Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Vesāliyaṃ viharati Mahāvane Kūṭāgāra-sālāyaṃ.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Vesāliyaṃ paṭivasanti kenacid’eva karaṇīyena.|| ||

Assosuṃ kho te Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā:|| ||

“Samaṇo khalu bho Gotamo Sakya-putto Sakya-kulā pabba-jito Vesāliyaṃ viharati Kūṭāgāra-sālāyaṃ.|| ||

Taṃ kho pana Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kitti-saddo abbhu-g-gato:|| ||

‘Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathī Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā’ ti.|| ||

So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti ādi-kalyāṇaṃ majjhe kalyāṇaṃ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ savyañ janaṃ.|| ||

Kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Sādhu kho pana tathā-rūpānaṃ arahataṃ dassanaṃ hotī” ti.|| ||

Atha kho te Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā yena Mahāvanaṃ Kūṭāgāra-sālaṃ ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayen’āyasmā Nāgito Bhagavato upaṭṭhāko hoti.|| ||

Atha kho te Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā yen’āyasmā Nāgito ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Nāgitaṃ etad avocuṃ:|| ||

“Kahaṃ nu kho bho Nāgita,|| etarahi so bhavaṃ Gotamo viharati?|| ||

Dassana-kāmā hi mayaṃ taṃ bhavantaṃ Gotaman ti?”|| ||

[151] “Akālo kho āvuso Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya,|| paṭisallīno Bhagavā” ti.|| ||

Atha kho te Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā tatth’eva eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu:|| ||

“Disvā va mayaṃ taṃ Bhagavantaṃ Gotamaṃ gamissāmā” ti.|| ||

Oṭṭhaddho pi Licchavī mahatiyā Licchavi-parisāya saddhiṃ yena Mahāvanaṃ Kūṭāgāra-sālaṃ yen’āyasmā Nāgito ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Nāgitaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho Oṭṭhaddho Licchavī āyasmantaṃ Nāgitaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Kahaṃ nu kho bhante Nāgita,|| etarahi so Bhagavā viharati arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho,|| dassana-kāmā hi mayaṃ taṃ Bhagavantaṃ Arahantaṃ Sammā-sam-Buddhan? ti.”|| ||

“Akālo kho Mahāli Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya,|| paṭisallīno Bhagavā” ti.|| ||

Oṭṭhaddho pi Licchavī tatth’eva eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi:|| ||

“Disvā v’ahaṃ taṃ Bhagavantaṃ gamissāmi Arahantaṃ Sammā-sam-Buddhan ti.”|| ||

Atha kho Sīho samaṇ’uddeso yen’āyasmā Nāgito ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Nāgitaṃ abhivādetvā ekamnataṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho Sīho samaṇ’uddeso āyasmantaṃ Nāgitaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Ete bhante Kassapa,|| sambahulā Kosalakā ca buhmaṇadūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā idh’ūpasaṅkantā Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||

Oṭṭhaddho pi Licchavi mahatiyā Licchavi-parisāya saddhiṃ idh’ūpasaṅkanto Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||

Sādhu bhante Kassapa labhataṃ esā janatā dassanāyā’ ti.|| ||

‘Tena hi Sīha, tvaṃ yeva Bhagavato ārocehī’ ti.|| ||

‘Evaṃ bhante’ ti kho Sīho samaṇ’uddeso āyasmato Nāgitassa paṭi-s-sutvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami,|| upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho Sīho samaṇ’uddeso Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Ete bhante sambahulā Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā idh’ūpasaṅkantā Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||

Oṭṭhaddho pi Licchavī mahatiyā [152] Licchavi-parisāya saddhiṃ idh’ūpasaṅkanto Bhagavantaṃ dassanāya.|| ||

