Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā aṅguttarāpesu viharati āpaṇaṃ nāma aṅguttarāpānaṃ nigamo.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya āpaṇaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.|| ||

Āpaṇe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto yena aññataro vana-saṇḍo ten’upasaṅkami divā-vihārāya.|| ||

Taṃ vana-saṇḍaṃ ajjhoga-hetvā1 aññatarasmiṃ rukkha-mūle divā-vihāraṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Āyasmāpi kho udāyi pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya āpaṇaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.|| ||

Āpaṇe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto yena so vana-saṇḍo ten’upasaṅkami divā-vihārāya,||
taṃ vana-saṇḍaṃ ajjhoga-hetvā1 aññatarasmiṃ rukkha-mūle divā-vihāraṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmato udāyissa raho-gatassa patisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ‘bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā dukkha-dhammānaṃ apahattā bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā sukhadhammānaṃ upahattā,||
bahunnaṃ2 vata no Bhagavā akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ apahattā bahunnaṃ2 vata no Bhagavā kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ upahattā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā udāyi sāyaṇha-samayaṃ patisallānā vuṭṭhito yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ [448] nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā udāyi Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca.|| ||

” Idha mayhaṃ bhante raho-gatassa patisallīnassa evaṃ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ‘ bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā dukkha-dhammānaṃ apahattā bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā sukhadhammānaṃ upahattā,||
bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ apahattā bahunnaṃ2 vata no Bhagavā kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ upahattā’ ti.|| ||

Mayaṃ hi bhante pubbe sāyañc’eva bhuñjāma pāto ca divā ca vikāle.|| ||

Ahuṃ kho so bhante samayo yaṃ Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: ‘iṅgha tumhe bhikkhave etaṃ divāvikāla-bhojanaṃ pajahathā’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante ahudve aññathattaṃ ahu3 domanassaṃ.|| ||

Yampi no saddhā gahapatikā4 divā vikāle paṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ denti.|| ||

Tassapi no Bhagavā pahānam-āha.|| ||

Tassapi no Sugato paṭinissaggamāhāti.

Te mayaṃ bhante Bhagavati pemañca gāravañca hiriñca ottappañca sampassamānā evaṃ taṃ divāvikāla-bhojanaṃ pajahimhā1.|| ||

Te mayā bhante sāyañ cava bhuñjāma pāto ca.|| ||

Ahu kho so bhante samayo yaṃ Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: iṅgha tumhe bhikkhave etaṃ rattiṃ vikāla-bhojanaṃ pajahathā’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante ahu-d-eva aññathattaṃ.|| ||

Ahu domanassaṃ yampi no imesaṃ dvinnaṃ bhattāṇaṃ paṇītasaṅkhātataraṃ tassapi no Bhagavā pahānam-āha.|| ||

Tassapi no Sugato paṭinissaggamāhā’ ti.|| ||

Bhūta-pubbaṃ bhante aññataro puriso divā sūpeyyaṃ labhitvā evam āha: ‘handa ca imaṃ nikkhipatha,||
sāyaṃ sabb’eva samaggā bhuñjissāmā’ ti.|| ||

Yā kāci bhante saṅkhatiyo sabbā tā rattiṃ,||
appā divā.|| ||

Te mayaṃ bhante Bhagavati pemañca gāravañca hiriñca ottappañca sampassamānā evaṃ taṃ rattiṃ vikāla-bhojanaṃ pajahimhā.|| ||

Bhūta-pubbaṃ bhante bhikkhū ratt-andhakāra-timisāyaṃ piṇḍāya carantā candanikampi pavisanti.|| ||

Oligallepi papatanti.|| ||

Kaṇṭakāvaṭṭampi2 ārohanti,||
suttampi gāviṃ ārohantiṃ māṇavehipi samāga-c-chanti kata-kammehipi akata-kammehipi.|| ||

Mātu-gāmopi te asad’dhammena nimanteti.|| ||

Bhūtapubbāhaṃ bhante ratt-andhakāra-timisāyaṃ piṇḍāya carāmi.|| ||

Addasā kho maṃ bhante aññatarā itthī vijjantarikāya bhājanaṃ dhovantī,||
disvā maṃ bhītā vissaramakāsi: ‘abbhuṃ me3,||
pisāco vata man’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte ahaṃ bhante taṃ itthiṃ etad avocaṃ: n-ā-haṃ bhagini,||
pisāco,||
bhikkhu [449] piṇḍāya ṭhito’ ti.|| ||

