Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā Ānando Rājagahe viharati Veḷuvane Kalandakanivāpe aciraparinibbute Bhagavati.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena rājā Māgadho Ajātasattu Vedehi-putto Rājagahaṃ paṭisaṅkhārāpeti rañño pajjotassa āsaṅkamāno.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā Ānando pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya Rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmato Ānandassa etad ahosi: ‘atippago kho tāva Rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya carituṃ,||
yannun-ā-haṃ yena gopakaMoggallānassa brāhmaṇassa tammanto,||
yena Gopaka Moggallāno brāhmaṇo,||
ten’upasaṅkameyyan’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā Ānando yena gopakaMoggallānassa brāhmaṇassa kammanto,||
yena Gopaka Moggallāno brāhmaṇo,||
ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Addasā kho Gopaka Moggallāno brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ dūrato va āga-c-chantaṃ.|| ||

Disvāna āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Etu kho bhavaṃ Ānando,||
svāgataṃ bhoto Ānandassa,||
cirassaṃ kho bhavaṃ Ānando imaṃ pariyāyamkāsi yad idaṃ idh’āgamanāya.|| ||

Nisīdatu bhavaṃ Ānando,||
idam āsanaṃ paññattan’ ti.|| ||

Nisīdi kho āyasmā Ānando paññatte āsane.|| ||

Gopaka Moggallāno pi [8] kho brāhmaṇo aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Gopaka Moggallāno brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

Atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi tehi dhammehi sabbena sabbaṃ sabbathā sabbaṃ samannāgato,||
yehi dhammehi samannāgato so bhavaṃ Gotamo ahosi arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho’ ti.|| ||

N’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi tehi dhammehi sabbena sabbaṃ sabbathā sabbaṃ samannāgato,||
yehi dhammehi samannāgato so Bhagavā ahosi arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho.|| ||

So hi brāhmaṇa,||
Bhagavā anuppannassa Maggassa uppādetā,||
asañjātassa Maggassa sañjanetā anakkhātassa Maggassa akkhātā,||
Maggaññu Maggavidū Maggakovido.|| ||

Maggānugā ca pana etarahi sāvakā viharanti pacchā samannāgatā’ ti.|| ||

Ayañ ca h’idaṃ āyasmato Ānandassa gopakaMoggallānena brāhmaṇena saddhiṃ antarā kathā vippakatā hoti1.|| ||

Atha kho vassakāro brāhmaṇo magadhamahāmatto Rājagahe kammante anusaññāyamāno yena gopakaMoggallānassa brāhmaṇassa kammanto yen’āyasmā Ānando ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā Ānandena saddhiṃ sammodi,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho vassakāro brāhmaṇo magadhamahāmatto āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca: kāya nu’ttha bho Ānanda,||
etarahi kathāya sanni-sinnā,||
kā ca pana vo antarā kathā vippakatā’ ti?|| ||

Idha maṃ brāhmaṇa,||
Gopaka Moggallāno brāhmaṇo evam āha: ‘atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi tehi dhammehi sabbena sabbaṃ sabbathā sabbaṃ samannāgato,||
yehi dhammehi samannāgato so bhavaṃ Gotamo ahosi arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte ahaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
gopakaMoggallānaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ etad avocaṃ: ‘n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi tehi dhammehi sabbena sabbaṃ sabbathā sabbaṃ samannāgato,||
yehi dhammehi samannāgato so Bhagavā ahosi arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho so hi brāhmaṇa,||
Bhagavā anuppannassa Maggassa uppādetā,||
[9] asañjātassa Maggassa sañjanetā,||
anakkhātassa Maggassa akkhātā,||
Maggaññu Maggavidū Maggakovido,||
maggānugā ca pana etarahi sāvakā viharanti pacchā samannāgatā’ ti.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho no brāhmaṇa,||
gopakaMoggallānena brāhmaṇena saddhiṃ antarā kathā vippakatā.|| ||

