Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthīyaṃ viharati Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.|| ||

2. Tena kho pana samayena Sātissa nāma bhikkhuno kevaṭṭa-puttassa eva-rūpaṃ pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ uppannaṃ hoti:|| ||

“Tathā’haṃ Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan” ti.|| ||

3. Assosuṃ kho sambahulā bhikkhū:|| ||

“Sātissa kira nāma bhikkhuno kevaṭṭa-puttassa eva-rūpaṃ pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ uppannaṃ:|| ||

“Tathā’haṃ Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan” ti.|| ||

Atha kho te bhikkhū yena Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etad avocuṃ:|| ||

Saccaṃ kira te āvuso Sāti eva-rūpaṃ pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ uppannaṃ:|| ||

“Tathā’haṃ Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ byā kho ahaṃ āvuso Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ajānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati, anaññan” ti.|| ||

Atha kho te bhikkhū Sātiṃ bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etasmā pāpakā diṭṭhi-gatā vivecetukāmā||
samanuyuñjanti||
samanugāhanti||
samanubhāsanti:|| ||

Mā evaṃ āvuso Sāti avaca,||
mā Bhagavantaṃ abbh’ācikkhi||
na hi sādhu Bhagavato abbha-k-khānaṃ,||
na hi Bhagavā evaṃ vadeyya.|| ||

An-eka-pariyāyena h’āvuso Sāti paṭicca-samuppannaṃ viññāṇaṃ [257] vuttaṃ Bhagavatā:||
aññatra paccayā n’atthi viññāṇassa sambhavo” ti.|| ||

Evam pi kho Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto tehi bhikkhūhi samanuyuñjiyamāno||
samanugāhiyamāno||
samanubhāsiyamāno||
tad eva pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ thāmasā parāmassa abhinivissa voharati.|| ||

4. “Evaṃ byā kho ahaṃ āvuso Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan” ti.|| ||

Yato kho te bhikkhū nāsakkhiṃsu Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etasmā pāpakā diṭṭhi-gatā vivecetuṃ,||
atha yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkamiṃsu.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdiṃsu.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū Bhagavantaṃ etad avocuṃ:|| ||

“Sātissa nāma bhante bhikkhuno kevaṭṭa-puttassa eva-rūpaṃ pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ uppannaṃ:|| ||

‘Tath’āhaṃ Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan’ ti.|| ||

Assumha kho mayaṃ bhante:|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etad avocumha:|| ||

‘Saccaṃ kira te āvuso Sāti eva-rūpaṃ pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ uppannaṃ:|| ||

“Tath’āhaṃ Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan” ti’?|| ||

Evaṃ vutte bhante Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto amhe etad avoca:|| ||

‘Evaṃ byā kho ahaṃ āvuso Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan’ ti.|| ||

Atha kho mayaṃ bhante Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etasmā pāpakā diṭṭhi-gatā vivecetukāmā||
samanuyuñjimha||
samanugāhimha||
samanubhāsimha:|| ||

‘Mā evaṃ āvuso Sāti avaca,||

Yato kho mayaṃ bhante nāsakkhimha Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etasmā pāpakā diṭṭhi-gatā vivecetuṃ,||
atha mayaṃ etam atthaṃ Bhagavato ārocemā” ti.|| ||

5. Atha kho Bhagavā aññataraṃ bhikkhuṃ āmantesi:|| ||

“Ehi [258] tvaṃ bhikkhu mama vacanena Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ āmantesi:|| ||

‘Satthā taṃ āvuso Sāti āmantetī’ ti”.|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante” ti kho so bhikkhu Bhagavato paṭi-s-sutvā yena Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“‘Satthā taṃ āvuso Sāti āmante’ ti” ti.|| ||

“Evam āvuso” ti kho Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto tassa bhikkhuno paṭi-s-sutvā yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka-m-antaṃ nisinnaṃ kho Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

“Saccaṃ kira te sāti eva-rūpaṃ pāpakaṃ diṭṭhi-gataṃ uppannaṃ:|| ||

‘Tath’āhaṃ Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ajānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan’ ti.|| ||

“Evaṃ byā kho ahaṃ bhante Bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi yathā tad-ev’idaṃ viññāṇaṃ sandhāvati saṃsarati,||
anaññan” ti.|| ||

