href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#benares\">Benares<\/a><br\/>in the deer-park<br\/>at Isipatana.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered One,&#8221; these monks answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;The matchless Wheel of <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>set rolling by the Tath\u0101\u0101gata,<br\/>the perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>in the deer-park at Isipatana<br\/>near Benares<br\/>cannot be rolled back<br\/>by a recluse or brahman<br\/>or deva<br\/>or M\u0101ra<br\/>or Brahm\u0101<br\/>or by anyone in the world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">That is to say,<br\/>it was a proclamation of the four ariyan truths,<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing,<br\/>and making of them plain.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Of what four?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was a proclamation,<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing<br\/>and making plain<br\/>of the ariyan truth of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was a proclamation,<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing<br\/>and making plain<br\/>of the ariyan truth of the arising of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was a proclamation,<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing<br\/>and making plain<br\/>of the ariyan truth of the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It was a proclamation,<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing<br\/>and making plain<br\/>of the ariyan truth of the course<br\/>leading to the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The matchless Wheel of <i>Dhamma<\/i>} monks,<br\/>set rolling by the Tath\u0101\u0101gata,<br\/>the perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>in the deer-park at Isipatana<br\/>near Benares<br\/>cannot be rolled back<br\/>by a recluse or brahman<br\/>or deva<br\/>or M\u0101ra<br\/>or Brahm\u0101<br\/>or by anyone in the world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">That is to say,<br\/>it was a proclamation of the four ariyan truths,<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing,<br\/>and making of them plain.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, follow S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na; monks,<br\/>associate with S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na;<br\/>they are wise monks<br\/>who are helpers<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> to Brahma-farers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Monks, like a mother,<br\/>so is S\u0101riputta;<br\/>like a child&#8217;s foster-mother,<br\/>so is Moggall\u0101na.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">S\u0101riputta, monks,<br\/>trains (one) in the fruit of stream-attainment,<br\/>Moggall\u0101na in the highest <a id=\"pg296\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[296]<\/b><\/span><\/a> goal.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> S\u0101riputta, monks,<br\/>is able to proclaim,<br\/>teach,<br\/>lay down,<br\/>establish,<br\/>open up,<br\/>analyse<br\/>and make plain<br\/>the four ariyan truths in full.&#8221;<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus spoke the Lord;<br\/>and having said this,<br\/>the Well-farer rose from his seat<br\/>and entered a dwelling-place.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4 ctr c\">\u00a7<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Soon after the Lord had departed<br\/>the venerable S\u0101riputta addressed the monks who were there,<br\/>saying;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Reverend monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Your reverence,&#8221;<br\/>these monks answered the venerable S\u0101riputta in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The venerable S\u0101riputta spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Your reverences, the matchless Wheel of <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>set rolling by the Tath\u0101\u0101gata,<br\/>perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>in the deer-park at Isipatana<br\/>near Benares<br\/>cannot be rolled back<br\/>by a recluse or brahman<br\/>or deva<br\/>or M\u0101ra<br\/>or Brahm\u0101<br\/>or by anyone in the anguish<br\/>and dying is anguish;<br\/>and grief,<br\/>sorrow,<br\/>suffering,<br\/>misery<br\/>and<br\/>despair are anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And not getting what one desires,<br\/>that too is anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">In brief,<br\/>the five groups of grasping<br\/>are anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is birth?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is the conception,<br\/>the production,<br\/>the descent,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>the rebirth,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>the coming forth<br\/>of various beings<br\/>in the various classes of beings,<br\/>the appearance of the groups (of grasping),<br\/>the acquiring of the sense-bases.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called birth.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is old age?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is the old age,<br\/>decrepitude,<br\/>broken teeth,<br\/>greying hair,<br\/>wrinkly skin,<br\/>the dwindling of the life-span,<br\/>the collapse of the sense-organs<br\/>of the various beings<br\/>in the various classes of beings.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called old age.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is dying?