Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Rājagahe viharati Veḷuvane Kalandakanivāpe.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Sakuludāyi paribbājako Moranivāpe paribbājakārāme paṭivasati mahatiyā paribbājaka-parisāya saddhiṃ.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya Rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavato etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Atippago kho tāva Rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya carituṃ.|| ||

Yan nūn-ā-haṃ yena Moranivāpo paribbājakārāmo yena Sakuludāyi paribbājako,||
ten’upasaṅkameyyan’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā yena Moranivāpo paribbājakārāmo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Sakuludāyi paribbājako mahatiyā paribbājaka parisāya saddhiṃ nisinno hoti unnādiniyā uccā-saddāya [30] mahā-saddāya aneka-vihitaṃ tiracchāna-kathaṃ kathentiyā, seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

kumbha-ṭ-ṭhāna-kathaṃ||
pubba-peta-kathaṃ||

lok’akkhāyikaṃ samudda-k-khāyikaṃ iti-bhav-ā-bhava-kathaṃ iti vā.|| ||

Addasā kho Sakuludāyi paribbājako Bhagavantaṃ dūrato va āga-c-chantaṃ;||
disvāna sakaṃ parisaṃ saṇṭhapesi:|| ||

‘Appa-saddā bhonto hontu,||
mā bhonto saddam akattha.|| ||

Ayaṃ Samaṇo Gotamo āgacchati.|| ||

Appa-sadda-kāmo kho pana so āyasmā appa-saddassa vaṇṇa-vādī.|| ||

App eva nāma appa-saddaṃ parisaṃ viditvā upasaṅkamitabbaṃ maññeyyā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho te paribbājakā tuṇhī ahesuṃ.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā yena Sakuludāyi paribbājako, ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Atha kho Sakuludāyi paribbājako Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Etu kho bhante Bhagavā:|| ||

Sā-gataṃ bhante Bhagavato.|| ||

Cirassaṃ kho bhante Bhagavā imaṃ pariyāyam akāsi,||
yad idaṃ idh’āgamanāya.|| ||

Nisīdatu bhante Bhagavā,||
idam āsanaṃ paññattan’ ti.|| ||

Nisīdi Bhagavā paññatte āsane.|| ||

Sakuludāyi pi kho paribbājako aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho Sakuludāyi paribbājakaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

‘Kāya nu’ttha Udāyi,||
etarahi kathāya sanni-sinnā?|| ||

Kā ca pana vo antarā kathā vippakatā ti?’|| ||

‘Tiṭṭhat’esā bhante kathā yāya mayaṃ etarahi kathāya sanni-sinnā.|| ||

N’esā, bhante, kathā Bhagavato dullabhā bhavissati pacchā pi savaṇāya.|| ||

Yadāhaṃ, bhante, imaṃ parisaṃ anupasaṅkanto homi,||
athāyaṃ parisā aneka-vihitaṃ tiracchāna-kathaṃ kathentī nisinnā hoti.|| ||

Yadā ca kho ahaṃ, bhante,||
imaṃ parisaṃ upasaṅkanto homi,||
athāyaṃ parisā mamaṃ yeva mukhaṃ ullokentī nisinnā hoti:|| ||

“Yaṃ no samaṇo Udāyi dhammaṃ bhāsissati,||
taṃ no sossāmā” ti.|| ||

Yadā [31] pana bhante Bhagavā imaṃ parisaṃ upasaṅkanto hoti,||
atha ahañ c’eva ayañ ca parisā Bhagavato va mukhaṃ ullokento nisinnā homa:|| ||

“Yaṃ no Bhagavā dhammaṃ bhāsissati,||
taṃ no sossāmā” ti.|| ||

‘Tena h’, Udāyi,||
taṃ yev’ettha paṭibhātu,||
yathā maṃ paṭibhāseyyā’ ti.|| ||

Purimāni, bhante, divasāni purimatarāni sabbaññū sabba-dassāvī aparisesaṃ ñāṇa-dassanaṃ paṭijānamāno:|| ||

“Carato ca me tiṭṭhato ca suttassa ca jāgarassa ca satataṃ samitaṃ ñāṇa-dassanaṃ pacc’upatthikan” ti.|| ||