Sādhu bhante labhataṃ esā janatā Bhagavantaṃ dassanāyā” ti.|| ||

“Tena hi Sīha vihāra-pacchāyāyaṃ āsanaṃ paññāpehī” ti.|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho Sīho samaṇ’uddeso Bhagavato paṭi-s-sutvā vihāra-pacchāyāyaṃ āsanaṃ paññāpesi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā vihārā ni-k-khamma vihāra-pacchāyāyaṃ paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Atha kho te Kosalakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā Māgadhakā ca brāhmaṇa-dūtā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu.|| ||

Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Oṭṭhaddho pi Licchavī mahatiyā Licchavi-parisāya saddhiṃ yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Oṭṭhaddho Licchavī Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Purimāni bhante divasāni purimatarāni Sunakkhatto Licchavi-putto yenāhaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā maṃ etad avoca:|| ||

‘Yad agge ahaṃ Mahāli,|| Bhagavantaṃ upanissāya viharissāmi na ciraṃ tīṇi vassāni,|| dibbāni hi kho rūpāni passāmi piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

No ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāmi piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni’ ti.|| ||

Santān’eva nu kho bhante Sunakkhatto Licchavi-putto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no udāhu asantānī” ti?|| ||

“Santān’eva kho Mahāli Sunakkhatto Licchavi-putto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni no asantānī” ti.|| ||

“Ko nu kho bhante hetu ko paccayo,|| yena santān’eva Sunakkhatto Licchavi-putto|| dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni no asantānī” ti?|| ||

[153] “Idha Mahāli bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibabānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Puratthimāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli hoti bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

§

Puna ca paraṃ Mahāli bhikkhuno dakkhiṇāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So dakkhiṇāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Dakkhiṇāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli hoti bhikkhuno dakkhiṇāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ Mahāli bhikkhuno pacchi-māya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So pacchi-māya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Pacchimāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli hoti bhikkhuno pacchi-māya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ Mahāli bhikkhuno uttarāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So uttarāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Uttarāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli hoti bhikkhuno uttarāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Uddham-adho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So uddham-adho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ|| ||

Uddham-adho tiriyaṃ dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli bhikkhuno uddham adho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So puratthimāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Puratthimāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

So dakkhiṇāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Dakkhiṇāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli hoti bhikkhuno dakkhiṇāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Pacchimāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

So uttarāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Uttarāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Evaṃ h’etaṃ Mahāli hoti bhikkhuno uttarāya disāya ekaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Uddham-adho tiriyaṃ ekaṃsa-bhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṃ rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| no ca kho dibbānaṃ saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So uttarāya disāya ubhayaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānañ ca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| dibbānañ ca saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Uttarāya disāya dibbāni ca rūpāni passati piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni,|| dibbāni ca saddāni suṇāti piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni.|| ||

Uddham-adho tiriyaṃ ubhayaṃsa-bhāvite samādhi hoti dibbānañ ca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| dibbānañ ca saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

So uddham-adho tiriyaṃ ubhayaṃsa-bhāvite samādhimhi dibbānañ ca rūpānaṃ dassanāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ,|| dibbānañ ca saddānaṃ savaṇāya piya-rūpānaṃ kām’ūpasaṃ-hitānaṃ rajanīyānaṃ.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho Mahāli hetu ayaṃ paccayo,|| yena santān’eva Sunakkhatto Licchavi-putto dibbāni saddāni nāssosi piya-rūpāni kām’ūpasaṃ-hitāni rajanīyāni no asantānī” ti.|| ||

“Etāsaṃ nūna bhante samādhi-bhāvanānaṃ sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhu Bhagavati Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī” ti?|| ||

Na kho Mahāli,|| etāsaṃ samādhi-bhāvanānaṃ sacchi-kiriyā-hetū [156] bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Atthi kho Mahāli,|| aññe ca dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca yesaṃ sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī ti.|| ||

Katame pana te bhante dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca,|| yesaṃ sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhū Bhagavati Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī ti?|| ||

Idha Mahāli,|| bhikkhū tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā Sot’āpanno hoti avinipāta-dhammo niyato sambodhi-parāyaṇo.|| ||

