Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā videhesu cārikaṃ carati mahatā bhikkhu-saṅghena saddhiṃ pañca-mattehi bhikkhū-satehi.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena brāhmāyu nāma brāhmaṇo mithilāyaṃ paṭivasati jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto vīsaṃvassasatiko jātiyā,||
tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkhara-p-pabhe-dānaṃ itihāsa-pañca-mānaṃ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu anavayo.|| ||

Assosi kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo:

“Samaṇo khalu bho Gotamo Sakya-putto Sakya-kulā pabba-jito videhesu cārikaṃ carati mahatā bhikkhu-saṅghena saddhiṃ pañca-mattehi bhikkhu-satehi.|| ||

Taṃ kho pana Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kitti-saddo.|| ||

Abbhūggato ‘Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathi Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā.|| ||

So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti ādi kalyāṇaṃ majjhe kalyāṇaṃ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ savyañ janaṃ kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Sādhu kho pana tathā-rūpānaṃ arahataṃ dassanaṃ hoti’ ti.

[134]Tena kho pana samayena Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa uttaro nāma māṇavo antevāsī hoti tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkhara-p-pabhe-dānaṃ itihāsa-pañca-mānaṃ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu anavayo.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uttaraṃ māṇavaṃ āmantesi: ‘ayaṃ tāta uttara,||
Samaṇo Gotamo Sakya-putto Sakya-kulā pabba-jito videhesu cārikaṃ carati mahatā bhikkhū-saṅghena saddhiṃ pañca-mattehi bhikkhu-satehi.|| ||

Taṃ kho pana Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kitti-saddo abbhūggato’Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathi Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā.So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā ññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

Ehi tvaṃ tāta uttara,||
yena Samaṇo Gotamo ten’upasaṅkama.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ jānāhi yadi vā taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ tathā santaṃ yeva saddo abbhu-g-gato.|| ||

Yadi vā no tathā,||
yadi vā so bhavaṃ Gotamo tādiso,||
yadi vā na tādiso,||
tayā mayaṃ taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ vedissāmā’ ti.|| ||

Yathā kathampanāhaṃ bho taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ jānissāmi: yadi vā taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ tathā santaṃ yeva saddo abbhu-g-gato,||
yadi vā no tathā,||
yadi vā so bhavaṃ Gotamo tādiso yadi vā natādiso’ ti.|| ||

Āgatāni kho tāta uttara,||
amhākaṃ mantesu dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni,||
yehi samannāgatassa mahā-purisassa dveyeva gatiyo bhavanti anaññā,||
sace agāraṃ ajjhā-vasati,||
rājā hoti cakka-vattī dhammiko Dhamma-rājā cāturanto vijitāvī jana-padatthāvariya-p-patto satta-ratana-samannāgato.|| ||

Tass’imāni sattaratanāni bhavanti,||
seyyath’īdaṃ: cakka-ratanaṃ hatthi-ratanaṃ assa-ratanaṃ maṇi-ratanaṃ itthi-ratanaṃ gahapati-ratanaṃ parināyaka-ratanam’eva sattamaṃ.|| ||

Parosahassaṃ kho panassa puttā bhavanti sūrā vīraṅgarūpā parasena-p-pamaddanā.|| ||

So imaṃ paṭhaviṃ sāgarapariyan taṃ adaṇḍena asatthena dhammena abhivijiya ajjhā-vasati: sace kho pana agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati,||
arahaṃ hoti Sammā Sambuddho loke vivatta-c-chando.|| ||

Ahaṃ kho pana te tāta uttara,mantānaṃ dātā,||
tvaṃ me mantānaṃ paṭiggahetāti.|| ||

Evaṃ hoti kho uttaro māṇavo Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa paṭi-s-sutvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā videhesu yena Bhagavā tena [135] cārikaṃ pakkāmi.|| ||

Anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho uttaro māṇavo Bhagavato kāye dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni sammannesi.|| ||

Addasā kho uttaro māṇavo Bhagavato kāye dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve.|| ||

Dvīsu mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu kaṅkhati vicikicchati nādhi-muccati na sampasīdati: ‘ kosohite ca vatthaguyhe pahūtajivhatāya cā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavato etad ahosi:

‘Passati kho me ayaṃ uttaro māṇavo dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve.|| ||

