Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Kurūsu viharati Kammāssa-dammaṃ nāma Kurūnaṃ nigamo Bhāradvāja-gottassa brāhmaṇassa agyāgāre tiṇa-santharake.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya Kammāssa-dammaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.|| ||

Kammāssadamme piṇḍāya caritvā pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto yena aññataro vana-saṇḍo ten’upasaṅkami divā-vihārāya.|| ||

Taṃ vana-saṇḍaṃ ajjhogāhetvā aññatarasmiṃ rukkha-mūle divā-vihāraṃ nisīdi.|| ||

[502] Atha kho Māgandiyo paribbājako jaṅghā-vihāraṃ anucaṅkamamāno anuvicaramāno yena Bhāradvāja-gottassa brāhmaṇassa agy-ā-gāraṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Addasā kho Māgandiyo paribbājako Bhāradvāja-gottassa brāhmaṇassa agyāgāre tiṇa-santharakaṃ paññattaṃ,||
disvāna Bhāradvāja-gottaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Kassa nv’ayaṃ bhoto Bhāradvājassa agyāgāre tiṇa-santharako paññatto.|| ||

Samaṇa-seyyā-rūpaṃ maññe’ ti.|| ||

Atthi bho Māgaṇḍiya Samaṇo Gotamo Sakya-putto Sakya-kulā pabba-jito.|| ||

Taṃ kho pana bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kitti-saddo abbhu-g-gato:|| ||

‘Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathī Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā’ ti.|| ||

Tass’esā bhoto Gotamassa seyyā paññattā’ ti.|| ||

Du-d-diṭṭhaṃ vata bho Bhāradvāja addasāma ye mayaṃ tassa bhoto Gotamassa bhūnahuno seyyaṃ addasāmā’ ti.|| ||

‘Rakkhass’etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya vācaṃ,||
rakkhass’etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya vācaṃ,||
bahū hi tassa bhoto Gotamassa khattiya-paṇḍitā pi brāhmaṇa-paṇḍitā pi gahapati-paṇḍitā pi samaṇa-paṇḍitā pi abhi-p-pasannā vinītā ariye ñāye dhamme kusale’ ti.

Sammukhā ce pi mayaṃ bho Bhāradvāja tam bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ passeyyāma sammukhā pi naṃ vadeyyāma: bhūnahu samaṇo Gotamo ti.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ hi no sutte ocaratī’ ti.|| ||

‘Sace taṃ bhoto Māgaṇḍiyassa agaru āroceyyam-etaṃ samaṇassa Gotamassā’ ti.|| ||

‘Appo-s-sukko bhavaṃ Bhāradvājo vutto va naṃ vadeyyā’ ti.|| ||

Assosi kho Bhagavā dibbāya sota-dhātuyā visuddhāya atikkanta mānusikāya Bhāradvāja-gottassa brāhmaṇassa Māgandiyena paribbājakena saddhiṃ imaṃ kathā-sallāpaṃ.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā sāyaṇha-samayaṃ patisallāṇā vuṭṭhito yena Bhāradvāja-gottassa brāhmaṇassa agy-ā-gāraṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā nisīdi paññatte va tiṇa-santharake.|| ||

Atha kho Bhāradvāja-gotto brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho Bhāradvāja-gottaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca:

‘Ahu pana te Bhāradvāja Māgandiyena paribbājakena [503] saddhiṃ imaṃ yeva tiṇa-santharakaṃ ārabbha kocid-eva kathā-sallāpo’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Bhāradvāja-gotto brāhmaṇo saṃviggo loma-haṭṭha-jāto Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Etad eva kho pana mayaṃ bhoto Gotamassa ārocetukāmā,||
atha ca pana bhavaṃ Gotamo anakkhātaṃ yeva akhāsīti.|| ||

Ayañ ca h’idaṃ Bhagavato Bhāradvāja-gottena brāhmaṇena saddhiṃ antarā kathā vippakatā hoti.|| ||

Atha Māgandiyo paribbājako jaṅghā-vihāraṃ anucaṅkamamāno anuvicaramāno yena Bhāradvāja-gottassa brāhmaṇassa agy-ā-gāraṃ,||
yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho Māgaṇḍiyaṃ paribbājakaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca.