Ayaṃ pi kho Mahāli,|| dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca yassa sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ Mahāli,|| bhikkhū tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā rāga-dosa-mohānaṃ tanuttā Sakad’āgāmī hoti sakid eva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhass’antaṃ karoti.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Mahāli,|| dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca yassa sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhu mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ Mahāli,|| bhikkhu ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā opapātiko hoti tattha parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Mahāli,|| dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca yassa sacchi-kiriyā-hetu mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ Mahāli,|| bhikkhu āsavānaṃ khayā|| anāsavaṃ|| ceto-vimuttiṃ|| paññā-vimuttiṃ|| diṭṭhe’va dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho Mahāli,|| dhammo uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca yassa sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhu mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ caranti.|| ||

Ime kho te Mahāli dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca yesaṃ sacchi-kiriyā-hetu bhikkhū mayi Brahma-cariyaṃ carantī” ti.|| ||

“Atthi pana bhante Maggo,|| atthi paṭipadā|| etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāyā” ti?|| ||

“Atthi kho Mahāli,|| atthi paṭipadā,|| etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāyā” ti.|| ||

[157] “Katamo pana bhante Maggo,|| katamā paṭipadā,|| etesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāyā” ti?|| ||

“Ayam eva Ariyo Aṭṭhaṅgiko Maggo,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Sammā diṭṭhi|| sammā saṅkappo|| sammā vācā|| sammā kammanto|| sammā ājīvo|| sammā vāyāmo|| sammā sati|| sammā samādhi.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho Mahāli Maggo ayaṃ paṭipadā,|| etesaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya.|| ||

Ekaṃ idāhaṃ Mahāli samayaṃ Kosambīyaṃ viharāmi Ghositārāme.|| ||

Atha kho dve pabba-jitā Maṇḍisso ca paribbājako Jāliyo ca dārupattik-antevāsī yenāhaṃ ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā mama saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu,|| sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhitā kho te dve pabba-jitā maṃ etad avocuṃ.|| ||

“Kin nu kho āvuso bho Gotama,|| taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīraṃ udāhu|| aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran” ti?|| ||

“Tena h’āvuso suṇātha sādhukaṃ manasi-karotha bhāsissāmī” ti.|| ||

“Evam āvuso” ti kho te dve pabba-jitā mama paccassosuṃ c’ahaṃ etad avocaṃ:

Idh’āvuso Tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaṃ Sammā Sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno Sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisa-damma-sārathī Satthā deva-manussānaṃ Buddho Bhagavā.|| ||

So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti ādi kalyāṇaṃ majjhe kalyāṇaṃ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ savyañ janaṃ,|| kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto.|| ||

So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā Tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati.|| ||

So tena saddhā-paṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Sambādho gharāvāso rajo-patho,|| abbhokāso pabbajjā.|| ||

Na-y-idaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekanta-paripuṇṇaṃ ekanta-parisuddhaṃ saṅkha-likhitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ carituṃ.|| ||

Yan nūn-ā-haṃ kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyan’ ti.|| ||

So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya,|| appaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya,|| kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno Pātimokkha-saṃvarat-saṃvuto viharati ācāra-gocara-sampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhaya-dassāvī.|| ||

Samādāya sikkhati sikkhā-padesu kāya-kamma-vacī-kammena samannāgato kusalena.|| ||

Parisuddhā-jīvo sīla-sampanno indriyesu gutta-dvāro bhojane matt’aññū sati-sampajaññena samannāgato santuṭṭho.|| ||

Kathañ ca āvuso bhikkhu sīla-sampanno hoti?|| ||

Idha bhikkhu pāṇ-ā-tipātaṃ pahāya pāṇ-ā-tipātā paṭivirato hoti,|| nihita-daṇḍo nihita-sattho lajjī dayā-panno,|| sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī viharati.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Adinn’ādānaṃ pahāya adinn’ādānā paṭivirato hoti dinn’ādāyī dinna-pāṭikaṅkhī,|| athenena suci-bhūtena attanā virahati.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmi.|| ||

