The Four Noble Truths<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The four truths are the truth of suffering, of origin, of the cessation, and of the path. There are twelve aspects when the four truths are multiplied by three each:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The truth of suffering is the vessel and its contents (the world and the beings). The truth of origin is the karmas and disturbing emotions. The truth of cessation is the quality of having relinquished both the karmas and disturbing emotions along with their effects. The truth of the path is the paths and bhumis.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Describing their substance or essence: the truth of suffering, which is like a sickness, the truth of origin is like the cause of the sickness, the truth of cessation is like having recovered from the sickness, and the truth of the path is like following a cure for the sickness.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Describing their functions: the truth of suffering, which is like a sickness, is what should be acknowledged; the truth of origin, which is like the cause of the sickness, is what should be relinquished; the truth of cessation, which is like having recovered from the sickness, is what should be realized; and the truth of the path, which is like a medicine, is what should be applied in one\u2019s being.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.Describing the result: After having acknowledged the truth of suffering, which is like a sickness, it is not something to acknowledge again. After having relinquished the truth of origin, which is like the cause of the sickness, it is not something to relinquish again. After having realized the truth of cessation, which is like having recovered from the sickness, it is not something to realize again. After having applied in one\u2019s being the truth of the path, which is like a medicine, it is not something to apply again.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aspect of samsaric existence (the state of affliction) is two: the suffering (theeffect of samsara) and the origin (the cause of samsara). The aspect of peace and perfection is two: the cessation (the effect of nirvana) and the path (the cause of nirvana).<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The sixteen aspects of the four truths:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Cause, origin, production, and condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Cessation, peace, excellence, and deliverance.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Path, knowledge, accomplishment, and liberating.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The four aspects of the truth of suffering: All composite things are impermanent. All samsaric phenomena are suffering. All outer phenomena are emptiness. All inner phenomena are devoid of a self-entity.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The four aspects of truth of origin: Ego-clinging is the cause because it is the root of all suffering. It is the origin because from it all samsaric suffering arises. It is production because this forceful suffering produces immediate pain. It is the connecting condition because of experiencing suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The four aspects of cessation: It is cessation because all causes and effects of suffering have ceased. It is peace because all the disturbing emotions of delusion have subsidied. It is excellence because it is the most sublime and eminent quality. It is deliverance because it does not reverse and is definitive liberation from samsara.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The four aspects of the truth of the path: It is the path because it progresses higher and higher. It is knowledge because it serves as the antidote to the disturbing emotions. It is accomplishment because it is genuine achievement. It is liberating because it leads to perpetual emancipation and nirvana.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Uttaratantra says:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The sickness should be acknowledged and the cause of the sickness relinquished.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

While the medicine should be applied in order to attain the state of ease.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, the suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Should be acknowledged, relinquished, realized, and applied.<\/span><\/p>\n