Dvīsu mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu kaṅkhati vicikicchati nādhi-muccati na sampasidati kosohite ca c’atthaguyhe pahūtajivhatāya cā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagava tathā-rūpaṃ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṃ abhisaṅkhāsi.|| ||

Yathā addasa uttaro māṇavo Bhagavato kosohitaṃ vatthaguyhaṃ.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā jivhaṃ ninnāmetvā ubhopi kaṇṇasotāni anumasi parimasi.|| ||

Ubhopi nāsikāsotāni anumasi parimasi.|| ||

Kevalam pi lalāṭamaṇḍalaṃ jivhāya chādesi.|| ||

Atha kho uttarassa māṇavassa etad ahosi: samannāgato kho Samaṇo Gotamodvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇehi.|| ||

Yan’nūn-ā-haṃ samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ anubandheyyaṃ iriyāpathañc’assa passeyya’nti.|| ||

Atha kho uttaro māṇavo satta māsāni Bhagavantaṃ anubandhi jāyāva anapāyinī atha kho uttaro māṇavo sattannaṃ māsānaṃ accayena videhesu yena mithilā tena cārikaṃ pakkāmi.|| ||

Anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena mithilā yena Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho uttaraṃ māṇavaṃ Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo etad avoca: kacci tāta uttara,||
taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ tathā santaṃ yeva saddo [136] abbhu-g-gato no aññatā,||
kacci ca pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo tādiso,||
no aññādiso’ ti.|| ||

Tathāsantaṃ yeva bho taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ tathā saddo abbhu-g-gato,||
no aññathā,||
tādiso ca bho so bhavaṃ Gotamo,||
na aññādiso.|| ||

Samannāgato ca so bho bhavaṃ Gotamo dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇehi.|| ||

Suppati-ṭ-ṭhitapādo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo,||
idam pi tassa1 bhoto Gotamassa mahā-purisassa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇaṃ bhavati.|| ||

Heṭṭhā kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa pādatalesu cakkāni jātāni sahassārāni sanemikāni sanābhikāni sabbā-kāra-paripūrāṇi.|| ||

Āyatapaṇhī kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Dīghaṅgulī kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Mudutaeṇahatthapādo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Jālahatthapādo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Ussaṅkhapādo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Eṇijaṅgho kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Ṭhitakova kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo anonamanto ubhohi pāṇitalehi jaṇṇukāni parimasati parimajjati.|| ||

Kosohitavatthaguyho kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo.|| ||

Suvaṇṇavaṇṇo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo kañcanasantibhattaco.|| ||

Sukhumacchavi kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo sukhumattā chaviyā rajojallaṃ kāye na upalippati.|| ||

Ekekalomo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo,ekekāni lo-māni lomakūpesu jātāni.|| ||

Uddhaggalomo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo uddhaggāni lo-māni jātāni nīlāni añjanavaṇṇāni kuṇḍalāvattāni padakkhiṇāvattakajātāni.|| ||

Brahmujjugatto kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Sattussado kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Sīhapubbaddhakāyo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Citantaraṃso kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Nigrodhaparimaṇḍalo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo,||
yāvatakvassa kāyo tāvatakvassa vyāmo yāvatakvassa vyāmo tāvatakvassa kāyo||
Samavatta-k-khandho kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Rasaggasaggi kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Sīhahanu kho [137] pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Cattā’isadanto kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Samadanto kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Avivaradanto kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Susukkadāṭho kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Pahutajivho kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Brahmassaro kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo ,karavīkabhāṇī.|| ||

Abhinīlanetto kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Gopakhumo kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo||
Uṇṇā kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa bhamukantare jātā odātā mudutulasantibhā.|| ||

Uṇhīsasīso kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo idam pi tassa bhoto Gotamassa mahā-purisassa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇaṃ bhavati.|| ||

Imehi kho so bhavaṃ Gotamo dvatiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇehi samannāgato.|| ||