Abrahma-cariyaṃ pahāya brahma-cārī hoti ārā-cārī virato methunā gāma-dhammā.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Musā-vādaṃ pahāya musā-vādā paṭivirato hoti sacca-vādī sacca-sandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Pisuṇa-vācaṃ pahāya pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,|| ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya,|| amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya.|| ||

Iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā,|| sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā samagg’ārāmo samagga-rato samagga-nandī samagga-karaṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Pharusaṃ-vācaṃ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Yā sā vācā neḷā kaṇṇa-sukhā pemanīyā hadayaṃ-gamā porī bahu-jana-kantā bahujāna-manāpā,|| tathā-rūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Sampha-p-palāpaṃ pahāya sampha-p-palāpā paṭivirato hoti kāla-vādī bhūta-vādī attha-vādī dhamma-vādī vinaya-vādī,|| nidhāna-vatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyanta-vatiṃ attha-sañhitaṃ.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Bīja-gāma-bhūta-gāma-samārambhā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Eka-bhatatiko hoti ratt’ūparato,|| virato vikāla-bhojanā.|| ||

Nacca-gīta-vādita-visūka-dassanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Mālā-gandha-vilepana-dhāraṇa-maṇḍana-vibhusana-ṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Uccā-sayana-mahā-sayanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Jātarūpa-rajata-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmaka-dañña-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmaka-maṃsa-paṭigaggahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Itthi-kumārika-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dāsi-dāsa-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Aj-eḷaka-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kukkuṭa-sūkara-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Hatthi-gavassa-vaḷavā-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Khetta-vatthu-paṭi-g-gahaṇā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dūteyya-paheṇa-gaman-ā-nuyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kaya-vikkayā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Tulā-kūṭa-kaṃsa-kūṭa-māna-kūṭā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ukkoṭana-vañcana-nikati-sāci-yogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Chedana-vadha-bandhana-viparāmosa-ālopa-sahasākarā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ bījagāma-bhūta-gāma-samārambhaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Mūla-bījaṃ,|| khandha-bījaṃ,|| phalu-bījaṃ,|| agga-bījaṃ,|| bija-bījam eva pañcamaṃ.|| ||

Iti eva-rūpā bījagāma-bhūta-gāma-samārambhā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ sannidhi-kāra-paribhogaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Anna-sannidhiṃ,|| pāna-sannidhiṃ,|| vattha-sannidhiṃ,|| yāna-sannidhiṃ,|| sayana-sannidhiṃ,|| gandha-sannidhiṃ,|| āmisa-sannidhiṃ.|| ||

Iti vā iti eva-rūpā sannidhi-kāra-paribhogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlassamiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ visukadassanaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Naccaṃ, gītaṃ, vāditaṃ, pekkhaṃ, akkhātaṃ, pāṇissaraṃ, vetālaṃ, kumbha-thūnaṃ, Sobha-nagarakaṃ, caṇḍālaṃ, vaṃsaṃ, dhopanaṃ, hatthi-yuddhaṃ, assa-yuddhaṃ, mahisa-yuddhaṃ, usabha-yuddhaṃ, aja-yuddhaṃ, meṇḍa-yuddhaṃ, kukkuṭa-yuddhaṃ, vaṭṭaka-yuddhaṃ, daṇḍa-yuddhaṃ, muṭṭhi-yuddhaṃ, nibbuddhaṃ uyyodhikaṃ balaggaṃ senā-byūhaṃ aṇīka-dassanaṃ.|| ||

Iti vā iti eva-rūpā visūka-dassanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ jūta-ppamāda-ṭ-ṭhān’ānuyogaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Aṭṭha-padaṃ dasa-padaṃ ākāsaṃ parihāra-pathaṃ sannikaṃ khalikaṃ ghaṭikaṃ salāka-hatthaṃ akkhaṃ paṅgacīraṃ vaṅkakaṃ mokkha-cikaṃ ciṅgulikaṃ pattāḷhakaṃ rathakaṃ dhanukaṃ akkharikaṃ manesikaṃ yathā-vajjaṃ.|| ||

