Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthīyaṃ viharati Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.|| ||

Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:|| ||

“Bhikkhavo” ti.|| ||

“Bhadante” ti te bhikkhū Bhagavato paccassosuṃ.||
Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

“Uddesavibhaṅgaṃ vo, bhikkhave, desissāmi.|| ||

Taṃ suṇātha sādhukaṃ manasi-karotha,||
bhāsissāmī” ti.|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato paccassosuṃ,||
Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

Tathā tathā bhikkhave,||
bhikkhu upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yathā’ssa upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya; bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā,||
idaṃ vatvā Sugato uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ pāvisi.|| ||

Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ acira-pakkantassa Bhagavato etad ahosi:||
‘Idaṃ kho no āvuso,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

Tathā tathā bhikkhave bhikkhū upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yath’āssa upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya,||
bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Ko nu kho imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajeyyāti?|| ||

Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ etad ahosi:||
‘Ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ,||
pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ; yan nūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā [224] Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmāti.|| ||

Atha kho te bhikkhū yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā Mahā Kaccānena saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhu āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etad avocuṃ:|| ||

Idaṃ kho no āvuso Kaccāna,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho.|| ||

Tathā tathā bhikkhave bhikkhū upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yath’āssa upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya,||
bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Tesaṃ no āvuso Kaccāna,||
amhākaṃ acira-pakkantassa Bhagavato etad ahosi:|| ||

Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Ko nu kho imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhatthassa vittharena atthaṃ vibhajeyyāti?|| ||

Ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ,||
pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ; yan nūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ten’upasaṅkameyyāma upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmāti.|| ||

Vibhajat’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno ti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso sāratthiko sāragavesī sārapariyesanaṃ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato ati-k-kamm’eva mūlaṃ atkkamma khandhaṃ sākhāpalāse sāraṃ pariyesitabbaṃ maññeyya,— evaṃ sampadam idaṃ.|| ||

Āyasmantānaṃ Satthari sammukhībhute taṃ Bhagavantaṃ atisitvā amhe etam atthaṃ paṭipucchitabbaṃ maññatha.|| ||

So h’āvuso Bhagavā jānaṃ jānāti,||
passaṃ pasasati,||
cakkhu-bhūto ñāṇa-bhūto dhamma-bhūto brahamabhūto vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmī Tathāgato,||
so c’eva pan’etassa kālo ahosi yaṃ Bhagavantaṃ yeva etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha.|| ||

Yathā vo Bhagavā vyākareyya,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāthā ti.|| ||

Addh’āvuso Kaccāna,||
Bhagavā jānaṃ jānāti,||
passaṃ passati,||
cakkhu-bhūto ñāṇa-bhūto dhamma-bhūto vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmī Tathāgato.|| ||

So c’eva pan’etassa kālo yaṃ Bhagavantaṃ yeva etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāma,||
yathā no Bhagavā [225] vyākareyya,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāma.|| ||

Api c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūṇaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ.|| ||

Vibhajat’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno agarukaritvā ti.|| ||

Tena h’āvuso,||
suṇātha sādhukaṃ manasi-karotha bhāsissāmīti.|| ||

Evam āvuso ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Kaccānassa paccassosuṃ.|| ||

Āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno etad avoca:|| ||

Yaṃ kho no āvuso Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho:|| ||

Tathā tathā bhikkhave bhikkhū upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yath’āssa upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya,||
bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Imassa kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa evaṃ vitthārena atthaṃ ājānāmi.|| ||

Kathañ c’āvuso,||
bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭanti vuccati?|| ||

Idh’āvuso bhikkhuno cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā rūpanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Rūpa-nimittassādagathitaṃ rūpa-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ rūpa-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭan ti vuccati.|| ||

Sotena saddaṃ sutvā saddanimittānusārī viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Sadda-nimittassādagathitaṃ sadda-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ sadda-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Ghānena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā gandhanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Gandha-nimittassādagathitaṃ gandha-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ Gandha-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā rasanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Rasa-nimittassādagathitaṃ Rasa-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ rasa-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phusitvā phoṭṭhabbanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Phoṭṭhabba-nimittassādagathitaṃ phoṭṭhabba-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ Phoṭṭhabba-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Manasā dhammaṃ viññāya dhammanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Dhamma-nimittassādagathitaṃ Dhamma-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ dhamma-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhittaṃ visaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Evaṃ kho āvuso bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ vikkhattaṃ visaṭan ti vuccati.|| ||

Kathañ c’āvuso,||
bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭan ti vuccati?|| ||

Idh’āvuso bhikkhuno cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na rūpanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Na rūpa-nimittassādagathitaṃ na rūpa-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ na rūpa-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭan ti [226] vuccati.|| ||

