Ekaṃ samasaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthīyaṃ viharati Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.|| ||

Atha kho Piṅgalakoccho brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten’upasaṅkami.|| ||

Upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi.|| ||

Sammādanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vīti-sāretvā eka-m-antaṃ nisīdi.|| ||

Eka mantaṃ nisinno kho Piṅgalakoccho brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

2. “Ye’me bho Gotama samaṇa-brāhmaṇā saṅghino gaṇino gaṇācariyā ñātā yasassino titthakarā sādhusammatā bahu-janassa,||
seyyath’īdaṃ: Pūraṇo Kassapo,||
Makkhalī Gosālo,||
Ajito Kesakambalo,||
Pakudho Kacchāyano,||
Sañjayo Belaṭṭhiputto,||
Nigaṇṭho Nātaputto,||
sabbe te sakāya paṭiññāya abbhaññaṃsu:||
sabb’eva nābbhaññaṃsu,||
udāhu ekacce abbhaññaṃsu,||
ekacce na abbhaññaṃsū” ti.|| ||

3. “Alaṃ brāhmaṇa, tiṭṭhate taṃ:||
‘Sabbe te sakāya paṭiññāya abbhaññaṃsu,||
sabb’eva nābbhaññaṃsu,||
udāhu ekacce abbhaññaṃsu,||
ekacce na abbhaññaṃsū’ ti.|| ||

Dhammaṃ te brāhmaṇa desissāmi,||
taṃ suṇāhi,||
sādhukaṃ manasi karohi,||
bhāsissāmī” ti.|| ||

“Evaṃ bho” ti kho Piṅgalakoccho brāhmaṇo Bhagavato paccassosi Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

4. Seyyathā pi brāhmaṇa puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
ati-k-kamm’eva sāraṃ||
ati-k-kamma phegguṃ||
ati-k-kamma tacaṃ||
ati-k-kamma papaṭikaṃ||
sākhāpalāsaṃ chetvā ādāya pakkameyya||
‘sāran’ ti mañña-māno,||
tam enaṃ cakkhumā puriso disvā evaṃ vadeyya:|| ||

‘Na vatāyaṃ bhavaṃ puriso aññāsi sāraṃ,||
na aññāsi phegguṃ,||
na aññāsi tacaṃ,||
na aññāsi papaṭikaṃ,||
na aññāsi sākhāpalāsaṃ,||
tathā h’ayaṃ bhavaṃ puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
ati-k-kamm’eva sāraṃ||
ati-k-kamma phegguṃ||

‘sāran’ ti mañña-māno,||
tam enaṃ cakkhumā puriso disvā evaṃ vadeyya:|| ||

‘Na vatāyaṃ bhavaṃ puriso aññāsi sāraṃ,||
na aññāsi phegguṃ,||
na aññāsi tacaṃ,||
na aññāsi papaṭikaṃ,||
na aññāsi sākhāpalāsaṃ,||

‘sāran’ ti jānamāno,||
tam enaṃ cakkhumā puriso disvā evaṃ vadeyya:|| ||

‘Aññāsi vatāyaṃ bhavaṃ puriso sāraṃ,||
aññāsi phegguṃ,||
aññāsi tacaṃ,||
aññāsi papaṭikaṃ,||
aññāsi sākhāpalāsaṃ,||
tathā h’ayaṃ bhavaṃ puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
sāraṃ yeva chetvā [200] ādāya pakkanto||
‘sāran’ ti jānamāno||
yañ c’assa sārena sārakaraṇīyaṃ||
tañ c’assa atthaṃ anubhavissatī’ ti.|| ||

9. Evam eva kho brāhmaṇa idh’ekacco puggalo saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti:|| ||

‘Otiṇṇo’mhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi,||
dukkho tiṇṇo dukkha-pareto,||
app’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ ti.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno lābha-sakkāra-silokaṃ abhinibbatteti,||
so tena lābha-sakkāra-silokena atta-mano hoti paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tena lābha-sakkāra-silokena attān’ukkaṃseti paraṃ vambheti:|| ||

‘Aham asmi lābhī silokavā,||
ime pan’aññe bhikkhū appaññātā appesakkhā’ ti.|| ||

Lābha-sakkāra-silokena ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya na chandaṃ janeti na vāyamati,||
olīnavuttiko ca hoti sāthaliko.|| ||

Seyyathā pi so brāhmaṇa puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
ati-k-kamm’eva sāraṃ||
ati-k-kamma pheggu||
ati-k-kamma tacaṃ||
ati-k-kamma papaṭikaṃ||
sākhāpalāsaṃ chetvā ādāya pakkanto||
‘sāran’ ti mañña-māno,||
yañ c’assa sārena sārakaraṇīyaṃ||
tañ c’assa atthaṃ nānubhavissa’ ti,||
tath’ūpamāhaṃ brāhmaṇa imaṃ puggalaṃ vadāmi.|| ||

10. Idha pana brāhmaṇa ekacco puggalo saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti:|| ||

so tāya sīla-sampadāya atta-mano hoti paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tāya sīla-sampadāya attān’ukkaṃseti paraṃ vambheti:|| ||

‘Aham asmi sīlavā kalyāṇa-dhammo,||
ime pan’aññe bhikkhū du-s-sīlā pāpa-dhammā’ ti,||
sīla-sampadāya ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ [201] dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya na chandaṃ janeti na vāyamati.|| ||

