Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā cātumāyaṃ viharati āmalakīvane tena kho pana samayena Sāriputta-Moggallāna-pamukhāni pañca-mattāni bhikkhu-satāni cātumaṃ anuppattāni honti Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||
Te ca āgantukā bhikkhū nevāsikehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ paṭisammoda-mānā sen’āsanāni paññā-paya-mānā patta-cīvarāni paṭisāmaya-mānā uccā-saddā mahā-saddā ahesuṃ.|| ||
Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ āmantesi1: ‘ke pan’ete Ānanda uccā-saddā mahā-saddā kevaṭṭā maññe maccavilope’ ti.|| ||
‘Etāni bhante Sāriputta-Moggallāna-pamukhāni pañca-mattāni bhikkhu-satāni cātumaṃ anuppattāni Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||
Te āgantukā bhikkhū nevāsikehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ paṭisammoda-mānā sen’āsanāni paññā-paya-mānā patta-cīvarāni paṭisāmaya-mānā uccā-saddā mahā-saddā’ ti.|| ||
Tena h’Ānanda mama vacanena te bhikkhū āmantehi.|| ||
Satthāyasmante āmantetī’ ti.|| ||
“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paṭi-s-sutvā yena te bhikkhū ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||
Upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etad avoca: ‘Satthāyasmante āmantetī’ ti.|| ||
Evam āvuso ti kho [457] te bhikkhū āyasmato Ānandassa paṭi-s-sutvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||
Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||
Eka-m-antaṃ nisinne kho te bhikkhū Bhagavā etad avoca: ‘kin nu tumhe bhikkhave uccā-saddā mahā-saddā kevaṭṭā maññe maccha vilope’ ti.|| ||
Imāni bhante Sāriputta-Moggallāna-pamukhāni pañca-mattāni bhikkhu-satāni cātumaṃ anuppattāni Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||
Teme āgantukā bhikkhū nevāsikehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ paṭisammoda-mānā sen’āsanāni paññā-paya-mānā patta-cīvarāni paṭisāmaya-mānā uccā-saddā mahā-saddā’ ti.|| ||
‘Gacchatha bhikkhave paṇāmemi vo, na vo mama santike vatthabban’ ti.|| ||
“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato paṭi-s-sutvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā sen’āsanaṃ saṃsāmetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya pakkamiṃsu.|| ||
Tena kho pana samayena cātumeyyakā Sakkā santhāgāre sanni-patitā honti kenacid-eva karaṇīyena, addasaṃsu1 kho cātumeyyakā Sakkā te bhikkhū dūrato va gacchante, disvāna yena te bhikkhū ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etad avocuṃ: ‘handa kahaṃ pana tumhe āyasmanto gacchathā’ ti.|| ||
Bhagavatā kho āvuso bhikkhu-saṅgho paṇāmito’ ti.|| ||
‘Tena hāyasmanto muhuttaṃ nisīdatha, app’eva nāma mayaṃ sakkuṇeyyāma Bhagavantaṃ pasādetun’ ti.|| ||
Evam āvuso ti kho te bhikkhū cātumeyyakānaṃ Sakkānaṃ paccassosuṃ.|| ||
Atha kho cātumeyyakā Sakkā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu, eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho cātumeyyakā Sakkā Bhagavantaṃ etad avocuṃ: ‘abhinandatu bhante Bhagavā bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ, abhivadatu bhante Bhagavā bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ, seyyathā pi bhante Bhagavatā pubbe bhikkhu-saṅgho anuggahito, evam eva1 Bhagavā etarahi anugaṇhātu bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ.|| ||
Santettha bhante bhikkhū navā acira-pabba-jitā adhunā-gatā imaṃ Dhamma-Vinayaṃ, tesaṃ Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya alabhantānaṃ siyā aññathattaṃ , siyā viparināmo.|| ||
Seyyathā pi bhante bījānaṃ taruṇānaṃ udakaṃ alabhantānaṃ siyā aññathattaṃ, siyā viparināmo, evam eva kho bhante santettha bhikkhū navā acira-pabba-jitā adhunā-gatā imaṃ Dhamma-Vinayaṃ, tesaṃ Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya alabhantānaṃ siyā aññathattaṃ, siyā viparināmo.|| ||
Seyyathā pi bhante bījānaṃ taruṇānaṃ udakaṃ alabhantānaṃ siyā aññathattaṃ, siyā viparināmo.|| ||
Evam eva kho bhante santettha [458] bhikkhū navā acira-pabba-jitā adhunā-gatā imaṃ Dhamma-Vinayaṃ, tesaṃ Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya alabhantānaṃ siyā aññathattaṃ, siyā viparināmo.|| ||
