Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā udeno Bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati khemiyAmbavane.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo bārāṇasiṃ anuppatto hoti kenacid-eva karaṇīyena.|| ||

Atha kho Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo [158] chaṅghāvihāraṃ anucaṅkamamāno anuvicaramāno yena khemiyambavanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayen’āyasmā udeno abbhokāse caṅkamati.|| ||

Atha kho so Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo yen’āyasmā udeno ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā udenena saddhiṃ sammodi,||
sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā āyasmantaṃ udenaṃ caṅkamantaṃ anucaṅkamamāno evam āha: ambho samaṇa,||
n’atthi dhammiko paribbājo,||
evaṃ me ettha hoti,||
tañ ca kho bhavantarūpānaṃ vā adassanā,||
yo vā pan’ettha dhammo’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte āyasmā udeno caṅkamā orohitvā vihāraṃ pavisitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Ghoṭamukhopi kho brāhmaṇo caṅkamā orohitvā vihāraṃ pavisitvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhitaṃ kho Ghoṭamukhaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ āyasmā udeno etad avoca: saṃvijjante kho brāhmaṇa,||
āsanāni sace ākaṅkhasi nisidā’ ti.

Etad eva ca kho pana mayaṃ bhoto udenassa āgamayamānā na nisīdāma.|| ||

Kathaṃ hi nāma mādiso pubbe animantito āsane nisiditabbaṃ maññeyyā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṃ udenaṃ etad avoca: ambho samaṇa,||
n’atthi dhammiko paribbājo,||
evaṃ me ettha hoti,||
tañ ca kho bhavantarūpānaṃ vā adassanā,||
yo vā pan’ettha dhammo’ ti.|| ||

Sace kho pana me tvaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
anuññeyyaṃ anujāneyyāsi,||
paṭikkositabbañ ca paṭikkoseyyāsi,||
yassa ca pana me bhāsitassa attha na jāneyyāsi,||
mamaṃ yeva tattha uttariṃ paṭipuccheyyāsi: idaṃ bho udena kathaṃ,||
imassa kvatthoti? Evaṃ katvā sayā no ettha kathā-sallāpoti.|| ||

Anuññeyyaṃ khv’āhaṃ bhoto udenassa anujānissāmi,||
paṭikkositabbañca paṭikkosissāmi.|| ||

Yassa ca panāhaṃ [159] bhoto udenassa bhāsitassa atthaṃ na jānissāmi,||
bhavantaṃ yeva tattha udenaṃ uttariṃ paṭipucchissāmi: idaṃ bho udena kathaṃ,||
imassa kvattho’ ti?|| ||

Evaṃ katvā hotu no ettha kathā-sallāpoti.|| ||

Cattāro’me brāhmaṇa,||
puggalā santo saṃvijj’amānā lokasmiṃ,||
katame cattāro: idha brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo attantapo hoti atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto.|| ||

Idha pana brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo parantapo hoti para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto.|| ||

Idha brāmhaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo attantapo ca hoti atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
parantapo ca para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto.|| ||

Idha pana brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo n’evattantapo hoti nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sītibhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Imesaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
catunnaṃ puggalānaṃ katamo te puggalo cittaṃ ārādhetī’ ti?|| ||

Yvāyaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo attantapo atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
ayaṃ me puggalo cittaṃ nārādheti.|| ||

Yopāyaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo parantapo para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
ayam pi me puggalo cittaṃ nārādheti.|| ||

Yopāyaṃ bho udena,puggalo attantapo ca atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto parantapo ca para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
ayam pi me puggalo cittaṃ nārādheti.|| ||

Yo ca kho ayaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo n’evattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sītībhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ me puggalo cittaṃ ārādhetī’ ti.|| ||

Kasmā pana te brāhmaṇa,||
ime tayo puggalā cittaṃ nārādhen’ ti?|| ||

Yvāyaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo attantapo atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so attāṇaṃ sukha-kāmaṃ dukkha-paṭikkūlaṃ ātāpeti paritāpeti,iminā me ayaṃ puggalo cittaṃ nārādheti.|| ||

[160] Yopāyaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo parantapo para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so paraṃ sukha-kāmaṃ dukkha-paṭikkūlaṃ ātāpeti paritāpeti,||
iminā me ayaṃ puggalo cittaṃ nārādheti.|| ||

Yopāyaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo attantapo ca atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
parantapo ca para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so attāṇañ ca parañca sukha-kāmaṃ dukkha-paṭikkūlaṃ ātāpeti paritāpeti,||
iminā me ayaṃ puggalo cittaṃ nārādheti.|| ||

Yo ca kho ayaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo n’evattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sītībhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

So attāṇañ ca parañca sukha-kāme dukkha-paṭikkūle n’eva ātāpeti,||
na paritāpeti,||
iminā me ayaṃ puggalo cittaṃ ārādhe’ ti.|| ||

Dvemā brāhmaṇa parisā,||
katamā dve: idha brāhmaṇa,||
ekaccā parisā sārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu puttabhariyaṃ pariyesati,||
dāsidāsaṃ pariyesati,||
khetta-vatthuṃ pariyesati,||
jāta-rūpa-rajataṃ pariyesati.|| ||

Idha pana brāhmaṇa,||
ekaccā parisā asārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu puttabhariyaṃ pahāya dāsidāsaṃ pahāya khetta-vatthuṃ pahāya jāta-rūpa-rajataṃ pahāya agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā.|| ||

Yvāyaṃ brāhmaṇa,puggalo n’evattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sītībhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Imaṃ tvaṃ brāhmaṇā,puggalaṃ katamassa parisāyaṃ bahulaṃ samanupassasi: yā c’āyaṃ parisā sārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu puttabhariyaṃ pariyesati,||
dāsidāsaṃ pariyesati,||
khetta-vatthuṃ pariyesati,||
jāta-rūpa-rajataṃ pariyesati.|| ||

Yā c’āyaṃ parisā asārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu puttabhariyaṃ pahāya dāsidāsaṃ pahāya khetta-vatthuṃ pahāya jāta-rūpa-rajataṃ pahāya agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā’ ti.|| ||

[161]Yvāyaṃ bho udena,||
puggalo n’evattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sitībhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Imāhaṃ puggalaṃ yā’yaṃ parisā asārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu puttabhariyaṃ pahāya dāsidāsaṃ pahāya khetta-vatthuṃ pahāya jāta-rūpa-rajataṃ pahāya agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbājitā,||
imissaṃ parisāyaṃ bahulaṃ samanupassāmi’ ti.|| ||

Idān’eva kho pana te brāhmaṇa,||
bhāsitaṃ: mayaṃ evaṃ ājānāma,||
ambho samaṇa,||
n’atthi dhammiko paribbājo,||
evaṃ me ettha hoti,||
tañ ca kho bhavantarūpānaṃ vā adassanā,||
yo vā pan’ettha dhammo’ ti.|| ||

Addhāmesā bho udena,||
sānuggahā vācā bhāsitā atthi dhammiko paribbājo,||
evaṃ me ettha hoti,||
evañca pana maṃ bhavaṃ udeno dhāretu.|| ||

Yecime bhotā udenena cattāro puggalo saṅkhittena vuttā vitthārena avibhattā,||
sādhu me bhavaṃ udeno ime cattāro puggale vitthārena vibhajatu anukampaṃ upādāyāti.|| ||

Tena hi brāhmaṇa,||
suṇāhi,sādhukaṃ manasi karohi,||
bhāsissāmiti.|| ||

Evaṃ bhoti kho Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo āyasmato udenassa paccassosi.|| ||

Āyasmā udeno etad avoca:|| ||

Katamo ca brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo attantapo atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto: idha brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo acelako hoti mutt’ācāro,||
hatthāvalekhano na ehi-bhadantiko na tiṭṭha-bhadantiko nābhihaṭaṃ na uddissa kaṭaṃ na nimantanaṃ sādiyati,||
so na kumhimukhā patigaṇhāti,||
na khalopimukhā patigaṇhāti,||
na eḷaka-mantaraṃ na daṇḍa-mantaraṃ na musalamantaraṃ na dvinnaṃ bhuñjamānānaṃ na gabbhiniyā na pāyamānāya [162] na purisantaragatāya na saṅkittīsu na yattha sā upaṭṭhito hoti,||
na yattha makkhikā saṇḍasaṇḍacārinī,||
na macchaṃ na maṃsaṃ na suraṃ na merayaṃ na thusodakaṃ pivati,||
so ekāgāriko vā hoti ekālopiko vā,||
dvāgāriko vā hoti dvālopiko vā sattāgāriko vā hoti sattālopiko vā,ekissāpi dattiyā yāpeti,||
dvīhipi dattīhi yāpeta sattahipi dattehi yāpeti.|| ||

