Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Kosalesu viharati Naḷakapāne palāsavane.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā abhiññātā abhiññātā kula-puttā Bhagavantaṃ uddissa saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā honti.|| ||

Āyasmā ca Anuruddho āyasmā ca Bhaddiyo āyasmā ca Kimbilo āyasmā ca bhagu āyasmā kuṇḍadhāno āyasmā ca revato āyasmā ca Ānando: aññe ca abhiññātā abhiññātā kula-puttā.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Bhagavā bhikkhu-saṅgha-parivuto [463] abbhokāse nisinno hoti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā te kula-putte ārabbha bhikkhu āmantesi||
ye te bhikkhave kula-puttā mamaṃ uddissa saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
kacci te bhikkhave bhikkhū abhiratā brahma-cariye’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte te bhikkhū tuṇhī ahesuṃ.|| ||

Dutiyam pi kho Bhagavā te kula-putte ārabbha bhikkhū āmantesi,||
ye te bhikkhave kula-puttā mamaṃ uddissa saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
kacci te bhikkhave bhikkhū abhiratā brahma-cariye’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte te bhikkhū tuṇhī ahesuṃ.|| ||

Tatiyam pi kho Bhagavā te kula-putte ārabbha bhikkhū āmantesi||
ye te bhikkhave kula-puttā mamaṃ uddissa saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
kacci te bhikkhū abhiratā brahma-cariye’ ti.|| ||

Tatiyam pi kho te bhikkhū tuṇhī ahesuṃ.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavato etad ahosi: yan nūn-ā-haṃ teva3 kula-putte puccheyyan’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṃ Anuruddhaṃ āmantesi: kacci tumhe Anuruddhā abhiratā brahma-cariye’ ti.|| ||

Taggha mayaṃ bhante abhiratā brahma-cariyeti.|| ||

Sādhu sādhu Anuruddhā etaṃ kho Anuruddhā tumhākaṃ paṭirūpaṃ kula-puttānaṃ saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitānaṃ yaṃ tumhe abhirameyyātha brahma-cariye.|| ||

Yena tumhe Anuruddhā bhadrena yobbanena samannāgatā paṭhamena vayasā susu kālakesā kāme paribhuñjeyyātha.|| ||

Tena tumhe Anuruddhā bhadrena4 yobbanena samannāgatā paṭhamena vayasā susu kālakesā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā.|| ||

Te kho pana tumhe Anuruddhā n’eva rājābhinītā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
na corābhinītā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
na iṇaṭṭā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
na bhayaṭṭā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
na ājīvikāpakatā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā.|| ||

Api ca kho’mhi otiṇṇo jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi||
dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto app’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ ti.|| ||

Na nu tumhe Anuruddhā evaṃ saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā’ ti.|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante” ti.|| ||

Evaṃ pabba-jitena ca pana Anuruddhā kula-puttena kimassa.|| ||

Karaṇīyaṃ: ‘vivekaṃ Anuruddhā kāmehi vivekaṃ akusalehi dhammehi pīti-sukhaṃ nādhigacchati aññaṃ vā tato santataraṃ.|| ||

Tassa abhijjhā pi cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Vyāpādo pi cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Thīna-middham pi cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccam pi cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Vicikicchā pi [464] cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Aratīpi cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Tandīpi cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Vivekaṃ Anuruddhā kāmehi vivekaṃ akusalehi dhammehi pīti-sukhaṃ nādhigacchati aññaṃ vā tato santataraṃ.|| ||

Vivekaṃ Anuruddhā kāmehi vivekaṃ akusalehi dhammehi pīti-sukhaṃ adhigacchati aññaṃ vā tato santataraṃ.|| ||

Tassa abhijjhāpi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Vyāpādo pi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Thīna-middham pi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccam pi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Vicikicchā pi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Aratīpi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Tandīpi cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Vivekaṃ Anuruddhā kāmehi vivekaṃ akusalehi dhammehi pīti-sukhaṃ adhigacchati aññaṃ vā tato santataraṃ.|| ||

Kinti vo Anuruddhā mayi hoti: ye āsavā saṅkilesikā pono-bhavikā sadarā dukkha-vipākā āyatiṃ jāti-jarāmaraṇīyā||
a-p-pahīnā te Tathāgatassa.|| ||

