Kapilavatthusmiṃ piṇḍāya caritvā||
pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto||
yena Mahāvanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami||
divā-vihārāya.|| ||

Mahāvanaṃ ajjhoga-hetvā||
beluva-laṭṭhikāya mūle||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi.|| ||

Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā||
daṇḍam-olubbha eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho||
Daṇḍapāṇī Sakko Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Kiṃ vādī samaṇo,||
kim akkhāyī” ti?|| ||

“Yathā-vādī kho āvuso||
sa-devake loke||
sa-Mārake||
sa-brahmake,||
sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiyā pajāya||
sa-deva-manussāya||
na kenaci loke viggayha tiṭṭhati,||
yathā ca pana kāmehi||
visaṃyuttaṃ||
viharantaṃ||
taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ akathaṃ-kathiṃ||
chinna-kukkuccaṃ||
bhav-ā-bhave||
vīta-taṇhaṃ saññā nānusenti.|| ||

Evaṃ vādī kho ahaṃ āvuso||
evam akkhāyī” ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Daṇḍapāṇī Sakko||

[3] Atha kho Bhagavā sāyaṇha-samayaṃ||
patisallāṇā vuṭṭhito||
yena Nigrodhārāmo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Nisajja kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:|| ||

“Idh’āhaṃ bhikkhave pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā||
patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya||
Kapilavatthuṃ piṇḍāya pāvisiṃ.|| ||

Kapilavatthusmiṃ piṇḍāya caritvā||
pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto||
yena Mahāvanaṃ ten’upasaṅkamiṃ||
divā-vihārāya.|| ||

Mahāvanaṃ ajjhoga-hetvā||
beluva-laṭṭhikāya mūle||
divā-vihāraṃ nisīdiṃ.|| ||

Daṇḍapāṇī pi kho bhikkhave Sakko||
jaṅghā-vihāraṃ||
anucaṅkamamāno||
anuvicaramāno||
yena Mahāvanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Mahāvanaṃ ajjhoga-hetvā||

Upasaṅkamitvā mama saddhiṃ sammodi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho bhikkhave||
Daṇḍapāṇī Sakko maṃ etad avoca:|| ||

Daṇḍapāṇiṃ Sakkaṃ etad avocaṃ:|| ||

“Yathā-vādī kho āvuso||
sa-devake loke||
sa-Mārake||
sa-brahmake,||
sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiyā pajāya||
sadeva-manussāya||
na kenaci loke viggayha tiṭṭhati,||
yathā ca pana kāmehi||
visaṃyuttaṃ||
viharantaṃ||
taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ akathaṃ-kathiṃ||
chinna-kukkuccaṃ||
bhav-ā-bhave||
vīta-taṇhaṃ saññā nānusenti.|| ||

[4] Evaṃ vutte aññataro bhikkhu||
Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Kiṃ vādī pana bhante Bhagavā||
sa-devake loke||
sa-Mārake||
sa-brahmake,||
sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiyā pajāya||
sadeva-manussāya||
na kenaci loke viggayha tiṭṭhati?|| ||

Kathañ ca pana bhante Bhagavantaṃ kāmehi||
visaṃyuttaṃ||
viharantaṃ||
taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ akathaṃ-kathiṃ||
chinna-kukkuccaṃ||
bhav-ā-bhave||
vīta-taṇhaṃ saññā nānusentī” ti?|| ||

[5] “Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu||
purisaṃ papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti,||
ettha ce n’atthi abhinanditabbaṃ||
abhivaditabbaṃ||
ajjhosetabbaṃ,||
es’ev’anto rāg-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto paṭigh-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto [110] diṭṭh’ānusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto vicikicch-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto mān-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto bhava-rāg-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto avijj-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto daṇḍ’ādāna-Satth’ādāna-kalaha-viggaha-vivāda-tuvantuva-pesuñña-musā-vādānaṃ.|| ||

Etth’ete pāpakā akusalā dhammā||
aparisesā nirujjhantī” ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Idaṃ vatvā Sugato||
uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ pāvisi.|| ||

[6] Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ acira-pakkantassa Bhagavato etad ahosi:|| ||

“Idaṃ kho no āvuso Bhagavā||
saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā||
uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

‘Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu||
purisaṃ papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti,||
ettha ce n’atthi abhinanditabbaṃ||
abhivaditabbaṃ||
ajjhosetabbaṃ,||
es’ev’anto rāg-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto paṭigh-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto diṭṭh’ānusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto vicikicch-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto mān-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto bhava-rāg-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto avijj-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto daṇḍ’ādāna-Satth’ādāna-kalaha-viggaha-vivāda-tuvantuva-pesuñña-musā-vādānaṃ.|| ||

saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajeyyā” ti?|| ||

[7] Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ etad ahosi:|| ||

“Ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno||
Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito||
sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ.|| ||

Pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno||
imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Yan nūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma,||
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ||
etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā” ti?|| ||