Seyyathā pi bhante vacchassa taruṇassa mātaraṃ apassantassa siyā aññathattaṃ, siyā viparināmo.|| ||
Evam eva kho bhante santettha bhikkhū navā acira-pabba-jitā adhunā-gatā imaṃ Dhamma-Vinayaṃ, tesaṃ Bhagavantaṃ apassantānaṃ siyā aññathattaṃ, siyā viparināmo.|| ||
Abhinandatu bhante Bhagavā bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ, abhivadatu bhante Bhagavā bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ.|| ||
Seyyathā pi bhante Bhagavatā pubbe bhikkhu-saṅgho [459] anuggahito, evam eva Bhagavā etarahi anugaṇhātu bhikkhu Saṅghan’ ti.|| ||
Asakkhiṃsu kho cātumeyyakā ca Sakkā Brahmā ca Sahampati Bhagavantaṃ pasādetuṃ bījūpamena ca taruṇūpamena ca.|| ||
Atha kho āyasmā Mahā Moggallāno bhikkhū āmantesi: ‘uṭṭhahath’āvuso, gaṇhātha patta-cīvaraṃ, pasādito Bhagavā cātumeyyakehi ca Sakkehi Brahmuṇā ca Sahampatinā bījūpamena ca taruṇūpamena cā’ ti.|| ||
Evam āvuso ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Moggallānassa paṭi-s-sutvā uṭṭhāy āsanā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu, eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ Sāriputtaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca: kinti te Sāriputta ahosi mayā bhikkhu-saṅghe paṇāmite’ ti.|| ||
Evaṃ kho me bhante ahosi Bhagavatā bhikkhu-saṅghe paṇāmite1.|| ||
Appo-s-sukkodā’ni Bhagavā diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ anuyutto viharissati.|| ||
Mayam pidāni appossukkā diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ anuyuttā viharissāmā’ ti.|| ||
Āgamehi tvaṃ Sāriputta, āgamehi tvaṃ Sāriputta, diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāranti na kho te Sāriputta puna pi eva-rūpaṃ cittaṃ uppādetabbanti2.|| ||
Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Moggallānaṃ āmantesi.|| ||
‘Kinti te Moggallāna ahosi mayā bhikkhu-saṅghe paṇāmiteti.|| ||
Evaṃ kho me bhante ahosi Bhagavatā bhikkhu-saṅghe paṇāmite appossukko’dāni Bhagavā diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ anuyutto viharissati.|| ||
Ahañ cadāni āyasmā ca Sāriputto bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ pariharissāmā’ ti.|| ||
Sādhu sādhu Moggallāna, ahaṃ vā hi Moggallāna bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ parihareyyaṃ Sāriputta Moggallānā vāti.|| ||
Atha kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: cattārimāni bhikkhave bhayāni udakorohante pāṭikaṅkhitabbāni, katamāni cattāri: ūmībh ayaṃ kumbhī’abh ayaṃ āvaṭṭabh ayaṃ susukābh ayaṃ.|| ||
Imāni kho bhikkhave cattāri bhayāni udakorohante pāṭikaṅkhitabbāni.|| ||
Evam eva kho bhikkhave cattārimāni bhayāni idh’ekacce puggale imasmiṃ Dhamma-Vinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jite pāṭikaṅkhitabbāni.|| ||
Katamāni [460] cattāri: ūmībh ayaṃ kumbhīlabh ayaṃ āvaṭṭabh ayaṃ susukābh ayaṃ.|| ||
Katamañ ca bhikkhave ūmībh ayaṃ: idha bhikkhave ekacco kula-putto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti, ”Otiṇṇo’mhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto.|| ||
App’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ ti.|| ||
Tam enaṃ tathā pabba-jitaṃ samānaṃ sabrahma-cārī ovadanti anusāsanti: ‘evante abhi-k-kamitabbaṃ.|| ||
Evante paṭikkamitabbaṃ.|| ||
Evante ālokitabbaṃ.|| ||
Evante vilokitabbaṃ.|| ||
Evante sammiñjitabbaṃ.|| ||
Evante pasāretabbaṃ.|| ||
Evante saṅghāṭipatta-cīvaraṃ dhāretabban’ ti.|| ||
Tassa evaṃ hoti:|| ||
Mayaṃ kho pubbe agāriya-bhūtā samānā aññe ovadāmapi1 anusāsāmapi2 ime pan amhākaṃ puttamattā maññe, nattamattā maññe, amhe ovaditabbaṃ anusāsitabbaṃ maññantī ti.|| ||
So sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvattati.|| ||
Ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave ūmībhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvatto ūmībhayanti kho bhikkhave kodhūpāyāsassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ.|| ||
Katamañ ca bhikkhave kumbhīlabh ayaṃ: idha bhikkhave ekacco kula-putto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti, ‘Otiṇṇo’mhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto.|| ||

