off his foot,<br\/>and they cut off his hand and foot,<br\/>and they cut off his his ear,<br\/>and they cut off his his nose,<br\/>and they cut off his his ear and nose,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;gruel-pot&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;shell-tonsure&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;R\u0101hu&#8217;s mouth&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;fire-garland&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;flaming hand&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;hay-twist&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;bark-dress&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;antelope&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;flesh-hooking&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;disc-slice&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;pickling process&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;circling the pin&#8217; punishment,<br\/>and they give him the &#8216;straw-mattress,&#8217;<br\/>and they spray him with burning oil,<br\/>give him as food to the dogs,<br\/>impale him alive on stakes,<br\/>and they decapitate him with a sword.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereupon, monks, it occurs to the wise man:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Because of such and such evil deeds<br\/>kings, having arrested a thief,<br\/>an evil-doer,<br\/>mete out various punishments:<br\/>they lash him with whips,<br\/>and they lash him with canes,<br\/>and they lash him with (birch) rods,<br\/>and they cut off his bed<br\/>or lying on the ground,<br\/>at such a time<br\/>those lovely deeds that he has formerly rightly done<br\/>by body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought<br\/>rest on him,<br\/>lie on him,<br\/>settle on him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, as at eventide the shadows of the great mountain peaks rest,<br\/>lie<br\/>and settle<br\/>on the earth,<br\/>so, monks, do those lovely deeds<br\/>that the wise man has formerly rightly done<br\/>by body,<br\/><a id=\"pg217\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[217]<\/b><\/span><\/a> speech<br\/>and thought<br\/>rest,<br\/>lie<br\/>and settle on him<br\/>as he is on a chair<br\/>or bed<br\/>or lying on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thereupon, monks, it occurs to the wise man:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Indeed what is evil<br\/>has not been done by me,<br\/>cruelty has not been done,<br\/>violence has not been done,<br\/>what is lovely has been done,<br\/>what is skilled has been done,<br\/>a refuge against fearful (consequences) has been found.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Insofar as there is a bourn<br\/>for those who have not done evil,<br\/>cruelty<br\/>or violence,<br\/>who have done what is lovely,<br\/>what is skilled,<br\/>and who have found a refuge<br\/>against fearful (consequences),<br\/>to that bourn I am going hereafter.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He does not grieve,<br\/>mourn,<br\/>lament,<br\/>beat his breast,<br\/>wail<br\/>or fall into disillusionment.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, monks, is the third (kind of) happiness and joy<br\/>that the wise man experiences<br\/>here and now.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He, monks, who is a wise man,<br\/>having fared rightly in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>arises in a good bourn,<br\/>a heaven world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Anyone, monks, speaking rightly of him<br\/>would say:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Thoroughly desirable,<br\/>thoroughly agreeable,<br\/>thoroughly pleasant,&#8217;<br\/>as in speaking rightly of heaven<br\/>he would say:<br\/>&#8216;Thoroughly desirable,<br\/>thoroughly agreeable,<br\/>thoroughly pleasant.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monks,<br\/>even a simile is not easy,<br\/>so many are the happinesses of heaven.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>a certain monk spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But is it possible, revered sir,<br\/>to make a simile?&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn27\" href=\"#n27\">27<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is possible, monk,&#8221;<br\/>the Lord said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is as though, monk,<br\/>a wheel-rolling king,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn28\" href=\"#n28\">28<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>endowed with seven Treasures<br\/>and four efficacies,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn29\" href=\"#n29\">29<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>should experience happiness and joy<br\/>from that source.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">From what seven?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monk,<br\/>when a noble anointed king<br\/>has bathed his head on an Observance day,<br\/>the fifteenth,<br\/>and has gone for the Observance<br\/>to an upper storey of his palace,<br\/>there then appears<br\/>the deva-like Treasure of the Wheel<br\/>with its nave,<br\/>its tyres<br\/>and all its thousand spokes complete.