Iti vā iti eva-rūpā jūta-ppamāda-ṭ-ṭhān’ānuyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ uccā-sayana-mahā-sayanaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Āsandiṃ pallaṅkaṃ gonakaṃ cittakaṃ paṭikaṃ paṭalikaṃ tūlikaṃ vikatikaṃ udda-lomiṃ ekanta-lomiṃ kaṭṭhissaṃ koseyyaṃ kuttakaṃ hatth’attharaṃ ass’attharaṃ rath’attharaṃ ajinap-paveṇiṃ kādali-miga-pavara-paccattharaṇaṃ sa-uttara-c-chadaṃ ubhato-lohita-kūpadhānaṃ.|| ||

Iti vā iti eva-rūpā uccā-sayana-mahā-sayanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāti bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ maṇḍana-vibhusana-ṭ-ṭhān’ānuyogaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Ucchādanaṃ parimaddanaṃ nahāpanaṃ sambāhanaṃ ādāsaṃ añjanaṃ mālā-vilepanaṃ mukkha-cuṇṇakaṃ mukhale-panaṃ hattha-bandhaṃ sikhā-bandhaṃ daṇḍakaṃ nāḷikaṃ khaggaṃ chattaṃ citrūpāhanaṃ uṇahīsaṃ maṇiṃ vāla-vījaniṃ odātāni vatthāni dīgha-dasāni.|| ||

Iti vā iti eva-rūpā maṇḍana-vibhusana-ṭ-ṭhān’ānuyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Idam pi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.|| ||

Yathā vā pan’eke bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saddhā-deyyāti bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te eva-rūpaṃ tiracchāna-kathaṃ anuyuttā viharanti,|| seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso khattiyo muddhā-vasitto nihata-paccāmitto na kuto ci bhayaṃ samanupassati yad idaṃ pacca-t-thikato,|| evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ sīla-sampanno na kuto ci bhayaṃ samanupassati yad idaṃ sīla-saṃvaratto.|| ||

So iminā ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajja-sukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

Kathañ ca āvuso bhikkhu indriyesu gutta-dvāro hoti?|| ||

Idha āvuso bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī.|| ||

Yatvādhi-karaṇam enaṃ cakkhu’ndriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,|| rakkhati cakkhu’ndriyaṃ cakkhu’ndriye saṃvaratṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī.|| ||

Yatvādhi-karaṇam enaṃ sot’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,|| rakkhati sot’indriyaṃ sotendriye saṃvaratṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Ghāṇena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī.|| ||

Yatvādhi-karaṇam enaṃ ghān’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,|| rakkhati ghān’indriyaṃ ghān’indriye saṃvaratṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī.|| ||

Yatvādhi-karaṇam enaṃ jivh’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,|| rakkhati jivh’indriyaṃ jivh’indriya saṃvaratṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phusitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī.|| ||

Yatvādhi-karaṇam enaṃ kāy’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,|| rakkhati kāy’indriyaṃ kāy’indriye saṃvaratṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī.|| ||

Yatvādhi-karaṇam enaṃ man’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā-domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,|| rakkhati man’indriyaṃ man’indriye saṃvaratṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso pakkhī sakuṇo yena yen’eva ḍeti sa-patta-bhāro va ḍeti,|| evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihāriyena cīvarena kucchi-parihāriyena piṇḍ-apātena,|| so yena yen’eva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati.|| ||