Gacchanto kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo dakkhiṇen’eva pādena paṭhamaṃ pakkamati,||
so nātidūre pādaṃ uddharati,||
nāccāsanne pādaṃ nikkhipati,||
so nātisīghaṃ gacchati,||
nātisanikaṃ gacchati,||
na ca adduvena addūvaṃ Saṅghaṭṭento gacchati,||
na ca gopphakena gopphakaṃ gaṅghaṭṭento gacchati,||
so gacchanto na satthiṃ unnāmeti,||
na satthiṃ onāmeti,||
na sattiṃ sannāmeti,||
na sattiṃ vināmeti.|| ||

Gacchato kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa adharakāyova1 iñjati.|| ||

Na ca kāyabalena gacchati.|| ||

Avalokento kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo sabbakāyen’eva avaloketi.|| ||

So na uddhaṃ ulloketi.|| ||

Na adho oloketi.|| ||

Na ca vipekkhamāno gacchati.|| ||

Yugamattañ ca pekkhati.|| ||

Tato c’assa uttariṃ anāvaṭaṃ ñāṇa-dassanaṃ bhavati.|| ||

So antaragharaṃ pavisanto na kāyaṃ unnāmeti.|| ||

Na kāyaṃ onāmeti.|| ||

Na kāyaṃ sannāmeti.|| ||

[138] Na kāyaṃ vināmeti.|| ||

So nātidūre nāccāsanne āsanassa parivattati.|| ||

Na ca pāṇinā ālambhitvā āsane nisīdati.|| ||

Na ca āsanasmiṃ kāyaṃ pakkhipati.|| ||

So antaraghare nisinno samāno na hatthakukkuccaṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Na pādakukkuccaṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Na ca adduvena adduvaṃ2 āropetvā nisīdati.|| ||

Na ca gopphakena gopphakaṃ āropetvā nisīdati.|| ||

Na ca pāṇinā hanukaṃ upādiyitvā3 nisīdati.|| ||

So antaraghare nisinnova samāno nacchambhati na kampati na vedhati na paritassati.|| ||

Acchamahī akam pī avedhī aparitassī vigat’alomahaṃso.|| ||

Vivekāvatto ca so bhavaṃ Gotamo antaraghare nisinno hoti.|| ||

So pattodakaṃ patigaṇhanto na pattaṃ unnāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ onāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ sannāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ vināmeti.|| ||

So pattodakaṃ patigaṇhāti nātithokaṃ nātibahuṃ.|| ||

So na bulubulukārakaṃ1 pattaṃ dhovati.|| ||

Na samparivattakaṃ pattaṃ dhovati.|| ||

Na pattaṃ bhumiyaṃ nikkhi-pitvā hatthe dhovati.|| ||

Hatthesu dhotesu patto dhoto hoti.|| ||

Patte dhote hatthā dhotā honti.|| ||

So pattodakaṃ chaḍḍheti nātidūre nāccāsanne na ca vicchaḍḍayamāno.|| ||

So odanaṃ patigaṇhanto na pattaṃ unnāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ onāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ sannāmeti na pattaṃ vināmeti.|| ||

So odanaṃ patigaṇhāti nātithokaṃ nātibahuṃ.|| ||

Byañjanaṃ kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo byañjanamattāya āhāreti,||
na ca byañjanena ālopaṃ ati-māneti3.|| ||

Dvatti-k-khattuṃ kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo mukhe ālopaṃ samparivattetvā ajjhoharati.|| ||

Na c’assa kāci odanamiñjā asambhinnaṃ kāyaṃ pavisati,||
na c’assa kāci odanamiñjā mukhe avasiṭṭhā hoti.|| ||

Athāparaṃ ālopaṃ upanāmeti.|| ||

Rasapaṭisaṃvedi kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo āhāraṃ āhāreti no ca rasarāgapaṭisaṃvedī.|| ||

Aṭṭh’aṅga-samannāgataṃ kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo āhāraṃ āhāreti.|| ||

N’eva davāya na madāya na maṇḍanāya na vibhūsanāya yāva-d-eva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiyā yāpanāya vihiṃs’ūparatiyā brahma-cariyānuggahāya iti purāṇañ ca [139] vedanaṃ paṭihaṅkhāmi.|| ||

Navañ ca vedanaṃ na uppādessāmi.|| ||

Yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca phāsu-vihāro cā’ ti.|| ||

So bhuttāvī pattodakaṃ patigaṇhanto na pattaṃ unnāmeti na pattaṃ onāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ sannāmeti.|| ||