[8] Atha kho te bhikkhū yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā Mahā Kaccānena saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu.|| ||

Samamodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etad avocuṃ:|| ||

“Idaṃ kho no āvuso Kaccāna Bhagavā||
saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā||
uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho.|| ||

‘Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu||
purisaṃ papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti,||
ettha ce n’atthi abhinanditabbaṃ||
abhivaditabbaṃ||

uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

“Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu||

ettha ce n’atthi abhinanditabbaṃ||
abhivaditabbaṃ||
ajjhosetabbaṃ,||

[111] pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā||
saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Yan nūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma,||
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā’ ti?|| ||

Vibhajatāyasmā Mahā Kaccāno” ti.|| ||

[9] “Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato||
sāravato ati-k-kamm’eva||
mūlaṃ ati-k-kamma||
khandhaṃ sākhāpalāse sāraṃ pariyesitabbaṃ maññeyya,||
evaṃ sampadam-idaṃ āyasmantānaṃ,||
Satthari sammukhī-bhūte||
taṃ Bhagavantaṃ atisitvā amhe||
etam atthaṃ paṭipucchitabbaṃ maññatha.|| ||

So h’āvuso Bhagavā jānaṃ jānāti,||
passaṃ passati,||
cakkhu-bhūto||
ñāṇa-bhūto||
dhamma-bhūto||
brahma-bhūto,||
vattā pavattā,||
atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā,||
dhammassāmi,||
Tathāgato.|| ||

So c’eva pan’etassa kālo ahosi yaṃ Bhagavantaṃ yeva etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha.|| ||

Yathā no Bhagavā vyākareyya,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāthā” ti.|| ||

[10] “Addh’āvuso Kaccāna Bhagavā jānaṃ jānāti,||
passaṃ passati,||
cakkhu-bhūto||
ñāṇa-bhūto||
dhamma-bhūto||
brahma-bhūto,||
vattā pavattā,||
atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā,||
dhammassāmi,||
Tathāgato.|| ||

So c’eva pan’etassa kālo ahosi yaṃ Bhagavantaṃ yeva etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāma.|| ||

Yathā no Bhagavā vyākareyya,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāma.|| ||

Api c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ,||
pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā||
saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa||
vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Vibhajat’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno agarukatvā” ti.|| ||

[11] “Tena h’āvuso suṇātha,||
sādhukaṃ manasi karotha,||
bhāsisasāmī” ti.|| ||

“Evam āvuso” ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Kaccānassa paccassosuṃ||
āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno etad avoca:|| ||

“Yaṃ kho no āvuso Bhagavā||
saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā||
vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā||
uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

‘Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu purisaṃ papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti,||
ettha ce n’atthi abhinanditabbaṃ abhivaditabbaṃ ajjhosetabbaṃ,||

[12] [1] Cakkhuñ c’āvuso paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhu-viññāṇaṃ,||
tiṇṇaṃ saṅgati phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
yaṃ vedeti taṃ [112] sañjānāti,||
yaṃ sañjānāti taṃ vitakketi||
yaṃ vitakketi taṃ papañceti,||
yaṃ papañceti tato nidānaṃ purisaṃ||
papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti||
atīt-ā-nāgata-pacc’uppannesu||
cakkhu-viññeyyesu rūpesu.|| ||

[2] Sotañ c’āvuso paṭicca sadde ca uppajjati sota-viññāṇaṃ,||
tiṇṇaṃ saṅgati phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
yaṃ vedeti taṃ sañjānāti,||
yaṃ sañjānāti taṃ vitakketi,||
yaṃ vitakketi taṃ papañceti,||
yaṃ papañceti tato nidānaṃ purisaṃ||
papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti||
atīt-ā-nāgata-pacc’uppannesu||
sota-viññeyyesu saddesu.|| ||

[3] Ghānañ c’āvuso paṭicca gandhe ca uppajjati ghāna-viññāṇaṃ,||
tiṇṇaṃ saṅgati phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
yaṃ vedeti taṃ sañjānāti,||
yaṃ sañjānāti taṃ vitakketi,||
yaṃ vitakketi taṃ papañceti,||
yaṃ papañceti tato nidānaṃ purisaṃ||
papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti||
atīt-ā-nāgata-pacc’uppannesu||
ghāna-viññeyyesu gandhesu.|| ||

[4] Jivhañ c’āvuso paṭicca rase ca uppajjati jivhā-viññāṇaṃ,||
tiṇṇaṃ saṅgati phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
yaṃ vedeti taṃ sañjānāti,||
yaṃ sañjānāti taṃ vitakketi,||
yaṃ vitakketi taṃ papañceti,||
yaṃ papañceti tato nidānaṃ purisaṃ||
papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti||
atīt-ā-nāgata-pacc’uppannesu||
jivhā-viññeyyesu rasesu.|| ||

