Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Kosambīyaṃ viharati Ghositārāme.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayena Kosambīyaṃ bhikkhū bhaṇḍanajātā kalaha-jātā vivādāpannā añña-maññaṃ mukha-sattīhi vitudantā viharanti.|| ||

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅ- [153] kamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ aṭṭhāsi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ ṭhito kho so bhikkhu Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Idha bhante, Kosambīyaṃ bhikkhū bhaṇḍanajātā kalaha-jātā vivādāpannā añña-maññaṃ mukha-sattīhi vitudantā viharanti.|| ||

Sādhu bhante, Bhagavā yena te bhikkhū ten’upasaṅkamatu anukampaṃ upādāyā” ti.|| ||

Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhī-bhāvena.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā yena te bhikkhū ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etad avoca:|| ||

“Alaṃ bhikkhave, mā bhaṇḍanaṃ, mā kalahaṃ, mā viggahaṃ, mā vivādan” ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte aññataro bhikkhu Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca.|| ||

“Āgametu bhante, Bhagavā dhammassāmi.|| ||

Appo-s-sukko bhante, Bhagavā diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ anuyutto viharatu.|| ||

Mayam etena bhaṇḍanena kalahena viggahena vivādena paññāyissāmā” ti.|| ||

Dutiyam pi kho Bhagavā te bhikkhū etad avoca:|| ||

“Alaṃ bhikkhave, mā bhaṇḍanaṃ, mā kalahaṃ, mā viggahaṃ, mā vivādan” ti.|| ||

Dutiyam pi kho so bhikkhu Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Āgametu bhante, Bhagavā dhammassāmi.|| ||

Appo-s-sukko bhante, Bhagavā diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ anuyutto viharatu.|| ||

Tatiyam pi kho so bhikkhu Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Āgametu bhante, Bhagavā dhammassāmi.|| ||

Appo-s-sukko bhante, Bhagavā diṭṭha-dhamma-sukha-vihāraṃ anuyutto viharatu.|| ||

Mayam etena bhaṇḍanena kalahena viggahena vivādena paññāyissāmā” ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇha-samayaṃ nivāsetvā patta-cīvaram ādāya Kosambīṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.|| ||

Kosambīyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto sen’āsanaṃ saṃsāmetvā patta-cīvaram ādāya ṭhitako va imā gāthā abhāsi:|| ||

[154] Puthu saddo samajano||
na bālo koci maññatha,||
Saṅghasmiṃ bhijjamānasmiṃ||
nāññaṃ bhiyyo amaññatha.|| ||

Parimuṭṭhā paṇḍitā bhāsā||
vācā gocarabhāṇino,||
Yāv’icchanti mukhāyāmaṃ||
yena nītā na taṃ vidū.|| ||

Akkocchi maṃ avadhi maṃ||
ajini maṃ ahāsi me,||
Ye taṃ upanayhanti||
veraṃ tesaṃ na sammati.|| ||

Akkocchi maṃ avadhi maṃ||
ajini maṃ āhāsi me,||
Ye taṃ na upanayhanti||
veraṃ tesūpasammati.|| ||

Na hi verena verāni||
sammantīdha kudācanaṃ,||
Averena ca sammanti||
esa dhammo sanantano.|| ||

Pare ca na vijānanti||
mayam ettha yamāmase,||
Ye ca tattha vijānanti tato sammanti medhagā.|| ||

Aṭṭhicchidā pāṇaharā||
gavāssadhanahārino,||
Raṭṭhaṃ vilumpamānānaṃ||
tesam pi hoti saṅgati||
kasmā tumhāka no siyā?|| ||

Sace labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaṃ||
saddhiṃ caraṃ sādhuvihāri dhīraṃ,||
Abhibhuyya sabbāni parissayāni||
careyya ten’atta-mano satīmā.|| ||

No ce labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaṃ||
saddhiṃ caraṃ sādhuvihāri dhīraṃ,||
Rājā va raṭṭhaṃ vijitaṃ pahāya||
eko care mātaṅg’araṃ yeva nāgo.|| ||

Ekassa caritaṃ seyyo||
n’atthi bāle sahāyatā,||
Eko care na ca pāpāni kayirā||
appossukko mātaṅg’araṃ yeva nāgo ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā ṭhitako va imā gāthā bhāsitvā yena Bālakaloṇakāragāmo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Tena kho pana [155] samayen’āyasmā Bhagu Bālakaloṇakāragāme viharati.|| ||