Na pattaṃ vināmeti.|| ||

So pattodakaṃ patigaṇhāti nātithokaṃ nātibahuṃ.|| ||

So na bulubulukārakaṃ1 pattaṃ dhovati na samparivattakaṃ pattaṃ dhovati.|| ||

Na pattaṃ bhumiyaṃ nikkhi-pitvā hatthe dhovati.|| ||

Hatthesu dhotesu patto dhoto hoti.|| ||

Patte dhote hatthā dhotā honti.|| ||

So pattodakaṃ chaḍḍeti nātidūre nāccāsanne,||
na ca vicchaḍḍayamāno.|| ||

So bhuttāvī na pattaṃ4 bhumiyaṃ nikkhipati nātidure nāccāsanne.|| ||

Na ca an’atthiko pattena hoti,||
na ca ativelānurakkhī pattasmiṃ.|| ||

So bhuttāvī muhuttaṃ tuṇhī nisidati.|| ||

Na ca anumodanassa kālamatināmeti.|| ||

So bhuttāvī anumodati.|| ||

Na taṃ bhattaṃ garahati.|| ||

Na aññaṃ bhattaṃ pāṭikaṅkhati aññadatthu dhammiyāva kathāya taṃ parisaṃ sandasseti sam-ā-dapeti samuttejeti samp’ahaṃseti.|| ||

So taṃ parisaṃ dhammiyā kathāya sanda-s-setvā samāda-petvā samutte-chetvā samp’ahaṃsetvā uṭṭhāy āsanā pakkamati.|| ||

So nātisīghaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Nātisanikaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Na ca nimuccitukāmo gacchati na ca tassa bhoto Gotamassa kāye cīvaraṃ accUkkaṭṭhaṃ hoti,||
na ca accokkaṭṭhaṃ,||
na ca kāyasmiṃ allīnaṃ,||
na ca kāyasmā apakaṭṭhaṃ,||
na ca tassa bhoto Gotamassa kāyamhā vāto cīvaraṃ apavahati.|| ||

Na ca tassa bhoto Gotamassa kāye rajojallaṃ upalippati3|| ||

So ārāma-gato nisīdati paññatte āsane.|| ||

Nisajja pāde pakkhāleti.|| ||

Na ca so bhavaṃ Gotamo pādamaṇḍanānuyogamanuyutto viharati.|| ||

So pāde pakkhāletvā nisīdati pallṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭha-petvā.|| ||

So n’eva attavyābādhāya ceteti na paravyābādhāya ceteti.|| ||

Na ubhayavyābādhāya ceteti.|| ||

Attahitaṃ parahitaṃ ubhayahitaṃ sabba-lokahitam eva [140] so bhavaṃ Gotamo cintento nisinno hoti.|| ||

So ārāma-gato parisatiṃ dhammaṃ deseti na taṃ parisaṃ ussādeti.|| ||

Na taṃ parisaṃ apasādeti.|| ||

Aññadatthu dhammiyāva kathāya taṃ parisaṃ sandasseti sam-ā-dapeti samuttejeti samp’ahaṃseti.|| ||

Aṭṭh’aṅga-samannāgato kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa mukhato ghosoniccharati.|| ||

Vissaṭṭhoca viññeyyo ca mañchu ca savanīyo ca bindu ca avisārī ca gambhīro ca ninnādi ca.|| ||

Yathāparisaṃ kho pana so bhavaṃ Gotamo sarena viññāpeti.|| ||

Na c’assa bahiddhā parisāya ghoso niccharati.|| ||

Te tena bhotā Gotamena dhammiyā kathāya sanda-s-sitā samāda-pitā samutte-jitā samp’ahaṃsitā uṭṭhāy āsanā pakkamanti apalokayamānāyeva avijahantā bhāvena4.|| ||

Addasāma kho mayaṃ bho taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ gacchantaṃ.|| ||

Addasāma ṭhitaṃ.|| ||

Addasāma antaragharaṃ pavisantaṃ5 addasāma antaraghare nisinnaṃ tuṇhī-bhūtaṃ.|| ||