“Katamaṃ taṃ sāti viññāṇan” ti?|| ||

“Yvāyaṃ bhante vado vedeyyo tatra tatra kalyāṇa-pāpakānaṃ kammānaṃ vipākaṃ paṭisaṃvedetī” ti.|| ||

“Kassa nu kho nāma tvaṃ mogha-purisa mayā evaṃ dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāsi?|| ||

Nanu mayā mogha-purisa aneka-pariyāyena paṭicca-samuppannaṃ viññāṇaṃ vuttaṃ:||
aññatra paccayā n’atthi viññāṇassa sambhavo ti.|| ||

Atha ca pana tvaṃ mogha-purisa attanā duggahītena amhe c’eva abbh’ācikkhasi,||
attāṇañ ca khaṇasi,||
khahuñ ca apuññaṃ pāsavasi.|| ||

Taṃ hi te mogha-purisa bhavissati dīgha-rattaṃ ahitāya dukkhāyā” ti.|| ||

6. Atha kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:|| ||

“Taṃ kiṃ maññatha bhikkhave?|| ||

Api nayaṃ Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto usmīkato pi imasmiṃ Dhamma-Vinaye” ti?|| ||

“Kiṃ hi siyā bhante,||
no h’etaṃ bhante” ti.|| ||

Evaṃ vutte Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto||
tuṇhī-bhūto||
maṅku-bhūto||
patta-k-khandho||
adho-mukho||
pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ tuṇhī-bhūtaṃ||
maṅku-bhūtaṃ||
patta-k-khandhaṃ||
adho-mukhaṃ||
pajjhāyan taṃ appaṭibhānaṃ||
viditvā Sātiṃ bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Paññāyissasi kho tvaṃ mogha-purisa etena sakena pāpakena diṭṭhigatena,||
idhāhaṃ bhikkhū paṭipucchissāmi” ti.|| ||

7. Atha kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:|| ||

“Tumhe pi me bhikkhave evaṃ dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānātha yathā’yaṃ Sāti bhikkhu ke- [259] vaṭṭa-puttā attanā duggahītena amhe c’eva abbh’ācikkhati,||
attāṇañ ca khaṇati,||
bahuñ ca apuññaṃ pasavatī” ti.|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante, aneka-pariyāyena hi no bhante paṭicca-samuppannaṃ viññāṇaṃ vuttaṃ Bhagavatā,||
aññatra paccayā n’atthi viññāṇassa sambhavo” ti.|| ||

“Sādhu bhikkhave,||
sādhu kho me tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānātha.|| ||

Aneka-pariyāyena hi vo bhikkhave paṭicca-samuppannaṃ viññāṇaṃ vuttaṃ mayā,||
aññatra paccayā n’atthi viññāṇassa sambhavo ti.|| ||

Atha ca panāyaṃ Sāti bhikkhu kevaṭṭa-putto attanā duggahītena amhe c’eva abbh’ācikkhati,||
attāṇañ ca khaṇati,||
bahuñ ca apuññaṃ pasavati.|| ||

Taṃ hi tassa mogha-purisassa bhavissati dīgha-rattaṃ ahitāya dukkhāya.|| ||

8. Yañ’ñad-eva bhikkhave paccayaṃ paṭicca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ tena ten’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati:|| ||

Cakkhuñ ca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ,||
cakkhu-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Sotañ ca paṭicca sadde ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ, sota-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Ghānañ ca paṭicca gandhe ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ, ghāna-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati,|| ||

Jivhañ ca paṭicca rase ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ, jivhā-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Kāyañ ca paṭicca phoṭṭhabbe ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ, kāya-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Manañ ca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ, mano-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Seyyathā pi, bhikkhave, yañ’ñad-evā paccayaṃ paṭicca aggi jalati,||
tena ten’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati:|| ||

Kaṭṭhañ ca paṭicca aggi jalati,||
kaṭṭh’aggi t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Sakalikañ ca paṭicca aggi jalati,||
sakalikaggi t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Tiṇañ ca paṭicca aggi jalati,||
tiṇggi t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Gomayañ ca paṭicca aggi jalati,||
gomayaggi t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Thusañ ca paṭicca aggi jalati,||
thusaggi t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Saṅkārañ ca paṭicca aggi jalati,||
saṅkāraggi t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Evam eva kho bhikkhave yañ’ñad-eva paccayaṃ paṭicca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ tena ten’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati:||
cakkhuñ ca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ,||
cakkhu-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Sotañ ca paṭicca sadde ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ, sota-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Ghānañ ca paṭicca gandhe ca uppajjati [260] viññāṇaṃ,||
ghāna-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Jivhañ ca paṭicca rase ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ,||
jivhā-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Kāyañ ca paṭicca phoṭṭhabbe ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ,||
kāya-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