Cakkhuṃ kho Māgaṇḍiya rūp-ā-rāmaṃ rūpa-rataṃ rūpa-sammuditaṃ.|| ||

Taṃ Tathāgatassa dantaṃ guttaṃ rakkhitaṃ saṃvutaṃ.|| ||

Tassa ca saṃvarāya dhammaṃ deseti.|| ||

Idaṃ nu te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti?|| ||

‘Etad eva kho pana me bho Gotama sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Sotaṃ kho Māgaṇḍiya sadd-ā-rāmaṃ sadda-rataṃ sadda-sammuditaṃ.|| ||

Tassa ca saṃvarāya dhammaṃ deseti.|| ||

Idaṃ nu te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

Etad eva kho pana me bho Gotama sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

Ghānaṃ kho Māgaṇḍiya gandh-ā-rāmaṃ gandha-rataṃ gandha-sammuditaṃ.|| ||

Taṃ Tathāgatassa dantaṃ guttaṃ rakkhitaṃ saṃvutaṃ.|| ||

Tassa ca saṃvarāya dhammaṃ deseti.|| ||

Idaṃ nu te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Etad eva kho pana me bho Gotama sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ hi no sutte ocaratī ti.|| ||

Jivhā kho Māgaṇḍiya ras-ā-rāmā rasā-rattā rasa-sammuditā.|| ||

Sā Tathāgatassa dantā guttā rakkhitā saṃvutā.|| ||

Tassā ca saṃvarāya dhammaṃ deseti.|| ||

Idaṃ nu te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:||
‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Etad eva kho pana me bho Gotama sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ hi no sutte ocaratī’ ti.|| ||

Kāyo kho Māgaṇḍiya phoṭṭhabb’ārāmo phoṭṭhabba-rato phoṭṭhabba-sammudito.|| ||

So Tathāgatassa danto gutto rakkhito saṃvuto.|| ||

Tassa ca saṃvarāya dhammaṃ deseti.|| ||

Idaṃ nu te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:||
‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Etad eva kho pana me bho Gotama sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ hi no sutte ocaratī’ ti.|| ||

Mano kho Māgaṇḍiya dhamm-ā-rāmo dhamma-rato dhamma-sammudito.|| ||

So Tathāgatassa danto gutto rakkhito saṃvuto.|| ||

Tassa ca saṃvarāya dhammaṃ deseti.|| ||

Idaṃ nu te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Etad eva kho pana me bho Gotama sandhāya bhāsitaṃ:|| ||

‘Bhūnahu Samaṇo Gotamo’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ hi no sutte ocaratī’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya idh’ekacco cakkhu- [504] viññeyyehi rūpehi paricārita-pubbo assa,||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So aparena samayena rūpānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā rūpa-taṇhaṃ pahāya rūpa-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihareyya.|| ||

Imassa pana te Māgaṇḍiya kimassa vacanīyanti:||
na kiñci bho Gotama.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Idh’ekacco sota-viññeyyehi saddehi paricārita-pubbo assa,||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So aparena samayena saddānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā sadda-taṇhaṃ pahāya sadda-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihareyya.|| ||

Imassa pana te Māgaṇḍiya kimassa vacanīyanti:||
na kiñci bho Gotama.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Idh’ekacco ghāna-viññeyyehi gandhehi paricārita-pubbo assa,||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So aparena samayena gandhānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā gandha-taṇhaṃ pahāya gandha-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihareyya.|| ||

Imassa pana te Māgaṇḍiya kimassa vacanīyanti:||
na kiñci bho Gotama.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Idh’ekacco jivhā-viññeyyehi rasehi paricārita-pubbo assa,||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So aparena samayena rasānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā rasa-taṇhaṃ pahāya rasa-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihareyya.|| ||

Imassa pana te Māgaṇḍiya kimassa vacanīyanti:|| ||

Na kiñci bho Gotama.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Idh’ekacco kāya-viññeyyehi phoṭṭhabbehi paricārita-pubbo assa,||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So aparena samayena poṭṭhabbānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā phoṭṭhabba-taṇhaṃ pahāya phoṭṭhabba-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihareyya.|| ||