Addasā kho āyasmā Bhagu Bhagavantaṃ dūrato va āga-c-chantaṃ.|| ||

Disvāna āsanaṃ paññāpesi udakañ ca pādānaṃ.|| ||

Nisīdi Bhagavā paññatte āsane.|| ||

Nisajja pāde pakkhālesi.|| ||

Āyasmā pi kho bhagu Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ bhaguṃ Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

“Kacci bhikkhu, khamanīyaṃ, kacci yāpanīyaṃ, kacci piṇḍakena na kilamasī” ti?|| ||

“Khamanīyaṃ Bhagavā, yāpanīyaṃ Bhagavā, na c’āhaṃ bhante piṇḍakena kilamāmī” ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṃ bhaguṃ dhammiyā kathāya sanda-s-setvā samāda-petvā samutte-chetvā samp’ahaṃsetvā uṭṭhāy’āsanā yena Pācīnavaṃsadāyo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Tena kho pana samayen’āyasmā ca Anuruddho āyasmā ca Nandiyo āyasmā ca Kimbilo Pācīnavaṃsadāye viharanti.|| ||

Addasā kho dāyapālo Bhagavantaṃ dūrato va āga-c-chantaṃ.|| ||

Disvāna Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Mā samaṇa etaṃ dāyaṃ pāvisi, sant’ettha tayo kula-puttā attakāmarūpā viharanti,||
mā tesaṃ aphāsuṃ akāsī’ ti.|| ||

Assosi kho āyasmā Anuruddho dāyapālassa Bhagavatā saddhiṃ mantayamānassa.|| ||

Sutvāna dāyapālaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Mā āvuso dāyapāla, Bhagavantaṃ vāresi.|| ||

Satthā no Bhagavā anuppatto” ti.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā Anuruddho yen’āyasmā ca Nandiyo yen’āyasmā ca Kimbilo ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ ca Nandiyaṃ āyasmantaṃ ca Kimbilaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Abhi-k-kamath’āyasmanto, abhi-k-kamath’āyasmanto; Satthā no Bhagavā anuppatto” ti.|| ||

Atha kho āyasmā ca Anuruddho āyasmā ca Nandiyo āyasmā ca Kimbilo Bhagavantaṃ paccuggantvā eko Bhagavato pattacīvaraṃ paṭiggahesi, eko āsanaṃ paññāpesi, eko pādodakaṃ upaṭṭhapesi.|| ||

Nisīdi Bhagavā paññatte āsane.|| ||

Nisajja pāde pakkhālesi.|| ||

Te pi kho āyasmanto Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ Anuruddhaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

“Kacci vo Anurudhā, khamanīyaṃ, kacci yāpanīyaṃ, kacci piṇḍakena na kilamathā” ti?|| ||

[156] “Khamanīyaṃ Bhagavā, yāpanīyaṃ Bhagavā.|| ||

Na ca mayaṃ bhante, piṇḍakena kilamāmā” ti.|| ||

“Kacci pana vo Anuruddhā, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā añña-maññaṃ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharathā” ti?|| ||

“Taggha mayaṃ bhante, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā añña-maññaṃ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharāmā” ti.|| ||

“Yathā kathaṃ pana tumhe Anuruddhā, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā añña-maññaṃ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharathā” ti?|| ||

“Idha mayhaṃ bhante, evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Lābhā vata me, su-laddhaṃ vata me, yo’haṃ eva-rūpehi sabrahma-cārīhi saddhiṃ viharāmī’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante, imesu āyasmantesu mettaṃ kāya-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

Mettaṃ vacī-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

Mettaṃ mano-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante, evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Yan’nūn-ā-haṃ sakaṃ cittaṃ nikkhi-pitvā imesaṃ yeva āyasmantānaṃ cittassa vasena vatteyyan’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ bhante, sakaṃ cittaṃ nikkhapitvā imesaṃ yeva āyasmantānaṃ cittassa vasena vattāmi.|| ||

Nānā hi kho no bhante, kāyā, ekaṃ ca pana maññe cittan” ti.|| ||

Āyasmā pi kho Nandiyo etad avoca:|| ||

“Mayam pi kho, bhante, evam hoti:|| ||

“Idha mayhaṃ bhante, evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Lābhā vata me, su-laddhaṃ vata me, yo’haṃ eva-rūpehi sabrahma-cārīhi saddhiṃ viharāmī’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante, imesu āyasmantesu mettaṃ kāya-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