Bhikkhussa ātumāri,||
bhikkhussa mātumāri,||
varante bhikkhu tiṇhena govikantanena kucchi parikanto natv’eva4 yaṃ5 ratt-andhakāra-timisāyaṃ kucchihetu piṇḍāya carasīti6.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante tadanussarato evaṃ hoti: ‘bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā dukkha-dhammānaṃ apahattā,||
bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā sukhadhammānaṃ upahattā,||
bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ apahattā.|| ||

Bahunnaṃ vata no Bhagavā kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ upahattā’ ti.|| ||

Evam eva panudāyi idh’ekacce mogha-purisā: ‘idaṃ pajahathā’ti mayā vucca-mānā te evam āhaṃsu: ‘kimpanimassa appa-mattakassa ora-mattakassa adhisallikhatevāyaṃ samaṇo’ ti.|| ||

Te tañ’c’eva na-p-pajahanti.|| ||

Mayi ca a-p-paccayaṃ upaṭṭhāpenti.|| ||

Ye ca bhikkhū sikkhā-kāmā,||
tesaṃ taṃ udāyi hoti balavaṃ bandhanaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanaṃ thiraṃ bandhanaṃ apūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ thullo7 kaliṅgaro,|| ||

Seyyathā pi udāyi laṭukikā sakuṇikā pūtilatāya bandhanena baddhā tatth’eva vadhaṃ vā bandhaṃ vā maraṇaṃ vā āgameti.|| ||

Yo nu kho udāyi evaṃ vadeyya: ‘yena sā laṭukikā sakuṇikā pūtilatāya bandhanena baddhā tatth’eva vadhaṃ vā bandhaṃ vā maraṇaṃ vā āgameti,||
taṃ hi tassā abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhanan’ ti.|| ||

Sammā nu kho so udāyi vadamāno vadeyyā’ ti.|| ||

No h’etaṃ bhante.|| ||

Yena sā bhante laṭukikā sakuṇikā pūtilatāya bandhanena baddhā tatth’eva vadhaṃ vā bandha vā maraṇaṃ vā āgameti.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassā balavaṃ bandhanaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanaṃ thiraṃ bandhanaṃ apūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ thullo1 kaliṅgaro’ ti.|| ||

Evam eva panudāyi idh’ekacce mogha-purisā: ‘idaṃ pajahathā’ti mayā vucca-mānā te evam āhaṃsu: kiṃ panimassa appa-mattakassa ora-mattakassa adhisallikhatevāyaṃ samaṇo’ ti.|| ||

Te tañ’c’eva na-p-pajahanti.|| ||

Idha panudāyi ekacce kula-puttā: ‘idaṃ pajahathā’ti [450] mayā vucca-mānā te evam āhaṃsu: ‘kimpanimassa appa-mattakassa ora-mattakassa pahātabbassa yassa no Bhagavā pahānam-āha.|| ||

Yassa no Sugato paṭinissaggamāhā’ ti.|| ||

Te tañ’c’eva pajahanti.|| ||

Mayi ca na a-p-paccayaṃ upaṭṭhāpenti.|| ||

Ye ca bhikkhū sikkhā-kāmā.|| ||

Te taṃ pahāya appossukkā pannalomā paradavuttā2 migabhūtena cetasā viharanti.|| ||

Tesantaṃ udāyi hoti abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhanaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi udāyi rañño nāgo īsādanto ubbu’havābhijāto3 saṅgāmāvacaro daḷhehi varattehi4 bandhanehi baddho īsakaṃ yeva kāyaṃ sannāmetvā tāni bandhanāni sañchinditvā sampadā’etvā yena kāmaṃ pakkamati.|| ||

Yo nu kho udāyi evaṃ vadeyya: yehi so rañño nāgo īsādanto ubbu’havābhijāto3 saṅgāmāvacaro daḷhehi varattehi bandhanehi baddho īsakaṃ yeva kāyaṃ sannāmetvā tāni bandhanāni sañchinditvā sampadā’etvā yena kāmaṃ pakkamati.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassa balavaṃ bandhanaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanaṃ thiraṃ bandhanaṃ apūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ thullo1 kaliṅgaroti,||
sammā nu kho so udāyi vadamāno vadeyyāti no h’etaṃ bhante.|| ||

Ye hi so bhante rañño nāgo īsādanto ubbu’havābhijāto3 saṅgāmāvacaro daḷhehi varattehi bandhanehi baddho īsakaṃ yeva kāyaṃ sannāmetvā tāni bandhanāni sañchinditvā sampadā’etvā yena kāmaṃ pakkamati.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassa abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhananti.|| ||