Addasāma bhuttāviṃ anumodantaṃ.|| ||

Addasāma ārāmaṃ gacchantaṃ6 addasāma āramagataṃ nisinnaṃ tuṇhī-bhūtaṃ.|| ||

Addasāma āramagataṃ parisatiṃ dhammaṃ desentaṃ.|| ||

Ediso ca ediso ca bho so bhavaṃ Gotamo,||
tato ca bhiyyo’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāy āsanā ekaṃsaṃ uttarā-saṅgaṃ karitvā yena Bhagavā ten’añjaliṃ panāmetvā ti-k-khattuṃ udānaṃ udānesi:||
namo tassa Bhagavato arahato Sammā Sambuddhassa,||
namo tassa Bhagavato arahato Sammā Sambuddhassa,||
namo tassa Bhagavato arahato Sammā Sambuddhassa.|| ||

App’eva nāma mayaṃ kadāci karahaci tena bhotā Gotamena saddhiṃ samāgaccheyyāma,||
app’eva nāma siyā kocid-eva kathā-sallāpo’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā videhesu anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena mithilā tad avasari.|| ||

Tatra sudaṃ Bhagavā mithilāyaṃ viharati makhādevAmbavane assosuṃ kho methileyyakā brāhmaṇa-gahapatikā samaṇo khalu bho [141] Gotamo Sakya-putto Sakya-kulā pabba-jito videhesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhū saṅghena saddhiṃ pañca-mattehi bhikkhu-satehi mithilāanuppatto mithilāyaṃ viharati makhādevAmbavane.|| ||

Taṃ kho pana Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kitti-saddo abbhu-g-gato:

‘Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathi Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā,||
so imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti ādi kalyāṇaṃ majjhe kalyāṇaṃ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ savyañ janaṃ kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Sādhu kho pana tathā-rūpānaṃ arahataṃ dassanaṃ ho’ ti.ti.|| ||

Atha kho methileyyakā1 app’ekacce Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu,||
app’ekacce Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisidiṃsu.|| ||

App’ekacce yena Bhagavā ten’añjaliṃ paṇāmetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisidiṃsu,||
app’ekacce Bhagavato santike nāmagottaṃ sāvetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

App’ekacce tuṇhī-bhūtā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Assosi kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo,’samaṇo khalu bho Gotamo Sakya-putto Sakya-kulā pabba-jito mithilaṃ anuppatto,||
mithilāyaṃ viharati makhādevAmbavane’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo sambahulehi māṇavakehi saddhiṃ yena makhādevambavanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami,||
atha kho Brahmāyuno brāhmaṇassa avidūre ambavanassa etad ahosi:

‘Na kho me taṃ paṭirūpaṃ yohaṃ pubbe appaṭisaṃvidito samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkameyyan’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo aññataraṃ māṇavakaṃ āmantesi:

‘Ehi tvaṃ māṇavaka,||
yena Samaṇo Gotamo ten’upasaṅkama,||
upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ appābādhaṃ appātaṅkaṃ lahu-ṭ-ṭhānaṃ balaṃ phāsu-vihāraṃ puccha,||
Brahmāyu bho Gotama brāhmaṇo bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ appābādhaṃ appātaṅkaṃ lahu-ṭ-ṭhānaṃ balaṃ phāsu-vihāraṃ pucchatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ ca vadehi,Brahmāyu bho Gotama,brāhmaṇo jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto vīsaṃvassasatiko jātiyā tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkhara-p-pabhe-dānaṃ itihāsa-pañca-mānaṃ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu anavayo.|| ||

Yāvatā kho brāhmaṇa-gahapatikā mithilāyaṃ paṭivasanti Brahmāyu tesaṃ brāhmaṇo aggam akkhāyati yad idaṃ bhogehi.|| ||

Bravmāyu tesaṃ brāhmaṇo aggam akkhāyati yad idaṃ mantehi.|| ||

[142] Brahmāyu tesaṃ brāhmaṇo aggam akkhāyati yad idaṃ āyunā c’eva yasasā ca.|| ||

So bhoto Gotamassa dassana-kāmo’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ bhoti kho so māṇavako Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa paṭi-s-sutvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho so māṇavako Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca: Brahmāyu bho Gotama,||
brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ appābādhaṃ appātaṅkaṃ la lahu-ṭ-ṭhānaṃ balaṃ phāsu-vihāraṃ pucchati.|| ||