Mettaṃ vacī-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

Mettaṃ mano-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante, evaṃ hoti:|| ||

‘Yan’nūn-ā-haṃ sakaṃ cittaṃ nikkhi-pitvā imesaṃ yeva āyasmantānaṃ cittassa vasena vatteyyan’ ti.|| ||

‘Lābhā vata me, su-laddhaṃ vata me, yo’haṃ eva-rūpehi sabrahma-cārīhi saddhiṃ viharāmī’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ bhante, imesu āyasmantesu mettaṃ kāya-kammaṃ pacc’upatthikaṃ āvī c’eva raho ca.|| ||

“Evaṃ kho mayaṃ bhante, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā añña-maññaṃ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharāmā” ti.|| ||

“Sādhu sādhu Anuruddhā.|| ||

Kacci pana vo Anuruddhā, appamattā ātāpino pahit’attā viharathā” ti?|| ||

[157] “Taggha mayaṃ bhante, appamattā ātāpino pahit’attā viharāmā” ti.|| ||

“Yathā kathaṃ pana tumhe Anuruddhā,||
appamattā ātāpino pahit’attā viharathā” ti?|| ||

“Idha bhante, amhākaṃ yo paṭhamaṃ gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamati,||
so āsanāni paññāpeti,||
pānīyaṃ paribhojanīyaṃ upaṭṭhapeti,||
avakkārapātiṃ upaṭṭhapeti.|| ||

Yo pacchā gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamati,||
sace hoti bhuttāvaseso,||
sace ākaṅkhati,||
bhuñjati.|| ||

No ce ākaṅkhati,||
appaharite vā chaḍḍeti,||
appāṇake vā udake opilāpeti,||
so āsanāni paṭisāmeti,||
pānīyaṃ paribhojanīyaṃ paṭisāmeti.|| ||

Avakkārapātiṃ dhovitvā paṭisāmeti,||
bhatt’aggaṃ sammajjati.|| ||

Yo passati pānīyaghaṭaṃ vā||
paribhojanīyaghaṭaṃ vā||
vaccaghaṭaṃ vā rittaṃ tucchaṃ,||
so upaṭṭhapeti.|| ||

Sac’assa hoti avisayhaṃ,||
hatthavikārena dutiyaṃ āmantetvā hatthavilaṅghakena upaṭṭhapema.|| ||

Na tv’eva mayaṃ bhante,||
ta-p-paccayā vācaṃ bhindāma.|| ||

Pañvāhikaṃ kho pana mayaṃ bhante,||
sabbarattiyaṃ dhammiyā kathāya sannisīdāma.|| ||

Evaṃ kho mayaṃ bhante,||
appamattā ātāpino pahit’attā viharāmā” ti.|| ||

“Sādhu sādhu Anuruddhā.|| ||

Atthi pana vo Anuruddhā,||
evaṃ appamattāṇaṃ ātāpīnaṃ pahit’attāṇaṃ viharantānaṃ uttariṃ manussa-dhammā alam ariya-ñāṇa-dassana-viseso adhigato phāsuviharo” ti?|| ||

“Idha mayaṃ bhante, appamattā ātāpino pahit’attā viharantā||
obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāma dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So kho pana no obhāso na cirass’eva antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ,||
tañ ca nimittaṃ na paṭivijjhamā” ti.|| ||

Taṃ kho pana vo Anuruddhā, nimittaṃ paṭivijjhitabbaṃ.|| ||

Aham pi sudaṃ Anuruddhā,||
pubbe va sambodhā anabhi-sambuddho Bodhisatto va samāno obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāmi dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So kho pana me obhāso [158] na cirass’eva antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu||
ko paccayo,||
yena me obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Vicikicchā kho me udapādi.|| ||

Vicikicchādhi karaṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So haṃ tathā karissāmi,||
yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissatī’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāmi dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So kho pana me obhāso na cirass’eva antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu||
ko paccayo,||
yena me obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Amana-sikāro kho me udapādi.|| ||

Amana-sikārādhi karaṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So haṃ tathā karissāmi,||
yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissatī||
na amana-sikaroti’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāmi dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So kho pana me obhāso na cirass’eva antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu||
ko paccayo,||
yena me obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Thīna-middhaṃ kho me udapādi.|| ||