Evam eva kho udāyi idh’ekacce kula-puttā idaṃ pajahathā’ti mayā vucca-mānā te evam āhaṃsu: kiṃ panimassa appa-mattakassa ora-mattakassa pahātabbassa yassa no Bhagavā pahānam-āha.|| ||

Yassa no Sugato paṭinissaggamāhāti.|| ||

Te tañ’c’eva pajahanti.|| ||

Mayi ca na a-p-paccayaṃ upaṭṭhāpenti.|| ||

Ye ca bhikkhū sikkhā-kāmā te tampahāya appossukkā pannalomā paradavuttā1 migabhūtena cetasā viharanti.|| ||

Tesaṃ taṃ udāyi hoti abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhanaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi udāyi puriso daḷiddo assako anāḷhiyo2 tassassa ekaṃ agārakaṃ oluggaviluggaṃ kākātidāyiṃ na parama-rūpaṃ.|| ||

Ekā khaṭopikā olugga-viluggā na paramarūpā,||
ekissā [451] kumbhiyā dhañña-sama-vāpakaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ,||
ekā jāyikā na paramarūpā.|| ||

So ārāma-gataṃ bhikkhuṃ passeyya sudhota-hattha-pādaṃ manuññaṃ bhojanaṃ bhuttāviṃ sitāya chāyāya nisinnaṃ adhicitte yuttaṃ.|| ||

Tassa evam assa: sukhaṃ vata bho sāmaññaṃ,||
ārogyaṃ vata bho sāmaññaṃ,||
so vatassaṃ3 yohaṃ kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyanti.|| ||

So na sakkuṇeyya ekaṃ agārakaṃ oluggaviluggaṃ kākātidāyiṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
ekaṃ khaṭopikaṃ oluggaviluggaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
ekissā kumbhiyā dhañña-sama-vāpakaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
ekaṃ jāyikaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jituṃ.|| ||

Yo nu kho udāyi evaṃ vadeyya: yehi so puriso bandhanehi baddhona Sakkoti,||
ekaṃ agārakaṃ olugga-viluggaṃ kākātidāyiṃ na parama-rūpaṃ.|| ||

Ekaṃ khaṭopikaṃ oluggaviluggaṃ na paramarūpā,||
ekissā kumbhiyā dhañña-sama-vāpakaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ,||
ekaṃ jāyikaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jituṃ.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassa abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhananti.|| ||

Sammā nu 4 kho so udāyi vadamāno vadeyyāti.|| ||

No h’etaṃ bhante .|| ||

Ye hi so bhante puriso bandhanehi baddho na Sakkoti ekaṃ agārakaṃ oluggaviluggaṃ kākātidāyiṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
ekaṃ khaṭopikaṃ oluggaviluggaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
ekissā kumbhiyā dhañña-sama-vāpakaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya,||
ekaṃ jāyikaṃ na parama-rūpaṃ pahāya kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jituṃ.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassa balavaṃ bandhanaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanaṃ thiraṃ bandhanaṃ apūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ thullo kaliṅgaroti.|| ||

Ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā|| ||

Evam eva kho udāyi idh’ekacce mogha-purisā idaṃ pajahathā’ti mayā vucca-mānā te evam āhaṃsu: kiṃ panimassa appa-mattakassa ora-mattakassa.|| ||

Adhisallikhatevāyaṃ samaṇo’ ti.|| ||

Te tañ’c’eva na-p-pajahanti.|| ||

Mayi ca a-p-paccayaṃ upaṭṭhāpenti ye ca bhikkhū sikkhā-kāmā tesantaṃ udāyi hoti balavaṃ bandhanaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanaṃ thiraṃ bandhanaṃ apūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ thullo kaliṅgaro.|| ||

Seyyathā pi udāyi gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā aḍḍho [452] maha-d-dhano mahā-bhogo,||
nekānaṃ nikkhagaṇānaṃ cayo nekānaṃ dhaññagaṇānaṃ cayo nekānaṃ khettagaṇānaṃ cayo nekānaṃ vatthugaṇānaṃ cayo nekānaṃ bhariyāgaṇānaṃ cayo nekānaṃ dāsagaṇānaṃ cayo nekānaṃ dāsigaṇānaṃ cayo,||
so ārāma-gataṃ bhikkhuṃ passeyya sudhota-hattha-pādaṃ manuññaṃ bhojanaṃ bhuttāviṃ sītāya chāyāya nisinnaṃ adhicitte yuttaṃ,||
tassa evam assa: sukhaṃ vata bho sāmaññaṃ,||
ārogyaṃ vata bho sāmaññaṃ,||
so vatassaṃ yohaṃ kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyan’ ti.|| ||