Brahmāyu bho Gotama,||

Atha kho so māṇavako yena Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ etad avoca: ‘katāvakāso kho bhavaṃ samaṇena Gotamena,||
yassa dāni bhavaṃ kālaṃ maññatī’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Addasā kho sā parisā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ dūrato va āga-c-chantaṃ,||
disvāna atha naṃ1 okāsamakāsi yathā taṃ ñātassa yasassino.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo taṃ parisaṃ etad avoca: alaṃ bho,||
nisīdatha tumhe sake āsane,||
idhāhaṃ samaṇassa Gotamassa santike nisīdissāmīti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi.|| ||

Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato [143] kāye dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni sammannesi.|| ||

Addasā kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato kāye dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni,||
yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve dvīsu mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu kaṅkhati vicikicchati nādhi-muccati na sampasīdati.|| ||

Kosohite ca vatthaguyhe pahūtajivhatāya ca.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:|| ||

‘Ye me dvattiṃsāti sutā mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇā,|| ||

Duve tesaṃ na passāmi bhoto kāyasmiṃ Gotama.|| ||

Kacci kosohitaṃ bhoto vatthaguyhaṃ naruttama,|| ||

Nārīsahanāma savhayā kacci jivhā na rassikā3|| ||

Kacci pahutajivhosi? Yathā taṃ jāniyāmase,|| ||

Ninnāmayetaṃ tanukaṃ kaṅkhaṃ vinaya no ise,|| ||

Diṭṭha-dhamma-hitatthāya samparāya sukhāya ca,|| ||

Katāvakāsā pucchemu yaṃ kiñci abhipatthitan’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavato etad ahosi:

‘Passati kho me ayaṃ Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo dvattiṃsa mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇāni yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve dvīsu mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇesu kaṅkhati vicikicchati nādimuccati na sampasīdati kosohite ca c’atthaguyha pahūtajivhatāya cāti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā tathā-rūpaṃ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṃ abhisaṅkhāsi.|| ||

Yathā addasa Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato kosohitaṃ c’atthaguyhaṃ.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā jivhaṃ ninnāmetvā ubhopi kaṇṇasotāni anumasi parimasi1,||
ubho pi nāsikāsotāni anumasi parimasi.|| ||

Kevalampi lalāṭamaṇḍalaṃ jivhāya chādesi atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ gāthāhi paccabhāsi.|| ||

Ye te dvattiṃsāti sutā mahā-purisa-lakkhaṇā,|| ||

Sabbe te mama kāyasmiṃ mā te kaṅkhāhu brāhmaṇa.|| ||

Abhiññeyyaṃ abhiññātaṃ bhāvetabbañca bhāvitaṃ,|| ||

Pahātabbaṃ pahīnaṃ me tasmā Buddhosmi brāhmaṇa.|| ||

[144] Diṭṭha-dhamma-hitatthāya samparāya sukhāya ca.|| ||

Katāvakāso pucchassu yaṃ kiñci abhipatthitanti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa etad ahosi:

‘Katāvakāso kho’mhi samaṇena Gotamena.|| ||

Kin nu kho ahaṃ samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ puccheyyaṃ diṭṭha-dhammikaṃ vā atthaṃ samparāyikaṃ vāti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa etad ahosi:

‘Kusalo kho ahaṃ diṭṭha-dhammikānaṃ atthānaṃ,||
aññe pi maṃ diṭṭha-dhammikaṃ atthaṃ pucchanti.|| ||

Yan’nūn-ā-haṃ samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ samparāyikaṃ yeva atthaṃ puccheyya’nti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi.|| ||

‘Kathaṃ bho brāhmaṇo hoti kathaṃ bhavati vedagu,||
Tevijjo bho kathaṃ hoti sottiyo kintivuccati.|| ||

Arahaṃ bho kathaṃ hoti kathaṃ bhavati kevalī,||
Municca bho kathaṃ hoti Buddho kinti pavuccatī’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ gāthāhi paccabhāsi.|| ||

‘Pubbe-nivāsaṃ yo vedi saggāpāyañ ca passati,||
Atho jātikkhayaṃ patto abhiññā vosito muni.|| ||

Cittaṃ visuddhaṃ jānāti muttaṃ rāgehi sabbaso,||
Pahīna jātimaraṇo Brahma-cariyassa kevalī|| ||