Atha tvaṃ anuppatto’ ti.|| ||

Atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi tena bhotā Gotamena ṭhapito: ayaṃ vo mamaccayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ tumhe etarahi paṭidhāveyyāthāti4?|| ||

N’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ vo mamaccayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi paṭidhāveyyāmā’ ti.|| ||

Atthi pana kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi saṅghena sammato sambahulehi therehi bhikkhūhi ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ no Bhagavato accayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti,||
yaṃ tumhe etarahi paṭidhāveyyāthā’ti4?|| ||

N’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi saṅghena sammato sambahulehi therehi bhikkhuhi ṭhapito,||
ayaṃ no Bhagavato accayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti,||
yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi paṭidhāveyyāmā’ti4.|| ||

Evaṃ appaṭi-saraṇe ca pana bho Ānanda,||
ko hetu sāmaggiyā’ ti?|| ||

Na kho mayaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
appaṭi-saraṇā,||
sappaṭi-saraṇā mayaṃ brāhmaṇa dhammapaṭisaraṇā’ ti.|| ||

‘Atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi tena bhotā Gotamena ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ vo mamaccayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ tumhe etarahi paṭidhāveyyāthā’ ti.|| ||

Iti puṭṭho samāno: ‘n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ vo mamaccayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi paṭidhāveyyāmā’ti vadesi.|| ||

‘Atthi pana bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi saṅghena sammato sambahulehi therehi [10] bhikkhūhi ṭhapito: ayaṃ no Bhagavato accayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ tumhe etarahi paṭidhāveyyāthā’ ti.|| ||

Iti puṭṭho samāno: ‘n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi saṅghena sammato sambahulehi therehi bhikkhuhi ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ no Bhagavato accayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi paṭidhāveyyāmā’ti vadesi.|| ||

‘Evaṃ appaṭi-saraṇe ca pana bho Ānanda,||
ko hetu sāmaggiyā’ ti.|| ||

Iti puṭṭho samāno: “na kho mayaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
appaṭi-saraṇā sappaṭi-saraṇā mayaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
dhammapaṭisaraṇā’ti vadesi.|| ||

Imassa pana bho Ānanda,||
bhāsitassa kathaṃ attho daṭṭhabbo’ ti?|| ||

Atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
tena Bhagavā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena bhikkhūnaṃ sikkhāpadaṃ paññattaṃ,||
Pātimokkhaṃ uddiṭṭhaṃ.|| ||

Te mayaṃ tadah’uposathe yāvatikā ekaṃ gāmakkhettaṃ upanissāya viharāma.|| ||

Te sabbe ekajjhaṃ sannipatāma,||
sanni-patitvā yassa taṃ pavattati.|| ||

Taṃ ajjhasāma.|| ||

Tasmiṃ ce bhaññamāne hoti bhikkhussa āpatti,||
hoti vītikkamo,||
taṃ mayaṃ yathā-dhammaṃ yath’ānusiṭṭhaṃ kāremā’ ti.|| ||

Na kira no bhavanto kārenti.|| ||

Dhammo no kāretī ti.|| ||

Atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi yaṃ tumhe etarahi sakkarotha,||
garukarotha1,||
mānetha,||
pūjetha,||
sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya viharathā’ ti?|| ||

‘N’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi sakkaroma,||
garukaroma,||
mānema,||
pūjema,||
sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya viharāmā’ ti.|| ||

‘Atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi tena bhotā Gotamena ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ vo mamaccayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatīti yaṃ tumhe etarahi paṭidhāveyyāthā’ ti.|| ||

Iti puṭṭho samāno: ‘n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena ṭhapito: ‘ayaṃ vo mamaccayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi paṭidhāveyyāmā’ti vadesi.|| ||

‘Atthi pana bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhūpi saṅghena sammato sambahulehi therehi bhikkhūhi ṭhapito:|| ||

‘Ayaṃ no Bhagavato accayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti yaṃ tumhe etarahi paṭidhāveyyāthāti.|| ||

[11] iti puṭṭho samāno: ‘n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi saṅghena sammato sambahulehi therehi bhikkhuhi ṭhapito: ayaṃ no Bhagavato accayena paṭisaraṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti,||
yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi paṭidhāveyyāmā’ti vadesi.|| ||

