href=\"http:\/\/obo.genaud.net\/..\/..\/backmatter\/appendixes\/buddhas_india\/buddhas_india.htm#savatthi\">S\u0101vatth\u012b,<\/a><br\/>in the Jeta Grove,<br\/>in An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika&#8217;s, monastery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn2\" href=\"#n2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>emerging from solitary meditation towards evening,<br\/>approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached and greeted the Lord,<br\/>he sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As he was sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>the venerable Pu\u1e47\u1e47a spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It would be good, revered sir,<br\/>if the Lord would exhort me<br\/>with an exhortation in brief<br\/>so that I,<br\/>having heard dhamma from the Lord,<br\/>might abide alone,<br\/>aloof,<br\/>diligent,<br\/>ardent,<br\/>self-resolute.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Well then, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a, listen,<br\/>attend carefully<br\/>and I will speak.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Yes, revered sir,&#8221;<br\/>the venerable Pu\u1e47\u1e47a answered the Lord in assent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">The Lord spoke thus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;There are, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>material shapes cognisable by the eye,<br\/>agreeable,<br\/>pleasant,<br\/>liked,<br\/>enticing,<br\/>connected with sensual pleasures,<br\/>alluring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a monk delights in these,<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn3\" href=\"#n3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>welcomes them<br\/>and persists in cleaving to them,<br\/>then, because he delights in them,<br\/>welcomes them<br\/>and persists in cleaving to them,<br\/>delight uprises in him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I say, <a pleasures,<br\/>alluring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a monk delights in these,<br\/>welcomes them<br\/>and persists in cleaving to them,<br\/>then, because he delights in them,<br\/>welcomes class=\"f4\">If a monk delights in these,<br\/>welcomes them<br\/>and persists in cleaving to them,<br\/>then, because he delights in them,<br\/>welcomes them<br\/>and persists in cleaving to pleasures,<br\/>alluring.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If a monk does not delight in these,<br\/>does not welcome them<br\/>or persists in cleaving to them,<br\/>then, because he does not delight in them,<br\/>welcomes them<br\/>or persists in cleaving to them,<br\/>delight is stopped in him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I say, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>that from the stopping of stay, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>now that you have been exhorted by me<br\/>with this exhortation in brief?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;There is a district called Sun\u0101paranta.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn4\" href=\"#n4\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will stay there, revered sir,<br\/>now that I have been exhorted by the Lord<br\/>with this exhortation in brief.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Pu\u1e47\u1e47a, the people of Sun\u0101paranta are fierce,<br\/>the people of Sun\u0101paranta are rough.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">If the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>revile<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn5\" href=\"#n5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and abuse you, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>how will it be for you there, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>revile and abuse me, revered sir,<br\/>it will be thus for me there:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will say,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Goodly indeed are these people of Sun\u0101paranta,<br\/>indeed very goodly are these people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>in that they do not strike me a blow with their hands.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It will be thus for me here, Lord,<br\/>it will be thus for me here, Well-farer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But if the people of Sun\u0101parnata<br\/>do strike you a blow with their hands, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>how will it be for you there, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>strike me a blow with their hands, revered sir,<br\/>it will be thus for me there:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will say,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Goodly indeed are these people of Sun\u0101paranta,<br\/>indeed very goodly are these people <a class=\"f4\">&#8216;Goodly indeed are these people of Sun\u0101paranta,<br\/>indeed very goodly are these people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>in that they do not strike me a blow with a stick.&#8217;<span Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>how will it be for you there, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>strike me a blow with a stick, revered sir,<br\/>it will be thus for me there:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will say,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Goodly indeed are these people of Sun\u0101paranta,<br\/>indeed very goodly are these people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>in that they do not strike me a blow with a knife.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It will be thus for me here, Lord,<br\/>it will be thus for Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>how will it be for you there, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>strike me a blow with a knife, revered sir,<br\/>it will be thus for me there:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will say,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;Goodly indeed are these people of Sun\u0101paranta,<br\/>indeed very goodly are these people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>in that they do not deprive me of life<br\/>with a sharp knife.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It will be thus for me here, Lord,<br\/>it will be thus for me here, Well-farer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ctr c\">\u25a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;But if the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>do deprive you of life<br\/>with a sharp knife, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>how will it be for you there, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;If the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>deprive me of life<br\/>with a sharp knife, revered sir,<br\/>it will be thus for me there:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">I will say,<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8216;There are disciples of the Lord<br\/>who, disgusted by the body<br\/>and the life-principle<br\/>and ashamed of them,<br\/>look about for a knife<br\/>(with which to kill themselves).<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn7\" href=\"#n7\">7<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><br\/>I have come upon this very knife<br\/>without having looked about for it.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">It will be thus for me here, Lord,<br\/>it will be thus for me here, Well-farer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;It is good, Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>it is good.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">You will be able to live in the district<br\/>among the people of Sun\u0101paranta<br\/>possessed as you are<br\/>of this taming and calm.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn8\" href=\"#n8\">8<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">You, Punna, now do that<br\/>for which you deem the time is right.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then the venerable Pu\u1e47\u1e47a,<br\/>having rejoiced in what the Lord had said<br\/>and having given thanks for it,<br\/>rose from his seat<br\/>and greeted the Lord<br\/>keeping his right side towards him,<br\/>packed away his lodging<br\/>and, taking his bowl and robe,<br\/>set out on tour for the Sun\u0101paranta district.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Walking on tour,<br\/>he gradually arrived at the Sun\u0101paranta district.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">While he was there<br\/>the venerable Pun\u1e47a stayed in the district among the people of Sun\u0101paranta.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">And <a id=\"pg322\"><span class=\"f2 g\"><b>[322]<\/b><\/span><\/a> during the same rainy season<br\/>the venerable Pu\u1e47\u1e47a established as many as five hundred lay-devotees,<br\/>as many as five hundred female lay-devotees,<br\/>and he realized the three knowledges.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Then after a time<br\/>the venerable Pu\u1e47\u1e47a attained final nibb\u0101na.<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn9\" href=\"#n9\">9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">A number of monks approached the Lord;<br\/>having approached and greeted the Lord,<br\/>they sat down at a respectful distance.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">As they were sitting down at a respectful distance,<br\/>these monks spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Revered sir, that young man of family<span class=\"f1\"><sup>[<a id=\"fn10\" href=\"#n10\">10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> named Pu\u1e47\u1e47a<br\/>who was exhorted by the Lord with an exhortation in brief,<br\/>has died.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">What is his bourn,<br\/>what his future state?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">&#8220;Clever, monks, was Pu\u1e47\u1e47a<br\/>the young man of family;<br\/>he followed after dhamma<br\/>according to the various parts of dhamma;<br\/>and he did not annoy me<br\/>with questionings about dhamma.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Pu\u1e47\u1e47a the young man of family<br\/>has gained final nibb\u0101na, monks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Thus spoke the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4\">Delighted, these monks rejoiced in what the Lord had said.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"f4