Imassa pana te Māgaṇḍiya kimassa vacanīyanti:||
na kiñci bho Gotama.|| ||

Ahaṃ kho pana Māgaṇḍiya pubbe agāriya-bhūto samāno pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāresiṃ.|| ||

Cakkhu-viññeyyehi rūpehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Sota-viññeyyehi saddehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Ghāna-viññeyyehi gandhehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Jivhā-viññeyyehi rasehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Kāya-viññeyyehi phoṭṭhabbehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Māgaṇḍiya tayo pāsādā ahesuṃ: eko vassiko eko hemantiko eko gimhiko.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Māgaṇḍiya vassike pāsāde vassike cattāro māse nippurisehi turiyehi paricāraya-māno na heṭṭhā pāsādaṃ orohāmi.|| ||

So aparena samayena kāmānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṃ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā kāma-taṇhaṃ pahāya kāma-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto viharāmi.|| ||

So aññe satte passāmi kāmesu avīta-rāge kāma-taṇhāhi khajja-māne kāma-pariḷāhena pariḍayha-māne kāme paṭisevante.|| ||

So tesaṃ na pihemi.|| ||

Na tattha abhiramāmi.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Yā hayaṃ Māgaṇḍiya ratī aññatr’eva kāmehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi api dibbaṃ [505] sukhaṃ samadhigayha tiṭṭhati,||
tāya ratiyā rama-māno hīnassa na pihemi.|| ||

Na tattha abhiramāmi.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā aḍḍho maha-d-dhano mahā-bhogo pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samppito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāreyya.|| ||

Cakkhu-viññeyyehi rūpehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Sota-viñañeyyehi saddehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi ghāna-viññeyyehi gandhehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Jivhā-viññeyyehi rasehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Kāya-viññeyyehi phoṭṭhabbehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So kāyena su-caritaṃ caritvā vācāya su-caritaṃ caritvā manasā su-caritaṃ caritvā kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapa-j-jeyya devānaṃ Tāvatiṃsānaṃ saha-vyataṃ.|| ||

So tattha nandane vane accharā-Saṅgha-parivuto dibbehi pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgīto paricāreyya.|| ||

So passeyya gahapatiṃ vā gahapati-puttaṃ vā pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappitaṃ samaṅgī-bhūtaṃ paricāraya-mānaṃ.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya,||
api nu so deva-putto nandane vane accharā-Saṅgha-parivuto dibbehi pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāraya-māno amussa gahapatissa vā gahapati-puttassa vā piheyya mānusakānaṃ vā pañcannaṃ kāma-guṇānaṃ,||
mānusakehi vā kāmehi āvaṭṭeyyāti.|| ||

No h’idaṃ bho Gotama,||
taṃ kissa hetu:||
mānusakehi bho Gotama kāmehi dibbā kāmā abhikkantatarā paṇītatarā cā ti.|| ||

Evam eva kho ahaṃ Māgaṇḍiya pubbe agāriya-bhūto samāno pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāresiṃ:||
cakkhu-viññeyyehi rūpehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Sota-viñañeyyehi saddehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Ghāna-viññeyyehi gandhehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Jivhā-viññeyyehi rasehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Kāya-viññeyyehi phoṭṭhabbehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

So aparena samayena kāmānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā kāma-taṇhaṃ pahāya kāma-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto viharāmi.|| ||

So aññe satte passāmi kāmesu avīta-rāge kāma-taṇhāhi khajja-māne kāma-pariḷāhena [506] pariḍayha-māne kāme paṭisevante.|| ||

So tesaṃ na pihemi,||
na tattha abhiramāmi.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Yā ha’yaṃ Māgaṇḍiya rati aññatr’eva kāmehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi api dibbaṃ sukhaṃ samadigayha tiṭṭhati,||
tāya ratiyā rama-māno hīnassa na pihemi.|| ||