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On seeing it,<br\/>this occurs to the noble anointed king:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I have heard this,<br\/>that if a noble anointed king<br\/>has bathed his head on an Observance day,<br\/>the fifteenth,<br\/>and has gone for the Observance<br\/>to an upper storey of his palace,<br\/>and there then appears <a id=\"pg218\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[218]<\/b><\/span><\/a> the deva-like Treasure of the Wheel<br\/>with its nave,<br\/>its tyres,<br\/>and all its thousand spokes complete,<br\/>he becomes a wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">May I then be a wheel-rolling king.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn30\" href=\"#n30\">30<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> the noble anointed king<br\/>rising from his seat,<br\/>taking a ceremonial water jar in his left hand,<br\/>with his right sprinkles (water) over<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn31\" href=\"#n31\">31<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> the Treasure of the Wheel,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;May the honoured Treasure of the Wheel roll on,<br\/>may the honoured Treasure of the Wheel be all-conquering.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, the Treasure of the Wheel<br\/>rolls on towards the eastern quarter<br\/>and after it (goes) the wheel-rolling king<br\/>together with a fourfold army.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And wherever, monks, the Treasure of the Wheel stops,<br\/>there the wheel-rolling king settles down<br\/>together with the fourfold army.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks, rival kings in the eastern quarter,<br\/>having approached the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>speak conquered all the sea-girt earth,<br\/>returning to that royal city itself,<br\/>it stands as if fixed by the axle<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn33\" href=\"#n33\">33<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> to the gateway<br\/>of the wheel-rolling king&#8217;s palace,<br\/>adorning the gateway<br\/>of the wheel- <a id=\"pg219\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[219]<\/b><\/span><\/a> rolling king&#8217;s palace.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Wheel<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks,<br\/>the Treasure of the Elephant<br\/>appears to the wheel-rolling king;<br\/>it is all white,<br\/>seven-fold firm,<br\/>going through the sky by psychic potency,<br\/>an elephant-king named Uposatha.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn34\" href=\"#n34\">34<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On seeing him<br\/>the wheel-rolling king is pleased at heart<br\/>and thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Glorious indeed is an elephant-vehicle,<br\/>if he will submit to taming.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, that Treasure of an Elephant,<br\/>like a fine thoroughbred elephant<br\/>long since well tamed,<br\/>submits to taming then and there.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Once upon a time, monks,<br\/>the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>while testing that very Treasure of an Elephant,<br\/>mounted it early one morning<br\/>and it passed over the sea-girt earth<br\/>and returned to that royal city itself<br\/>in time for the morning meal.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Elephant<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks,<br\/>the Treasure of the Horse<br\/>appears to the wheel-rolling king;<br\/>it is all white,<br\/>with a head (as black as) a crow&#8217;s,<br\/>a dark mane,<br\/>going through the sky by psychic potency,<br\/>a king of horses named Valaha.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn35\" href=\"#n35\">35<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">On seeing him<br\/>the wheel-rolling king is pleased at heart<br\/>and thinks:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Glorious indeed is a horse-vehicle,<br\/>if he will submit to taming.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, that Treasure of a Horse,<br\/>like a fine thoroughbred horse<br\/>long since well tamed,<br\/>submits to taming then and there.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Once upon a time, monks,<br\/>the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>while testing that very Treasure of a Horse,<br\/>mounted it early one morning<br\/>and it passed over the sea-girt earth<br\/>and returned to that royal city itself<br\/>in time for the morning meal.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Horse<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks,<br\/>the Treasure of the Jewel<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn36\" href=\"#n36\">36<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>appears to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is an emerald jewel,<br\/>of purest water,<br\/>well cut into eight facets.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And the light<br\/>of that Treasure of the Jewel, monks,<br\/>is shed all round for a <i>yojana<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Once upon a time, monks,<br\/>the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>in order to test that very Treasure of the Jewel,<br\/>arrayed the fourfold army,<br\/>raised aloft the jewel<br\/>on the top of a standard<br\/>and went out into the dense darkness of the night.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks, the villagers all around<br\/>set about their daily work<br\/>by its effulgence,<br\/>thinking it to be day.