Thinamiddhādhi karaṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So haṃ tathā karissāmi,||
yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissatī||
na amana-sikaro,||
na thīna-middhan’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāmi dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So kho pana me obhāso na cirass’eva antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu||
ko paccayo,||
yena me obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Chamhitattaṃ kho me udapādi.|| ||

Chambhitattādhi karaṇaṃ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.’|| ||

PTS here (and below), noting that the simile is an interruption of the thought, puts it in brackets. Woodward has solved the resulting problem by turning the “‘ti” into, “So I thought:”.

Seyyathā pi Anuruddhā puriso ekaṃ nidhimukhaṃ gavesanto sakideva pañca nidhimukhāni adhigaccheyya.|| ||

Tassa tato nidānaṃ ubbillaṃ uppajjeyya.|| ||

Evam eva kho Anuruddhā ubbillaṃ kho me udapādi.|| ||

Ubbillādhi karaṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati||
na amana-sikāro||
na thīmiddhaṃ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāmi dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Accāraddha-viriyaṃ kho me udapādi.|| ||

Accāraddha-viriyādhi karaṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Anuruddhā puriso ubhogi hatthehi vaṭṭakaṃ gāḷhaṃ gaṇheyya.|| ||

So tatth’eva matameyya.|| ||

Evam eva kho Anuruddhā, accāraddha-viriyaṃ kho me udapādi.|| ||

Accāraddha-viriyādhi karaṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So haṃ tathā karissāmi,||
yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati||
na amana-sikāro||
na thīmiddhaṃ||
na chambhitattaṃ||
na ubbillaṃ||
na duṭṭhullaṃ,||
na accāraddha-viriyan’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto obhāsañ c’eva sañjānāmi dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So kho pana me obhāso na cirass’eva antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu||
ko paccayo,||
yena me obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Atilīna-viriyaṃ kho me [160] udapādi.|| ||

Atilīna-viriyādhikaraṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

Seyyathā pi Anuruddhā puriso vaṭṭakaṃ sithilaṃ gaṇheyya.|| ||

So tattha hatthato uppateyya.|| ||

Evam eva kho me Anuruddhā, atilīnaviriyaṃ udapādi.|| ||

Atilīna-viriyādhi karaṇañ ca pana me samādhi cavi.|| ||

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antara-dhāyati dassanañ ca rūpānaṃ.|| ||

So haṃ tathā karissāmi,||
yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati||
na amana-sikāro||
na thīmiddhaṃ||
na chambhitattaṃ||
na ubbillaṃ||
na duṭṭhullaṃ,||
na accāraddha-viriyaṃ||
na atilīna-viriyan’ ti.|| ||

na amana-sikāro||
na thīmiddhaṃ||

na duṭṭhullaṃ,||
na accāraddha-viriyaṃ||
na atilīna-viriyaṃ,||
na abhijappā’ ti.|| ||

yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati||
na amana-sikāro||
na thīmiddhaṃ||

na duṭṭhullaṃ,||
na accāraddha-viriyaṃ||
na atilīna-viriyaṃ,||
na abhijappā,||
na nānatta-saññā’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā,||
‘Vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā vici-kicchaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Amana-sikāro cittassa upakkileso ti iti viditvā amana-sikāraṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Thīna-middhaṃ cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā thīna-middhaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Chambhitattaṃ cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā chambhitattaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Ubbillaṃ1 cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā ubbillaṃ1 cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Duṭṭhullaṃ cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā duṭṭhullaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Accāraddha-viriyaṃ cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā accāraddha-viriyaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Atilīnaviriyaṃ cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā atilīnaviriyaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Abhijappā cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā abhijappaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Nānattasaññaṃ cittassa upakkiloso’ ti||
iti viditvā nānattasaññaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

‘Atinijjhāyitattaṃ rūpānaṃ cittassa [161] upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā atinijjhāyitattaṃ rūpānaṃ cittassa upakkilesaṃ pajahiṃ.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto||
obhāsam pi hi kho sañjānāmi,||
na ca rūpāni passāmi.|| ||

Rūpāni hi kho passāmi,||
na ca obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi.|| ||