[5] Kāyañ c’āvuso paṭicca phoṭṭhabbe ca uppajjati kāya-viññāṇaṃ,||
tiṇṇaṃ saṅgati phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
yaṃ vedeti taṃ sañjānāti,||
yaṃ sañjānāti taṃ vitakketi,||
yaṃ vitakketi taṃ papañceti,||
yaṃ papañceti tato nidānaṃ purisaṃ||
papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti||
atīt-ā-nāgata-pacc’uppannesu||
kāya-viññeyyesu phoṭṭhabbesu.|| ||

[6] Manañ c’āvuso paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati mano-viññāṇaṃ,||
tiṇṇaṃ saṅgati phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
yaṃ vedeti taṃ sañjānāti,||
yaṃ sañjānāti taṃ vitakketi,||
yaṃ vitakketi taṃ papañceti,||
yaṃ papañceti tatonidānaṃ purisaṃ||
papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti||
atīt-ā-nāgata-pacc’uppannesu||
mano-viññeyyesu dhammesu.|| ||

rūpe sati||
cakkhu-viññāṇe sati||
‘Phassa-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

Phassa-paññattiyā sati||
‘Vedanā-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

Vedanā-paññattiyā sati||
‘Saññā-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

Saññā-paññattiyā sati||
‘Vitakka-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

Vitakka-paññattiyā sati||
‘Papañca-saññā-saṅkhā-samudā-caraṇa-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

sadde sati||
sota-viññāṇe sati||
‘Phassa-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||

‘Vitakka-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||

Saññā-paññattiyā sati||
‘Vitakka-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

Vitakka-paññattiyā sati||
‘Papañca-saññā-saṅkhā-samudā-caraṇa-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||
ṭhānam etaṃ vijjati.|| ||

rase sati||
jivhā-viññāṇe sati||
‘Phassa-paññattiṃ paññā-pessatī’ ti||

saṅ- [113] khittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

‘Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu purisaṃ papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti,||
ettha ce n’atthi abhinanditabbaṃ abhivaditabbaṃ ajjhosetabbaṃ,||
es’ev’anto rāg-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto paṭigh-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto diṭṭh’ānusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto vicikicch-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto mān-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto bhava-rāg-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto avijj-ā-nusayānaṃ,||
es’ev’anto daṇḍ’ādāna-Satth’ādāna-kalaha-viggaha-vivāda-tuvantuva-pesuñña-musā-vādānaṃ,||
etth’ete pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhantī’ ti,|| ||

imassa kho ahaṃ āvuso Bhagavatā||
saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa||
evaṃ vitthārena atthaṃ ājānāmi.|| ||

Ākaṅkha-mānā ca pana tumhe āyasmanto Bhagavantaṃ yeva upasaṅkamitvā||
etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha.|| ||

Yathā no Bhagavā vyākaroti||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāthā” ti.|| ||

[16] Atha kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Kaccānassa bhāsitaṃ||
abhinan’ditvā anumo-ditvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā||
yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū Bhagavantaṃ etad avocuṃ:|| ||

[17] “Yaṃ kho no bhante Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

Idaṃ kho no āvuso bhante Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

‘Yato nidānaṃ bhikkhu purisaṃ papañca-saññā-saṅkhā samud’ācaranti,||

Ko nu kho imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajeyyā” ti?|| ||

“Tesaṃ no bhante amhākaṃ etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Yan nūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma,||
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā’ ti?|| ||

[18] Atha kho mayaṃ bhante yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkamimha,||
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ [114] Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipucchimha.|| ||

Tesaṃ no bhante āyasmatā Mahā Kaccānena||
imehi ākārehi||
imehi padehi||
vyañjanehi attho vibhatto” ti.|| ||

[19] “Paṇḍito bhikkhave Mahā Kaccāno,||
mahā-pañño bhikkhave Mahā Kaccāno.|| ||

Mañ’ce pi tumhe bhikkhave etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha,||
aham pi taṃ evam evaṃ vyākareyyaṃ,||
yathā taṃ Mahā Kaccānena vyākataṃ eso c’ev’etassa attho,||
evañ ca naṃ dhārethā” ti.|| ||

[20] Evaṃ vutte āyasmā Ānando Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante puriso jigha-c-chā-du-b-balyapareto madhupiṇḍikaṃ adhigaccheyya,||
so yato yato sāyeyya labhetha sāduṃ rasaṃ asecanakaṃ,||
evam eva kho bhante cetaso bhikkhu dabbajātiko yato yato imassa dhamma-pariyāyassa paññāya atthaṃ upapari-k-kheyya labheth’eva atta-manataṃ,||
labhetha cetaso pasādaṃ.|| ||

Ko nāmo ayaṃ bhante dhamma-pariyāyo” ti?|| ||

“Tasmātiha tvaṃ Ānanda,||
imaṃ dhamma-pariyā’yaṃ Madhupiṇḍikapariyāyo t’eva naṃ dhārehī” ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Attamano āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ ‘abhinandī’ ti.|| ||