Anusāsanti: ‘idaṃ te khāditabbaṃ idaṃ te na khāditabbaṃ, idaṃ te bhuñjitabbaṃ, idaṃ te na bhuñjitabbaṃ, idaṃ te sāyitabbaṃ, idaṃ te na sāyitabbaṃ, idaṃ te pātabbaṃ, idaṃ te na pātabbaṃ, kappiyaṃ te khāditabbaṃ, akappiyaṃ te na khāditabbaṃ, kappiyaṃ te bhuñjitabbaṃ, akappiyaṃ te na bhuñajitabbaṃ, kappiyaṃ te sāyitabbaṃ, akappiyaṃ te na sāyitabbaṃ, kappiyaṃ te pātabbaṃ, akappiyaṃ te na pātabbaṃ, kāle te khāditabbaṃ, vikāle te na khāditabbaṃ, kāle te bhuñjitabbaṃ, vikāle te na bhuñjitabbaṃ, kāle te sāyitabbaṃ, vikāle te na sāyitabbaṃ, kāle te pātabbaṃ, vikāle te na pātabban’ ti.|| ||
Tassa [461] evaṃ hoti: mayaṃ kho pubbe agāriya-bhūtā samānā yaṃ icchāma taṃ khādāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ khādāma, yaṃ icchāma taṃ bhuñjāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ bhuñjāma, yaṃ icchāma taṃ sāyāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ sāyāma, yaṃ icchāma taṃ pivāma3 yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ pivāma.|| ||
Kappiyampi khādāma, akappiyampi khādāma, kappiyampi bhuñjāma, akappiyampi bhuñjāma, kappiyampi sāyāma, akappiyampi sāyāma, kappiyampi pivāma, akappiyampi pivāma.|| ||
Kālepi khādāma, vikālepi khādāma, kālepi bhuñjāma vikālepi bhuñjāma, kālepi sāyāma, vikālepi sāyāma, kālepi pivāma, vikālepi pivāma.|| ||
Yampi no saddhā gahapatikā divā vikāle paṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ denti, tatthapi me mukhāvaraṇaṃ maññe karontī’ ti.|| ||
So sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvattati.|| ||
Ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave kumbhīla-bhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvatto.|| ||
Kumbhīlabhayanti kho bhikkhave odarikattass’etaṃ adhivacanaṃ.|| ||
Katamañ ca bhikkhave āvaṭṭabh ayaṃ, idha bhikkhave ekacco kula-putto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti.|| ||
Otiṇṇomhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto.|| ||
App’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ ti.|| ||
So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya gāmaṃ vā nigamaṃ vā piṇḍāya pavisati arakkhiten’eva kāyena, arakkhitāya vācāya, anupaṭṭhitāya satiyā asaṃvutehi indriyehi.|| ||
So tattha passati gahapatiṃ vā gahapati-puttaṃ vā pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappitaṃ samaṅgībhūtaṃ paricāraya-mānaṃ.|| ||
Tassa evaṃ hoti: mayaṃ kho pubbe agāriya-bhūtā samānā pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappitā samaṅgībhūtā paricārimha.|| ||
Saṅvijjante1 kho kule2 bhogā, sakkā bhoge ca bhuñjituṃ puññāni ca kātun’ ti.|| ||
So sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvattati.|| ||
Ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave āvaṭṭa-bhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvatto.|| ||
Āvaṭṭabhayanti kho bhikkhave pañcann’etaṃ kāma-guṇānaṃ adhivacanaṃ.|| ||
Katamañ ca bhikkhave susukābh ayaṃ, idha bhikkhave [462] ekacco kula-putto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti, ‘Otiṇṇo’mhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto, app’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ ti.|| ||
So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya gāmaṃ vā nigamaṃ vā piṇḍāya pavisati arakkhiten’eva kāyena, arakkhitāya vācāya, anupaṭṭhitāya satiyā, asaṃvutehi indriyehi.|| ||
So tattha passati mātu-gāmaṃ dunnivatthaṃ vā duppārutaṃ vā.|| ||
Tassa mātu-gāmaṃ disvā dunnivatthaṃ vā duppārutaṃ vā rāgo cittaṃ anuddhaṃseti, so rāgānuddhastena cittena sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvattati.|| ||
Ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave susukā-bhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ pacca-k-khāya hīnāy-āvatto.|| ||
Susukābhayanti kho bhikkhave mātu-gāmassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ.|| ||
Imāni kho bhikkhave cattāri bhayāni idh’ekacce puggale imasmiṃ Dhamma-Vinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jite pāṭikaṅkhitabbānīti.|| ||
Idam avoca Bhagavā atta-manā te bhikkhū Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.|| ||
