Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Rājagahe viharati Veluvane Kalandakanivāpe.|| ||

Atha kho Abhayo rāja-kumāro yena Nigaṇṭho Nātaputto ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Nigaṇṭhaṃ Nātaputtaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho Abhayaṃ rāja-kumāraṃ Nigaṇṭho Nātaputto etad avoca:|| ||

“Ehi tvaṃ rāja-kumāra,||
samaṇassa Gotamassa vādaṃ āropehi.|| ||

Evaṃ te kalyāṇo kitti-saddo ababhuggacchati:||
‘Abhayena rāja-kumārena samaṇassa Gotamassa evaṃ mahiddhikassa evaṃ mah-ā-nubhāvassa vādo āropito'” ti.|| ||

“Yathā kathaṃ panāhaṃ bhante samaṇassa Gotamassa evaṃ mahiddhikassa||
evaṃ mānubhāvassa vādaṃ āropessāmī” ti?|| ||

“Ehi tvaṃ rāja-kumāra,||
yena Samaṇo Gotamo ten’upasaṅkama,||
upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ vadehi:|| ||

‘Bhāseyya nu kho bhante Tathāgato taṃ vācaṃ yā sā vācā paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā’ ti?|| ||

Sace te Samaṇo Gotamo evaṃ puṭṭho evaṃ vyākaroti:|| ||

‘Bhāseyya rāja-kumāra,||
Tathāgato taṃ vācaṃ yā sā vācā paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā’ ti.|| ||

Tam enaṃ tvaṃ evaṃ vadeyyāsi:|| ||

‘Atha kiñ carahi te bhante puthujjanena nānā-karaṇaṃ,||
puthujjano pi hi taṃ vācaṃ bhāseyya,||
yā sā vācā paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā’ ti.|| ||

Sace pana te Samaṇo Gotamo evaṃ puṭṭho evaṃ vyākaroti:|| ||

‘Na rāja-kumāra Tathāgato taṃ vācaṃ bhāseyya yā sā vācā [393] paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā’ ti.|| ||

Tam enaṃ tvaṃ evaṃ vadeyyāsi:|| ||

‘Atha kiñ carahi te bhante devadatto vyākato:||
“Āpāyiko devadatto,||
nerayiko devadatto,||
kappaṭṭho devadatto,||
atekiccho devadatto” ti.|| ||

Tāya ca pana te vācāya devadatto kupito ahosi anatta-mano’ ti.|| ||

Imaṃ kho te rāja-kumāra,||
Samaṇo Gotamo ubhato koṭikaṃ pañhaṃ puṭṭho samāno n’eva sakkhiti uggilituṃ||
n’eva sakkhiti ogilituṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi nāma purisassa ayosiṅghāṭakaṃ kaṇṭhe vilaggaṃ,||
so n’eva sakkuṇeyya uggilituṃ,||
n’eva sakuṇeyya ogilituṃ.|| ||

Evam eva kho te rāja-kumāra Samaṇo Gotamo imaṃ ubhatokoṭikaṃ pañhaṃ puṭṭho samāno n’eva sakkhiti uggilituṃ,||
n’eva sakkhiti ogilitun” ti.|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho Abhayo rāja-kumāro Nigaṇṭhassa Nātaputtassa paṭi-s-sutvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Nigaṇṭhaṃ Nātaputtaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami,||
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnassa kho Abhayassa rāja-kumārassa suriyaṃ oloketvā etad ahosi.|| ||

“Akālo kho ajja Bhagavato vādaṃ āropetuṃ,||
sve dānāhaṃ sake nivesane Bhagavato vādaṃ āropessāmī” ti||
Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Adhivāsetu me bhante Bhagavā svātanāya attacatuttho bhattan” ti?|| ||

Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhī-bhāvena.|| ||

Atha kho Abhayo rāja-kumāro Bhagavato adhivāsanaṃ viditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā pakkāmi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaraṃ ādāya yena Abhayassa rāja-kumārassa nivesanaṃ ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Atha kho Abhayo rāja-kumāro Bhagavantaṃ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.|| ||

Atha kho Abhayo rāja-kumāro Bhagavantaṃ bhuttāviṃ onīta-patta-pāṇiṃ aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinno kho Abhayo rāja-kumāro Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Bhāseyya nu kho bhante Tathāgato taṃ vācaṃ yā sā vācā paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā” ti.|| ||

“Na kho’ttha rāja-kumāra ekaṃsenā” ti.|| ||

“Ettha bhante anassuṃ Nigaṇṭhā” ti.|| ||

“Kiṃ pana tvaṃ rāja-kumāra evaṃ vadesi:|| ||

[394] ‘Ettha bhante anassuṃ Nigaṇṭhā'” ti?|| ||

“Idāhaṃ bhante yena Nigaṇṭho Nātaputto ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Nigaṇṭhaṃ Nātaputtaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃ.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho maṃ bhante Nigaṇṭho Nātaputto etad avoca:|| ||

‘Ehi tvaṃ rāja-kumāra,||
yena Samaṇo Gotamo ten’upasaṅkama,||
upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṃ Gotamaṃ evaṃ vadehi:|| ||

“Bhāseyya nu kho bhante Tathāgato taṃ vācaṃ yā sā vācā paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā” ti?|| ||

Sace te Samaṇo Gotamo evaṃ puṭṭho evaṃ vyākaroti:|| ||

“Bhāseyya rāja-kumāra,||
Tathāgato taṃ vācaṃ yā sā vācā paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā” ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Abhayaṃ rāja-kumāraṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Taṃ kiṃ [395] maññasi rāja-kumāra?|| ||