Evaṃ kho āvuso bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti.|| ||

So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya vigat-ā-bhijjhena cetasā viharati,|| abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vyāpāda-padosaṃ pahāya avyāpanna-citto viharati,|| sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hitānukampi,|| vyāpāda-padosā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Thina-middhaṃ pahāya vigata-thina-middho viharati,|| āloka-saññī sato sampajāno,|| thina-middhā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccaṃ pahāya anuddhato viharati,|| ajjhattaṃ vūpasanna-citto,|| uddhacca-kukkuccā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vici-kicchaṃ pahāya tiṇṇa-vici-kiccho viharati,|| akathaṃ-kathī kusalesu dhammesu,|| vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojeyya,|| tassa te kammantā samijjheyyuṃ,|| so yāni ca porāṇāni iṇa-mūlāni tāni ca vyantī-kareyya,|| siyā c’assa uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāya.|| ||

Tassa evam assa:|| ||

“Ahaṃ kho pubbe iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojesiṃ.|| ||

Tassa me te kammantā samijjhiṃsu.|| ||

So’haṃ yāni ca poraṇāni iṇa-mūlāni tāni ca vyanti akāsiṃ,|| atthi ca me uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāyā” ti.|| ||

So tato-nidānaṃ labhetha pāmujjaṃ,|| adhigacche somanassaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso ābādhiko assa dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno,|| bhattaṃ c’assa na c-chādeyya,|| na c’assa kāye balamattā.|| ||

So aparena samayena tamhā ābādhā mucceyya,|| bhattañ c’assa chādeyya,|| siyā c’assa kāye balamattā.|| ||

Tassa evam assa:|| ||

“Ahaṃ kho pubbe ābādhiko ahosiṃ dukkhito bāḷha-gilāno,|| bhattaṃ ca me na cchādesi,|| na ca me āsi kāye balamattā.|| ||

So’mhi etarahi tamhā ābādhā mutto bhattañ ca me chādeti.|| ||

Atthi ca kāye balamattā” ti.|| ||

So tato-nidānaṃ labhetha pāmujjaṃ,|| adhigacche somanassaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso bandhanāgāre baddho assa.|| ||

So aparena samayena tamhā bandhanā mucceyya sotthinā avyayena,|| na c’assa kiñ ci bhogānaṃ vayo.|| ||

“Ahaṃ kho pubbe bandhanāgāre baddho ahosiṃ,|| so’mhi etarahi tamhā bandhanā mutto sotthinā avyayena,|| n’atthi ca me kiñ ci bhogānaṃ vayo” ti.|| ||

So tato-nidānaṃ labhetha pāmujjaṃ,|| adhigacche somanassaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso dāso assa anattadhīno parādhīno na yena kāmaṅ gamo,|| so aparena samayena tamhā dāsavyā mucceyya attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yena kāmaṅ gamo.|| ||

Tassa evam assa:|| ||

“Ahaṃ kho pubbe dāso ahosiṃ anattādhīno parādhīno na yena kāmaṅ gamo,|| so’mhi etarahi tamhā dāsavyā mutto attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yena kāmaṅ gamo” ti.|| ||

So tato-nidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ,|| adhigacche somanassaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhāna-maggaṃ paṭipajjeyya dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭi-bhayaṃ.|| ||

So aparena samayena taṃ kantāraṃ nitthareyya,|| sotthinā gāmantaṃ anupāpuṇeyya khemaṃ appaṭibhayaṃ.|| ||

Tassa evam assa:|| ||

“Ahaṃ kho pubbe sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhāna-maggaṃ paṭipajjiṃ dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭi-bhayaṃ.|| ||

So’mhi etarahi taṃ kantāraṃ nitthiṇṇo,|| sotthinā gāmantaṃ anuppatto khemaṃ appaṭibhayan” ti.|| ||

So tato-nidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ adhigacche somanassaṃ.|| ||

Evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu,|| yathā iṇaṃ,|| yathā rogaṃ,|| yathā bandhanāgāraṃ,|| yathā dāsavyaṃ,|| yathā kantāraddhāna-maggaṃ,|| ime pañca nīvaraṇe appahīṇe attani samanupassati.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso ānaṇyaṃ,|| yathā ārogyaṃ,|| yathā bandhanā mokkhaṃ,|| yathā bhujissaṃ|| yathā khemanta-bhūmiṃ|| evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu|| ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassati.|| ||

