Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthīyaṃ viharati Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno.|| ||

Atha kho Anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati aññataraṃ purisaṃ āmantesi:||
‘ehi tvaṃ amho purisa,||
yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkama,||
upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena Bhagavato pāde sirasā vandāhi.|| ||

‘Anāthapiṇḍiko bhante,||
gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno.|| ||

‘So Bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ ti.|| ||

Yena c’āyasmā Sāriputto ten’upasaṅkama,||
upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena āyasmato Sāriputtassa pāde sirasā vandāhi ‘Anāthapiṇḍiko bhante,||
gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno.|| ||

So āyasmato Sāriputtassa pāde sirasā vandatī’ ti.|| ||

Evañ ca vadehi:||
‘sādhu kira bhante,||
āyasmā Sāriputto yena Anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa nivesanaṃ ten’upasaṅkamatu anukampaṃ upādāyā’ ti.|| ||

‘Evaṃ bhante’ti kho so puriso Anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa paṭi-s-sutvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho so puriso Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:||
‘Anāthapiṇḍiko bhante,||
gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno,||
so Bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ ti.|| ||

Yena c’āyasmā Sāriputto ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Sāriputtaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho so puriso āyasmantaṃ Sāriputtaṃ etad avoca:||
‘Anāthapiṇḍiko bhante,||
gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno,||
so āyasmato Sāriputtassa pāde sirasā vandati.|| ||

Evañ ca vadeti:||
sādhu kira bhante,||
āyasmā Sāriputto yena Anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa nivesanaṃ ten’upasaṅkamatu anukampaṃ upādāyā’ ti.|| ||

Adhivāsesi kho āyasmā Sāriputto tuṇhī-bhāvena.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā Sāriputto nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya āyasmatā Ānandena pacchā-samaṇena yena Anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa nivesanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā [259] paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Nisajja kho āyasmā Sāriputto Anāthapiṇḍikaṃ gahapatiṃ etad avoca:||
‘kacci te gahapati,||
khamanīyaṃ kacci te dukkhā vedanā paṭi-k-kamanti,||
no abhi-k-kamanti,||
paṭikkamosānaṃ paññāyanti no abhi-k-kamo’ ti.|| ||

Na me bhante Sāriputta khamanīyaṃ,||
na yāpanīyaṃ,bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā.|| ||

Abhikkhamanti no paṭi-k-kamanti.|| ||

Abhi-k-kam’osānaṃ paññāyati no paṭikkamo’ ti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante Sāriputta,||
balavā puriso tiṇhena sikharena muddhani abhimantheyya,||
evam eva kho bhante Sāriputta,||
adhimattā vātā muddhani ūhananti.|| ||

Na me bhante Sāriputta,||
khamanīyaṃ,||
na yāpanīyaṃ,||
bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhi-k-kamanti no paṭi-k-kamanti.|| ||

Abhi-k-kam’osānaṃ paññāyati no paṭikkamoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante Sāriputta,||
balavā puriso daḷhena varatta-bandhena1 sīse sīsa-veṭhanaṃ2 dadeyya,||
evam eva kho me bhante Sāriputta,||
adhimattā vātā sīsaṃ parikantanti.|| ||

Na me bhante Sāriputta,||
khamanīyaṃ na yāpanīyaṃ,||
ba’hā me dukkhā vedanā abhi-k-kamanti no paṭi-k-kamanti.|| ||

Abhi-k-kam’osānaṃ paññāyati,||
no paṭikkamoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante Sāriputta,||
dakkho go-ghātako vā go-ghātakantevāsī vā tiṇhena govikantanena kucchiṃ parikanteyya,||
evam eva kho me bhante Sāriputta,||
adhimattā vātā kucchiṃ parikantanti.|| ||

Na me bhante Sāriputta,||
khamanīyaṃ na yāpanīyaṃ,||
ba’hā me dukkhā vedanā abhi-k-kamanti no paṭi-k-kamanti.|| ||

Abhi-k-kam’osānaṃ paññāyati no paṭikkamoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante Sāriputta,||
dve balavanto purisā dubbalataraṃ purisaṃ nānā bāhāsu gahetvā aṅg’ārakāsuyā santāpeyyuṃ samparitāpyeṃ,||
evam eva kho me bhante Sāriputta,||
adhimatto kāyasmiṃ ḍāho.|| ||

Na me bhante Sāriputta,||
khamanīyaṃ na yāpanīyaṃ bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhi-k-kamanti no paṭi-k-kamanti,||
abhi-k-kam’osānaṃ paññāyati no paṭikkamoti.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na cakkhuṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me cakkhunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na sotaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me sotanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na ghānaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me ghānanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na jivhaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me jivhanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na kāyaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me kāyanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na manaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me manonissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhītabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||
‘na rūpaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me rūpanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na saddaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me saddanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhītabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||
‘na gandhaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me gandhanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na rasaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me rasanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhītabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||
‘na phoṭṭhabbaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me phoṭṭhabbanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na dhammaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me dhammanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhītabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||
‘na cakkhu viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me cakkhu-viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na sota-viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me sota-viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||
‘na ghāna-viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me ghāna-viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na jivhā-viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me jivhā-viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||
‘na kāya-viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me kāya-viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na mano-viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me mano viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na cakkhu-samphassaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me cakkhu-samphassanissitaṃ [260] viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
‘na sota-samphassaṃ upādiyissāmī.|| ||