So mayā pubbantaṃ ārabbha pañhaṃ puṭṭho samāno aññen’aññaṃ paṭicari,||
bahiddhā kathaṃ apanāmesi,||
kopañ ca dosañ ca a-p-paccayañ ca pātvākāsi.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante,||
Bhagavantaṃ yeva ārabbha pīti udapādi:|| ||

“Aho nūna Bhagavā,||
aho nūna Sugato,||
yo imesaṃ dhammānaṃ kusalo” ti.|| ||

‘Ko pan’eso, Udāyi,||
sabbaññū sabbādassāvī aparisesaṃ ñāṇa-dassanaṃ paṭijānamāno:|| ||

“Carato ca me tiṭṭhato ca suttassa ca jāgarassa ca satataṃ samitaṃ ñāṇa-dassanaṃ pacc’upatthikan” ti,||
yo tayā pubbantaṃ ārabbha pañhaṃ puṭṭho samāno aññen’aññaṃ paṭicari,||
bahiddhā kathaṃ apanāmesi kopañ ca dosañ ca a-p-paccayañ ca pātvākāsī’ ti?|| ||

‘Nigaṇṭho, bhante, Nātaputto’ ti.|| ||

Yo kho Udāyi,||
aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussareyya,||
seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Ekam pi jātiṃ,||
dve pi jātiyo,||
tisso pi jātiyo||
catasso pi jātiyo||
pañca pi jātiyo||
dasa pi jātiyo||
vīsatim pi jātiyo||
tiṃsam pi jātiyo||
cattārīsam pi jātiyo||
paññāsam pi jātiyo||
jāti-satam pi||
jāti-sahassam pi||
jāti-sata-sahassam pi||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe||
aneke pi vivaṭṭa-kappe||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe||
amutr’āsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ-gotto||
evaṃ-vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||
evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedi||
evam-āyu-pariyanto||
so tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ||
tatrā p’āsiṃ||
evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ-gotto||
evaṃ-vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||
evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedi||
evamāyupariyanto||
so tato cuto idh’ūpapanno’ ti.|| ||

Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussareyya,||
so vā maṃ pubbantaṃ ārabbha pañhaṃ puccheyya,||
taṃ vā’haṃ pubbantaṃ ārabbha pañhaṃ puccheyyaṃ;||
so vā me pubbantaṃ ārabbha pañhassa veyyākaraṇena cittaṃ ārādheyya,||
tassa vā’haṃ pubbantaṃ ārabbha pañhassa veyyākaraṇena cittaṃ ārādheyyaṃ;||
so kho, Udāyi,||
dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passeyya cavamāne upapajjamāne,||
hine paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kammupage satte pajānāti:|| ||

“Ime vata bhonte sattā kāya-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
vacī-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
mano-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
ariyānaṃ upavādakā micchā-diṭṭhikā micchā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ Nirayaṃ upapannā;||
ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāya-sucaritena samannāgatā||
vacī-sucaritena samannāgatā||
mano-sucaritena samannāgatā||
ariyānaṃ anupavādakā sammā-diṭṭhikā sammā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upannā” ti.|| ||

Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne,||
hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kamm’ūpage satte pajāneyya;||
so vā maṃ aparantaṃ ārabbha [32] pañhaṃ puccheyya,||
taṃ vā’haṃ aparantaṃ ārabbha pañhaṃ puccheyyaṃ:||
so vā me aparantaṃ ārabbha pañhassa veyyākaraṇena cittaṃ ārādheyya,||
tassa vā’haṃ aparantaṃ ārabbha pañhassa veyyākaraṇena cittaṃ ārādheyyaṃ.|| ||

Api c’, Udāyi,||
tiṭṭhatu pubbanto,||
tiṭṭhatu aparanto.|| ||

Dhammaṃ te desessāmi:|| ||

‘Imasmiṃ sati,||
idaṃ hoti;||
imass’uppādā idaṃ uppajjati,||
imasmiṃ asati,||
idaṃ na hoti;||
imassa nirodhā imaṃ nirujjhatī’ ti.|| ||

Ahaṃ, Bhante, yāvatakam pi me iminā atta-bhāvena paccanubhūtaṃ,||
tam pi nappahomi sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ anussarituṃ:|| ||