Tass’ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassato pāmojjaṃ jāyati,|| pamuditassa pīti jāyati,|| pīti-manassa kāyo passambhati,|| pa-s-saddha-kāyo sukhaṃ vedeti,|| sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati.|| ||

§

So vivicc’eva kāmehi|| vivicca akusalehi dhammehi|| sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ|| viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ|| paṭhama-j-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So imam eva kāyaṃ viveka-jena pīti-sukhena|| abhisandeti|| parisandeti|| paripūreti|| parippharati,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa viveka-jena pīti-sukhena apphutaṃ hoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso dakkho nahāpako vā nahāpakantevāsī vā kaṃsa-thāle nahānīya-cuṇṇāni ākiritvā udakena paripphosakaṃ paripphosakaṃ sanneyya,|| sā’ssa nahānīya-piṇḍi|| sinehānugatā|| sineha-paretā|| santara-bāhirā phuṭā sinehena|| na ca paggharaṇīi; evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu imam eva kāyaṃ viveka-jena pīti-sukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti parippharati.|| ||

N’āssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa viveka-jena pīti-sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti.|| ||

Yo nu kho āvuso bhikkhu|| evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ nu kho tass’etaṃ vacanāya:|| ||

“‘Taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran’ ti vā|| ‘aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran’ ti vā?” ti?|| ||

Yo so āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ tass’etaṃ vacanāya:|| ||

“‘Taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran’ ti vā|| ‘aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran’ ti vā” ti?|| ||

Ahaṃ kho pan’etaṃ āvuso|| evaṃ jānāmi evaṃ passāmi.|| ||

Atha ca panāhaṃ na vadāmi:|| “‘taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran’ ti vā|| ‘aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran’ ti vā” ti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso bhikkhu vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā|| ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ|| cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ|| avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ|| samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ|| dutiya-j-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So imam eva kāyaṃ samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhena|| abhisandeti|| parisandeti|| paripūreti|| parippharati,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhena apphutaṃ hoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso udaka-rahado ubbhidodako,|| tassa nev’assa puratthimāya disāya udakassa āya-mukhaṃ,|| na dakkhiṇāya disāya udakassa āya-mukhaṃ,|| na pacchi-māya disāya udakassa āya-mukhaṃ,|| na uttarāya disāya udakassa āya-mukhaṃ,|| devo ca na kālena kālaṃ sammā dhāraṃ anupaveccheyya,|| atha kho tamhā ca udaka-rahadā sītā vāridhārā ubbhijjitvā tam eva udaka-rahadaṃ sītena vārinā abhisandeyya parisandeyya paripūreyya paripphareyya,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato udaka-rahadassa vārinā sītena apphuṭaṃ assa-

Evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu imam eva kāyaṃ samādhijena pīti-sukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti parippharati.|| ||

Nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa samādhijena pīti-sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti.

Yo nu kho āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ nu kho tass’etaṃ vacanāya taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā ti?|| ||

Yo so āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ tass’etaṃ vacanāya taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā ti.|| ||

Ahaṃ kho pan’etaṃ āvuso evaṃ jānāmi evaṃ passāmi.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā|| upekkhako ca viharati|| sato sampajāno|| sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti|| yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:|| ||

‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti||

tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So imam eva kāyaṃ nippītikena-sukhena|| abhisandeti|| parisandeti|| paripūreti|| parippharati,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphutaṃ hoti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso|| uppaliniyaṃ vā paduminiyaṃ vā puṇḍarīkiniyaṃ vā|| appekaccāni uppalāni vā padumāni vā puṇḍarīkāni vā|| udake jātāni|| udake saṃvyūḷhāni|| udakānuggatāni|| anto-nimuggā-posīni tāni yāva caggā yāva ca mūlā|| sītena vārinā abhisannāni, parisannāni, paripūrāni, paripphuṭāni|| nāssā kiñci sabbā-vataṃ|| uppalānaṃ vā padumānaṃ vā puṇḍarīkānaṃ vā|| sītena vārinā apphuṭaṃ assa.

Evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu imam eva kāyaṃ nippītikena sukhena|| abhisandeti|| parisandeti|| paripūreti|| parippharati|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti.

Yo nu kho āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ nu kho tass’etaṃ vacanāya taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā ti?|| ||

Yo so āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ tass’etaṃ vacanāya taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā ti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhu āvuso bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā|| dukkhassa ca pahānā|| pubb’eva somanassa-domanassānaṃ attha-gamā|| adukkha-m-asukhaṃ|| upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ|| [158] catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So imam eva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti.

Seyyathā pi āvuso puriso odātena vatthena sasīsaṃ pārupitvā nisinno assa,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa odātena vatthena apphuṭaṃ assa.|| ||

Evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu imam’eva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti,|| nāssa kiñci sabbā-vato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti.

Yo nu kho āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ nu kho tass’etaṃ vacanāya taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā ti?|| ||

Yo so āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ jānāti evaṃ passati,|| kallaṃ tass’etaṃ vacanāya taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā ti.|| ||

Ahaṃ kho pan’etaṃ āvuso evaṃ jānāmi evaṃ passāmi.|| ||

Atha ca panāhaṃ na vadāmi taṃ jīvaṃ taṃ sarīran ti vā aññaṃ jīvaṃ aññaṃ sarīran ti vā.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigatupakkilese mudu-bhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte|| ñāṇa-dassanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So evaṃ pajānāti:|| ||

“Ayaṃ kho me kāyo rūpī cātum-mahā-bhūtiko mātā-pettika-sambhavo odana-kummāsūpacayo anicc-ucchādana-parimaddana-bhedana-viddhaṃsana-dhammo.|| ||

Idaṃ ca pana me viññāṇaṃ ettha sitaṃ ettha paṭibaddhan’ ti.|| ||

Evam eva kho āvuso bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigat’ūpakkilese mudu-bhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte āsavānaṃ khaya-ñāṇāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So ‘idaṃ dukkhan’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ayaṃ dukkha-samudayo’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ayaṃ dukkha-nirodho’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ayaṃ dukkha-nirodh-agāminī paṭipadā’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ime āsavā’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ayaṃ āsavā-samudayo’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ayaṃ āsava-nirodho’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

‘Ayaṃ āsava-nirodha-gāminī paṭipadā’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||

Tassa evaṃ jānato evaṃ passato kām’āsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

‘Bhav’āsavā’ pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

‘Avijj’āsavā’ pi cittaṃ vimuccati.|| ||

Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttam iti ñāṇaṃ hoti.|| ||

‘Khīṇā jāti,|| vusitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ,|| kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ,|| nāparaṃ itthattayā’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

Seyyathā pi āvuso pabbata-saṃkhepe udaka-rahado accho vi-p-pasanno anāvilo, tattha cakkhumā puriso tīre ṭtito passeyya sippi-sambukam pi sakkhara-kaṭhalam pi maccha-gumbam pi carantam pi tiṭṭhantam pi.|| ||

Tassa evam assa:|| ||

Ayaṃ kho udaka-rahado accho vi-p-pasanno anāvilo, tatr’ime sippi-sambukam pi sakkhara-kaṭhalam pi maccha-gumbam pi carantam pi tiṭṭhantam pi.|| ||

Evam eva kho āavuso bhikkhu samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte an-aṅgaṇe vigat’ūpakkilese mudu-bhūte kammaniye ṭhite ānejjappatte āsavānaṃ khaya-ñāṇāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti.|| ||

So ‘idaṃ dukkhan’ ti yathā-bhūtaṃ pajānāti.|| ||