So sakkuṇeyya nekāni nikkhagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dhaññagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni khettagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni vatthugaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni bhariyāgaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dāsagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dāsi gaṇāni pahāya kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jituṃ.|| ||

Yo nu kho udāyi evaṃ vadeyya: yehi so gahapati vā gahapati putto vā bandhanehi baddho Sakkoti nekāni nikkhagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dhaññagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni khettagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni vatthugaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni bhariyāgaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dāsagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dāsigaṇāni pahāya kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jituṃ taṃ hi tassa balavaṃ bandhanaṃ daḷhaṃ bandhanaṃ thiraṃ bandhanaṃ apūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ thullo kaliṅgaroti.|| ||

Sammā nu1 kho so udāyi vadamāno vadeyyā’ ti.|| ||

No h’etaṃ bhante.|| ||

Ye hi so bhante gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā bandhanehi baddho Sakkoti nekāni nikkhagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dhaññagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni khettagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni vatthugaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni bhariyāgaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dāsagaṇāni pahāya,||
nekāni dāsigaṇāni pahāya kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jituṃ.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassa abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhananti.|| ||

Evam eva kho udāyi idh’ekacce kula-puttā,||
idaṃ pajahathāti mayā vucca-mānā te evam āhaṃsu: ‘ kiṃ panimassa appa-mattakassa ora-mattakassa pahātabbassa yassa no Bhagavā pahānam-āha.|| ||

Yassa no Sugato paṭinissaggamāhā’ti te tañ’c’eva pajahanti.|| ||

Mayi ca na a-p-paccayaṃ upaṭṭhāpenti.|| ||

Ye ca bhikkhū sikkhā-kāmā [453] te taṃ pahāya appossukkā pannalomā paradavuttā migabhūtena cetasā viharanti.|| ||

Tesaṃ taṃ udāyi hoti abalaṃ bandhanaṃ dubbalaṃ bandhanaṃ pūtikaṃ bandhanaṃ asārakaṃ bandhanaṃ.|| ||

Cattāro me udāyi puggalā santo saṃvijj’amānā lokasmiṃ,||
katame cattāro: idhūdāyi ekacco puggalo upadhipahānāya paṭipanno hoti upadhipaṭinissaggāya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ upadhipahānāya paṭipannaṃ upadhipaṭinissaggāya upadhipaṭisaññuttā sarasaṅkappā samud’ācaranti.|| ||

So te adhivāseti,||
na-p-pajahati,||
na vinodeti.|| ||

Na vyantī-karoti.|| ||

Na anabhāvaṃ gameti.|| ||

Imaṃ kho ahaṃ udāyi puggalaṃ saññutto’ti vadāmi no visaññutto.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu? indriyavemattatā hi me udāyi imasmiṃ puggale viditā.|| ||

Idha panudāyi ekacco puggalo upadhipahānāya paṭipanno hoti upadhipaṭinissaggāya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ upadhipahānāya paṭipannaṃ upadhipaṭinissaggāya,||
upadhipaṭisaññuttā sarasaṅkappā samud’ācaranti.|| ||

So te n’ādhivāseti,||
pajahati,||
vinodeti,||
vyantī-karoti,||
anabhāvaṃ gameti.|| ||

Imampi kho ahaṃ udāyi puggalaṃ saññuttoti vadāmi no visaññutto.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu? indriyavemattatā hi me udāyi imasmiṃ puggale viditā.|| ||

Idha panudāyi ekacco puggalo upadhipahānāya paṭipanno hoti upadhipaṭinissaggāya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ upadhipahānāya paṭipannaṃ upadhipaṭinissaggāya kadāci karahaci satisammosā upadhipaṭisaññuttā sarasaṅkappā samud’ācaranti.|| ||

Dandho udāyi satuppādo.|| ||

Atha kho naṃ khippam’eva pajahati,||
vinodeti,||
vyantī-karoti,||
anabhāvaṃ gameti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi udāyi puriso divasasantatte ayokaṭāhe dve vā tīṇi vā udakaphusitāni nipāteyya.|| ||

Dandho udāyi udakaphusitānaṃ nipāto.|| ||

Atha kho naṃ khippam’eva parikkhayaṃ pariyādānaṃ gaccheyya.|| ||

Evam eva kho udāyi idh’ekacco puggalo upadhipahānāya paṭipanno hoti upadhipaṭinissaggāya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ upadhipahānāya paṭipannaṃ upadhipaṭinissaggāya,||
kadāci karahaci satisammosā upadhipaṭisaññuttā sarasaṅkappā samud’ācaranti.|| ||