Na tattha abhiramāmi.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya kuṭṭhī puriso arugatto pakka-gatto kimīhi khajja-māno nakhehi vaṇa-mukhāni vippatacchamāno aṅg’ārakāsuyā kāyaṃ paritāpeyya,||
tassa mitt-ā-maccā ñāti-sāḷo-hitā bhisakkaṃ salla-kattaṃ upaṭṭh-ā-peyyuṃ,||
tassa so bhsakko salla-katto bhesajjaṃ kareyya,||
so taṃ bhesajjaṃ āgamma kuṭṭhehi parimucceyya arogo assa sukhī serī sayaṃvasī yena kām’aṅgamo.|| ||

So aññaṃ kuṭṭhiṃ purisaṃ passeyya aru-gattaṃ pakka-gattaṃ kimīhi khajja-mānaṃ nakhehi vaṇa-mukhāni vippatacchamānaṃ aṅg’ārakāsuyā kāyaṃ paritāpentaṃ.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya,||
‘api nu so puriso amussa kuṭṭhi’ssa purisassa piheyya,||
aṅg’ārakāsuyā vā bhesajja-paṭisevanāya vā’ ti.|| ||

No h’idaṃ bho Gotama.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Roge hi bho Gotama sati bhesajjena karaṇīyaṃ hoti,||
roge asati bhesajjena karaṇīyaṃ na hotī’ ti.|| ||

Evam eva kho ahaṃ Māgaṇḍiya pubbe agāriya-bhūto samāno pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāresiṃ.|| ||

Cakkhu-viññeyyehi rūpehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Sota-viñañeyyehi saddehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Ghāna-viññeyyehi gandhehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Jivhā-viññeyyehi rasehi iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

Viditvā kāma-taṇhaṃ pahāya kāma-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto viharāmi.|| ||

So aññe satte passāmi kāmesu avīta-rāge kāma-taṇhāhi khajja-māne kāma-pariḷāhena pariḍayha-māne kāme paṭisevante.|| ||

So tesaṃ na pihemi,||
na tattha abhiramāmi.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Yā ha’yaṃ Māgaṇḍiya rati aññatr’eva kāmehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi api dibbaṃ sukhaṃ samadigayha tiṭṭhati,||
tāya ratiyā rama-māno hīnassa na pihemi.|| ||

Na tattha abhiramāmi.

[507] Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya kuṭṭhī puriso arugatto pakka-gatto kimīhi khajja-māno nakhehi vaṇa-mukhāni vippatacchamāno aṅg’ārakāsuyā kāyaṃ paritāpeyya.|| ||

Tassa mitt-ā-maccā ñāti-sāḷo-hitā bhisakkaṃ salla-kattaṃ upaṭṭh-ā-peyyuṃ.|| ||

Tassa so bhsakko salla-katto bhesajjaṃ kareyya.|| ||

So taṃ bhesjaṃ āgamma kuṭṭhehi parimucceyya.|| ||

Arogo assa sukhī serī sayaṃvasī yena kām’aṅgamo.|| ||

Tam enaṃ dve balavanto purisā nānā bāhāsu gahetvā aṅg’ārakāsuṃ upakaḍḍheyyuṃ.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya,||
api nu so puriso iti cīti c’eva kāyaṃ sannāmeyyā’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ bho Gotama.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

‘Asu hi bho Gotama aggi dukkha-samphasso c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpo ca mahā-pariḷāhocā’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Idān’eva nu kho so aggi dukkha-samphasso c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpo ca mahā-pariḷāho ca,||
udāhu pubbe pi so aggi dukkha-samphasso c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpo ca mahā-pariḷāho cā ti.|| ||

Idāni c’eva bho Gotama so aggi dukkha-samphasso c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpo ca mahā-pariḷāho ca.|| ||

Pubbe pi so aggi dukkha-samphasso c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpo ca mahā-pariḷāho ca,||
asuhi ca bho Gotama kuṭṭhī puriso arugatto pakka-gatto kimīhi khajja-māno nakhehi vaṇa-mukhāni vippatacchamāno upahat-indriyo dukkha-samphasseyeva aggismiṃ sukham iti viparīta-saññaṃ pacca-latthāti.|| ||