Pāragu sabba-dhammānaṃ Buddho tādi pavucca’ ti.ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāy āsanā ekaṃsaṃ uttarā-saṅgaṃ karitvā Bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā Bhagavato pādāni mukhena ca paricumbati.|| ||

Pāṇīhi ca parisambāhati.|| ||

Nāmañca sāveti: Brahmāyu c’āhaṃ1 bho Gotama brāhmaṇo,||
Brahmāyu c’āhaṃ1 bho Gotama brāhmaṇo’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho sā parisā acchariyabbhūtacittā jātā ahosi: ‘acchariyaṃ vata bho,||
abbhūtaṃ vata bho,||
samaṇassa mahiddhi-katā mah-ā-nubhāvatā.|| ||

Yatrahi nāmo ayaṃ Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo ñāto yassasī eva-rūpaṃ paramani-pacca-kāraṃ karissatī’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ etad avoca:

[145] Alaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
uṭṭhaha,||
nisīda tvaṃ sake āsane,||
yato te mayi cittaṃ pasanna’nti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhabhitvā sake āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa ānupubbī-kathaṃ kathesi.|| ||

Seyyath’īdaṃ: ‘dāna-kathaṃ sīla-kathaṃ sagga-kathaṃ kāmānaṃ ādīnavaṃ okāraṃ saṅkilesaṃ nekkhamme ānisaṃsaṃ pakāsesi yadā Bhagavā aññāsi Brahmāyuṃ brāhmaṇaṃ kalla-cittaṃ mudu-cittaṃ vinīvaraṇa-cittaṃ udagga-cittaṃ pasanna-cittaṃ,||
atha yā Buddhānaṃ sāmukkaṃ-sikā Dhamma-desanā taṃ pakāsesi dukkhaṃ samudayaṃ nirodhaṃ Maggaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi nāma suddhaṃ vatthaṃ apagatakāḷakaṃ samma-d-eva rajanaṃ patigaṇheyya,||
evam evaṃ Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa tasmiññeva āsane virajaṃ vīta-malaṃ Dhamma-cakkhuṃ udapādi,||
yaṃ kiñci samudaya-dhammaṃ sabbaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhammanti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo diṭṭha-dhammo,||
patta-dhammo,||
vidita-dhammo,||
pariyogāḷha-dhammo tiṇṇa-vici-kiccho vigata-kathaṃ-katho vesārajja-p-patto apara-p-paccayo satthu sāsane Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:

“Abhikkantaṃ ho Gotama,||
abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bho Gotama nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya.|| ||

Paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Maggaṃ ācikkheyya,||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya ‘cakkhūmanto rūpāni dakkhinti’ ti.|| ||

Evam evaṃ bhotā Gotamena aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito es’āhaṃ Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi Dhammañ ca bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca,||
upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ Gotamamo dhāretu ajja-t-agge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṅgataṃ.|| ||

Adivāsetu ca me bhavaṃ Gotamo svātanāya bhattaṃ saddhiṃ bhikkhu-saṅghenā” ti.|| ||

Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhī-bhāvena.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato adivāsanaṃ viditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā pakkāmi.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo tassā rattiyā accayena sake nivesane paṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ paṭiyādāpetvā Bhagavato kālaṃ ārocāpesi:||
kālo bho Gotama,||
niṭṭhitaṃ bhatta’nti.|| ||

[146] Atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya yena Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Saddhiṃ bhikkhu-saṅghena.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo sattāhaṃ Buddhapamukhaṃ bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā tassa sattāhassa accayena videhesu cārikaṃ pakkāmi.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo acira-pakkantassa Bhagavato kālamakāsi.|| ||

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhu Bhagavantaṃ etad avocuṃ:

‘Brahmāyu bhante,||
brāhmaṇo kāla-kato,||
tassa kā gati,||
ko abhisamparāyo’ ti.|| ||

Paṇḍito bhikkhave,||
Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo,||
paccapādi Dhammass-ā-nu-dhammaṃ na ca maṃ Dhamm-ā-dhikaraṇaṃ vihesesi.|| ||

Brahmāyu bhikkhave,||
brāhmaṇo pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā opapātiko hoti tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokāti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Attamanā te bhikkhū Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ “abhinandun” ti.|| ||
