While residing at the Jetavana Monastery, the Buddha spoke this verse with reference to M\u0101ra.<\/span><\/p>\n

On one occasion, M\u0101ra came to the Buddha disguised as a man and asked him, \u201cVenerable! You often say the word p\u0101ra\u1e43; what is the meaning of that word?\u201d The Buddha, knowing that it was M\u0101ra who was asking that question, chided him, \u201cO\u2019 wicked M\u0101ra! The words p\u0101ra\u1e43 and ap\u0101ra\u1e43 have nothing to do with you. P\u0101ra\u1e43, which means the other shore, can be reached only by the arahats who are free from moral defilements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To him there is no further shore. To him there is no near shore either. To him both these shores are nonexistent. He is free of anxiety and is freed from bonds. That person I describe as a Br\u0101hma\u1e47a.<\/span><\/p>\n

COMMENTARY<\/span><\/p>\n

p\u0101ra\u1e43: sense fields. Sense fields are twelve, six of which are personal sense-fields, the other six are external sense-fields. These are described as \u0101yatanas \u2013 spheres, which is a name for the four immaterial absorptions. The twelve bases or sources on which depend the mental processes, consist of five physical sense-organs and consciousness, being the six personal (ajjhattika) bases; and six objects, the so-called external (b\u0101hira) bases:<\/span><\/p>\n

eye, or visual organ; visible object,<\/span><\/p>\n

ear, or auditory organ; sound, or audible object,<\/span><\/p>\n

nose, or olfactory organ; odour, or olfactive object,<\/span><\/p>\n

tongue, or gustatory organ; taste, or gustative object,<\/span><\/p>\n

body, or tactile organ; body-impression, or tactile object,<\/span><\/p>\n

mind-base, or consciousness; mind-object (manayatana)<\/span><\/p>\n

(dhamm\u0101yatana),<\/span><\/p>\n

By the visual organ (cakkh\u0101yatana) is meant the sensitive part of the eye (cakkhu-pas\u0101da) built up of the four elements\u2026 responding to sense-stimuli (sa-ppa\u1e6digha). Similar is the explanation of the four remaining physical sense-organs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mind-base (man\u0101yatana) is a collective term for all consciousness, whatever, and should therefore not be confounded with the mindelement (mano-dh\u0101tu), which latter performs only the functions of adverting (vajjana) to the sense-object, and of receiving (sampa\u1e6dicchana) the sense-object. On the functions of the mind (vi\u00f1\u00f1\u0101na-kicca):<\/span><\/p>\n

The visible object (r\u016bp\u0101yatana) is described as that phenomenon which is built up of the four physical elements and appears as colours. What is seen by visual perception, let\u2019s say eye-consciousness (cakkhu-vi\u00f1\u00f1\u0101na), are colours and differences of light, but not three dimensional bodily things.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mind-object-base (dhamm\u0101yatana) is identical with mind-object-element (dhamma-dh\u0101tu and dhamm\u0101ramma\u1e47a). It may be physical or mental, past present or future, real or imaginary.<\/span><\/p>\n

The five physical sense organs are also called faculties (indriya), and of these faculties it is said: Each of the five faculties owns a different sphere, and none of them partakes of the sphere of another one\u2026; they have mind as their support\u2026 are conditioned by vitality\u2026 but vitality again is conditioned by heat\u2026 heat again by vitality, just as the light and flame of a burning lamp are mutually conditioned.<\/span><\/div>\n