Evam eva kho Māgaṇḍiya atītam pi addhānaṃ kāmā dukkha-samphassā c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpā ca mahā-pariḷāhā ca.|| ||

Anāgatam pi addhānaṃ kāmā dukkha-samphassā c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpā ca mahā-pariḷāhā ca,||
etarahi pi pacc’uppannaṃ addhānaṃ kāmā dukkha-samphassā c’eva mah-ā-bhitāpā ca mahā-pariḷāhā ca.|| ||

Ime ca Māgaṇḍiya sattā kāmesu avīta-rāgā kāma-taṇhāhi khajja-mānā kāma-pariḷāhena pariḍayha-mānā upahat-indriyā dukkha-samphassesveva kāmesu sukham iti viparīta-saññaṃ pacca-latthuṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya kuṭṭhī puriso arugatto pakka-gatto kimīhi khajja-māno nakhehi vaṇa-mukhāni vippatacchamāno aṅg’ārakāsuyā kāyaṃ paritāpeti.|| ||

Yathā yathā kho Māgaṇḍiya asu kuṭṭhī puriso arugatto pakka-gatto kimīhi khajja-māno nakhehi vaṇa-mukhāni vippatacchamāno aṅg’ārakāsuyā kāyaṃ paritāpeti,||
tathā tathāssa tāni vaṇa-mukhāni [508] asucitarāni c’eva honti du-g-gandhatarāni ca pūtikatarāni ca.|| ||

Hoti c’eva kāci sātamattā assādamattā yad idaṃ vaṇa-mukhānaṃ kaṇḍūvana-hetu.|| ||

Evam eva kho Māgaṇḍiya sattā kāmesu avīta-rāgā kāma-taṇhāhi khajja-mānā kāma-pariḷāhena pariḍayha-mānā kāme paṭisevanti.|| ||

Yathā yathā kho Māgaṇḍiya sattā kāmesu avīta-rāgā kāma-taṇhāhi khajja-mānā kāma-pariḷāhena pariḍayha-mānā kāme paṭisevanti,||
tathā tathā tesaṃ sattāṇaṃ kāma-taṇhā c’eva pavaḍḍhati,||
kāma-pariḷāhena ca pariḍayhanti.|| ||

Hoti c’eva kāci sātamattā assādamattā yad idaṃ pañca kāma-guṇe paṭicca.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Api nu te diṭṭho vā suto vā rājā vā rāja-mahā-matto vā pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāraya-māno kāma-taṇhaṃ a-p-pahāya kāma-pariḷāhaṃ appaṭi-vinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihāsi vā,||
viharati vā,||
viharissati vāti.|| ||

No h’idaṃ bho Gotama.|| ||

Sādhu Māgaṇḍiya, mayā pi kho etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya n’eva diṭṭhaṃ na sutaṃ rājā vā rāja-mahā-matto vā pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgī-bhūto paricāraya-māno kāma-taṇhaṃ a-p-pahāya kāma-pariḷāhaṃ appaṭi-vinodetvā vigata-pipāso ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto vihāsi vā,||
viharati vā,||
viharissati vā.|| ||

Atha kho Māgaṇḍiya ye hi keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā vigata-pipāsā ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-cittā vihaṃsu1 vā,||
viharanti vā,||
viharissati vā.|| ||

Sabbe te kāmānaṃ yeva samudayañ ca atthaṅ-gamañ ca assādañ ca ādīnavañ ca nissaraṇañ ca yathā-bhūtaṃ viditvā kāma-taṇhaṃ pahāya kāma-pariḷāhaṃ paṭivinodetvā vigata-pipāsā ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-cittā vihaṃsu1 vā,||
viharanti vā,||
viharissanti vāti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi:|| ||

‘Ārogya-paramā lābhā||
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhaṃ,||
Aṭṭhaṅgiko ca maggānaṃ||
khemaṃ amata-gāminanti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Māgandiyo paribbājako Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Acchariyaṃ bho Gotama,||
abbhutaṃ bho Gotama,||
yāva su-bhāsitañ ci’daṃ bhotā Gotamena:|| ||