Kevalam pi rattiṃ||
kevalam pi divasaṃ||
kevalam pi rattin-divaṃ.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā, etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu,||
ko paccayo,||
yo’haṃ obhāsam hi kho sañjānāmi||
na ca rūpāni passāmi,||
rūpāni hi kho passāmi||
na ca obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi||
kevalam pi rattiṃ||
kevalam pi divasaṃ||
kevalam pi rattin-divan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā, etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Yasmiṃ kho ahaṃ samaye||
rūpa-nimittaṃ a-mana-sikaritvā||
obhāsa-nimittaṃ mana-sikaromi;||
obhāsaṃ hi kho tasmiṃ samaye sañjānāmi||
na ca rūpāni passāmi.|| ||

Yasmiṃ panāhaṃ samaye||
obhāsa-nimittaṃ amanasi karitvā||
rūpa-nimittaṃ manasi karomi,||
rūpāni hi kho tam hi samaye passāmi||
na ca obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi||
kevalam pi rattiṃ||
kevalam pi divasaṃ||
kevalam pi rattin-divan’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā appamatto ātāpī pahit’atto viharanto||
parittaṃ c’eva obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi||
parittāni ca rūpāni passāmi||
appamānañ c’eva obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi||
appamāṇāni ca rūpāni passāmi,||
kevalam pi rattiṃ||
kevalam pi divasaṃ,||
kevalam pi rattin-divan’ ti.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā, etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ko nu kho hetu,||

yo’haṃ parittaṃ c’eva obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi,||
parittāni ca rūpāni passāmi||
appamāṇañ c’eva obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi,||
appamāṇi ca rūpāni passāmi||
kevalam pi rattiṃ||
kevalam pi divasaṃ||
kevalam pi rattin-divan’ ti?|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā, etad ahosi:|| ||

yasmiṃ kho me samaye paritto samādhi hoti,||
parittaṃ me tasmiṃ samaye cakkhu hoti.|| ||

So’haṃ parittena cakkhunā parittañ ‘c’eva obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi,||
parittāni ca rūpāni passāmi.|| ||

Yasmiṃ pana samaye apparitto me samādhi hoti,||
appamāṇaṃ me tasmiṃ samaye cakkhu hoti,||
so’haṃ appamāṇena cakkhunā appamāṇañ c’eva obhāsaṃ sañjānāmi,||
appamāṇāni ca rūpāni passāmi||
kevalam pi rattiṃ||
kevalam pi divasaṃ||
kevalam pi rattin-divan’ ti.|| ||

Yato kho [162] me Anuruddhā,||
‘Vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi.|| ||

‘Amana-sikāro cittassa upakkileso’ti||
iti viditvā amana-sikāro cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi.|| ||

‘Thīna-middhaṃ cittassa upakkileso’ ti||
iti viditvā thīna-middhaṃ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi.|| ||

iti viditvā atinijjhāyitattaṃ rūpānaṃ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi.|| ||

Tassa mayhaṃ Anuruddhā etad ahosi:|| ||

‘Ye kho me cittassa upakkilesā,||
te me pahīnā.|| ||

Handa dānāhaṃ tividhena samādhiṃ bhāvemī’ ti.|| ||

So kho ahaṃ Anuruddhā sa-vitakkam pi sa-vicāraṃ samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Avitakkam pi vicāramattaṃ samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Avitakkam pi avicāraṃ samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Sappītikam pi samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Nippītikam pi samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Sāta-sahagatam pi samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Upekkhā-sahagatam pi samādhiṃ bhāvesiṃ.|| ||

Yato kho me Anuruddhā,||
sa-vitakko pi sa-vicāro samādhi bhāvito ahosi,||
avitakko pi vicāramanto samādhi bhāvito ahosi,||
avitakko pi avicāro samādhi bhāvito ahosi,||
sappītiko pi samādhi bhāvito ahosi,||
nippītiko pi samādhi bhāvito ahosi,||
sātasahagato pi samādhi bhāvito ahosi,||
upekkhā-sahagato pi samādhi bhāvito ahosi||
ñāṇañ ca pana me dassanaṃ udapādi:|| ||

‘Akuppā me ceto vimutti,||
ayamantimā jāti,||
n’atthi-dāni puna-b-bhavo’ ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā, atta-mano āyasmā Anuruddho Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ ‘abhinandī’ ti.|| ||
