Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthīyaṃ viharati||
Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.|| ||

2. Atha kho Jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṇkami.|| ||

Upasaṇkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi.

Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Jāṇussoṇī brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca.|| ||

[2] “Ye’me bho Gotama kula-puttā||
bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ uddissa saddhā agārasmā||
anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
bhavaṃ tesaṃ Gotamo pubbaṇgamo||
bhavaṃ tesaṃ Gotamo bahukāro,||
bhavaṃ tesaṃ Gotamo sam-ā-dapetā,||
bhoto ca pana Gotamassa sā janatā diṭṭh’ānugatiṃ āpajjatī” ti.|| ||

[3] “Evam-etaṃ brāhmaṇa,
evam-etaṃ brāhmaṇa.

Ye te brāhmaṇa, kula-puttā||
mamaṃ uddissa saddhā agārasmā||
anagāriyaṃ pabba-jitā||
ahaṃ tesaṃ pubbaṇgamo,||
ahaṃ tesaṃ bahukāro||
ahaṃ tesaṃ sam-ā-dapetā,||
mamañ ca pana sā janatā diṭṭh’ānugatiṃ āpajjatī” ti.|| ||

[4] “Du-r-abhisambhavāni hi bho Gotama,||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni,||
dukkaraṃ pavivekaṃ,||
du-r-abhiramaṃ ekatte,||
haranti maññe mano vanāni samādhiṃ alabha-mānassa [17] bhikkhuno” ti.|| ||

[5] “Evam-etaṃ brāhmaṇa,||
evam-etaṃ brāhmaṇa.

Du-r-abhisambhavāni hi brāhmaṇa||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni,||
dukkaraṃ pavivekaṃ,||
du-r-abhiramaṃ ekatte,||
haranti maññe mano vanāni samādhiṃ alabha-mānassa bhikkhuno” ti.|| ||

[6] “Mayham pi kho brāhmaṇa,||
pubbe va sambodhā||
anabhi-sambuddhassa||
bodhisattass’eva sato||
etad-ahosi:|| ||

‘Du-r-abhisambhavāni hi kho||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni,||
dukkaraṃ pavivekaṃ,||
du-r-abhiramaṃ ekatte,||
haranti maññe mano vanāni samādhiṃ alabha-mānassa bhikkhuno’ ti.|| ||

[7] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
a-parisuddha-kāya-kammantā||
araññe-vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
a-parisuddha-kāya-kammanta-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ a-parisuddha-kāya-kammanto||
araññe-vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
parisuddha-kāya-kammanto’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā parisuddha-kāya-kammantā||
araññe-vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa parisuddha-kāya-kammantataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomam-āpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[8] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
a-parisuddha-vacī-kammantā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
a-parisuddha-vacī-kammanta-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ a-parisuddha-vacī-kammanto||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
parisuddha-vacī-kammanto’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā parisuddha-vacī-kammantā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa parisuddha-vacī-kammantanaṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomam-āpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[9] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
a-parisuddha-mano-kammantā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
a-parisuddha-mano-kammantasandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ a-parisuddha mano-kammanto||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
parisuddha-mano-kammanto’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā parisuddha-mano-kammantā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa parisuddha-mano-kammantataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.