Sotena saddaṃ sutvā na saddanimittānusārī viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Na sadda-nimittassādagathitaṃ na sadda-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ na Sadda-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Ghānena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na gandhanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Na gandha-nimittassādagathitaṃ na gandha-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ na gandha-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na rasanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Na rasa-nimittassādagathitaṃ na rasa-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ na Rasa-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Kāyena phoṭaeṭhabbaṃ phusitvā na phoṭṭhabbanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Na Phoṭṭhabba-nimittassādagathitaṃ na phoṭṭhabba-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ na phoṭṭhabba-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na dhammanimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.||
Na dhamma-nimittassādagathitaṃ na dhamma-nimittassādavinibaddhaṃ na dhamma-nimittassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Evaṃ kho āvuso,||
bahiddhā viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭanti vuccati.|| ||

Kathañcāvuso ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ saṇṭhitanti1 vuccati: idh’āvuso bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa vivekajapītisukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Vivekajapītisukhassādagathitaṃ vivekajapītisukhassādavinibaddhaṃ vivekajapītisukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ saṇṭhitanti vuccati.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso,||
bhikkhū vitakka-vicāranaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhi-jaṃ pitisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa samādhijapītisukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti samādhijapītisukhassādagathitaṃ

Samādhijapītisukhassādavinibaddhaṃ samādhijapītisukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ saṇṭhitanti vuccati.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso,||
bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno.|| ||

Sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: upekkhako satimā sukha-vihāriti.|| ||

Taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa upekkhāsukhānusāri3 viññāṇaṃ hoti,||
upekkhāsukhassādagathitaṃ upekkhāsukhassādavinibaddhaṃ

Upekkhāsukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ saṇṭhitanti vuccati.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso,||
bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa adukkha-m-asukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Adukkhamasukhassādagathitaṃ adukkha-m-asukhassādavinibaddhaṃ adukkha-m-asukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ saṇṭhitanti1 vuccati.

Kathañcāvuso,||
ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ asaṇṭhitanti2 vuccati: idh’āvuso bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati tassa na vivekajapītisukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Na vivekajapītisukhassādagathitaṃ na vivekajapītisukhassādavinibaddhaṃ na vivekajapītisukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ asaṇṭhitanti vuccati.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso,||
bhikkhu vitakka-vicāranaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhi-jaṃ pitisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa na samādhijapītisukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Na samādhijapītisukhassādagathitaṃ na

Samādhijapītisukhassādavinibaddhaṃ na samādhijapītisukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ asaṇṭhitanti vuccati.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso,||
bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno.|| ||

Sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: ‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti.|| ||

Taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa na upekkhāsukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Na upekkhāsukhassādagathitaṃ na upekkhāsukhassādavinibaddhaṃ na

Upekkhāsukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ asaṇṭhitanti vuccati.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso,||
bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Tassa na adukkha-m-asukhānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Na adukkha-m-asukhassādagathitaṃ na adukkha-m-asukhassādavinibaddhaṃ na adukkha-m-asukhassādasaṃyojanasaṃyuttaṃ ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ asaṇṭhitanti vuccati evaṃ kho āvuso,||
ajjhattaṃ cittaṃ asaṇṭhitanti1 vuccati.|| ||

Kathañcāvuso,||
anupādā paritassanā hoti: idh’āvuso,||
a-s-sutavā puthujjano ariyānaṃ adassāvī ariya-Dhammassa akovido ariya-Dhamme avinīto rūpaṃ attato samanupassati rūpa-vantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ attani vā rūpaṃ rūpasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ rūpaṃ vipariṇamati.|| ||

Aññathā hoti tassa rūpa-vipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā rūpa-vipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa rūpa-vipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti.|| ||

Vighātavā ca apekkhavā2 ca anupādāya ca paritassati.|| ||

Vedanaṃ [228] attato samanupassati vedanavantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ attani vā vedanaṃ vedanasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ vedanaṃ vipariṇamati,||
aññathā hoti.|| ||

Tassa vedan-ā-vipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā vedan-ā-vipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa vedan-ā-vipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti.|| ||

Vighātavā ca apekkhavā ca anupādāya ca paritassati.|| ||

Saññaṃ attato samanupassati saññā-vantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ attani vā saññaṃ saññasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ saññaṃ vipariṇamati aññathā hoti.|| ||

Tassa saññavipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā saññavipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa saññavipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti.|| ||

Vighātavā ca apekkhavā ca anupādāya ca paritassati.|| ||

Saṅkhāraṃ attato samanupassati saṅkhāra-vantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ attani vā saṅkhāraṃ saṅkhārasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ saṅkhāraṃ vipariṇamati aññathā hoti.