[509] ‘Ārogya-paramā lābhā||
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhan’ ti.|| ||

Mayā pi kho etaṃ bho Gotama sutaṃ pubba-kānaṃ paribbājakānaṃ ācariya-pācariyānaṃ bhāsa-mānānaṃ:|| ||

‘Ārogya-paramā lābhā||
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhan’ ti.|| ||

Ta-y-idaṃ bho Gotama sametī ti.|| ||

Yampana te etaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sutaṃ pubba-kānaṃ paribbājakānaṃ ācariya-pācariyānaṃ bhāsa-mānānaṃ:|| ||

‘Ārogya-paramā lābhā||
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhan’ ti.|| ||

‘Kataman-taṃ ārogyaṃ,||
kataman-taṃ Nibbānan’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Māgandiyo paribbājako sakān’eva sudaṃ gattāni pāṇinā anomajjati.|| ||

Idantaṃ bho Gotama ārogyaṃ,||
idantaṃ Nibbānaṃ.|| ||

Ahaṃ hi bho Gotama etarahi arogo sukhī,||
na maṃ kiñci ābādhayatī’ ti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya jaccandho puriso,||
so na passeyya kaṇha-sukkāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya nīlakāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya pītakāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya lohita-kāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya mañjeṭṭha-kāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya sama-visamaṃ,||
na passeyya tāraka-rūpāni,||
na passeyya candima-suriye,||
so suṇeyya cakkhu-mato bhāsa-mānassa:||
‘chekaṃ vata bho odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucinti.|| ||

So odāta-pariyesanaṃ careyya.|| ||

Tam enaṃ aññataro puriso tela-masi-katena sāhuḷacīvarena vañceyya:|| ||

Idan te amho purisa odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucinti.|| ||

So taṃ paṭigaṇheyya,||
paṭiggahetvā pārupeyya,||
pārupitvā atta-mano atta-mana-vācaṃ nicchāreyya:|| ||

‘Chekaṃ vata bho odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucin’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi Māgaṇḍiya?|| ||

Api nu so jaccandho puriso jānanto passanto amuṃ tela-masi-kataṃ sāhuḷa-cīvaraṃ paṭigaṇheyya,||
paṭiggahetvā pārupeyya,||
pārupitvā atta-mano atta-mana-vācaṃ nicchāreyya:||
‘chekaṃ vata bho odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ suci’nti,||
udāhu cakkhu-mato saddāyāti.|| ||

Ajānanto hi bho Gotama apassanto so jaccandho puriso amuṃ tela-masi-kataṃ sāhuḷa-cīvaraṃ paṭigaṇheyya,||
paṭiggahetvā pārupeyya,||
pārupitvā atta-mano atta-mana-vācaṃ nicchāreyya:|| ||

[510] Chekaṃ vata bho odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucinti,||
cakkhu-mate saddhāyāti.|| ||

Evam eva kho Māgaṇḍiya añña-titthiyā paribbājakā andhā ackkhukā,||
ajānantā ārogyaṃ,||
apassantā Nibbānaṃ.|| ||

Atha ca pani’maṃ gāthaṃ bhāsanti.|| ||

‘Ārogya paramā lābhā Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhan’ ti.|| ||

Pubba-kehesā Māgaṇḍiya Arahantehi Sammā Sambuddhehī gāthā bhāsitā.|| ||

‘Ārogya-paramā lābhā Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhaṃ,||
Aṭṭhaṅgiko ca maggānaṃ khemaṃ amata-gāminan’ ti.|| ||

Sā etarahi anupubbena puthu-j-jana-gatā.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho pana Māgaṇḍiya kāyo roga-bhūto gaṇḍa-bhūto salla-bhūto agha-bhūto ābādha-bhūto.|| ||

So tvaṃ imaṃ kāyaṃ roga-bhūtaṃ gaṇḍa-bhūtaṃ salla-bhūtaṃ agha-bhūtaṃ ābādha-bhūtaṃ||
‘idaṃ taṃ bho Gotama ārogyaṃ idaṃ taṃ Nibbāna’nti vadesi.|| ||