[10] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
a-parisuddhā-jīvā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
a-parisuddhā-jīva-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ a-parisuddhā-jīvo||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
parisuddhā-jīvo’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā parisuddhā-jīvā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa parisuddhā-jīvataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[11] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
abhijjhālū||
kāmesu||
tibba-sārāgā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
abhijjhālū kāmesu tibba-sārāga-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ abhijjhālū kāmesu tibba-sārāgo||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
anabhijjhālu’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā anabhijjhālū||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni [18] paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa anabhijjhālutaṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[12] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
byāpanna-cittā paduṭṭha-mana-saṇkappā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
byāpanna-citta paduṭṭha-mana-saṇkappa-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ byāpanna-citto paduṭṭha-mana-saṇkappo||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
metta-citto’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā metta-cittā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa metta-cittataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[13] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
thīna-middha-pariyuṭṭhitā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
thīna-middha pariyuṭṭhāna-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ thīna-middha-pariyuṭṭhito||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
vigata-thīna-middho’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā vigata-thīna-middhā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vigata-thīna-middhataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[14] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
uddhatā avūpasanta-cittā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
uddhata avūpasanna-citta-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ uddhato avūpasanta-citto||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
vūpasanta-citto’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā vūpasanta-cittā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vūpasanta-cittataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[15] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
kaṇkhī vecikicchī||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
kaṇkhā-vicikicchā sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ kaṇkhī-vecikicchī||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
tiṇṇa-vici-kiccho’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā tiṇṇa-vicikicchā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa tiṇṇa-vici-kicchataṃ||
attani [19] sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[16] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
attu-k-kaṃsakā paravambhī||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
attukkaṃsana paravambhana-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ attu-k-kaṃsako paravambhī||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
anattukaṃsako aparavambhī’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā anattu-k-kaṃsakā aparavambhī||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa anattu-k-kaṃsakataṃ aparavambhitaṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[17] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
chambhī bhīruka-jātikā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
chambhī bhīruka-jātika-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ chambhī bhīruka-jātiko||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
vigat’alomahaṃso’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā vigata-lomahaṃsā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vigata-lomahaṃsataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[18] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
lābha-sakkāra-silokaṃ nikāmaya-mānā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
lābha-sakkāra-silokaṃ nikāmaya-māna sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ lābha-sakkāra-silokaṃ nikāmaya-māno||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
appiccho’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā appicchā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa appicchataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[19] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
kusītā hīna-viriyā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
kusīta-hīna-viriya-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ kusīto hīna-viriyo||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
āraddha-viriyo’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā āraddha-viriyā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa āraddha-viriyataṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[20] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
muṭṭha-s-sati asampajānā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
muṭṭha-s-sati asampajāna-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ muṭṭha-s-sati asampajāno||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
upatthika-sati’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā upatthika-satī||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa upaṭṭhi-satitaṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[21] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
asamāhitā vibbhanta-cittā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
asamāhita vibbhanta-citta-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ asamāhito vibbhanta-citto||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
samādhi-sampanno’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā samādhi-sampannā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa samādhi-sampadaṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[22] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā||
duppaññā-ela-mūgā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
duppañña-ela-mūga-sandosa-hetu||
have te bhonto samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
akusalaṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ avhayanti.|| ||

Na kho panāhaṃ duppañño-ela-mūgo||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi,||
paññā-sampanno’ham-asmi.|| ||

Ye hi vo ariyā paññā-sampannā||
araññe vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevanti,||
tesam-ahaṃ aññatamo.|| ||

Etam-ahaṃ brāhmaṇa paññā-sampadaṃ||
attani sampassamāno bhiyyo||
pallomamāpādiṃ araññe vihārāya’ ti.|| ||

[23] Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosī:|| ||

‘Yan-nūn-ā-haṃ yā tā rattiyo abhiññātā abhilakkhitā,||
cātu-d-dasī||
pañca-dasī||
aṭṭhamī ca pakkhassa,||
tathā-rūpāsu rattisu||
yāni tāni ārāma-cetiyāni||
vana-cetiyāni||
rukkha-cetiyāni||
bhiṃsanakāni||
salomahaṃsāni,||
tathā-rūpesu sen’āsanesu vihareyyaṃ,||
app-eva nāma taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ passeyyan’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa aparena samayena||
yā tā rattiyo abhiññātā abhilakkhitā,||
cātu-d-dasī||
pañca-dasī||
aṭṭhamī ca pakkhassa,||
tathā-rūpāsu rattisu||
yāni tāni ārāma-cetiyāni||
vana-cetiyāni||
rukkha-cetiyāni||
bhiṃsanakāni||
salomahaṃsāni,||
tathā-rūpesu sen’āsanesu viharāmi.|| ||

Tatra ca me brāhmaṇa viharato||
mago vā āgacchati,||
moro vā [21] kaṭṭhaṃ pāteti,||
vāto vā paṇṇasaṭaṃ ereti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Etaṃ nūna taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ āga-c-chatī’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Kin-nu kho ahaṃ aññadatthu bhaya-pāṭikaṇkhī viharāmi?|| ||

