class=\"f2\"><b>EARD<\/b><\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">At one time the Lord was staying among the Sakyans in Nigrodha&#8217;s monastery near <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#kapilavatthu\">Kapilavatthu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn1\" href=\"#n1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> the Gotamid,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>bringing a pair of new cloths,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached and greeted the Lord,<br\/>she sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As she was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered sir, this pair of new cloths<br\/>has been cut out by me<br\/>and woven by me<br\/>specially for the Lord;<br\/>revered sir, may the Lord<br\/>out of compassion<br\/>accept it from me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When this had been said,<br\/>the Lord spoke thus to Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Give it to the Order,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> Gotami.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If you give it to the Order<br\/>I will be honoured<br\/>and the Order too.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And a second time Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered sir, this pair of new cloths<br\/>has been cut out by me<br\/>and woven by me<br\/>specially for the Lord;<br\/>revered sir, may the Lord<br\/>out of compassion<br\/>accept it from me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg301\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[301]<\/b><\/span><\/a> &#8220;Revered sir, let the Lord accept the Gotamid Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b&#8217;s<br\/>new pair of cloths.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn6\" href=\"#n6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Revered sir, Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid<br\/>has been of much service to the Lord.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">She is his maternal aunt,<br\/>the one who brought him up,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>who looked after him<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>and gave him milk,<br\/>for when the Lord&#8217;s own mother passed away<br\/>she suckled him.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And, revered sir,<br\/>the Lord has been of much service to Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Revered sir, it is due to the Lord<br\/>that Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid<br\/>has gone to the Awakened One for refuge,<br\/>has gone to <i>Dhamma<\/i> for refuge,<br\/>has gone to the Order for refuge.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Revered sir, it is due to the Lord,<br\/>that Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid<br\/>refrains from onslaught on creatures,<br\/>refrains from taking what has not been given,<br\/>refrains from going wrongly among the sense-pleasures,<br\/>refrains from lying speech,<br\/>refrains from occasions of sloth induced by intoxicants.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Revered sir, it is due to the Lord that Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid<br\/>is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Awakened One,<br\/>is possessed of unwavering confidence in <i>Dhamma<\/i>,<br\/>is possessed of unwavering confidence in the Order,<br\/>is possessed of the moral habits pleasing to the ariyans.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Revered sir, it is due to the Lord that Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b<br\/>is not doubtful about anguish,<br\/>is not doubtful about the origin of anguish,<br\/>is not doubtful about the stopping of anguish,<br\/>is not doubtful about the course leading to the stopping of anguish.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So, revered sir,<br\/>the Lord has been of much service to Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b the Gotamid.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;That is so, \u0100nanda,<br\/>that is so, \u0100nanda.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And if it is due to a person<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn11\" href=\"#n11\">11<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>that some (other) person<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn12\" href=\"#n12\">12<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>goes to the Awakened One for refuge,<br\/>to <i>Dhamma<\/i> for refuge,<br\/>to the Order for refuge,<br\/>I say of this person, \u0100nanda,<br\/>that there is no proper requital<br\/>in regard to that person,<br\/>that is to say as regards greeting,<br\/>rising up for,<br\/>saluting with One &#8211;<br\/>this is the first offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to one enlightened for and by himself alone<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn14\" href=\"#n14\">14<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>this is the second offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to a Tath\u0101\u0101gata&#8217;s disciple<br\/>who is one perfected &#8211;<br\/>this is the third offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to one faring along for the realisation<br\/>of the fruit of perfection &#8211;<br\/>this is the fourth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to a non-returner &#8211;<br\/>this is the fifth offering offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of non-returning &#8211;<br\/>this is the sixth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to a once-returner &#8211;<br\/>this is the seventh offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of once-returning &#8211;<br\/>this is the eighth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to a stream-attainer &#8211;<br\/>this is the ninth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of stream-attainment &#8211;<br\/>this is the tenth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to one who is beyond and without attachment to sense-pleasures<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn15\" href=\"#n15\">15<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>this is the eleventh offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to an ordinary person of moral habit &#8211;<br\/>this is the twelfth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to an ordinary person of poor moral habit &#8211;<br\/>this is the thirteenth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to an animal &#8211;<br\/>this is the fourteenth offering graded as to individuals.