Kuto panāhaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarissāmi,||
seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Ekam pi jātiṃ,||
dve pi jātiyo,||
tisso pi jātiyo||
catasso pi jātiyo||
pañca pi jātiyo||
dasa pi jātiyo||
vīsatim pi jātiyo||
tiṃsam pi jātiyo||
cattārīsam pi jātiyo||
paññāsam pi jātiyo||
jāti-satam pi||
jāti-sahassam pi||
jāti-sata-sahassam pi||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe||
aneke pi vivaṭṭa-kappe||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe||
amutr’āsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ-gotto||
evaṃ-vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||

so tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ||
tatrā p’āsiṃ||

so tato cuto idh’ūpapanno’ ti.|| ||

Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarissāmi seyyathā pi Bhagavā.|| ||

Ahaṃ hi bhante etarahi paṃsu pisācakampi na passāmi:|| ||

Kuto panāhaṃ dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passeyya cavamāne upapajjamāne,||
hine paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kammupage satte pajānāti:|| ||

“Ime vata bhonte sattā kāya-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
vacī-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
mano-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
ariyānaṃ upavādakā micchā-diṭṭhikā micchā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ Nirayaṃ upapannā;||

Api c’, Udāyi, tiṭṭhatu pubbanto,||
tiṭṭhatu aparanto:|| ||

Dhammaṃ desessāmi:|| ||

“Imasmiṃ sati,||
idaṃ hoti;||
imass’uppādā idaṃ uppajjati,||
imasmiṃ asati,||
idaṃ na hoti;||
imassa nirodhā imaṃ nirujjhatī” ti;||
tañ ca pana me bhiyyoso-mattāya na pakkhāyati.|| ||

App’eva nāmāhaṃ, bhante, sake ācariyake Bhagavato cittaṃ ārādheyyaṃ pañhassa veyyākaraṇenā’ ti.

Kin ti pana te Udāyi,||
sake ācariyake hotī ti?|| ||

Ambhākaṃ, bhante,||
sake ācariyake evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Ayaṃ paramo vaṇṇo,||
ayaṃ paramo vaṇṇo’ ti.|| ||

Yam pana te etaṃ, Udāyi, sake ācariyake evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Ayaṃ paramo vaṇṇo,||
ayaṃ paramo vaṇṇo’ ti.|| ||

Katamo so paramo vaṇṇo’ ti?|| ||

‘Yasmā, bhante, vaṇṇā añño vaṇṇo uttaro vā paṇītataro vā n’atthi,||
so paramo vaṇṇo’ ti.|| ||

‘Katamo pana so, Udāyi, vaṇṇo,||
yasmā vaṇṇā añño vaṇṇo uttaritaro vā paṇītataro vā n’atthi’ ti?|| ||

[33] ‘Yasmā, bhante, vaṇṇā añño vaṇṇo uttaritaro vā paṇītataro vā n’atthi,||
so paramo vaṇṇo’ ti.|| ||

‘Dīghā pi kho te esā, Udāyi, phareyya.|| ||

“Yasmā, bhante, vaṇṇā añño vaṇṇo uttaritaro vā paṇitataro vā n’atthi,||
so paramo vaṇṇo” ti vadesi;||
tañ ca vaṇṇaṃ na paññāpesi.|| ||

Seyyathā pi, Udāyi,||
puriso evaṃ vadeyya:|| ||

“Ahaṃ yā imasmiṃ jana-pade jana-pada-kalyāṇī,||
taṃ icchāmi taṃ kāmemī” ti.|| ||

Tam enaṃ evaṃ vadeyyuṃ:|| ||

“Ambho purisa,||
yaṃ tvaṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ icchasi kāmesi,||
jānāsi taṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇī:||
khattiyi vā||
brāhmaṇī vā||
vessī vā||
suddi vā” ti?|| ||

Iti puṭṭho “no” ti vadeyya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ vadeyyuṃ:|| ||

“Ambho purisa,||
yaṃ tvaṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ icchasi kāmesi,||
janāsi taṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ:||
evannāmā evaṃ-gottā iti vā” ti?|| ||

Iti puṭṭho “no” ti vadeyya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ vadeyyuṃ:|| ||