Yan-nūn-ā-haṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ||
yathā-bhūtassa me||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ āgacchati,||
tathā-bhūtaṃ||
tathā-bhūto va||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ paṭivineyyan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa caṅkamantassa||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ āgacchati.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa||
n’eva tāva tiṭṭhāmi,||
na nisīdāmi,||
na nipajjāmi,||
yāva caṅkamanto va||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ paṭivinemi.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa ṭhitassa||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ āgacchati.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa||
n’eva tāva caṇkamāmi,||
na nisīdāmi,||
na nipajjāmi,||
yāva ṭhito va||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ paṭivinemi.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa nisinnassa||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ āgacchati.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa||
n’eva tāva nipajjāmi,||
na tiṭṭhāmi,||
na caṇkamāmi,||
yāva nisinno va||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ paṭivinemi.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa nipannassa||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ āgacchati.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa||
n’eva tāva nisīdāmi,||
na tiṭṭhāmi,||
na caṇkamāmi,||
yāva nipanno va||
taṃ bhaya-bheravaṃ paṭivinemi.|| ||

[24] Santi kho pana brāhmaṇa||
eke samaṇa-brāhmaṇā||
‘Rattiṃ yeva samānaṃ divā’ ti sañjānanti,||
‘Divā yeva samānaṃ rattī’ ti sañjānanti,||
idam ahaṃ tesaṃ samaṇa-brāhmaṇānaṃ||
sa-m-moha-vihārasmiṃ vadāmi.|| ||

Ahaṃ kho pana brāhmaṇa||
‘Rattiṃ yeva samānaṃ rattī’ ti sañjānāmi,||
‘Divā yeva samānaṃ divā’ ti sañjānāmi.

Yaṃ kho taṃ brāhmaṇa||
sammā vadamāno vadeyya:|| ||

‘A-sa-m-moha-dhammo satto||
loke uppanno||
bahu-jana-hitāya||
bahu-jana-sukhāya||
lok-ā-nukampāya||
atthāya||
hitāya||
sukhāya deva-manussānan’ ti,||
mam eva taṃ||
sammā vadamāno vadeyya:|| ||

‘A-sa-m-moha-dhammo satto||
loke uppanno||
bahu-jana-hitāya||
bahu-jana-sukhāya||
lok-ā-nukampāya||
atthāya||
hitāya||
sukhāya deva-manussānan’ ti.|| ||

Āraddhaṃ kho pana me brāhmaṇa viriyaṃ ahosi asallīnaṃ,||
upaṭṭhitā sati asammuṭṭhā,||
passaddho kāyo asāraddho,||
samāhitaṃ cittaṃ ek’aggaṃ.|| ||

[25] So kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vivicc’eva kāmehi||
vivicca akusalehi dhammehi||
sa-vitakkaṃ||
sa-vicāraṃ||
viveka-jaṃ pītisukhaṃ||
paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja vihāsiṃ.|| ||

[26] Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā||
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ||
cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ||
avi- [22] takkaṃ||
avicāraṃ||
samādhi-jaṃ pītisukhaṃ||
dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja vihāsiṃ.|| ||

[27] Pītiyā ca virāgā||
upekhako ca vihāsiṃ||
sato ca sampajāno,||
sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedesiṃ,||
yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti||
‘upekhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti||
tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja vihāsiṃ.|| ||

[28] Sukhassa ca pahānā||
dukkhassa ca pahānā||
pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṇgamā||
adukkhaṃ||
asukhaṃ||
upekhā sati-pārisuddhiṃ||
catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja vihāsiṃ.|| ||

[29] So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe,||
pariyodāte,||
an-aṅgaṇe,||
vigat’ūpakkilese,||
mudubhūte,||
kammaniye,||
ṭhite,||
ānejjappatte,||
pubbe-nivāsānu-s-sati-ñāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmesiṃ.

So aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarāmi,||
seyyath’īdaṃ:|| ||

Ekam pi jātiṃ,||
dve pi jātiyo,||
tisso pi jātiyo,||
catasso pi jātiyo,||
pañca pi jātiyo,||
dasa pi jātiyo,||
vīsam pi jātiyo,||
tiṃsam pi jātiyo,||
cattārīsam pi jātiyo,||
paññāsam pi jātiyo,||
jāti-satam pi jāti-sahassam pi,||
jāti-sata-sahassam pi,||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-kappe,||
aneke pi vivaṭṭa-kappe,||
aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe:|| ||

‘Amutr’āsiṃ evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ gotto||
evaṃ vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||
evaṃ sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedī||
evam-āyu-pariyanto,||
so tato cuto||
amutra udapādiṃ.