Sac’āyaṃ kumāro tuyhaṃ vā pamādam-anvāya dhātiyā vā pamādam-anvāya kaṭṭhaṃ vā kaṭhalaṃ vā mukhe āhareyya,||
kinti naṃ kareyyāsī” ti?|| ||

“Āhareyy’assāhaṃ bhante.|| ||

Sace ahaṃ bhante na sakkuṇeyyaṃ ādiken’eva āhattuṃ,||
vāmena hatthena sīsaṃ pariggahetvā dakkhiṇena hatthena vaṅkaṅguliṃ karitvā salohitam pi āhareyyaṃ.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Atthi me bhante kumāre anukampā” ti.|| ||

“Evam eva kho rāja-kumāra,||
yaṃ Tathāgato vācaṃ jānāti abhūtaṃ atacchaṃ anattha-saṃhitaṃ,||
sā ca paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā,||
na taṃ Tathāgato vācaṃ bhāsati.|| ||

Yam pi Tathāgato vācaṃ jānāti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ anattha-saṃhitaṃ||
sā ca paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā,||
tam pi Tathāgato vācaṃ na bhāsati.|| ||

Yañ ca kho Tathāgato vācaṃ jānāti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ attha-saṃhitaṃ||
sā ca paresaṃ appiyā amanāpā,||
tatra kāl’aññū Tathāgato hoti tassā vācāya veyyākaraṇāya.|| ||

Yaṃ Tathāgato vācaṃ jānāti abhūtaṃ atacchaṃ anattha-saṃhitaṃ||
sā ca paresaṃ piyā manāpā,||
na taṃ Tathāgato vācaṃ bhāsati.|| ||

Yam pi Tathāgato vācaṃ jānāti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ anattha-saṃhitaṃ||
sā ca paresaṃ piyā manāpā,||
tam pi Tathāgato vācaṃ na bhāsati.|| ||

Yañ ca kho Tathāgato vācaṃ jānāti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ attha-saṃhitaṃ||
sā ca paresaṃ piyā manāpā,||
tatra kāl’aññū Tathāgato hoti tassā vācāya veyyākaraṇāya.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Atthi rāja-kumāra Tathāgatassa sattesu anukampā” ti?|| ||

“Ye’me bhante khattiya-paṇḍitā pi||
brāhmaṇa-paṇḍitā pi||
gahapati-paṇḍitā pi||
samaṇa-paṇḍitā pi pañhaṃ abhisaṅkhāritvā Tathāgataṃ upasaṅkamitvā pucchanti,||
pubbe va nu kho etaṃ bhante Bhagavato cetaso parivitakkitaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Ye maṃ upasaṅkamitvā evaṃ pucchi’ssan’ ti,|| ||

tes’āhaṃ evaṃ puṭṭho evaṃ vyākarissāmīti,||
udāhu ṭhānaso v’etaṃ Tathāgataṃ paṭibhātī” ti?|| ||

“Tena hi rāja-kumāra taṃ yeva ettha paṭipucchissāmi,||
yathā te khameyya,||
tathā naṃ vyākareyyāsi.|| ||

Taṃ kiṃ maññasi rāja-kumāra?|| ||

Kusalo tvaṃ rathassa aṅgapaccaṅgānan” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante,||
kusalo ahaṃ rathassa aṅgapaccaṅgānan” ti.|| ||

“Taṃ kim maññasi rāja-kumāra?|| ||

Ye taṃ upasaṅkamitvā evaṃ puccheyyuṃ:|| ||

‘Kiṃ nām idaṃ rathassa aṅgapaccaṅgan’ ti?|| ||

pubbe nu kho te etaṃ cetaso pari- [396] vitakkitaṃ assa:|| ||

‘Ye maṃ upasaṅkamitvā evaṃ pucchissanti tes’āhaṃ evaṃ puṭṭho evaṃ vyākarissāmī’ ti?|| ||

udāhu ṭhānaso v’etaṃ taṃ paṭibhāseyyā” ti?|| ||

“Ahaṃ hi bhante rathiko saññato kusalo rathassa aṅgapaccaṅgānaṃ,||
sabbāni me rathassa aṅgapaccaṅgāni suviditāni,||
ṭhānaso v’etaṃ maṃ paṭibhāseyyā” ti.|| ||

“Evam eva kho rāja-kumāra ye te khattiya-paṇḍitā pi||
brāhmaṇa-paṇḍitā pi||
gahapati-paṇḍitā pi||
samaṇa-paṇḍitā pi pañhaṃ abhisaṅkhāritvā Tathāgataṃ upasaṅkamitvā pucchanti||
ṭhānaso v’etaṃ Tathāgataṃ paṭibhāti.|| ||

Taṃ kissa hetu?|| ||

Sā hi rāja-kumāra Tathāgatassa dhamma-dhātu suppaṭi-viddhā yassā dhamma-dhātuyā suppaṭi-viddhattā ṭhānaso v’etaṃ Tathāgataṃ paṭibhātī” ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Abhayo rāja-kumāro Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Abhikkantaṃ bhante!|| ||

Abhikkantaṃ bhante!|| ||

Seyyathā pi bho Gotama nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya,||
paṭi-c-channaṃ vā vivareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Maggaṃ ācikkheyya,||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya,||
‘cakkhu-manto rūpāni dakkhintī’ ti,||
evam evaṃ bhotā Gotamena aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.|| ||

Es’āhaṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi||
Dhammañ ca||
bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca.|| ||

Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ Gotamo dhāretu ajja-t-agge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan” ti.|| ||