Tasmā Tathāgato saṅkhāy’ekaṃ paṭisevati||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ adhivāseti||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ parivajjeti||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ vinodetī’ ti.|| ||

Na kho no bhante Bhagavati evaṃ hoti: ‘ye āsavā saṅkilesikā pono-bhavikā sadarā dukkha-vipākā āyatiṃ jāti-jarāmaraṇīyā||
a-p-pahīnā te Tathāgatassa.|| ||

Tasmā Tathāgato saṅkhāy’ekaṃ paṭisevati||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ adhivāseti||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ parivajjeti||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ vinodetī’ ti.|| ||

Tathāgatassa Anuruddhā||
ye āsavā saṅkilesikā pono-bhavikā sadarā dukkha-vipākā āyatiṃ jāti-jarāmaraṇīyā||
pahīnā te ucchinna-mūlā tālā-vatthu-katā anabhāva-katā1 āyatiṃ anuppāda-dhammā.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Anuruddhā tālo matthakacchinno abhabbo punavirūḷhiyā evam eva kho Anuruddhā Tathāgatassa ye āsavā saṅkilesikā pono-bhavikā sadarā dukkha-vipākā āyatiṃ jāti-jarāmaraṇīyā.|| ||

Pahīnā te ucchinna-mūlā tālā-vatthu-katā anabhāva-katā1 āyatiṃ anuppāda-dhammā.|| ||

Tasmā Tathāgato saṅkhāy’ekaṃ paṭisevati||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ adhivāseti||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ parivajjeti||
saṅkhāy’ekaṃ vinodetī’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kim maññasi Anuruddhā?|| ||

Kaṃ attha-vasaṃ sampassamāno Tathāgato sāvake abbhatīte kāla-kate upapattīsu vyākaroti:|| ||

‘Asu amutra upapanno||
asu amutra upapanno’ ti?|| ||

[465] Bhagavam-mūlakā no bhante dhammā||
Bhagavan-nettikā||
Bhagavam-paṭisaraṇā.|| ||

Sādhu vata bhante Bhagavantaṃ yeva paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho.|| ||

Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressan’ ti.ti.|| ||

Na kho Anuruddhā Tathāgato janakuhanatthaṃ na janalapanatthaṃ na lābha-sakkāra-silokānisaṃsatthaṃ||
na iti maṃ jano jānātū’ti sāvake abbhatīte kāla-kate upapattīsu vyākaroti: ‘asu amutra upapanno||
asu amutra upapanno’ ti.|| ||

Santi ca kho Anuruddhā kula-puttā saddhā uḷāravedā uḷārapāmojjā1 ‘te taṃ sutvā tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharanti.|| ||

Tesantaṃ Anuruddhā hoti dīgha-rattaṃ hitāya sukhāya.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhu suṇāti: ‘itthannāmo bhikkhu kāla-kato2 so Bhagavatā vyākato ‘aññāya saṇṭhahī’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto vā||
‘evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evampañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya [466] cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuno phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhu suṇāti: ‘itthannāmo bhikkhu kāla-kato||
so Bhagavatā vyākato: pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā opapātiko tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto3 vā: ‘evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evampañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuno phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhu suṇāti: ‘itthannāmo bhikkhu kāla-kato||
so Bhagavatā vyākato tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā rāga-dosa-mohānaṃ tanuttā Sakad’āgāmī||
sakideva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhassantaṃ karissatī’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto3 vā.|| ||

Evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evampañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuno phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhu suṇāti: ‘itthannāmo bhikkhu kāla-kato||
so Bhagavatā vyākato tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā Sot’āpanno avinipāta-dhammo niyato sambodhi-parāyaṇo’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto vā: ‘evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evampañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuno phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhunī suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā bhikkhunī kāla-katā||
sā Bhagavatā vyākatā : ‘aññāya saṇṭhahī’ ti.|| ||

Sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā: ‘evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā ahosi iti pi||
evampaññā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārinī sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipīti.|| ||

Sā tassā saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussarantī tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuniyā phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhunī suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā bhikkhunī kāla-katā1||
sā Bhagavatā vyākatā pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā opapātikā tattha parinibbāyinī anāvatti-dhammā tasmā lokā’ ti.|| ||

Sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā.|| ||

‘Evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā ahosi iti pi||
evampaññā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārinī sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipīti.|| ||