Ekāhikam pi āhāraṃ āhāreti,||
dvīhikampi āhāraṃ āhāreti,||
sattāhikampi āhāraṃ āhāreti iti eva-rūpaṃ addhamāsikampi pariyāyabhattabhojanānuyogamanuyutto viharati.|| ||

So sākabhakkho vā heti,||
sāmākabhakkho vā hoti,||
nīvārabhakkho vā hoti daddulabhakkho vā hoti,||
haṭabhakkho vā hoti,||
kaṇabhakkho vā hoti,||
ācāmabhakkho vā hoti,||
piññākabhakkho vā hoti.|| ||

Tiṇabhakkho vā hoti,||
gomayabhakkho vā hoti,||
vanamūlaphalāhāro yāpeti pavatta-phalabhoji.|| ||

Se sāṇāni pi dhāreti,||
masāṇāni pi dhāreti,||
cavadussāni pi dhāreti,||
paṃsukulāni pi dhāreti,||
tirīṭāni pi dhāreti,||
ajināni pi dhāreti,||
ajinakkhipam pi dhāreti,||
kusa-cīram pi dhāreti,||
vākacīram pi dhāreti,||
phalakacīram pi dhāreti.|| ||

Kesakambalam pi dhāreti,||
vāḷakambalam pi dhāreti,||
ulūkapakkham pi dhāreti.|| ||

Kesamassulocako pi hoti kesa-massulocanānuyogamanuyutto,||
ubbaṭṭako pi hoti āsanapaṭikkhitto,||
ukkuṭiko pi hoti ukkuṭikappadhānamanuyutto,||
kaṇṭakāpassayiko pi hoti kaṇṭakāpassaye seyyaṃ kappeti,||
sāyatatiyakam pi udakorohaṇānuyogamanuyutto viharati.|| ||

Iti eva-rūpaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ kāyassa ātāpana-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ vuccati brāhmaṇa,puggalo attantapo atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto.|| ||

Katamo ca brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo parantapo para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto: idha brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo orabhiko hoti,||
sūkariko sākuntiko māgaviko eddo macchaghātako coro coraghātako bandhanāgāriko,||
ye vā pan’aññe pi keci Kurūrakammantā,ayaṃ vuccati brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo parantapo para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto.|| ||

Katamo ca brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo attantapo ca atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto parantapo ca para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto: idha brāhmaṇa,||
ekacco puggalo rājā vā hoti khattiyo muddhābhisitto,||
brāhmaṇā vā mahāsāḷo,||
so puratthimena nagarassa navaṃ santhāgāraṃ kārāpetvā kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kharājinaṃ nivāsetvā sappitelena kāyaṃ abbhañjitvā migavisāṇena piṭṭhiṃ kaṇaḍūvamāno santhāgāraṃ pavisati saddhiṃ mahesiyā brāhmaṇena ca purohitena.|| ||

So tattha anantara-hitāya bhūmiyā haritupattāya seyyaṃ kappeti,||
ekissā gāviyā sarūpavacchāya yaṃ ekasmiṃ thane khiraṃ hoti,||
tena rājā yāpeti.|| ||

Yaṃ dutiyasmiṃ thane khīraṃ hoti,||
tena mahesi yāpeti.|| ||

Yaṃ tatiyasmiṃ thane khiraṃ hoti,||
tena brāhmaṇo purohito yāpeti.|| ||

Yaṃ catutthasmiṃ thane khīraṃ hoti,||
tena aggiṃ juhanti.|| ||

Avasesena vacchako yāpeti.|| ||

So evam āha: ‘ettakā usabhā haññantu yaññ’atthāya,||
ettakā vacchatarā haññantu yaññ’atthāya,||
ettikā vacchatariyo haññantu yaññ’atthāya,||
ettakā ajā haññantu yaññ’atthāya,||
ettakā urabbhā haññantu yaññ’atthāya,||
ettakā rukkhā chijjantu yūpatthāya,||
ettakā dabbā lūyantu barihisatthāyā’ ti.|| ||