Taṃ hi te Māgaṇḍiya ariyaṃ cakkhuṃ n’atthi yena tvaṃ ariyena cakkhunā ārogyaṃ jāneyyāsi,||
Nibbānaṃ passeyyāsīti.|| ||

Evaṃ pasanno ahaṃ bhoto Gotamassa,||
pahoti me bhavaṃ Gotamo tathā dhammaṃ desetuṃ,||
yathā’haṃ ārogyaṃ jāneyyaṃ,||
Nibbānaṃ passeyyan’ ti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya jaccandho puriso,||
so na passeyya kaṇha-sukkāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya nīlakāni rūpāni,||

Evaṃ bho Gotama.|| ||

Evam eva kho Māgaṇḍiya ahañ c’eva te Dhammaṃ deseyyaṃ idantaṃ ārogyaṃ,||
idantaṃ Nibbānanti.|| ||

So tvaṃ ārogyaṃ na jāneyyāsi,||
Nibbānaṃ na passeyyāsi.|| ||

So mam’assa kilamatho,||
sā mam’assa vihesā’ ti.|| ||

[511] Evaṃ pasanno ahaṃ bhoto Gotamassa,||
pahoti me bhavaṃ Gotamo tathā dhammaṃ desetuṃ,||
yathā’haṃ ārogya jāneyyaṃ Nibbānaṃ passeyyanti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Māgaṇḍiya jaccandho puriso so na passeyya kaṇha-sukkāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya nīlakāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya pītakāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya lohita-kāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya mañjeṭṭha-kāni rūpāni,||
na passeyya sama-visamaṃ,||
na passeyya tāraka-rūpāni,||
na passeyya candima-suriye.|| ||

So suṇeyya cakkhu-mato bhāsa-mānassa ‘chekaṃ vata bho odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucin’ ti.|| ||

So odāta-pariyesanaṃ careyya.|| ||

Tamenaññataro puriso tela-masi-katena sāhuḷacīvarena vañceyya,||
idan te ambho purisa odātaṃ vatthaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucinti.|| ||

So taṃ paṭigaṇheyya,||
paṭiggahetvā pārupeyya.|| ||

Tassa mitt-ā-maccā ñāti-sāḷo-hitā bhisakkaṃ salla-kattaṃ upaṭṭh-ā-peyyuṃ.|| ||

Tassa so bhsakko salla-katto bhesajjaṃ kareyya: uddha-virecanaṃ adho-virecanaṃ añjanaṃ paccañjanaṃ natthu-kammaṃ.|| ||

So taṃ bhesajjaṃ āgamma cakkhūni uppādeyya,||
cakkhūni visodheyya.|| ||

Tassa saha cakkhu-p-pādā yo amusmiṃ tela-masi-kate sāhuḷacīvare chanda-rāgo,||
so pahīyetha.|| ||

Tañ ca naṃ purisaṃ amittato pi daheyya.|| ||

Paccatthikato pi daheyya.|| ||

Api ca jīvitā voropetabbaṃ maññeyya,||
‘dīgha-rattaṃ vata bho ahaṃ iminā purisena tela-masi-katena sāhuḷacīvarena nikato vañcito paluddho.|| ||

‘Idan te ambho purisa odātaṃ vatthaṃ chekaṃ abhirūpaṃ nimmalaṃ sucinti.|| ||

Evam eva kho Māgaṇḍiya ahañ c’eva te Dhammaṃ deseyyaṃ:||
‘idantaṃ ārogyaṃ,||
idantaṃ Nibbānan’ ti.|| ||

So tvaṃ ārogyaṃ jāneyyāsi,||
Nibbānaṃ passeyyāsi.|| ||

Tassa te saha cakkhu-p-pādā yo pañca-s-upādāna-k-khandhesu chanda-rāgo,||
so pahīyetha,||
api ca te evam assa dīgha-rattaṃ vata bho ahaṃ iminā cittena nikato vañcito paluddho,||
ahaṃ hi rūpaṃ yeva upādiyamāno upādiyiṃ,||
vedanaṃ yeva upādiyamāno upādiyiṃ,||
saññaṃ yeva upādiyamāno upādiyiṃ,||
saṅkhāre yeva upādiyamāno upādiyiṃ,||
viññāṇaṃ yeva upādiyamāno upādiyiṃ.|| ||