Manañ ca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati viññāṇaṃ,||
mano-viññāṇan-t’eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.|| ||

9. Bhūtam idan ti bhikkhave passathā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-sambhavan’ ti bhikkhave passathā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-nirodhā yaṃ bhūtaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti bhikkhave passathā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

10. “‘Bhūtam idaṃ nossū’ ti bhikkhave kaṅkhāto uppajjati vicikicchā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-sambhavaṃ nossū’ ti bhikkhave kaṅkhāto uppajjati vicikicchā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-nirodhā yaṃ bhūtaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhammaṃ nossū’ ti bhikkhave kaṅkhāto uppajjati vicikicchā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

11. “‘Bhūtam idan’ ti bhikkhave yathā-bhūtaṃ samma-p-paññāya passato yā vicikicchā sā pahīyatī” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-sambhavan’ ti bhikkhave yathā bhūtaṃ samma-p-paññāya passato yā vicikicchā sā pahīyatī” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-nirodhā yaṃ bhūtaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti bhikkhave yathā-bhūtaṃ samma-p-paññāya passato yā vicikicchā sā pahīyatī” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

12. “‘Bhūtam-idan’ ti bhikkhave iti pi vo ettha nibbicikicchā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-sambhavan’ ti bhikkhave iti pi vo ettha nibbicikicchā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-nirodhā yaṃ bhūtaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti bhikkhave iti pi vo ettha nibbicikicchā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

13. “‘Bhūtamidn’ ti bhikkhave yathā-bhūtaṃ samma-p-paññāya su-diṭṭhan” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-sambhavanti bhikkhave yathā bhūtaṃ samma-p-paññāya su-diṭṭhan” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“‘Tad’āhāra-nirodhā yaṃ bhūtaṃ taṃ nirodha-dhamman’ ti bhikkhave yathā-bhūtaṃ samma-p-paññāya su-diṭṭhan” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

14. “Imañ ce tumhe bhikkhave diṭṭhiṃ evaṃ parisuddhaṃ evaṃ pariyodātaṃ allīyetha keḷāyetha||
dhanāyetha||
mamāyetha,||
api nu tumhe bhikkhave kull’ūpamaṃ dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājāneyyātha nitthara-ṇatthāya no gahaṇatthāyā” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

Imañ ce tumhe bhikkhave diṭṭhiṃ evaṃ parisuddhaṃ evaṃ pariyo- [261] dātaṃ na allīyetha||
na keḷāyetha||
na dhanāyetha||
na mamāyetha,||
api nu tumhe bhikkhave kull’ūpamaṃ dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājāneyyātha nittharaṇatthāya no gahaṇatthāyā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

15. Cattāro’me bhikkhave āhārā bhūtānaṃ vā sattāṇaṃ ṭhitiyā sambhavesīnaṃ vā anuggahāya.|| ||

Katame cattāro?|| ||

Kabaliṅkāro āhāro oḷāriko vā sukhumo vā,||
phasso dutiyo,||
mano-sañcetanā tatiyā,||
viññāṇaṃ catutthaṃ.|| ||

16. Ime ca bhikkhave cattāro āhārā||
kiṃ-nidānā||
kiṃ-samudayā||
kiṃ-jātikā||
kiṃ-pabhavā?|| ||

Ime cattāro āhārā||
taṇhā-nidānā||
taṇhā-samudayā||
taṇhā-jātikā||
taṇhā-pabhavā.|| ||

Taṇhā c’āyaṃ bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidānā||
kiṃ-samudayā||
kiṃ-jātikā||
kiṃ-pabhavā?|| ||

Taṇhā vedanā-nidānā||
vedanā-samudayā||
vedanā-jātikā||
vedanā-pabhavā.|| ||

Vedanā c’āyaṃ bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidānā||
kiṃ-samudayā||
kiṃ-jātikā||
kiṃ-pabhavā?|| ||