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Jewel<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, the Treasure of the Woman<br\/>appears to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">She is lovely,<br\/>good to look upon,<br\/>charming,<br\/>endowed with the greatest beauty of complexion;<br\/>not too tall,<br\/>not too short,<br\/>not too thin,<br\/>not too stout,<br\/>not too dark,<br\/>not too <a id=\"pg220\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[220]<\/b><\/span><\/a> fair;<br\/>surpassing human beauty,<br\/>though she has not attained deva-like beauty.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And the touch of the body<br\/>of this Treasure of the Woman<br\/>is such, monks,<br\/>that it is like that of a tuft of cotton<br\/>or a tuft of thistle-down.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks, the limbs<br\/>of this Treasure of the Woman<br\/>are warm when (the weather) is cool<br\/>and cool when it is warm.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The perfume of sandal-wood<br\/>is wafted from the body<br\/>of this Treasure of the Woman, monks;<br\/>from her mouth is wafted the perfume of lotuses.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And this Treasure of the Woman, monks,<br\/>is one to get up earlier than the wheel-rolling king<br\/>and retire later to rest,<br\/>an obedient servant<br\/>carrying out his pleasure,<br\/>speaking affably.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn37\" href=\"#n37\">37<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks,<br\/>that Treasure of the Woman<br\/>is never unfaithful to the wheel-rolling king<br\/>even in thought,<br\/>how then could she be physically?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Woman<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, the Treasure of the Householder<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn38\" href=\"#n38\">38<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>appears to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As a result of <i>kamma<\/i><br\/>he has deva-like vision<br\/>by which he sees treasure<br\/>whether it has an owner or not.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Approaching the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>he speaks thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Be you untroubled, sire,<br\/>I will deal with your wealth<br\/>as wealth should be dealt with.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Once upon a time, monks,<br\/>the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>in order to test this Treasure of the Householder,<br\/>embarked in a boat,<br\/>pushed out into the middle of the stream of the river Ganges,<br\/>and spoke thus to the Treasure of the Householder:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;I have need, householder,<br\/>of gold coins and gold.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Well then, your majesty,<br\/>let the boat come in to one of the banks.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;It is just here, householder,<br\/>that I have need of gold coins and gold.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks,<br\/>that Treasure of the Householder,<br\/>touching the water with both his hands,<br\/>drew up a jar<br\/>full of gold coins and gold<br\/>and spoke thus to the wheel-rolling king:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Is this enough, your majesty,<br\/>have I done enough, your majesty,<br\/>is the service enough, your majesty?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The wheel-rolling king spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is enough, householder,<br\/>you have done enough, householder,<br\/>the service is enough, householder.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Householder<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, the Treasure of the Adviser<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn39\" href=\"#n39\">39<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> appears to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He is clever,<br\/>experienced,<br\/>wise;<br\/>he is pro- <a id=\"pg221\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[221]<\/b><\/span><\/a> ficient in procuring what should be procured<br\/>for the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>in removing what should be removed,<br\/>in retaining what should be retained.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn40\" href=\"#n40\">40<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Having approached the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>he speaks thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Be you untroubled, sire,<br\/>I will instruct (you).&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, monks, does the Treasure of the Adviser<br\/>appear to the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The wheel-rolling king, monks,<br\/>is endowed with these seven Treasures.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And with what four efficacies?<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn41\" href=\"#n41\">41<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, monks,<br\/>a wheel-rolling king is lovely,<br\/>good to look upon,<br\/>charming,<br\/>endowed with the greatest beauty of complexion<br\/>surpassing other men&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is endowed with this first efficacy.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks, a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is of long life,<br\/>living long,<br\/>surpassing other men.