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is the falling away,<br\/>the passing away,<br\/>the breaking up,<br\/>the disappearance,<br\/>the death<br\/>and <a id=\"pg297\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[297]<\/b><\/span><\/a> dying,<br\/>the action of time,<br\/>the breaking up of the groups (of grasping),<br\/>the laying down of the body.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called dying.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is grief?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It, your reverences, is the grief,<br\/>sorrow,<br\/>sorrowfulness,<br\/>the inward grief,<br\/>the inner pain<br\/>of one visited by some kind of calamity or other,<br\/>smitten by some kind of ill or other.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is the crying,<br\/>the wailing,<br\/>the act of crying,<br\/>the act of wailing,<br\/>the state of crying,<br\/>the state of wailing<br\/>of one visited by some calamity or other,<br\/>smitten by some kind of ill or other.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is suffering?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It, your reverences, is physical suffering,<br\/>physical disagreeableness<br\/>arising from an impingement on the body<br\/>and experienced as suffering,<br\/>as disagreeableness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called suffering.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is misery?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It, your reverences, is mental suffering,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>mental disagreeableness<br\/>arising from an impingement on the mind<br\/>and experienced as suffering,<br\/>as disagreeableness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called misery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is despair?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It, your reverences, is despondency,<br\/>despair,<br\/>the state of despondency,<br\/>the state of despair<br\/>of one visited by some calamity or other,<br\/>smitten by some kind of ill or other.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called despair.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences is meant by<br\/>&#8216;not getting what one desires,<br\/>that too is anguish&#8217;?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, a wish like this arises<br\/>in creatures liable to birth:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;0 might we be not liable to birth<br\/>and birth not come to us.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this is not to be had for the wishing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So &#8216;not getting what one desires,<br\/>that too is anguish.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, a wish like this arises<br\/>in creatures liable to ageing:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;0 might we be not liable to ageing<br\/>and ageing not come to us.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this is not to be had for the wishing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So &#8216;not getting what one desires,<br\/>that too is anguish.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, a wish like this arises<br\/>in creatures liable to disease:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;0 might we be not liable to disease<br\/>and disease not come to us.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this is not to be had for the wishing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So &#8216;not getting what one desires,<br\/>that too is anguish.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, a wish like this arises<br\/>in creatures liable to grief,<br\/>sorrow,<br\/>suffering,<br\/>misery<br\/>and despair:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;0 might we be not liable to grief,<br\/>sorrow,<br\/>suffering,<br\/>misery<br\/>and despair<br\/>and grief,<br\/>sorrow,<br\/>suffering,<br\/>misery<br\/>and despair not come to us.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But this is not to be had for the wishing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So &#8216;not getting what one desires,<br\/>that too is anguish.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, in brief, your reverences,<br\/>are the five groups of grasping that are anguish?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">These are:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">the group of grasping after material shape,<br\/>the group of grasping after feeling,<br\/>the group of grasping after perception,<br\/>the group of grasping after the habitual tendencies,<br\/>the group of grasping after consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, these are called<br\/>in brief the five groups of grasping that are anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg298\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[298]<\/b><\/span><\/a> Your reverences, this is called the ariyan truth of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is the ariyan truth of the arising of anguish?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever craving is connected with again-becoming,<br\/>accompanied by delight and attachment,<br\/>finding delight in this and that,<br\/>namely the craving for sense-pleasures,<br\/>the craving for becoming,<br\/>the craving for annihilation &#8211;<br\/>this, your reverences, is called<br\/>the ariyan truth of the arising of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is the ariyan truth of the stopping of anguish?