Vedanā phassa-nidānā||
phassa-samudayā||
phassa-jātikā||
phassa-pabhavā.|| ||

Phasso c’āyaṃ bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidāno||
kiṃ-samudayo||
kiṃ-jātiko||
kiṃ-pabhavo?|| ||

Phasso saḷāyata-nanidāno||
saḷāyatana-samudayo||
saḷāyatana-jātiko||
saḷāyatana-p-pabhavo.|| ||

Saḷāyatanañ c’idaṃ bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidānaṃ||
kiṃ-samudayaṃ||
kiṃ-jātikaṃ||
kiṃ-pabhavaṃ?|| ||

Saḷāyatanaṃ nāma-rūpa-nidānaṃ||
nāma-rūpa-samudayaṃ||
nāma-rūpa-jātikaṃ||
nāma-rūpa-p-pabhavaṃ.|| ||

Nāma-rūpañ c’idaṃ bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidānaṃ||
kiṃ-samudayaṃ||
kiṃ-jātikaṃ||
kiṃ-pabhavaṃ?|| ||

Nāma-rūpaṃ viññāṇa-nidānaṃ||
viññāṇa-samudayaṃ||
viññāṇa-jātikaṃ||
viññāṇa-p-pabhavaṃ.|| ||

Viññāṇañ c’idaṃ bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidānaṃ||
kiṃ-samudayaṃ||
kiṃ-jātikaṃ||
kiṃ-pabhavaṃ?|| ||

Viññāṇaṃ saṅkhāra-nidānaṃ||
saṅkhāra-samudayaṃ||
saṅkhāra-jātikaṃ||
saṅkhāra-p-pabhavaṃ.|| ||

Saṅkhārā c’ime bhikkhave||
kiṃ-nidānā||
kiṃ-samudayā||
kiṃ-jātikā||
kiṃ-pabhavā?|| ||

Saṅkhārā avijjā-nidānā||
avijjā-samudayā||
avijjā-jātikā||
avijjā-pabhavā.|| ||

17. Iti kho bhikkhave avijjā-paccayā saṅkhārā,||
saṅkhāra-paccayā viññāṇaṃ,||
viññāṇa-paccayā nāma-rūpaṃ,||
nāma-rūpa-paccayā saḷāyatanaṃ||
saḷāyatana-paccayā phasso,||
phassa-paccayā vedanā,||
vedanā-paccayā taṇhā,||
taṇhā-paccayā upādānaṃ,||
upādāna-paccayā bhavo,||
bhava-paccayā jāti,||
jāti-paccayā jarā-maraṇaṃ||
soka parideva dukkha domanass’upāyāsā sambhavanti.|| ||

Evam etassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa samudayo hoti.|| ||

18. ‘Jāti-paccayā jarā-maraṇan’ ti||
iti kho pan’etaṃ vuttaṃ.|| ||

Jāti-paccayā nu kho bhikkhave jarā-maraṇaṃ no vā,||
kathaṃ vo ettha hotī” ti?|| ||

“Jāti-paccayā bhante jarā-maraṇaṃ,||
evaṃ no ettha hoti:||
jāti-paccayā jarā-maraṇan” ti.|| ||

“‘Bhava- paccayā jātī’ ti||

“‘Taṇhā-paccayā upādānan’ ti||

“Taṇhā-paccayā bhante upādānaṃ||

jāti-nirodhā jarā-maraṇaṃ||
soka parideva dukkha domanass’upāyāsā nirujjhanti.|| ||

“‘Saḷāyatana-nirodhā phassa-nirodho’ ti||

saṅkhāra-nirodhā viññāṇa-nirodho,||
viññāṇa-nirodhā nāma-rūpa-nirodho,||
nāma-rūpa-nirodhā saḷāyatana-nirodho,||
saḷāyatana-nirodhā phassa-nirodho,||
phassa-nirodhā vedanā-nirodho,||
vedanā-nirodhā taṇhā-nirodho,||
taṇhā-nirodhā upādāna-nirodho,||
upādāna-nirodhā bhava-nirodho,||
bhava-nirodhā jāti-nirodho,||
jāti-nirodhā jarā maraṇaṃ||
soka parideva dukkha domanass’upāyāsā nirujjhanti.|| ||

23. Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā evaṃ passantā [265] pubbantaṃ vā paṭidhāveyyātha:||
ahosimha nu kho mayaṃ atītam-addhānaṃ,||
na nu kho ahesimha atītam addhānaṃ,||
kin nu kho ahesimha atītam addhānaṃ,||
kathan nu kho ahesimha atītam addhānaṃ,||
kiṃ hutvā||
kiṃ ahesimha nu kho mayaṃ atītam addhānan” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā||
evaṃ passantā||
aparantaṃ vā ādhāveyyātha:|| ||

Bhavissāma nu kho mayaṃ anāgatam-addhānaṃ,||
na nu kho bhavissāma anāgatam-addhānaṃ,||
kin nu kho bhavissāma anāgatam-addhānaṃ,||
kathan nu kho bhavissāma anāgatam-addhānaṃ,||
kiṃ hutvā kiṃ bhavissāma nu kho mayaṃ anāgatam-addhānan” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā||
evaṃ passantā||
etarahi vā pacc’uppannaṃ addhānaṃ ajjhattaṃ kathaṃ-kathī assatha:||
ahannukhosmi,||
no nu khosmi,||
kin nu khosmi,||
kathan nu khosmi,||
ayan nu kho satto kuto āgato,||
so kuhiṅgāmī bhavissatī” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

24. “Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā||
evaṃ passantā||
evaṃ vadeyyātha:||
Satthā no garu,||
Satthu-gāravena ca mayaṃ||
evaṃ vademā” ti.|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā||
evaṃ passantā||
evaṃ vadeyyātha:||
samaṇo no evam āha,||
samaṇa-vacanena ca mayaṃ||
evaṃ vademā” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā||
evaṃ passantā||
aññaṃ Satthāraṃ uddiseyyāthā” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“Api nu tumhe bhikkhave evaṃ jānantā||
evaṃ passantā||
yāni tāni puthusamaṇa-brāhmaṇānaṃ vatakotuhala-maṅgalāni,||
tāni sārato paccāgaccheyyāthā” ti?|| ||

“No h’etaṃ bhante.”|| ||

“Nanu bhikkhave yad-eva tumhākaṃ||
sāmaṃ ñātaṃ||
sāmaṃ diṭṭhaṃ||
sāmaṃ viditaṃ||
tad eva tumhe vadethā” ti?|| ||

“Evaṃ bhante.”|| ||

Upanītā kho me tumhe bhikkhave iminā sandiṭṭhikena dhammena akālikena||
ehi-passikena||
opanayikena||
paccattaṃ||
veditabbena viññūhi.|| ||

Sandiṭṭhiko ayaṃ bhikkhave dhammo akāliko||
ehi-passiko||
opanayiko||
paccattaṃ||
veditabbo viññūhīti.|| ||

Iti yan taṃ vuttaṃ,||
idam etaṃ paṭicca vuttaṃ.|| ||

26. Tiṇṇaṃ kho pana bhikkhave sannipātā gabbhassāvakkanti hoti:|| ||

Idha mātā-pitaro sanni-patitā honti,||
mātā ca na utunī hoti,||
gandhabbo ca na pacc’upaṭṭhito hoti,||
n’eva tāva gab- [266] bhassāvakkanti hoti.|| ||

Idha mātā-pitaro ca sanni-patitā honti,||
mātā ca utunī hoti,||
gandhabbo ca na pacc’upaṭṭhito hoti,||
n’eva tāva gabbhassāvakkanti hoti.|| ||

Yato ca kho bhikkhave mātā-pitaro sanni-patitā honti,||
mātā ca utunī hoti,||
gandhabbo ca pacc’upaṭṭhito hoti,||
evaṃ tiṇṇaṃ sannipātā gabbhassāvakkanti hoti.|| ||

27. Tam enaṃ bhikkhave mātā nava vā dasa vā māse gabbhaṃ kucchinā pariharati mahatā saṃsayena garum-bhāraṃ.|| ||

Tam enaṃ bhikkhave mātā navannaṃ vā dasannaṃ vā māsānaṃ accayena vijāyati mahatā saṃsayena garum-bhāraṃ.|| ||