Na ca me sota-samphassanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhītabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||

Na ca me sota-samphassajavedanānissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabba:||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na āpo-dhātuṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me āpo-dhātunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na tejo-dhātuṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me tejo-dhātunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na vāyedhātuṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me vayodhātunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na ākāsa-dhātuṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me ākāsa-dhātunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na viññāṇadhātuṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me viññāṇadhātunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ na rūpaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me rūpanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na vedanaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me vedanānissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na saññaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me saññānissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na saṅkhāre upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me saṅkhāranissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me Ākāsanañ-c’āyatananissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi,||
na ca me Viññāṇañ-c’āyatananissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na Ākiñcaññ’āyatanaṃ [261] upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me

Ākiñ caññ’āyatananissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatananissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na idha lokaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me idha lokanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha te gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
na paralokaṃ upādiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me paralokanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Tasmātiha gahapati,||
evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ:||
yampidaṃ1 diṭṭhaṃ sutaṃ mutaṃ viññātaṃ pattaṃ pariyesitaṃ anuvicaritaṃ3 manasā.|| ||

Tampi na upadiyissāmi.|| ||

Na ca me tannissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ hi te gahapati,||
sikkhitabban ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati parodi,||
assūni pavattesi.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā Ānando,||
Anāthapiṇḍikaṃ gahapatiṃ etad avoca:||
olīyasi kho tvaṃ gahapati,||
saṃsīdasi.|| ||

Kho tvaṃ gahapatī’ ti.|| ||

Nāhaṃ bhante Ānanda,||
oliyyāmi,||
na pi saṃsīdāmi.|| ||

Api ca me dīgha-rattaṃ Satthā payirupāsito,||
mano-bhāvanīyā ca bhikkhu na ca me eva-rūpī dhammī kathā suta-pubbā’ ti.|| ||

Na kho gahapati,||
gihīnaṃ odāta-vasanānaṃ eva-rūpī dhammī kathā paṭibhāti.|| ||

Pabbajitānaṃ kho gahapati,||
eva-rūpī dhammī kathā paṭibhātī’ ti.|| ||

Tena hi bhante Sāriputta,gihīnaṃ odāta-vasanānaṃ eva-rūpī dhammī kathā paṭibhātu.|| ||

Santi hi bhante Sāriputta,||
kula-puttā apparajakkhajātikā,||
assavaṇatā Dhammassa parihāyanti.|| ||

Bhavissanti Dhammassa aññātāro’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā ca Sāriputto āyasmā ca Ānando,||
Anāthapiṇḍikaṃ gahapatiṃ iminā ovādena ovaditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā pakkamiṃsu.|| ||

Atha kho Anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati,||
acira-pakkante āyasmante ca Sāriputte āyasmante ca [262] Ānande kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā Tusitaṃ kāyaṃ upapajji6.|| ||

Atha kho Anāthapiṇḍiko deva-putto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkanta-vaṇṇo kevala-kappaṃ Jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho Anāthapiṇḍiko deva-putto Bhagavantaṃ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:|| ||

“Idaṃ hi taṃ Jetavanaṃ isiSaṅghanisevitaṃ,||
Āvutthaṃ dhamma-rājena pītisañjananaṃ mama.|| ||

Kammaṃ vijjā ca dhammo ca silaṃ jīvitamuttamaṃ,||
Etena maccā sujjhanti na gottena dhanena vā.|| ||

Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso sampassaṃ atthamattano,||
Yoniso vicine dhammaṃ evaṃ tattha visujjhati.|| ||

Sāriputtova paññāya sīlena upasamena ca,||
Yo hi pāragato bhikkhu etāva paramo siyā” ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Anāthapiṇḍiko deva-putto,||
samanuñño Satthā ahosi.|| ||

Atha kho Anāthapiṇḍiko deva-putto samanuñño me Satthāti Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā tatth’evantara-dhāyi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhu āmantesi:||
imaṃ bhikkhave rattiṃ aññataro deva-putto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkanta-vaṇṇo kevala-kappaṃ Jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yenāhaṃ ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā maṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho bhikkhave,||
so deva-putto maṃ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:|| ||

Samanuñño me Satthāti maṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā tatth’evantara-dhāyī’ ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte āyasmā Ānando Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:||
‘so hi nūna so bhante,||
Anāthapiṇḍiko deva-putto bhavissati,||
Anāthapiṇḍiko bhante,||
gahapati āyasmante Sāriputte abhi-p-pasanno ahosī ti.|| ||

Sādhu sādhu, Ānanda,||
yāvatakaṃ kho Ānanda,||
takkāya pattabbaṃ,||
anuppattaṃ tayā.|| ||

Anāthapiṇḍiko so Ānanda,||
deva-putto nāñño ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Attamano āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ ‘abhinandī’ ti.|| ||