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is endowed with this second efficacy.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks,<br\/>a wheel-rolling king<br\/>has little illness,<br\/>does not ail,<br\/>is possessed of a good digestion<br\/>that is neither too cold nor too hot,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn42\" href=\"#n42\">42<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>surpassing other men&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is endowed with this third efficacy.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, monks,<br\/>a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is dear to brahmans and householders<br\/>and beloved by them.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As, monks, fathers<br\/>are dear to and beloved by their children,<br\/>so, monks, is a wheel-rolling king<br\/>dear to and beloved by brahmans and householders.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks, brahmans and householders<br\/>are dear to and beloved by the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As, monks, children<br\/>are dear to and beloved by their father,<br\/>so, monks, are brahmans and householders<br\/>dear to and beloved by the wheel-rolling king.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Once upon a time, monks,<br\/>a wheel-rolling king<br\/>went out to a pleasure ground<br\/>with a fourfold army.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then, monks, brahmans and householders,<br\/>approaching the wheel-rolling king,<br\/>spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Go on slowly, sire,<br\/>that we may look on you for longer.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, monks, the wheel-rolling king<br\/>addressed the charioteer,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Drive on slowly, charioteer,<br\/>that I may look on the brahmans and householders for longer.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is endowed with this fourth efficacy.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg222\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[222]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Monks, a wheel-rolling king<br\/>is endowed with these four efficacies.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What do you think about this, monks?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Does not a wheel-rolling king,<br\/>endowed with these seven Treasures<br\/>and these four efficacies,<br\/>experience happiness and joy from that source?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;A wheel-rolling king, revered sir,<br\/>if possessed of only one Treasure<br\/>would experience happiness and joy from that source.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">How much more then<br\/>from seven Treasures<br\/>and four efficacies?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the Lord,<br\/>having picked up a small stone<br\/>the size of his hand,<br\/>addressed the monks,<br\/>saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;What do you think about this, monks?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Now which is the greater,<br\/>this small stone,<br\/>the size of my hand,<br\/>that I have picked up,<br\/>or the Himalaya,<br\/>lord of mountains?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;This small stone, revered sir,<br\/>that the Lord has picked up,<br\/>the size of his hand,<br\/>is insignificant;<br\/>compared with the Himalaya,<br\/>lord of mountains,<br\/>it does not count,<br\/>it does not amount even to an infinitesimal fraction (of it),<br\/>it cannot even be compared (with it).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Even so, monks,<br\/>that happiness and joy<br\/>that the wheel-rolling king experiences<br\/>from the seven Treasures<br\/>and the four efficacies,<br\/>compared with deva-like happiness<br\/>does not count,<br\/>it does not amount to an infinitesimal fraction (of it),<br\/>it cannot even be compared (with it).<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, if sometime or other<br\/>once in a very long while<br\/>that wise man came to human status,<br\/>he would be born into one of those families that are high:<br\/>a family of rich nobles<br\/>or a family of rich brahmans<br\/>or a family of rich householders,<br\/>in such a family as is well-to-do,<br\/>of great possessions,<br\/>of great resources,<br\/>with abundant gold and silver,<br\/>abundant means,<br\/>abundant wealth in grains.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Moreover, he would be lovely,<br\/>good to look upon,<br\/>charming,<br\/>endowed with the greatest beauty of complexion;<br\/>he would be able to get food,<br\/>drink,<br\/>clothes,<br\/>vehicles,<br\/>garlands,<br\/>scents and perfumes,<br\/>bed,<br\/>dwelling<br\/>and lights;<br\/>he would fare rightly in body,<br\/>rightly in speech,<br\/>rightly in thought.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Because he had fared rightly in body,<br\/>speech<br\/>and thought,<br\/>at the breaking up of the body after dying<br\/>he would arise in a good bourn,<br\/>a heaven world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, it is as though a gambler<br\/>at the very first winning throw (at dice)<br\/>were great mass of possessions.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Greater than this<br\/>is the winning throw<br\/>by which the wise man,<br\/>having fared rightly in body,<br\/>rightly in