Tam enaṃ jātaṃ samānaṃ sakena lohitena poseti.|| ||

Lohitaṃ h’etaṃ bhikkhave ariyassa vinaye yad idaṃ mātuthaññaṃ.|| ||

28. Sa kho so bhikkhave kumāro vuddhim-anvāya indriyānaṃ paripākam-anvāya yāni tāni kumārakānaṃ kīḷāpanakāni tehi kīḷati:||
seyyath’īdaṃ -||
vaṅkakaṃ||
ghaṭikaṃ||
mokkha-cikaṃ||
ciṅgulakaṃ||
pattāḷhakaṃ||
rathakaṃ||
dhanukaṃ.|| ||

29. Sa kho so bhikkhave kumāro vuddhim-anvāya indriyānaṃ paripākam-anvāya||
pañcahi kāma-guṇehi samappito samaṅgi-bhūto parivāreti:||
cakkhu-viññeyyehi rūpehi||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi,|| ||

sota-viññeyyehi saddehi||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi,|| ||

ghāna-viññeyyehi gandhehi||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi,|| ||

jivhā-viññeyyehi rasehi||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi,|| ||

kāya-viññeyyehi phoṭṭhabbehi||
iṭṭhehi kantehi manāpehi piyarūpehi kām’ūpasaṃhitehi rajanīyehi.|| ||

30. So cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā piyarūpe rūpe sāra-j-jati,||
appiya-rūpe rūpe vyāpajjati.|| ||

Anupatthikakāyasati ca viharati paritta cetaso,||
tañ ca ceto-vimuttiṃ paññā-vimuttiṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti yatth’assa te pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.|| ||

So evaṃ anurodha-virodhaṃ samāpanno yaṃ kiñci vedanaṃ vedeti||
sukhaṃ vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkha-m-asukhaṃ vā,||
so taṃ vedanaṃ abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati.|| ||

Tassa taṃ vedanaṃ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiṭṭhato uppajjati nandī||
yā vedanāsu nandī tad-upadānaṃ.|| ||

Tass’upādāna paccayā bhavo,||
bhava-paccayā jāti,||
jāti-paccayā jarā-maraṇaṃ||
soka parideva dukkha-domanass’upāyāsā sambhavanti.|| ||

Sotena saddaṃ sutvā piyarūpe sadde sāra-j-jati,||
appiya-rūpe sadde vyāpajjati.|| ||

Anupatthikakāyasati ca viharati paritta cetaso,||
tañ ca ceto-vimuttiṃ paññā-vimuttiṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti yatth’assa te pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.|| ||

So evaṃ anurodha-virodhaṃ samāpanno yaṃ kiñci vedanaṃ vedeti||
sukhaṃ vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkha-m-asukhaṃ vā,||

tañ ca ceto-vimuttiṃ paññā-vimuttiṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti yatth’assa te pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.|| ||

tañ ca ceto-vimuttiṃ paññā-vimuttiṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti yatth’assa te pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.|| ||

Anupatthikakāyasati ca viharati paritta cetaso,||
tañ ca ceto-vimuttiṃ paññā-vimuttiṃ yathā-bhūtaṃ na-p-pajānāti yatth’assa te pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.|| ||

So evaṃ anurodha-virodhaṃ samāpanno yaṃ kiñci vedanaṃ vedeti||
sukhaṃ vā dukkhaṃ vā adukkha-m-asukhaṃ vā,||
so taṃ vedanaṃ abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati,||
tassa taṃ vedanaṃ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiṭṭhato uppajjati nandī||
yā vedanāsu nandī tad-upadānaṃ.|| ||

Tass’upādāna paccayā bhavo,||
bhava-paccayā jāti,||
jāti-paccayā jarā-maraṇaṃ||
soka parideva dukkha-domanass’upāyāsā sambhavanti.|| ||

Evam etassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa samudayo hoti.|| ||

Idha bhikkhave Tathāgato loke uppajjati:||
arahaṃ||
Sammā Sambuddho||
vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno||
Sugato||
loka-vidū anuttaro||
purisa-damma-sārathī||
Satthā deva-manussānaṃ||
Buddho||
Bhagavā.|| ||

So imaṃ lokaṃ sa-devakaṃ sa-Mārakaṃ sa-brahmakaṃ sa-s-samaṇa-brāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sa-deva-manussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchi-katvā pavedeti.|| ||