Atthi nu kho bho Ānanda,||
eka bhikkhū pi yaṃ tumhe etarahi sakkarotha.|| ||

Garukarotha,||
mānetha,||
pūjetha,||
sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya viharathā’ti iti puṭṭho samāno: ‘n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
eka bhikkhū pi yaṃ mayaṃ etarahi sakkaroma garukaroma mānema pūjema.|| ||

Sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya viharāmā’ti vadesi.|| ||

Imassa pana bho Ānanda,||
bhāsitassa kathaṃ attho daṭṭhabboti.|| ||

Atthi kho brāhmaṇa,||
tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena dasa pasādanīyā dhammā akkhātā,||
yasmiṃ no ime dhammā saṃvijjanti.|| ||

Taṃ mayaṃ etarahi sakkaroma garukaroma mānema pūjema.|| ||

Sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya viharāma.|| ||

Katame dasa?|| ||

Idha brāhmaṇa,||
bhikkhu sīlavā hoti Pātimokkha-saṃvara-saṃvuto viharati ācāra-gocara-sampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhaya-dassāvī samādāya sikkhati sikkhā-padesu.|| ||

Bahu-s-suto hoti suta-dharo suta-sanni-cayo,||
ye te dhammā ādi-kalyāṇā majjhe-kalyāṇā pariyosāna-kalyāṇā sātthā savyañjanā1 kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ abhivadanti,||
tathā-rūpāssa dhammā bahusutā honti,||
dhatā2 vacasā parivitā manas-ā-nupekkhitā diṭṭhiyā suppaṭi-viddhā.|| ||

Santuṭṭho hoti itarītarehi cīvara-piṇḍa-pāta-sen’āsana-gilāna-paccaya-bhesajja-parikkhārehi.|| ||

Catuṇṇaṃ jhānānaṃ ābhiceta-sikānaṃ diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihārānaṃ nikāma-lābhī hoti akiccha-lābhī akasira-lābhī.|| ||

Akenavihitaṃ iddhi-vidhaṃ pacc’anubhoti: ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti,||
bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti,||
āvibhāvaṃ tiro-bhāvaṃ tiro-kuḍḍaṃ tiro-pākāraṃ tiro-pabbataṃ asajja-māno gacchati seyyathā pi ākāse.|| ||

Paṭhaviyāpi ummujjanimmujjaṃ karoti seyyathā pi udake.|| ||

Udakepi abhijja-māne4 gacchati seyyathā pi paṭhaviyaṃ.|| ||

Ākāsepi [12] pallaṅkena caṅkamati5 seyyathā pi pakkhī sakuṇo.|| ||

Imepi candima-suriye evaṃ mahiddhike evaṃmah-ā-nubhāve pāṇinā parimasati,||
parimajjati.|| ||

Yāva Brahma-lokāpi kāyena vasaṃ vatteti.|| ||

Dibbāya sota-dhātuyā visuddhāya atikkanta mānusa-kāya1 ubho sadde suṇāti dibbe ca manuse ca ye dūre santike ca.|| ||

Parasattāṇaṃ para-puggalānaṃ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāti: sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Vīta-rāgaṃ vā cittaṃ vīta-rāgaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Sadosaṃ vā cittaṃ sadosaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Vīta-dosaṃ vā cittaṃ vīta-dosaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Samohaṃ vā cittaṃ samohaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Vīta-mohaṃ vā cittaṃ vīta-mohaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Saṅkhittaṃ vā cittaṃ saṅkhittaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Vikkhittaṃ vā cittaṃ vikkhittaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Mahaggataṃ vā cittaṃ mahaggataṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Amahaggataṃ vā cittaṃ amahaggataṃ cittanti pajānāti sa-uttaraṃ vā cittaṃ sa-uttaraṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Anuttaraṃ vā cittaṃ anuttaraṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Samāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ samāhitaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Asamāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ asamāhitaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Vimuttaṃ vā cittaṃ vimuttaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Avimuttaṃ vā cittaṃ avimuttaṃ cittanti pajānāti.|| ||

Anekavihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarati seyyath’īdaṃ: ekam pi jātiṃ dve pi jātiyo Tisso pi jātiyo catasso pi jātiyo pañca pi jātiyo dasa pi jātiyo vīsampi jātiyo tiṃsam pi jātiyo cattārīsam pi jātiyo paññāsam pi jātiyo jāti-satam pi jāti-sahassam pi jāti-sata-sahassam pi anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe anekepi vivaṭṭa-kappe anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe,||
amutrāsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo evaṃ-gotto evaṃ-vaṇṇo evam-āhāro evaṃ sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedī evam-āyu-pariyanto.|| ||

So tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ2,||
tatrāpāsiṃ evaṃ nāmo evaṃ-gotto evaṃ vaṇṇo evam-āhāro evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedī evam-āyu-pariyanto.|| ||

So tato cuto idh’ūpapanno’ti,||
iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarati.|| ||

Dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passati cavamāne uppajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kamm’ūpage satte pajānāti.|| ||

Āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ ceto-vimuttiṃ paññā-vimuttiṃ diṭṭhe’va dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ime kho brāhmaṇa,||
tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena dasa pasādanīyā dhammā akkhātā.|| ||

Yasmiṃ no ime dhammā saṃvijjanti,||
taṃ mayaṃ etarahi sakkaroma garukaroma3 mānema pūjema,||
sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya viharāmāti.|| ||

[13]Evaṃ vutte vassakāro brāhmaṇo magadhamahāmatto upĀnandaṃ senāpatiṃ āmantesi.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi bhavaṃ senāpati1,||
yadime evaṃ bhonto2 sakkātabbaṃ sakkaronti,||
garukātabbaṃ garu-karonti.|| ||

Mānetabbaṃ mānenti,||
pūjetabbaṃ pūjenti.|| ||

Tagghime bhonto sakkātabbaṃ sakkaronti,||
garukātabbaṃ garu-karonti,||
mānetabbaṃ mānenti,||
pūjetabbaṃ pūjenti.|| ||

Imañ ca hi te bhonto na sakkareyyuṃ,||
na garu-kareyyuṃ,||
na māneyyuṃ,||
na pūjeyyuṃ,||
atha kiñ carahi te bhonto sakkareyyuṃ,||
garu-kareyyuṃ,||
māneyyuṃ,||
pūjeyyuṃ,||
sakkatvā garukatvā upanissāya vihareyyunti.|| ||

Atha kho vassakāro brāhmaṇo magadhamahāmatto āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca: ‘kahaṃ pana bhavaṃ Ānando etarahi viharatī’ ti.|| ||

Veluvane kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa etarahi viharāmīti.|| ||

Kacci pana bho Ānanda,||
veluvanaṃ ramaṇīyañc’eva appa-saddañca appa-nigghosañca vijanavātaṃ manussarāhaseyyakaṃ3 paṭisallānasāruppanti.|| ||

Taggha brāhmaṇa,||
veluvanaṃ ramaṇīyañc’eva appa-saddañca appa-nigghosañca vijanavātaṃ manussarāhaseyyakaṃ paṭisallānasāruppaṃ yathā taṃ tumhādisehi rakkhakehi gopakehīti.|| ||

Taggha bho Ānanda,||
veluvanaṃ ramaṇīyañc’eva appa-saddañca appa-nigghosañca vijanavātaṃ manussarāhaseyyakaṃ paṭisallānasāruppaṃ yathā taṃ bhavantehi jhānasīlīhi.|| ||

Jhāyino c’eva bhavanto jhānasilinoca.|| ||

Ekam idāhaṃ bho Ānanda,||
samayaṃ so bhavaṃ Gotamo Vesāliyaṃ viharati Mahāvane Kūṭāgāra-sālāyaṃ.|| ||

Atha kho ahaṃ bho Ānanda,||
yena Mahāvanaṃ kūṭā-gārasālā,||
yena so bhavaṃ Gotamo,||
ten’upasaṅkamiṃ.|| ||