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever is the stopping,<br\/>with no attachment remaining,<br\/>of that self-same craving,<br\/>the relinquishment of it,<br\/>casting aside of it,<br\/>release from it,<br\/>independence of it,<br\/>this, your reverences, is called<br\/>the ariyan truth of the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is the ariyan truth of the course<br\/>leading to the stopping of anguish?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It is this ariyan Eightfold Way itself,<br\/>that is to say:<br\/>right view,<br\/>right aspiration,<br\/>right speech,<br\/>right action,<br\/>right mode of livelihood,<br\/>right endeavour,<br\/>right mindfulness,<br\/>right concentration.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences, is right view?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Whatever, your reverences, is knowledge of anguish,<br\/>knowledge of the arising of anguish,<br\/>knowledge of the stopping of anguish,<br\/>knowledge of the course<br\/>leading to the stopping of anguish &#8211;<br\/>this, your reverences, is called right view.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is right aspiration?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Aspiration for renunciation,<br\/>aspiration for non-malevolence,<br\/>aspiration for harmlessness &#8211;<br\/>this, your reverences, is called<br\/>right aspiration.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is\tright\tspeech?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Refraining from lying speech,<br\/>refraining from slanderous speech,<br\/>refraining from harsh speech,<br\/>refraining from gossip,<br\/>this, your reverences, is called<br\/>right speech.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is\tright\taction?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Refraining from onslaught on creatures,<br\/>refraining from taking what has not\tbeen given,<br\/>refraining from going wrongly among the sense-pleasures,<br\/>this, your reverences, is called<br\/>right action.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is called<br\/>right endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what, your reverences,<br\/>is right mindfulness?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, your reverences,<br\/>a monk fares along<br\/>contemplating the body in the body,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>clearly conscious (of them),<br\/>mindful (of them)<br\/>so as to control the covetousness<br\/>and dejection<br\/>in the world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">He fares along<br\/>contemplating the feelings in the feelings,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>clearly conscious (of mind,<br\/>entering into the first meditation<br\/>which is accompanied by initial thought<br\/>and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of aloofness,<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful,<br\/>abides in it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, your reverences, a monk,<br\/>by allaying initial and discursive thought,<br\/>his mind subjectively tranquillised<br\/>and fixed on one point,<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the second meditation<br\/>which is devoid of initial and discursive thought,<br\/>is born of concentration<br\/>and is rapturous and joyful.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, your reverences, a monk,<br\/>by the fading out of rapture,<br\/>dwells with equanimity,<br\/>attentive and clearly conscious,<br\/>and experiences in his person<br\/>that joy of which the ariyans say:<br\/>&#8216;Joyful lives he who has equanimity and is mindful,&#8217;<br\/>and he enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the third meditation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And again, your reverences, a monk<br\/>by getting rid of joy,<br\/>by getting rid of anguish,<br\/>by the going down of his former pleasures and sorrows,<br\/>enters on<br\/>and abides in<br\/>the fourth meditation<br\/>which has neither anguish nor joy,<br\/>and which is entirely purified<br\/>by equanimity and mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called<br\/>right concentration.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">This, your reverences, is called<br\/>the ariyan truth of the course leading to the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Your reverences, the matchless Wheel of <i>Dhamma<\/i><br\/>set rolling by the Tath\u0101\u0101gata,<br\/>the perfected one,<br\/>fully Self-Awakened One<br\/>in the deer-park at Isipatana<br\/>near Benares<br\/>cannot be rolled back<br\/>by a recluse or brahman<br\/>or deva<br\/>or M\u0101ra<br\/>or Brahm\u0101<br\/>or by anyone in the world.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">That is to say,<br\/>it was a proclamation<br\/>a teaching,<br\/>laying down,<br\/>establishing,<br\/>opening up,<br\/>analysing,<br\/>and making plain<br\/>of these four ariyan truths.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus spoke the venerable S\u0101riputta.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p &#8220;patron.&#8221; <i>SA.<\/i> ii. 256 instances two forms of help, <i>anuggaha,<\/i> help with material things and help with <i>Dhamma<\/i>. At <i>Vin.<\/i> iv. 325 &#8220;should neither help,&#8221; <i>n&#8217;eva anugga\u1e45heyya,<\/i> is defined to mean: &#8220;should neither herself help (her pupil) with the recitation, interrogation, exhortation and instruction.&#8221; This therefore must be regarded as help with <i>Dhamma<\/i>. It also appears that when <i>anugga\u1e45h\u0101ti<\/i> is used in relation to the attitude of a more experienced member of the Order to a less experienced one, it carries a technical or semi-technical sense.