Tassa saṅkhāra-vipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā saṅkhāra-vipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa saṅkhāra-vipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti.|| ||

Vighātavā ca apekkhavā2 ca anupādāya ca paritassati.|| ||

Viññāṇaṃ attato samanupassati viññāṇavantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ attani vā

Viññāṇaṃ,||
viññāṇasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ viññāṇaṃ vipariṇamati.|| ||

Aññathā hoti.|| ||

Tassa viññāṇa-vipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā viññāṇa-vipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa viññāṇa-vipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti.|| ||

Vighātavā ca apekkhavā anupādāya ca paritassati.|| ||

Evaṃ kho āvuso,||
anupādā paritassanā hoti.|| ||

Kathañcāvuso,||
anupādā3 aparitassanā hoti: idh’āvuso,||
sutavā ariya-sāvako ariyānaṃ dassāvī ariya-Dhammassa kovido ariya-Dhamme vinīto na rūpaṃ attato samanupassati,||
na rūpa-vantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ na attani vā rūpaṃ na rūpasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ rūpaṃ vipariṇamati.|| ||

Aññathā hoti.|| ||

Tassa rūpa-vipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā na ca rūpa-vipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa na rūpa-vipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Cetaso pariyādānā na c’eva uttāsavā4 hoti.|| ||

Na ca vighātavā na ca apekkhavā anupādāya ca na paritassati.|| ||

Na vedanaṃ attato samanupassati,||
na vedanavantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ na attani vā vedanaṃ,||
na vedanasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ vedanaṃ vipariṇamati,||
aññathā hoti.|| ||

Tassa vedan-ā-vipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā na ca

Vedanāvipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa na vedan-ā-vipariṇāmānuparivattajā paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

Na saññaṃ attato samanupassati na saññā-vantaṃ vā attāṇaṃ na attani vā saññaṃ,||
na saññasmiṃ vā attāṇaṃ.|| ||

Tassa taṃ saññaṃ vipariṇamati,||
aññathā hoti.|| ||

Tassa saññavipariṇām-aññathā-bhāvā na ca saññavipariṇām-ā-nuparivatti viññāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

Tassa na saññavipariṇāmānuparivattajā

Paritassanā dhamma-samuppādā cittaṃ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti.|| ||

bhikkhu upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yathāssu upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya,||
bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Imassa kho ahaṃ āvuso,||
Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa evaṃ vitthārena [229] atthaṃ ājānāmi.|| ||

Ākaṅkha-mānā ca pana tumhe āyasmanto,||
Bhagavantaṃ yeva upasaṅkamitvā etamanthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha.|| ||

Yathā vo Bhagavā vyākaroti,||
tathā naṃ dhāreyyāthā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho te bhikkhū āyasmato Mahā Kaccānassa bhāsitaṃ abhinan’ditvā anumo-ditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdīṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū Bhagavantaṃ etad avocuṃ: yaṃ kho no bhante,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddissitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho.|| ||

Tathā tathā bhikkhave bhikkhū upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yath’āssa upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya,||
bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Tesaṃ no bhante,||
amhākaṃ acira-pakkantassa Bhagavato etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Idaṃ kho no āvuso,||
Bhagavā saṅkhittena uddesaṃ uddissitvā vitthārena atthaṃ avibhajitvā uṭṭhāy āsanā vihāraṃ paviṭṭho.|| ||

Tathā tathā bhikkhave bhikkhū upapari-k-kheyya,||
yathā yath’āssa upapari-k-khato bahiddhā c’assa viññāṇaṃ avikkhittaṃ avisaṭaṃ ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhitaṃ anupādāya na paritasseyya,||
bahiddhā bhikkhave,||
viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaṭe sati ajjhattaṃ asaṇṭhite,||
anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṃ āyatiṃ jāti-jarā-maraṇa-dukkha-samudaya-sambhavo na hotī ti.|| ||

Ko nu kho imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajeyyāti: tesaṃ no bhante,||
amhākaṃ etad ahosi: ‘ayaṃ kho āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno Satthu c’eva saṃvaṇṇito,||
sambhāvito ca viññūnaṃ sabrahma-cārīnaṃ,||
pahoti c’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno imassa Bhagavatā saṅkhittena uddesassa uddiṭṭhassa vitthārena atthaṃ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṃ vibhajituṃ,||
yan nūna mayaṃ yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno,||
ten’upasaṅkameyyāma.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyāmā’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho mayaṃ bhante,||
yen’āyasmā Mahā Kaccāno,||
ten’upasaṅkamimha.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Mahā Kaccānaṃ etam atthaṃ paṭipucchimha.|| ||

Tesaṃ no bhante āyasmatā Mahā-Kaccānena imehi ākārehi imehi padehi imehi byañjanehi attho vibhatto’ ti.|| ||

Paṇḍito bhikkhave,||
Mahā Kaccāno,||
mahā-pañño bhikkhave,||
mahā kaccāno,||
mañ ce pi tumhe bhikkhave,||
etam atthaṃ paṭipuccheyyātha,||
aham pi taṃ evam evaṃ vyākareyyaṃ,||
yathā taṃ Mahā-Kaccānena vyākataṃ eso cevetassa attho.|| ||

Evaṃ ca naṃ dhāreyyāthāti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Attamanā te bhikkhū Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ “abhinandun” ti.|| ||