“Ambho purisa,||
yaṃ tvaṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ icchasi kāmesi,||
janāsi taṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ:||
dīghā vā||
rassā vā||
majjhamā vā||
kāḷi vā||
sāmā vā||
maṅguracchavī vā” ti?|| ||

Iti puṭṭho “no” ti vadeyya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ vadeyyuṃ:|| ||

“Ambho purisa,||
yaṃ tvaṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ icchasi kāmesi,||
janāsi taṃ jana-pada-kalyāṇiṃ:||
amukasmiṃ gāme vā||
nigame vā||
nagare vā” ti?|| ||

Iti pūṭṭho “no” ti vadeyya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ evaṃ vadeyyuṃ:|| ||

“Ambho purisa,||
yaṃ tvaṃ na jānāsi na passasi,||
taṃ tvaṃ icchasi kāmesī” ti?|| ||

Iti puṭṭho “Āmā” ti vadeyya.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Nanu evaṃ sante tassa purisassa appāṭihīrakataṃ bhāsitaṃ sampajjatī’ ti?|| ||

‘Addhā kho, bhante,||
evaṃ sante tassa purisassa appāṭihīrakataṃ bhāsitaṃ sampajjatī’ ti.|| ||

‘Evam eva kho tvaṃ Udāyi:|| ||

“Yasmā bhante, vaṇṇā añño vaṇṇo uttarītaro vā paṇītataro vā n’atthi,||
so paramo vaṇṇo” ti vadesi,||
tañ ca vaṇṇaṃ na paññāpesī’ ti.|| ||

 


 

‘Seyyathā pi bhante,||
maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato paṇḍukambale nikkhitto bhāsati ca tapati ca virocati ca;||
evaṃ vaṇṇo attā hoti arogo param maraṇā’ ti.|| ||

 


 

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yo vā maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato paṇḍukambale nikkhitto [34] bhāsati ca tapati ca virocati ca;||
yo vā ratt’andhakāra’timisāya kimi khajjopaṇako, —||
imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ katamo vaṇṇo abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti?|| ||

‘Yvāyaṃ, bhante, ratt’andhakāra’timisāya kimi khajjopaṇako,||
ayaṃ imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yo vā ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ kimi khajjopaṇako,||
yo vā ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ tela-p-padīpo,||
imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ katamo vaṇṇo abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti?|| ||

‘Yvāyaṃ, bhante, ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ tela-p-padīpo,||
ayaṃ imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yo vā ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ tela-p-padīpo,||
yo vā ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ mahā aggi-k-khandho,||
imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ katamo vaṇṇo abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti?|| ||

‘Yvāyaṃ, bhante, ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ mahā aggi-k-khandho,||
ayaṃ imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yo vā ratt’andhakāra’timisāyaṃ mahā aggi-k-khandho,||
yā vā rattiyā paccūsa-samayaṃ viddhe vigata-valāhake deve osadhitārakā,||
imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ katamo vaṇṇo abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti?|| ||

‘Yvāyaṃ bhante, rattiyā paccūsa-samayaṃ viddhe vigata-valāhake deve osadhītārakā,||
ayaṃ imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yo vā rattiyā paccūsa-samayaṃ viddhe vigata-valāhake deve osaditārakā,||
yo vā tadahu’posathe paṇṇarase viddhe vigata-valāhake deve abhido aḍḍharattisamayaṃ cando,||
imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ katamo vaṇṇo abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti?|| ||

‘Yvāyaṃ bhante, tadahu’posathe paṇṇarase viddhe vigata-valāhake deve abhido aḍḍharattisamayaṃ cando,||
ayaṃ imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti.|| ||

[35] ‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yo vā tadahu’posathe paṇṇarase viddhe vigata-valāhake deve abhido aḍḍharattisamayaṃ cando,||
yo vā vassānaṃ pacchime māse sarada-samaye viddhe vigata-valāhake deve abhido majjhantikasamayaṃ suriyo,||
imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ katamo vaṇṇo abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti?|| ||

‘Yvāyaṃ, bhante, vassānaṃ pacchime māse sarada-samaye viddhe vigata-valāhake deve abhido majjhantikasamayaṃ suriyo,||
ayaṃ imesaṃ ubhinnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā’ ti.|| ||