Tatra ca pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo aneka-pariyāyena jhānakathaṃ kathesi.|| ||

Jhāyī c’eva so bhavaṃ Gotamo ahosi jhānasīlī ca sabbañ ca pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo jhānaṃ vaṇṇesīti.|| ||

Na kho brāhmaṇa,||
so Bhagavā sabbaṃ jhānaṃ vaṇṇesi.|| ||

Nāpi so Bhagavā sabbaṃ jhānaṃ na vaṇṇesīti.|| ||

Kathaṃ-rūpañca [14] brāhmaṇa,||
so Bhagavā jhānaṃ na vaṇṇesi.|| ||

Idha brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco kāma-rāga-pariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati kāma-rāgaparetena.|| ||

Uppannassa ca kāma-rāgassa nissaraṇaṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti.|| ||

So kāma-rāgaṃ yeva antaraṃ karitvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati apajjhāyati.|| ||

vyāpāda-pariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati byapādaparetena.|| ||

Uppannassa ca vyāpādassa nissaraṇaṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti.|| ||

So vyāpādaṃ yeva antaraṃ karitvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati apajjhāyati.|| ||

Thīna-middhapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati thīna-middhaparetena.|| ||

Uppannassa ca thīna-middhassa nissaraṇaṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti.|| ||

So thīna-middhaṃ yeva antaraṃ karitvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati apajjhāyati.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati uddhacca-kukkuccaparetena.|| ||

Uppannassa ca uddhacca-kukkuccassa nissaraṇaṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti.So uddhacca-kukkuccaṃ yeva antaraṃ karitvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati apajjhāyati.|| ||

Vicikicchā-pariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati vicikicchāparetena.|| ||

Uppannāya ca vicikicchāya nissaraṇaṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti so vici-kicchaṃ yeva antaraṃ karitvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati apajjhāyati.|| ||

Eva-rūpaṃ kho brāhmaṇa,||
so Bhagavā jhānaṃ na vaṇṇesi.|| ||

Kathaṃ-rūpañca brāhmaṇa,||
so Bhagavā jhānaṃ vaṇṇesi.|| ||

Idha brāhmaṇa,||
bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhi-jaṃ pītsukhaṃ dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Pitiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti,||
yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ti taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Eva-rūpaṃ kho brāhmaṇa so Bhagavā jhānaṃ vaṇṇesīti.|| ||

Gārayhaṃ kira bho Ānanda,||
so bhavaṃ Gotamo jhānaṃ garahi.|| ||

Pāsaṃsaṃ pasaṃsi.|| ||

Handa ca’dāni mayaṃ bho Ānanda gacchāma bahu-kiccā mayaṃ bahu-karaṇiyāti.|| ||

Yassa dāni tvaṃ brāhmaṇa kālaṃ maññasīti.|| ||

[15] Atha kho vassakāro brāhmaṇo magadhamahāmatto āyasmato Ānandassa bhāsitaṃ abhinan’ditvā anumo-ditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā pakkāmi.|| ||

Atha kho gopakaMoggallano brāhmaṇo acīrapakkante vassakāre brāhmaṇe magadhamahāmatte āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca: ‘yaṃ no mayaṃ bhavantaṃ Ānandaṃ apucchimha1 taṃ no bhavaṃ Ānando na vyākāsīti.|| ||

Api nu te1 brāhmaṇa,||
avocumha: n’atthi kho brāhmaṇa eka bhikkhū pi tehi dhammehi sabbena sabbaṃ sabbathā sabbaṃ samannāgato,||
yehi dhammehi samannāgato so Bhagavā ahosi arahaṃ samāsambuddho.|| ||

So hi brāhmaṇa,||
Bhagavā anuppannassa Maggassa uppādetā,||
asañjātassa Maggassa sañjanetā,||
anakkhātassa Maggassa akkhātā,||
Maggaññu Maggavidu Maggakovido maggānugā ca pana etarahi sāvakā viharanti pacchā samannāgatāti.|| ||