Tatrā p’āsiṃ||
evaṃ-nāmo||
evaṃ gotto||
evaṃ vaṇṇo||
evam-āhāro||
evaṃ sukha-dukkha-paṭisaṃvedī||
evam-āyu-pariyanto.

So tato cuto||
idh’ūpapanno’ ti.

Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ pubbe-nivāsaṃ anussarāmi.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho me brāhmaṇa rattiyā paṭhame yāme paṭhamā vijjā adhigatā,||
avijjā vihatā,||
vijjā uppannā,||
tamo vihato,||
āloko uppanno,||
yathā taṃ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato.|| ||

[30] So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe,||
pariyodāte,||
an-aṅgaṇe,||
vigat’ūpakkilese,||
mudubhūte,||
kammaniye,||
ṭhite,||
ānejjappatte,||
sattāṇaṃ cut’ūpapātañāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmesiṃ.|| ||

So dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkanta-mānusakena satte passāmi cavamāne upapajjamāne,||
hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate.

Yathā kamm’ūpage satte pajānāmi:|| ||

‘Ime vata bhonto sattā||
kāya-du-c-caritena samannāgatā,||
vacī-du-c-caritena samannāgatā,||
mano-du-c-caritena samannāgatā,||
ariyānaṃ upavādakā,||
micchā-diṭṭhikā,||
micchā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā||
apāyaṃ duggatiṃ||
vinipātaṃ||
Nirayaṃ upapannā.

Ime vā pana bhonto sattā||
kāya-sucaritena [23] samannāgatā,||
vacī-sucaritena samannāgatā,||
mano-sucaritena samannāgatā,||
ariyānaṃ anupavādakā,||
sammā-diṭṭhikā sammā-diṭṭhi-kamma-samādānā,||
te kāyassa bhedā param maraṇā||
sugatiṃ||
saggaṃ lokaṃ upapannā’ ti.

āsavānaṃ khaya-ñāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmesiṃ.

So:|| ||

‘Idaṃ dukkhan’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.

‘Ayaṃ dukkha-samudayo’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.

‘Ayaṃ dukkha-nirodho’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.

‘Ayaṃ dukkha-nirodha-gāminī paṭipadā’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.|| ||

‘Ime āsavā’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.

‘Ayaṃ āsava-samudayo’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.

‘Ayaṃ āsava-nirodho’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.

‘Ayaṃ āsava-nirodha-gāminī paṭipadā’ ti||
yathā-bhūtaṃ abbhaññāsiṃ.|| ||

Tassa me evaṃ jānato||
evaṃ passato||
kām’āsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccittha.

Bhavāsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccittha.

Avijjāsavā pi cittaṃ vimuccittha.

Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttam-iti ñāṇaṃ ahosi:

‘Khīṇā jāti,||
vusitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ,||
kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ,||
nāparaṃ itthattāyā’ ti abbhaññāsiṃ.|| ||

Ayaṃ kho me brāhmaṇa rattiyā pacchime yāme tatiyā vijjā adhigatā,||
avijjā vihatā,||
vijjā uppannā tamo vihato,||
āloko uppanno,||
yathā taṃ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato.”|| ||

[32] Siyā kho pana te brāhmaṇa evam assa:|| ||

“Ajjā pi nūna Samaṇo Gotamo||
avīta-rāgo||
avīta-doso||
avīta-moho,||
tasmā araññe-vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevatī” ti.|| ||

“Na kho pan’etaṃ brāhmaṇa evaṃ daṭṭhabbaṃ.|| ||

Dve kho ahaṃ brāhmaṇa attha-vase sampassamāno araññe-vana-pa-t-thāni pantāni sen’āsanāni paṭisevāmi:|| ||

Attano ca diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ sampassamāno,||
pacchimañ ca janataṃ anukampamāno” ti.|| ||

[33] “Anukampitarūpā’yaṃ bhotā Gotamena pacchimā ja- [24] natā,||
yathā taṃ arahatā Sammā-SamBuddhena.

Abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama!

Abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama!

Seyyathā pi bho Gotama nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya,||
paṭi-c-channaṃ vā vivareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Maggaṃ ācikkheyya,||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya:||
‘cakkhu-manto rūpāni dakkhintī’ ti||
evam evaṃ bhotā Gotamena||
aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.

Es’āhaṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi||
Dhammañ ca||
bhikkhu-saṇghañ ca.

Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ Gotamo||
dhāretu ajja-t-agge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan” ti.|| ||