‘Ato kho te, Udāyi, bahūhi bahutarā devā,||
ye imesaṃ candima-suriyānaṃ ābhā nānubhonti,||
tyāhaṃ pajānāmi.|| ||

Atha ca panāhaṃ na vadāmi:|| ||

“Yasmā vaṇṇā añño vaṇṇo uttaritaro vā paṇītataro cā n’atthi” ti.|| ||

Atha ca pana tvaṃ, Udāyi:|| ||

“Yvāyaṃ vaṇṇo kiminā khajjopaṇakena hīnataro ca patikiṭṭhataro ca,||
so paramo vaṇṇo ti vadesi;||
tañ ca vaṇṇaṃ na paññāpesī” ti.|| ||

‘Acch’idaṃ Bhagavā kathaṃ.|| ||

Acch’idaṃ Sugato kathan’ ti.|| ||

‘Kiṃ pana tvaṃ Udāyi,||
evaṃ vadesi:|| ||

“Acch’idaṃ Bhagavā kathaṃ.|| ||

Acch’idaṃ Sugato kathan”‘? ti|| ||

‘Ambhākaṃ bhante, sake ācariyake evaṃ hoti:|| ||

“Ayaṃ paramo vaṇṇo,||
ayaṃ paramo vaṇṇo” ti.|| ||

Te mayaṃ bhante, Bhagavatā sake ācariyake samanuyuñjiyamānā samanugāhiyamānā samanubhāsiyamānā rittā tucchā aparaddhā’ ti.|| ||

 


 

‘Kiṃ pan’, Udāyi, atthi ekanta-sukho loko?|| ||

Atthi ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti?|| ||

‘Amhākaṃ, bhante, sake ācariyake evaṃ hoti:|| ||

“Atthi ekanta-sukho loko,||
atthi ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā”‘ ti.|| ||

‘Katamā pana sā, Udāyi, ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti?|| ||

‘Idha bhante, ekacco pāṇ-ā-tipātaṃ pahāya pāṇ-ā-tipātā paṭivirato hoti,||
adinn’ādānaṃ pahāya adinn’ādānā paṭivirato hoti,||
kāmesu micchā-cāraṃ pahāya kāmesu micchā-cārā paṭivi- [36] rato hoti,||
musā-vādaṃ pahāya musā-vādā paṭivirato hoti,||
aññataraṃ vā pana tapoguṇaṃ samādāya vattati.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho sā, bhante, ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yasmi samaye pāṇ-ā-tipātaṃ pahāya||
pāṇ-ā-tipātā paṭivirato hoti,||
ekanta-sukhī vā tasmiṃ samaye attā hoti sukha-dukkhī vā’ ti?|| ||

‘Sukha-dukkhī bhante’.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yasmiṃ samaye adinn’ādānaṃ pahāya||
adinn’ādānā paṭivirato hoti,||
ekanta-sukhī vā tasmiṃ samaye attā hoti sukha-dukkhī vā’ ti?|| ||

‘Sukha-dukkhī bhante’.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yasmiṃ samaye kāmesu micchā-cāraṃ pahāya||
kāmesu micchā-cārā paṭivirato hoti,||
ekanta-sukhī vā tasmiṃ samaye attā hoti sukha-dukkhī vā’ ti?|| ||

‘Sukha-dukkhī bhante’.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yasmiṃ samaye musā-vādāṃ pahāya||
musā-vādā paṭivirato hoti,||
ekanta-sukhi vā tasmiṃ samaye attā hoti sukha-dukkhī vā’ ti?|| ||

‘Sukha-dukkhī bhante’.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Yasmiṃ samaye aññataraṃ tapoguṇaṃ samādāya vattati,||
ekanta-sukhī vā tasmiṃ samaye attā hoti sukha-dukkhī vā’ ti?|| ||

‘Sukha-dukkhī bhante’.|| ||

‘Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Udāyi?|| ||

Api nu kho vokiṇṇa-sukha-dukkhaṃ paṭipadaṃ āgamma ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyā hotī’ ti?|| ||