Dandho udāyi satuppādo.|| ||

Atha kho naṃ khippam’eva pajahati,||
vinodeti,||
vyantī-karoti,||
anabhāvaṃ gameti.|| ||

Imampi kho ahaṃ udāyi puggalaṃ saññutto’ti vadāmi no visaññutto,||
[454] taṃ kissa hetu: indriyavemattatā hi me udāyi imasmiṃ puggale viditā.|| ||

Idha panudāyi ekacco puggalo ‘upadhi dukkhassa mūla’nti iti viditvā nirupadhi hoti upadhi-saṅkhaye vimutto,||
imaṃ kho ahaṃ udāyi puggalaṃ visaññutto’ti vadāmi no saññutto.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu? indriyavemattatā hi me udāyi imasmiṃ puggale viditā.|| ||

Pañca kho ime udāyi kāma-guṇā.|| ||

Katame pañca? cakkhu-viññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piya-rūpā kām’ūpasaṃ-hitā rajanīyā1.|| ||

Sota-viññeyyā saddā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piya-rūpā kām’ūpasaṃ-hitā rajanīyā1.|| ||

Ghāna-viññeyyā gandhā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piya-rūpā kām’ūpasaṃ-hitā rajanīyā1.|| ||

Jivhā-viññeyyā rasā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piya-rūpā kām’ūpasaṃ-hitā rajanīyā1.|| ||

Kāya-viññeyyā phoṭṭhabbā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piya-rūpā kām’ūpasaṃ-hitā rajanīyā1.|| ||

Ime kho udāyi pañca kāma-guṇā.|| ||

Yaṃ kho udāyi ime pañca kāma-guṇe paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṃ somanassaṃ,||
idaṃ vuccati kāma-sukhaṃ mīḷha-sukhaṃ puthu-j-janasukhaṃ anariyasukhaṃ na sevitabbaṃ2 na bhāvetabbaṃ na bahulī-kātabbaṃ.|| ||

Bhāyitabbaṃ etassa sukhassāti vadāmi.|| ||

Idhūdāyi bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

Yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti ‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbe va somanassa domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā sati pārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Idaṃ vuccati nekkhamma-sukhaṃ paviveka-sukhaṃ upasama-sukhaṃ sambodha-sukhaṃ āsevitabbaṃ bhāvetabbaṃ bahulī-kātabbaṃ.|| ||

Na bhāyitabbaṃ etassa sukhassāti vadāmi.|| ||

Idhūdāyi bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Idhūdāyi bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati.|| ||

Ko ca tassa samati-k-kamo: idhūdāyi bhikkhu sabbaso rūpa-saññānaṃ samati-k-kamā paṭigha-saññānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā nānatta-saññānaṃ amanasikārā ananto ākāsoti Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ tassa samati-k-kamo.|| ||

Idam pi kho ahaṃ udāyi analanti vadāmi,||
pajahathāti vadāmi,||
samati-k-kamathāti vadāmi.|| ||

Ko ca tassa samati-k-kamo: idhūdāyi bhikkhu sabbaso Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma ‘Anantaṃ viññāṇan’ ti Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati,||
ayaṃ tassa samati-k-kamo,||
idam pi kho ahaṃ udāyi analanti vadāmi,||
pajahathāti vadāmi,||
samati-k-kamathāti vadāmi.|| ||

Ko ca tassa samati-k-kamo: idhūdāyi bhikkhu sabbaso Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma ‘N’atthi kiñcī’ ti Ākiñcaññ’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ tassa samati-k-kamo.|| ||

Idam pi kho ahaṃ udāyi analanti vadāmi,||
pajahathāti vadāmi,||
samati-k-kamathāti vadāmi.|| ||

Ko ca tassa samati-k-kamo: idhūdāyi bhikkhu sabbaso Ākiñcaññ’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatanaṃ [456] upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ tassa samati-k-kamo,||
idam pi kho ahaṃ udāyi|| ||

Analanti vadāmi,||
pajahathāti vadāmi,||
samati-k-kamathāti vadāmi.|| ||

Ko ca tassa samati-k-kamo: idhūdāyi bhikkhu sabbaso N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma saññā-vedayita-nirodhaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ tassa samati-k-kamo.|| ||

Iti kho ahaṃ udāyi N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatanassapi pahānaṃ vadāmi.|| ||

Passasi no tvaṃ udāyi taṃ saṃyojanaṃ anuṃ vā thūlaṃ vā,||
yassāhaṃ no pahānaṃ vadāmīti.|| ||

No h’etaṃ bhante’ ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā atta-mano āyasmā udāyi Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ ‘abhinandī’ ti.|| ||
