Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā Ānando Vesāliyaṃ viharati Beluvagāmake.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro Pāṭali-puttaṃ anuppatto hoti kenacid-eva karaṇīyena.|| ||

Atha kho Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro yena Kukkuṭārāmo yena aññataro bhikkhu ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā taṃ bhikkhuṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro taṃ bhikkhuṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Kahan nu kho bhante āyasmā Ānando etarahi viharati?|| ||

Dassana-kāmā hi mayaṃ taṃ āyasmantaṃ Ānandan” ti.|| ||

“Eso gahapati āyasmā Ānando Vesāliyaṃ viharati Beluvagāmake” ti.|| ||

Atha kho Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro Pāṭaliputte taṃ karaṇīyaṃ tīretvā yena Vesālī Beluvagāmako yen’āyasmā Ānando ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Atthi nu kho bhante Ānanda tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaṃ vā cittaṃ vimuccati,|| apari-k-khīṇā vā āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattaṃ vā anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇātī” ti?|| ||

“Atthi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| [350] yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇātī” ti.|| ||

“Katamo pana bhante Ānanda tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇātī” ti?|| ||

“Idha gahapati bhikkhu|| vivicc’eva kāmehi|| vivicca akusalehi dhammehi|| sa-vitakkaṃ|| sa-vicāraṃ|| viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ|| paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Idam pi kho paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā|| ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ|| cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ|| avitakkaṃ|| avicāraṃ|| samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ|| dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

Idam pi kho dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| [351] eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| pītiyā ca virāgā|| upekkhako ca viharati|| sato ca sampajāno sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti|| yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:|| ‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti|| taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

Idam pi kho tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| sukhassa ca pahānā|| dukkhassa ca pahānā,|| pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā|| adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ|| upekkhāsati pārisuddhiṃ|| catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

Idam pi kho catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| mettā-saha-gatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati|| tathā dutiyaṃ,|| tathā tatiyaṃ,|| tathā catutthiṃ|| iti uddham-adho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi|| sabbattatāya|| sabbā-vantaṃ lokaṃ|| mettā-saha-gatena cetasā vipulena|| mahaggatena|| appamāṇena|| averena avyāpajjhena pharitvā viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

Ayam pi kho mettā-ceto-vimutti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| karuṇā-saha-gatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati|| tathā dutiyaṃ,|| tathā tatiyaṃ,|| tathā catutthiṃ,|| iti uddham-adho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi|| sabbattatāya|| sabbā-vantaṃ lokaṃ|| karuṇā-saha-gatena cetasā vipulena|| mahaggatena|| appamāṇena|| averena avyāpajjhena pharitvā viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Ayam pi kho karuṇā-ceto-vimutti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ [352] nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| muditā-saha-gatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati|| tathā dutiyaṃ,|| tathā tatiyaṃ,|| tathā catutthiṃ iti uddham-adho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi|| sabbattatāya|| sabbā-vantaṃ lokaṃ|| muditā-saha-gatena cetasā vipulena|| mahaggatena|| appamāṇena|| averena avyāpajjhena pharitvā viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Ayam pi kho muditā-ceto-vimutti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu upekkhā-saha-gatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati|| tathā dutiyaṃ,|| tathā tatiyaṃ,|| tathā catutthiṃ iti uddham-adho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi|| sabbattatāya|| sabbā-vantaṃ lokaṃ|| upekkhā-saha-gatena cetasā vipulena|| mahaggatena|| appamāṇena|| averena avyāpajjhena pharitvā viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Ayam pi kho upekkhā-ceto-vimutti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu sabbaso rūpa-saññānaṃ samati-k-kamā|| paṭigha-saññānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā|| nānatta-saññānaṃ amanasikārā|| ‘Ananto ākāso’ ti|| Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Ayam pi kho pana Ākāsanañ-c’āyatana-samāpatti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu sabbaso Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma|| ‘Anantaṃ viññāṇan’ ti|| Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Ayam pi kho Viññāṇañ-c’āyatana samāpatti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ gahapati bhikkhu|| sabbaso Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma|| ‘N’atthi kiñcī’ ti|| Ākiñcaññ’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

So iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

‘Ayam pi kho Ākiñ caññ’āyatanasamāpatti abhisaṅkhataṃ|| abhisañcetayitaṃ,|| yaṃ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṃ abhisañcetayitaṃ|| tad aniccaṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti pajānāti.|| ||

So tattha ṭhito āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| no ce āsavānaṃ khayaṃ pāpuṇāti;|| ten’eva dhamma-rāgena tāya dhamma-nandiyā|| pañcannaṃ ora-m-bhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ pari-k-khayā|| opapātiko hoti|| tattha-parinibbāyī anāvatti-dhammo tasmā lokā.|| ||

Ayam pi kho gahapati tena Bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena|| eka-dhammo akkhāto,|| yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttañ c’eva cittaṃ vimuccati|| apari-k-khīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti|| ananuppattañ ca anuttaraṃ yoga-k-khemaṃ anupāpuṇāti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Seyyathā pi bhante Ānanda puriso ekaṃ nidhimukhaṃ gavesanto sakideva ekādasa [353] nidhimukhāni adhigaccheyya,|| evam eva kho ahaṃ bhante ekaṃ amatadvāraṃ gavesanto sakideva ekādasa amatadvārāni alatthaṃ savaṇāya.|| ||

Seyyathā pi bhante purisassa agāraṃ ekādasadvāraṃ,|| so tasmiṃ agāre āditte eka-m-ekena pi dvārena sakkuṇeyya attāṇaṃ sotthiṃ kātuṃ,|| evam eva kho ahaṃ bhante imesaṃ ekādasannaṃ amatadvārānaṃ eka-m-ekena pi amatadvārena sakkuṇissāmi attāṇaṃ sotthiṃ kātuṃ.|| ||

Ime hi nāma bhante añña-titthiyā ācariyassa ācariyadhanaṃ pariyesissanti.|| ||

Kiṃpanāhaṃ āyasmato Ānandassa pūjaṃ na karissāmī” ti.|| ||

Atha kho Dasamo gahapati Aṭṭhakanāgaro Pāṭali-puttañ ca Vesālikañ ca bhikkhu-saṅghaṃ sannipātāpetvā paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.|| ||

Ekamekañ ca bhikkhuṃ paccekadussayugena acchādesi,|| āyasmantaṃ Ānandaṃ ticīvarena acchādesi.|| ||

Āyasmato ca Ānandassa pañcasataṃ vihāraṃ kārāpesī’ ti.|| ||