‘Acch’idaṃ Bhagavā kathaṃ.|| ||

Acch’idaṃ Sugato kathan’ ti.|| ||

‘Kiṃ pana tvaṃ Udāyi,||
evaṃ vadesi:|| ||

“Acch’idaṃ Bhagavā kathaṃ.|| ||

Acch’idaṃ Sugato kathan”‘? ti|| ||

‘Amhākaṃ, bhante, sake ācariyake evaṃ hoti:|| ||

“Atthi ekanta-sukho loko,||
atthi ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā” ti.|| ||

[37] ‘Atthi kho Udāyi, ekanta-sukho loko;||
atthi ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti.|| ||

‘Katamā pana sā, bhante, ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti?|| ||

Idh’, Udāyi, bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ||
paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ||
dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati.|| ||

Sato ca sampajāno sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

Yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:|| ||

‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’|| ||

ti taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho sā, Udāyi,||
ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti|| ||

‘Na kho sā, bhante,||
ākāravatī paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāya.|| ||

Sacchikato hi’ssa bhante.|| ||

Ettāvatā ekanta-sukho loko hotī’ ti.|| ||

‘Na khvāssa, Udāyi,||
ettāvatā ekanta-sukho loko sacchi-kato hoti;||
ākāravatītv’eva sā paṭipadā ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāyā’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Sakuludāyissa paribbājakassa parisā unnādinī uccā-sadda mahā-saddā ahosi:|| ||

‘Ettha mayaṃ anassāma sācariyakā;||
ettha mayaṃ anassāma sācariyakā;||
na mayaṃ ito bhiyyo utatritaraṃ pajānāmā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Sakuludāyi paribbājako te paribbājake appasadde katvā bhagantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Kittāvatā pan’assa, bhante, ekanta-sukho loko sacchi-kato hotī’ ti?|| ||

Idhūdāyi, bhikkhū sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā,||
pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ||
catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Yāvatā devatā ekanta-sukhaṃ lokaṃ upapannā,||
tāhi devatāhi saddhiṃ santiṭṭhati sallapati sākacchaṃ samāpajjati.|| ||

Ettāvatā khvāssa, Udāyi,||
ekanta-sukho loko sacchi-kato hotī’ ti.|| ||

‘Etassa nūna, bhante,||
ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū Bhagavati Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī’ ti?|| ||

‘Na kho, Udāyi, etassa ekanta-sukhassa lokassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Atthi kho Udāyi,||
aññe ca dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca,||
yesaṃ sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī’ ti.|| ||

[38] Katame pana te, bhante,||
dhammā uttarītarā ca paṇītatarā ca,||
yesaṃ sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū Bhagavati Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī’ ti?|| ||

‘Idh’, Udāyi, Tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno Sugato loka-vidū,||
anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathī,||
Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā.|| ||

So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti:|| ||

Ādi-kalyāṇaṃ majjhe-kalyāṇaṃ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ,||
kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto.|| ||

So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā Tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati.|| ||

So tena saddhā-paṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

Sambādho gharāvāso rajo-patho,||
abbhokāso pabbajjā,||
na-y-idaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekanta-paripuṇṇaṃ ekanta-parisuddaṃ saṅkhalikhitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ carituṃ,||
yan nūn-ā-haṃ kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyanti.|| ||

So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya,||
appaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya||
mahantaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya||
kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno bhikkhūnaṃ sikkhāsājivasamāpanno pāṇ-ā-tipātaṃ pahāya||
pāṇ-ā-tipātā paṭivirato hoti,||
nihita-daṇḍo nihita-sattho lajji dayā-panno sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī viharati.|| ||

Adinn’ādānaṃ pahāya||
adinn’ādānā paṭivirato hoti,||
dinn’ādāyī dinna-pāṭikaṅkhī athenena suci-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Abrahma-cariyaṃ pahāya||
brahma-cārī hoti ārā-cārī,||
virato methunā gāma-dhammā.|| ||

Musā-vādaṃ pahāya||
musā-vādā paṭivirato hoti,||
sacca-vādī sacca-sandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa.|| ||

Pisunaṃ vācaṃ pahāya||
pisunāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,||
ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya,||
amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya,||
iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā,||
samagg’ārāmo samaggarato samagga-nandi samagga-karaṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya||
pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,||
yā sā vācā neḷā kaṇṇa-sukhā pemanīyā hadayaṃgamā porī bahu-jana-kantā bahu-jana-manāpā,||
tathā-rūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Sampha-p-palāpaṃ pahāya||
sampha-p-palāpā paṭivirato hoti,||
kāla-vādī bhūta-vādī attha-vādī dhamma-vādī vinaya-vādī,||
nidhāna-vatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyanta-vatiṃ attha-saṃhitaṃ.|| ||