Ye pissa te honti dāsāti vā pessāti vā kamma-karāti vā,||
tepi daṇḍatajjitā bhayatajjitā assumukhā rudamānā parikammāni karonti.|| ||

Ayaṃ vuccati brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo attantapo ca atta-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto parantapo ca para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto.|| ||

Katamo ca brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo n’evattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sitībhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharati: ‘idha brāhmaṇa,||
Tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathi Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā.|| ||

So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti ādi kalyāṇaṃ majjhe kalyāṇaṃ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ savyañ janaṃ kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā aññatarasmiṃ kule paccājāto,||
so taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā Tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati.|| ||

So tena saddhā paṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘sambādho gharāvāso rajo-patho,||
abbhokāso pabbajjā,||
na-y-idaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekanta-paripuṇṇaṃ ekanta-parisuddhaṃ saṅkhalikhitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ carituṃ,||
yan nūn-ā-haṃ kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyan’ ti.|| ||

So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya appaṃ vā ñāti parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno bhikkhūnaṃ sikkhāsājivasamāpanno pāṇ-ā-tipātaṃ pahāya pāṇ-ā-tipātā paṭivirato hoti,||
nihita-daṇḍo nihita-sattho lajji dayā-panno sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī viharati.|| ||

Adinn’ādānaṃ pahāya adinn’ādānā paṭivirato hoti,||
dinn’ādāyī dinna-pāṭikaṅkhī athenena suci-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Abrahma-cariyaṃ pahāya brahma-cārī hoti,||
ārā-cārī virato methunā gāma-dhammā.|| ||

Musā-vādaṃ pahāya musā-vādā paṭivirato hoti,||
sacca-vādī sacca-sandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa.|| ||

Pisunaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pisunāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,||
ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya,amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya,||
iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā,||
samagg’ārāmo samagga-rato samagga-nandi samagga-karaṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,||
yā sā vācā neḷā kaṇṇa-sukhā pemanīyā hadayaṃ-gamā porī bahu-jana-kantā bahu-jana-manāpā,||
tathā-rūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Sampha-p-palāpaṃ pahāya sampha-p-palāpā paṭivirato hoti,||
kāla-vādī bhūta-vādī attha-vādī dhamma-vādī vinaya-vādī nidhāna-vatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyanta-vatiṃ attha-saṃhitaṃ.|| ||

So bījagāma-bhūta-gāma-samārambhā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Eka-bhattiko hoti ratt’ūparato virato vikāla-bhojanā.|| ||

Nacca-gīta-vādita-visūka-dassanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Mālā-gandha-vilepana-dhāraṇa-maṇḍana-vibhūsana-ṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Uccā-sayana-mahā-sayanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Jātarūpa-rajatapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti āmakadhañña-paṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmakamaṃsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Itthikumārikapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dāsidāsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ajeḷakapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kukkuṭasūkarapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Hatthigavāssavaḷavāpaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Khetta-vatthupaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dūteyyapahīnagaman-ā-nuyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kaya-vikkayā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Tulā-kūṭakaṃsakuṭamānakūṭā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ukkoṭana-vañcana-nikati-sāci-yogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Chedana-vadha-bandhana-viparāmosa-ālopa-sahasākārā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

So santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihārikena cīvarena,||
kucchi-parihārikena piṇḍa-pātena,||
so yena yen’eva pakkamati,||
samādāyeva pakkamati.|| ||

Seyyathā pi nāma pakkhī sakuṇo yena yen’eva ḍeti,||
sapattabhārova ḍeti.|| ||

Evam evaṃ bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihāri kena cīvarena,||
kucchi-parihārikena piṇḍa-pātena.|| ||

Yena yen’eva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati.|| ||

So iminā ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajja-sukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

So cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ cakkhu’ndriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,rakkhati cakkhu’ndriyaṃ,cakkhu’ndriyesaṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ sot’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,rakkhati sot’indriyaṃ,||
sotendriyesaṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So ghānena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ ghānendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,rakkhati ghānendriyaṃ,ghān’endriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ jivhendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,rakkhati jivhendriyaṃ,jivhendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phūsitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ kāyendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,rakkhati kāyendriyaṃ,kāyendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ manendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,tassa saṃvaraṃ paṭipajjati,rakkhati manendriyaṃ,manendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So iminā ariyena indriya-saṃvarena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ abyāsekasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti|| ||

So abhikkante paṭikkante sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
ālokite vilokite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
sammiñjite pasārite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
saṅghāṭipatta-cīvaradhāraṇe sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
uccāra-passāvakamme sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhī-bhāve sampajāna-kārī hoti.|| ||

So iminā ca ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriya-saṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena sati-sampajaññena samannāgato vivittaṃ sen’āsanaṃ bhajati.|| ||

Araññaṃ rukkha-mūlaṃ pabbataṃ kandaraṃ giri-guhaṃ susānaṃ vana-pattaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ.|| ||

So pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ panidhāya,||
parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭha-petvā.|| ||

So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya vigat-ā-bhijjhena cetasā viharati,||
abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vyāpāda-padosaṃ pahāya avyāpanna-citto viharati sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī.|| ||

Vyāpāda-padosā cittaṃ parisodheti,||
thīna-middhaṃ pahāya vigatatīnamiddho viharati āloka-saññi sato sampajāno.|| ||

Thīna-middhā cittaṃ parisodheti,||
uddaccakukkuccaṃ pahāya anuddhato viharati ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vici-kicchaṃ pahāya tiṇṇa-vici-kiccho viharati akathaṃ-kathī kusalesu dhammesu.|| ||

Vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

So ime pañca-nīvaraṇe pahāya cetaso upakkilese paññāya dubbalī-karaṇe,||
vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati.|| ||

Sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti. Yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:|| ||

‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā,||
pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigatupakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte pubbe nivāsānu-s-satiñāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarati,||
seyyath’īdaṃ: ekam pi jātiṃ dve pi jātiyo,||
Tisso pi jātiyo catasso pi jātiyo pañca pi jātiyo dasa pi jātiyo vīsatim pi jātiyo tiṃsam pi jātiyo cattārīsamipi jātiyo paññāsam pi jātiyo jāti-satam pi jāti-sahassam pi jāti-sata-sahassam pi anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe anekepi vivaṭṭa-kappe anekepi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe amutrāsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo evṅgotto evaṃ-vaṇṇo evam-āhāro evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedi evam-āyu-pariyanto.|| ||

So tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ5 tatrāpāsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo evṅgotto evaṃ-vaṇṇo evam-āhāro evaṃ-sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedi evam-āyu-pariyanto.|| ||

So tato cuto idh’ūpapanno’ ti.|| ||

Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarati.|| ||

So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigat’ūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte4 sattāṇaṃ cūtupapātañāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne,||
hine paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathā-kamm’ūpage satte pajānāti.|| ||

Ime vata bhonto sattā kāya-du-c-caritena samannāgatā vacī-du-c-caritena samannāgatā mano-du-c-caritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ upavādakā micchā-diṭṭhikā micchā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ Nirayaṃ upapannā,||
ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāya-sucaritena samannāgatā vacī-sucaritena samannāgatā mano-sucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ anupavādakā sammā-diṭṭhikā sammā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapannā’ ti.|| ||

ayaṃ dukkha-nirodho ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti,||
ayaṃ dukkha-nirodha-gāminī-paṭipadā ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

Ime āsavāni yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti,||
ayaṃ āsava-samudayoti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti,||
ayaṃ āsava-nirodhoti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti,||
ayaṃ āsava-nirodha-gāminī-paṭipadā ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

Tassa evaṃ jānato evaṃ passato kām’āsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccati,||
bhav’āsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccati,||
avijj-ā-savā pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṃ hoti: khīṇā jāti vusitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ nāparaṃ itthattāyā ti pajānāti.|| ||