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><a id=\"pg303\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[303]<\/b><\/span><\/a> As to this, \u0100nanda,<br\/>when a gift has been given<br\/>to an animal,<br\/>it is expected that the offering (yields) a hundredfold.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn16\" href=\"#n16\">16<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">when a gift has been given<br\/>to an ordinary person of poor moral habit,<br\/>it is to be expected that the offering (yields) a thousandfold.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When a gift has been given<br\/>to an ordinary person of moral habit,<br\/>it is to be expected that the offering (yields) a hundred thousandfold.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When a gift<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn17\" href=\"#n17\">17<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> has been given<br\/>to one who is beyond and without attachment to sense-pleasures,<br\/>it is to be expected that the offering (yields) a hundred thousandfold of <a href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/weights_and_measures\/weights_and_measures.htm#crore\">crores.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">When a gift has been given<br\/>to one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of stream-attainment,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn18\" href=\"#n18\">18<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>it is to be expected that the offering<br\/>(yields) what is incalculable and immeasurable.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">So what can be said of the stream-attainer?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of the one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of once-returning?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of the once-returner?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of non-returning?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of the non-retumer?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of one faring along for the realisation of the fruit of perfection?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of one perfected?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of a Tath\u0101\u0101gata&#8217;s disciple<br\/>who is one perfected?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of one enlightened for and by himself alone?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What can be said of a Tath\u0101\u0101gata, perfected one, fully Self-Awakened One?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And there are these seven kinds of offerings to the Order, \u0100nanda:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to both Orders<br\/>with the Awakened One at the head<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn19\" href=\"#n19\">19<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>this is the first offering to the Order.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn20\" href=\"#n20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to both Orders<br\/>after the Awakened One has attained final nibb\u0101na<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn21\" href=\"#n21\">21<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> &#8211;<br\/>this is the second offering to the Order.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to the Order of monks &#8211;<br\/>this is the third offering to the Order.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift<br\/>to the Order of nuns &#8211;<br\/>this is the fourth offering to the Order.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift,<br\/>saying,<br\/>&#8216;May so many monks and nuns be specified for me by the Order&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>this is the fifth offering to the Order.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One <a id=\"pg304\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[304]<\/b><\/span><\/a> gives a gift, saying:<br\/>&#8216;May so many monks be specified for me by the Order&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>this is the sixth offering to the Order.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">One gives a gift, saying,<br\/>&#8216;May so many nuns be specified for me by the Order&#8217; &#8211;<br\/>this is the seventh offering to the Order.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">But, \u0100nanda, in the distant future<br\/>there will be those of the ariyan clan,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn22\" href=\"#n22\">22<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>the yellow robes around their necks,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn23\" href=\"#n23\">23<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>who will be of bad morality<br\/>and evil character;<br\/>and a gift will be given to the Order<br\/>specially for these of bad morality.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\"><b>But when I, \u0100nanda, say<br\/>that an offering to the Order<br\/>is incalculable<br\/>and immeasurable<br\/>I by no means say<br\/>that a gift graded as to individuals<br\/>is of greater fruit<br\/>than an offering to the Order.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There are these four purifications of offerings,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn24\" href=\"#n24\">24<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> \u0100nanda.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What four?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the offering purified by the giver<br\/>but not by the recipient.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the offering purified by the recipient<br\/>but not by the giver.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the offering purified<br\/>neither by the giver<br\/>nor the recipient.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">There is, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the offering purified<br\/>both by the giver<br\/>and the recipient.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<hr class=\"hrctr\"\/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And what offering, \u0100nanda,<br\/>is purified by the giver<br\/>but not by the recipient?<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As to this, \u0100nanda,<br\/>the giver is of moral habit<br\/>and lovely character,<br\/>the recipients are of poor morality<br\/>and of evil character.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p For <i>MA.<\/i> v. 73 says &#8220;on one side is the Order of monks, on the other the Order of nuns, and the Teacher is sitting in the middle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"lgqt\"><sup>[<a id=\"n20\" href=\"#fn20\">20<\/a>]<\/sup> This explains why, if Mah\u0101 Paj\u0101pat\u012b gives a gift to the Order, the Lord will be honoured as well as the Order.