So dhammaṃ deseti:|| ||

Ādi-kalyāṇaṃ||
majjhe-kalyāṇaṃ||
pariyosāna-kalyāṇaṃ||
sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ,||
kevala-paripuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ pakāseti.|| ||

Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapati-putto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto.|| ||

So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā Tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati.|| ||

So tena saddhā-paṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisañcikkhati:|| ||

Sambādho gharāvāso rajo-patho,||
abbhokāso pabbajjā,||
na-y-idaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekanta-paripuṇṇaṃ ekanta-parisuddaṃ saṅkhalikhitaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ carituṃ,||
yan nūn-ā-haṃ kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyanti.|| ||

So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhoga-k-khandhaṃ pahāya,||
appaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya||
mahantaṃ vā ñāti-parivaṭṭaṃ pahāya||
kesa-massuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno bhikkhūnaṃ sikkhā-sājiva-samāpanno pāṇ-ā-tipātaṃ pahāya||
pāṇ-ā-tipātā paṭivirato hoti,||
nihita-daṇḍo nihita-sattho lajji dayā-panno sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī viharati.|| ||

Adinn’ādānaṃ pahāya||
adinn’ādānā [268] paṭivirato hoti,||
dinn’ādāyī dinna-pāṭikaṅkhī athenena suci-bhūtena attanā viharati.|| ||

Abrahma-cariyaṃ pahāya||
brahma-cārī hoti ārā-cārī,||
virato methunā gāma-dhammā.|| ||

Musā-vādaṃ pahāya||
musā-vādā paṭivirato hoti,||
sacca-vādī sacca-sandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa.|| ||

Pisunaṃ vācaṃ pahāya||
pisunāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,||
ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya,||
amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya,||
iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā,||
samagg’ārāmo samaggarato samagga-nandi samagga-karaṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya||
pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti,||
yā sā vācā neḷā kaṇṇa-sukhā pemanīyā hadayaṃgamā porī bahu-jana-kantā bahu-jana-manāpā,||
tathā-rūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti.|| ||

Sampha-p-palāpaṃ pahāya||
sampha-p-palāpā paṭivirato hoti,||
kāla-vādī bhūta-vādī attha-vādī dhamma-vādī vinaya-vādī,||
nidhāna-vatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyanta-vatiṃ attha-saṃhitaṃ.|| ||

So bījagāma-bhūta-gāma-samārambhā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Eka-bhattiko hoti ratt’ūparato,||
virato vikāla-bhojanā.|| ||

Nacca-gīta-vādita-visūka-dassanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Mālā-gandha-vilepanadhāraṇa-maṇḍana-vibhūsana-ṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Uccā-sayana-mahā-sayanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Jātarūpa-rajatapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmakadhaññapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Āmakamaṃsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Itthikumārikapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dāsidāsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ajeḷakapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kukkuṭasūkarapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Hatthi-gavāssa-vaḷavāpaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Khetta-vatthupaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Dūteyyapahīnagaman-ā-nuyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Kaya-vikkayā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Tulā-kūṭa-kaṃsakuṭa-mānakūṭā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Ukkoṭana-vañcana-nikati-sāciyogā paṭivirato hoti.|| ||

Chedana-vadha-bandhana-viparāmosa-ālopa-sahasākārā paṭivirato hoti.

So santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihārikena cīvarena,||
kucchi-parihārikena piṇḍa-pātena,||
so yena yen’eva pakkamati,||
samādāy’eva pakkamati.|| ||

Seyyathā pi nāma pakkhi sakuṇo yena yen’eva ḍeti,||
sapattabhāro va ḍeti.|| ||

Evam evaṃ bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāya-parihārikena cīvarena,||
kucchi-parihārikena piṇḍa-pātena,||
yena yen’eva pakkamati,||
samādāy’eva pakkamati.|| ||

So iminā [269] ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajja-sukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

So cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇam-enaṃ cakkhu’ndriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati cakkhu’ndriyaṃ,||
cakkhu’ndriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ sot’indriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati sot’indriyaṃ,||
sotendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So ghānena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ ghānendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati ghānendriyaṃ,||
ghān’endriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ jivhendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati jivhendriyaṃ,||
jivhendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phūsitvā na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ kāyendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati kāyendriyaṃ,||
kāyendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.

So manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimitta-g-gāhī hoti n-ā-nu-vyañjana-g-gāhī,||
yatvādhi-karaṇamenaṃ manendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā-dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ,||
tassa saṃvaraṃ paṭipajjati,||
rakkhati manendriyaṃ,||
manendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.|| ||

So iminā ariyena indriya-saṃvarena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ abyāsekasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.|| ||

So abhikkante paṭikkante sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
ālokite vilokite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
sammiñjite pasārite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
saṅghāṭipatta-cīvara-dhāraṇe sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
uccāra-passāvakamme sampajāna-kārī hoti,||
gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhī-bhāve sampajāna-kārī hoti.|| ||

So iminā ca ariyena sīla-k-khandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriya-saṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena sati-sampajaññena samannāgato vivittaṃ sen’āsanaṃ bhajati,||
araññaṃ||
rukkha-mūlaṃ||
pabbataṃ||
kandaraṃ||
giri-guhaṃ||
susānaṃ vana-pattaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ.|| ||

So pacchā-bhattaṃ piṇḍa-pāta-paṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā,||
ujuṃ kāyaṃ panidhāya,||
parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭha-petvā.|| ||

So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya||
vigat-ā-bhijjhena cetasā viharati,||
abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vyāpāda-padosaṃ pahāya||
avyāpanna-citto viharati,
sabba-pāṇa-bhūta-hit-ā-nukampī||
Vyāpāda-padosā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Thīna-middaṃ pahāya||
vigatatīnamiddo viharati,||
āloka-saññi sato sampajāno||
thīna-middā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Uddhacca-kukkuccaṃ pahāya||
anuddhato viharati,||
ajjhattaṃ vūpasanta-citto,||
uddhacca-kukkuccā cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

Vici-kicchaṃ pahāya||
tiṇṇa-vici-kiccho viharati,||
akathaṃ-kathi kusalesu dhammesu,||
vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti.|| ||

[270] So ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahāya cetaso upakkilese paññāya dubbalī-karaṇe,||
vivicc’eva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Idam pi vuccati bhikkhave,||
Tathāgatapadaṃ iti pi,||
Tathāgatanisevitaṃ iti pi,||
Tathāgatārañjitaṃ iti pi.|| ||

Na tv’eva tāva ariya-sāvako niṭṭhaṃ gacchati:|| ||

‘Sammā Sambuddho Bhagavā,||
svākkhāto Bhagavatā dhammo,||
su-paṭipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho’ ti.|| ||

Puna ca paraṃ, bhikkhave,||
bhikkhu vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā||
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ||
avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ||
samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ||
dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Idam pi vuccati bhikkhave,||
Tathāgatapadaṃ iti pi,||
Tathāgatanisevitaṃ iti pi,||
Tathāgatārañjitaṃ iti pi.|| ||

Na tv’eva tāva ariya-sāvako niṭṭhaṃ gacchati:|| ||

‘Sammā Sambuddho Bhagavā,||
svākkhāto Bhagavatā dhammo,||
su-paṭipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho’ ti.|| ||

Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati||
sato ca sampajāno sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti||
yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:|| ||

‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’|| ||

ti taṃ tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Idam pi vuccati bhikkhave,||
Tathāgatapadaṃ iti pi,||
Tathāgatanisevitaṃ iti pi,||
Tathāgatārañjitaṃ iti pi.|| ||

Na tv’eva tāva ariya-sāvako niṭṭhaṃ gacchati:|| ||

‘Sammā Sambuddho Bhagavā,||
svākkhāto Bhagavatā dhammo,||
su-paṭipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho’ ti.|| ||

pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ atthaṅ-gamā||

41. Imaṃ kho me tumhe bhikkhave saṅkhittena taṇhā-saṅkhaya-vimuttiṃ dhāretha,||
Sātiṃ pana [271] bhikkhuṃ kevaṭṭa-puttaṃ mahātaṇhājāla taṇhā saṅghāṭa paṭimukkan” ti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā.|| ||

Attamanā te bhikkhū Bhagavato bhāsitaṃ “abhinandun” ti.|| ||