Ayaṃ vuccati brāhmaṇa,||
puggalo n’evattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
na parantapo na para-paritāpanānuyogamanuyutto,||
so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭhe’va dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sītibhūto sukha-paṭisaṃvedi brahma-bhūtena attanā viharatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṃ udenaṃ etad avoca: abhikkantaṃ bho udena,||
abhikkantaṃ bho udena,||
seyyathā pi bho udena,||
nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya,||
paṭi-c-channaṃ vā vivareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Maggaṃ ācikkheyya,||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya,||
‘cakkhu-manto rūpāni dakkhintī’ti,||
evam evaṃ bhotā udenena aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.|| ||

Es’āhaṃ bhavantaṃ udenaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi Dhammañ ca bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca.|| ||

Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ udeno dhāretu ajja-t-agge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan’ ti.|| ||

Mā kho maṃ tvaṃ brāhmaṇa,saraṇaṃ agamāsi,||
tam eva tvaṃ Bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gaccha yam ahaṃ saraṇaṃ gatoti.|| ||

Kahaṃ pana bho udena,||
etarahi so bhavaṃ Gotamo viharati arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddhoti?

Parinibbuto kho brāhmaṇa,||
etarahi so Bhagavā arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddhoti.|| ||

Sace hi mayaṃ bho udena,||
suṇeyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassu yojanesu,||
dasa pi mayaṃ yojanāni gaccheyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya Arahantaṃ Sammā Sambuddhaṃ.|| ||

Sace mayaṃ bho udena,||
suṇeyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ vīsatiyā yojanesu,vīsatipi mayaṃ yojanāni gaccheyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya Arahantaṃ Sammā Sambuddhaṃ.|| ||

Sace hi mayaṃ bho udena,||
suṇeyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ tiṃsāya yojanesu,||
tiṃsmapi mayaṃ yojanāni gaccheyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya Arahantaṃ Sammā Sambuddhaṃ.|| ||

Sace mayaṃ bho udena,||
suṇeyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ cattārisāya yojanesu,||
cattārismapi mayaṃ yojanāni gaccheyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya Arahantaṃ Sammā Sambuddhaṃ.|| ||

Sace mayaṃ bho udena,||
suṇeyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ paññāsāya yojanesu,||
paññāsam pi mayaṃ yojanāni gaccheyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya Arahantaṃ Sammā Sambuddhaṃ.|| ||

Yojanasatepi [163] mayaṃ bho udena,||
suṇeyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ,||
yojanasatam pi mayaṃ gaccheyyāma taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ dassanāya Arahantaṃ Sammā Sambuddhaṃ.|| ||

Yato ca kho bho udena,||
parinibbuto so bhavaṃ Gotamo,||
parinibbutampi mayaṃ taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāma Dhammañ ca bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca.|| ||

Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ udeno dhāretu ajja-t-agge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gataṃ.|| ||

Atthi ca me bho udena,||
aṅgarājā devasikaṃ niccabhikkhaṃ dadāti.|| ||

Tatohaṃ bhoto udenassa ekaṃ niccabhikkhaṃ dadāmīti.|| ||

Kiṃ pana te brāhmaṇa,||
aṅgarājā devasikaṃ niccabhikkhaṃ dadātīti? Pañca bho udena,||
kahāpaṇasatānīti na kho no brāhmaṇa,||
kappati jāta-rūpa-rajata paṭiggahetunti.|| ||

Sace taṃ bhoto udenassa na kappati,||
vihāraṃ bhoto udenassa kārāpessāmīti.|| ||

Sace kho me tvaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
vihāraṃ kārāpetukāmo,pāṭalīputte Saṅghassa upaṭṭhāna-sālaṃ kārāpehīti.|| ||

Imināp’ahaṃ1 bhoto udenassa bhiyyoso-mattāya atta-mano abhiraddho,||
yaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ udeno saṅghe dāne sam-ā-dapeti.|| ||

Es’āhaṃ bho udena,||
etissā ca niccabhikkhāya aparāya ca niccabhikkhāya pāṭaliputte Saṅghassa upaṭṭhāna-sālaṃ kārāpessāmiti.|| ||

Atha kho Ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo etissā ca niccabhikkhāya aparāya ca niccabhikkhāya pāṭaliputte Saṅghassa upaṭṭhāna-sālaṃ kārāpesi.|| ||

Sā etarahi Ghoṭamukhiti vuccatī ti.|| ||