So bījagāma-bhūta-gāma-samārambhā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Eka-bhattiko hoti ratt’ūparato,||
virato vikāla-bhojanā.|| ||

Nacca-gīta-vādita-visūka-dassanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Mālā-gandha-vilepanadhāraṇa-maṇḍana-vibhūsana-ṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Uccā-sayana-mahā-sayanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Jātarūpa-rajatapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmakadhaññapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmakamaṃsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Itthikumārikapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dāsidāsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ajeḷakapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kukkuṭasūkarapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Hatthi-gavāssa-vaḷavāpaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Khetta-vatthupaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dūteyyapahīnagaman-ā-nuyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kaya-vikkayā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Tulā-kūṭa-kaṃsakuṭa-mānakūṭā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ukkoṭana-vañcana-nikati-sāciyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Chedana-vadha-bandhana-viparāmosa-ālopa-sahasākārā paṭivirato hoti.

So santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihārikena cīvarena,||
kucchi-parihārikena piṇḍa-pātena,||
so yena yen’eva pakkamati,||
samādāy’eva pakkamati.|| ||

Seyyathā pi nāma pakkhi sakuṇo yena yen’eva ḍeti,||
sapattabhāro va ḍeti.|| ||

Evam evaṃ bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihārikena cīvarena,||
kucchi-parihārikena piṇḍa-pātena,||
yena yen’eva pakkamati,||
samādāy’eva pakkamati.|| ||

So iminā ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajja-sukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

So cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇam-enaṃ cakkhu’ndriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati cakkhu’ndriyaṃ,||
cakkhu’ndriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ sot’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati sot’indriyaṃ,||
sotendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So ghānena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ ghānendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati ghānendriyaṃ,||
ghān’endriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ jivhendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati jivhendriyaṃ,||
jivhendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phūsitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ kāyendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati kāyendriyaṃ,||
kāyendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ manendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvaraṃ paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati manendriyaṃ,||
manendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So iminā ariyena indriya-saṃvarena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ abyāsekasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

So abhikkante paṭikkante sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
ālokite vilokite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
sammiñjite pasārite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
saṅghāṭipatta-cīvaradhāraṇe sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
uccāra-passāvakamme sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhī-bhāve sampajāna-kārī hoti.|| ||

So iminā ca ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriya-saṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena sati-sampajaññena samannāgato vivittaṃ sen’āsanaṃ bhajati,||
araññaṃ rukkha-mūlaṃ pabbataṃ kandaraṃ giri-guhaṃ susānaṃ vana-pattaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ.|| ||

So pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā,||
ujuṃ kāyaṃ panidhāya,||
parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭha-petvā.|| ||

So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya||
vigat-ā-bhijjhena cetasā viharati,||
abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vyāpāda-padosaṃ pahāya||
avyāpanna-citto viharati,
sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī||
Vyāpāda-padosā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Thīna-middaṃ pahāya||
vigatatīnamiddo viharati,||
āloka-saññi sato sampajāno||
thīna-middā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccaṃ pahāya||
anuddhato viharati,||
ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto,||
uddhacca-kukkuccā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vici-kicchaṃ pahāya||
tiṇṇa-vici-kiccho viharati,||
akathaṃ-kathi kusalesu dhammesu,||
vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

So ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahāya cetaso upakkilese paññāya dubbalī-karaṇe,||
vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Udāyi,||
dhammo uttarītaro ca paṇītataro ca,||
yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ, Udāyi,||
bhikkhu vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā||
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ||
avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ||
samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ||
dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Udāyi,||
dhammo uttarītaro ca paṇītataro ca,||
yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati||
sato ca sampajāno sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti||
yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:|| ||

‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’|| ||

ti taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Udāyi,||
dhammo uttarītaro ca paṇītataro ca,||
yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Sukhassa ca pahānā||
dukkhassa ca pahānā,||
pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā||
adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ||
catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Udāyi,||
dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigatupakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte pubbe nivāsānu-s-satiñāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarati,||
seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Ekam pi jātiṃ,||
dve pi jātiyo,||
tisso pi jātiyo||
catasso pi jātiyo||
pañca pi jātiyo||
dasa pi jātiyo||
vīsatim pi jātiyo||
tiṃsam pi jātiyo||
cattārīsam pi jātiyo||
paññāsam pi jātiyo||
jāti-satam pi||
jāti-sahassam pi||
jāti-sata-sahassam pi||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe||
aneke pi vivaṭṭa-kappe||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe||
amutr’āsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ-gotto||
evaṃ-vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||
evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedi||
evam-āyu-pariyanto||
so tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ||
tatrā p’āsiṃ||
evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ-gotto||
evaṃ-vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||
evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedi||
evamāyupariyanto||
so tato cuto idh’ūpapanno’ ti.|| ||

Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Udāyi,||
dhammo uttarītaro ca paṇītataro ca,||
yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigat’ūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte sattāṇaṃ cūtupapātañāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passeyya cavamāne upapajjamāne,||
hine paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kammupage satte pajānāti:|| ||

“Ime vata bhonte sattā kāya-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
vacī-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
mano-du-c-caritena samannāgatā||
ariyānaṃ upavādakā micchā-diṭṭhikā micchā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ Nirayaṃ upapannā;||
ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāya-sucaritena samannāgatā||
vacī-sucaritena samannāgatā||
mano-sucaritena samannāgatā||
ariyānaṃ anupavādakā sammā-diṭṭhikā sammā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upannā” ti.|| ||

Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kamm’ūpage satte pajānāti.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Udāyi,||
dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca,||
yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

So “idaṃ dukkhan” ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ayaṃ dukkha-samudayo” ti||
yatā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ayaṃ dukkha-nirodho” ti||
yatā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ayaṃ dukkha-nirodha-gāmiṇīpaṭipadā” ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ime āsavā” ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ayaṃ āsava- [39] samudayo” ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ayaṃ āsava-nirodho” ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

“Ayaṃ āsava-nirodha-gāminī-paṭipadā” ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

Tassa evañ jānato evam passato kām’āsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

Bhavāsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

Avijjāsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttam iti ñāṇaṃ hoti:|| ||

Khīṇā jāti,||
vusitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ,||
kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ,||
nāparaṃ itthattāyā ti pajānāti.|| ||

Ayaṃ pi kho, Udāyi,||
dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca,||
yassa sacchi-kiriyāhetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Ime kho, Udāyi,||
dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca,||
yesaṃ sacchi-kiriyā hetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī’ ti.

Evaṃ vutte Sakuludāyi paribbājako Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Abhikkantaṃ bhante,||
abhikkantaṃ bhante.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante,||
nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya,||
paṭiccannaṃ vā vicareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Maggaṃ ācikkheyya,||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya:||
cakkhu-manto rūpāni dakkhintī ti.|| ||

Evam evaṃ Bhagavatā aneka-pariyāyena Dhammo pakāsito.|| ||

Es’āhaṃ, bhante, Bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi||
Dhammañ ca||
bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca.|| ||

Labheyyāhaṃ, bhante, Bhagavato santike pabbajjaṃ,||
labheyyaṃ upasampadan’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Sakuludāyissa paribbājakassa parisā Sakuludāyiṃ paribbājakaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Mā bhavaṃ Udāyi,||
samaṇe Gotame Brahma-cariyaṃ cari,||
mā bhavaṃ Udāyi,||
ācariyo hutvā antevāsīvāsaṃ vasi.|| ||

Seyyathā pi nāma udaka-maṇīko hutvā udañcaniko assa.|| ||

Evaṃ sampadam etaṃ bhoto Udāyissa bhavissati.|| ||

Mā bhavaṃ Udāyi samaṇe Gotame Brahma-cariyaṃ cari.|| ||

Mā bhavaṃ Udāyi ācariyo hutvā antevāsīvāsaṃ vasī’ ti.|| ||

Iti h’idaṃ Sakuludāyissa paribbājakassa parisā Sakuludāyiṃ paribrabājakaṃ antarāyam akāsi Bhagavati brahma-cariye ti.|| ||