Sā tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussarantī tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuniyā phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhunī suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā bhikkhunī kāla-katā||
sā Bhagavatā vyākatā: ‘tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā rāga-dosa-mohānaṃ tanuttā Sakad-āgāminī||
sakideva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhassantaṃ karissatī’ ti.|| ||

Sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā.|| ||

‘Evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā ahosi iti pi||
evampaññā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārinī sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipī’ ti.ti.|| ||

Sā tassā saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussarantī tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuniyā phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā bhikkhunī suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā bhikkhunī kāla-katā||
sā Bhagavatā vyākatā ‘tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā Sot’āpannā avinipāta-dhammā niyatā sambodhi-parāyaṇā’ ti.|| ||

[467] sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā.|| ||

‘Evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃpaññā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārinī sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipīti.|| ||

Sā tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussarantī tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā bhikkhuniyā phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā upāsako suṇāti:’itthannāmo upāsako kāla-kato||
so Bhagavatā vyākato: pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā opapātiko tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto vā: ‘evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi.|| ||

Evaṃdhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi.|| ||

Evaṃpañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā upāsakassa phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā upāsako suṇāti: ‘itthannāmo upāsako kāla-kato||
so Bhagavatā vyākato: tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā rāga-dosa-mohānaṃ tanuttā Sakad’āgāmī||
sakideva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhassantaṃ karissatī’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto vā: ‘evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi.|| ||

Evaṃdhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi.|| ||

Evaṃpañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā upāsakassa phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā upāsako suṇāti: itthannāmo upāsako kāla-kato||
so Bhagavatā vyākato: ‘tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā Sot’āpanno avinipāta-dhammo niyato sambodhi-parāyaṇo’ ti.|| ||

So kho panassa āyasmā sāmaṃ diṭṭho vā hoti anussavasuto vā: ‘evaṃsīlo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi.|| ||

Evaṃdhammo so āyasmā ahosi iti pi.|| ||

Evaṃpañño so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārī so āyasmā ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimutto so āyasmā ahosi itipīti.|| ||

So tassa saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussaranto tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā upāsakassa phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā upāsikā suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā upāsikā kāla-katā1 sā Bhagavatā vyākatā: pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā opapātikā tattha parinibbāyinī anāvatti-dhammā tasmā lokā’ ti.|| ||

Sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā: ‘evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃpaññā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārinī [468] sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipīti.|| ||

Sā tassā saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussarantī tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā upāsikāya phāsu-vihāro hoti.

Idh’Ānuruddhā upāsikā suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā upāsikā kāla-katā sā Bhagavatā vyākatā: ‘tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā rāga-dosa-mohānaṃ tanuttā Sakad-āgāminī sakideva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhassantaṃ karissatī’ ti.|| ||

Sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā: ‘evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||

evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipīti.|| ||

Idh’Ānuruddhā upāsikā suṇāti: ‘itthannāmā upāsikā kāla-katā1 sā Bhagavatā vyākatā:’tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā Sot’āpannā avinipāta-dhammā niyatā sambodhi-parāyaṇā’ ti.|| ||

Sā kho panassā bhaginī sāmaṃ diṭṭhā vā hoti anussavasutā vā: ‘evaṃsīlā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ-dhammā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃpaññā sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃvihārinī sā bhaginī ahosi iti pi||
evaṃ vimuttā sā bhaginī ahosi itipīti.|| ||

Sā tassā saddhañca sīlañca sutañ ca cāgañca paññañca anussarantī tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharati.|| ||

Evam pi kho Anuruddhā upāsikāya phāsu-vihāro hoti.|| ||

Iti kho Anuruddhā Tathāgato na janakuhanatthaṃ||
na janalapanatthaṃ||
na lābha-sakkāra-silokānisaṃsatthaṃ||
na iti maṃ jano jānātū’ti sāvake abbhatīte kāla-kate upapattīsu vyākaroti: ‘asu amutra upapanno asū amutra upapanno’ ti.|| ||

Santi ca kho Anuruddhā kula-puttā saddhā uḷāravedā uḷārapāmojjā.|| ||

Te taṃ sutvā tathattāya cittaṃ upasaṃharanti.|| ||