Tassa me upādāna-paccayā bhavo,||
bhava paccayā jāti,||
jāti-paccayā jarā-maraṇaṃ soka-parideva-dukkha-domanass- [512] upāyāsā sambhavanti.|| ||

Evam etassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa samudayo hotī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ pasanno ahaṃ bhoto Gotamassa:||
pahoti me bhavaṃ Gotamo tathā dhammaṃ desetuṃ,||
yathā’haṃ imamhā āsanā anandho vuṭṭhaheyyan’ ti.|| ||

Tena hi tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sappurise bhajeyyāsi,||
yato kho tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sappurise bhajissasi,||
tato tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya Sad’Dhammaṃ sossasi.|| ||

Yato kho tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya Sad’Dhammaṃ sossasi,||
tato tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya Dhamm-ā-nu-Dhammaṃ paṭipajjissasi.|| ||

Yato kho tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya Dhamm-ā-nu-Dhammaṃ paṭipajjissasi,||
tato tvaṃ Māgaṇḍiya sāmaṃ yeva ñassasi,||
sāmaṃ dakkhisi.|| ||

Ime rogā gaṇḍā sallā,||
idha rogā gaṇḍā sallā aparisesā nirujjhanti,||
tassa me upādāna-nirodhā bhava-nirodho,||
bhava-nirodhā jāti-nirodho,||
jāti-nirodhā jarā-maraṇaṃ soka-parideva-dukkha-domanass’upāyāsā nirujjhanti,||
evam etassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa nirodho hotī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Māgandiyo paribbājako Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

Abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama,||
seyyathā pi bho Gotama nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya,||
paṭi-c-channaṃ vā vivareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Maggaṃ ācikkheyya’||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya,||
‘cakkhu-manto rūpāni dakkhintī’ ti,||
evam evaṃ bhotā Gotamena aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.|| ||

Es’āhaṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi Dhammañ ca bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca.|| ||

Labheyyāhaṃ bhoto Gotamassa santike pabbajjaṃ,||
labheyyaṃ upasampadan’ ti.|| ||

Yo kho Māgaṇḍiya añña-titthiyapubbo imasmiṃ Dhamma-Vinaye ākaṅkhati pabbajjaṃ,||
ākaṅkhati upasampadaṃ,||
so cattāro māse parivasati,||
catunnaṃ māsānaṃ accayena āraddha-cittā bhikkhū pabbā-jenti,||
upasampādenti bhikkhu-bhāvāya.|| ||

Api ca mettha puggalace-mattatā viditāti.|| ||

Sapaca bhante añña-titthiya-pubbā imasmiṃ Dhamma-Vinaye ākaṅkhantā pabbajjaṃ ākaṅkhantā upasampadaṃ,||
cattāro māse parivasanti,||
catunnaṃ māsānaṃ accayena āraddha-cittā bhikkhū pabbā-jenti.|| ||

Upasampādenti bhikkhu-bhāvāya.|| ||

Ahaṃ cattāri vassāni parivasissāmi.|| ||

Catunnaṃ maṃ vassānaṃ accayena āraddha-cittā bhikkhū pabbājentu,||
upasampādentu bhikkhu [513] bhāvāyāti.|| ||

Alattha kho Māgandiyo paribbājako Bhagavato santike pabbajjaṃ,||
alattha upasampadaṃ.|| ||

Acir’ūpasampanno kho pan’āyasmā Māgandiyo eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto na cirass’eva yass’atthāya kula-puttā samma-d-eva agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajanti,||
tad anuttaraṃ Brahma-cariya pariyosānaṃ diṭṭhe’va dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā upasampajja vihāsi.|| ||

Khīṇā jāti,||
vusitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ,||
kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ,||
nāparaṃ itthattāyā ti abbhaññāsi.|| ||

Aññataro ca kho pan’āyasmā Māgandiyo arahataṃ ahosī ti.|| ||