Olīnavuttiko ca hoti sāthaliko.|| ||

Seyyathā pi so brāhmaṇa puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
ati-k-kamm’eva sāraṃ||
ati-k-kamma phegguṃ||
ati-k-kamma tacaṃ||
papaṭikaṃ chetvā ādāya pakkanto||
‘sāran’ ti mañña-māno,||
yañ c’assa sārena sārakaraṇīyaṃ||
tañ c’assa atthaṃ nānubhavissati,||
tath’ūpamāhaṃ brāhmaṇa imaṃ puggalaṃ vadāmi.|| ||

so tāya samādhi-sampadāya atta-mano hoti paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tāya samādhi-sampadāya attān’ukkaṃseti paraṃ vambheti:|| ||

ime pan’aññe bhikkhū asamāhitā vibbhanta-cittā’ ti||
samādhi-sampadāya ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya na chandaṃ janeti na vāyamati,||
olīnavuttiko ca hoti sāthaliko.|| ||

dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto,||
app’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ ti.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito samāno lābha-sakkāra-silokaṃ abhinibbatteti,||
so tena lābha-sakkāra-silokena na atta-mano hoti na paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tena lābha-sakkāra-silokena na attān’ukkaṃseti na paraṃ vambheti,||
lābha-sakkāra-silokena ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati,||

sīla-sampadāya ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati,||
anolīnavuttiko ca hoti asāthaliko.|| ||

So ñāṇa-dassanaṃ ārādheti,||
so tena ñāṇa-dassanena atta-mano hoti paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tena ñāṇa-dassanena attān’ukkaṃseti paraṃ vambheti:|| ||

‘Aham asmi jānaṃ passaṃ viharāmi||
Ime pan’aññe bhikkhū ajānaṃ apassaṃ viharantī’ ti,||
ñāṇa-dassanena ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya na chandaṃ janeti na vāyamati,||
olīnavuttiko ca hoti sāthaliko.|| ||

Seyyathā pi so brāhmaṇa puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
ati-k-kamm’eva sāraṃ||
phegguṃ chetvā ādāya pakkanto||
‘sāran’ ti mañña-māno,||
yañ c’assa sārena sārakaraṇīyaṃ tañ c’assa atthaṃ nānubhavissati,||
tath’ūpamāhaṃ brāhmaṇa imaṃ puggalaṃ vadāmi.|| ||

13. Idha pana brāhmaṇa ekacco puggalo saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabba-jito hoti:|| ||

‘Otiṇṇo’mhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi,||
dukkh’otiṇṇo dukkha-pareto,||
app’eva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkha-k-khandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethāti.|| ||

So evaṃ pabba-jito [203] samāno lābha-sakkāra-silokaṃ abhinibbatteti,||
so tena lābha-sakkāra-silokena na atta-mano hoti na paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tena lābha-sakkāra-silokena na attān’ukkaṃseti na paraṃ vambheti,||
lābha-sakkāra-silokena ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati,||
anolīnavuttiko ca hoti asāthaliko.|| ||

so tāya sīla-sampadāya atta-mano hoti no ca kho paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tāya sīla-sampadāya na attān’ukkaṃseti na paraṃ vambheti:||

So ñāṇa-dassanaṃ ārādheti,||
so tena ñāṇa-dassanena atta-mano hoti no ca kho paripuṇṇa-saṅkappo,||
so tena ñāṇa-dassanena na attān’ukkaṃseti na paraṃ vambheti,||
ñāṇa-dassanena ca ye aññe dhammā uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca tesaṃ dhammānaṃ sacchi-kiriyāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati,||
Anolīnavuttiko ca hoti asāthaliko.|| ||

14. Katame ca brāhmaṇa dhammā ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca?|| ||

Idha brāhmaṇa bhikkhu vivicc’eva kāmehi||
vivicca akusalehi dhammehi||
sa-vitakkaṃ sa-vicāraṃ||
viveka-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ||
paṭhamaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītatarā ca.|| ||

15. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā||
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ||
cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ||
avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ||
samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ||
dutiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

16. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
pītiyā ca virāgā||
upekkhako ca viharati||
sato ca sampajāno||
sukhañ ca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti||
yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti:||
‘Upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ ti||
tatiyaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi [204] kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

17. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
sukhassa ca pahānā||
dukkhassa ca pahānā||
pubbe va somanassa-domanassānaṃ attha-gamā||
adukkha-ṃ-asukhaṃ||
upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ||
catutthaṃ-jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

18. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
sabbaso rūpa-saññānaṃ samati-k-kamā||
paṭigha-saññānaṃ attha-gamā||
nānatta-saññānaṃ amanasikārā||
‘Ananto ākāso’ ti||
Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

19. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
sabbaso Ākāsanañ-c’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma||
‘Anantaṃ viññāṇan’ ti||
Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

20. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
sabbaso Viññāṇañ-c’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma||
‘N’atthi kiñcī’ ti||
Ākiñcaññ’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

21. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
sabbaso Ākiñcaññ’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma||
N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

22. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu||
sabbaso N’eva-saññā-nā-saññ’āyatanaṃ samati-k-kamma||
saññā-vedayita-nirodhaṃ upasampajja viharati||
paññāya c’assa disvā āsavā parikkhīṇā honti.|| ||

Ayam pi kho brāhmaṇa dhammo ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritaro ca paṇītataro ca.|| ||

Ime kho brāhmaṇa dhammā ñāṇa-dassanena uttaritarā ca paṇītatarā ca.|| ||

Seyyathā pi so brāhmaṇa puriso sāratthiko||
sāragavesī||
sārapariyesanaṃ||
caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiṭṭhato sāravato||
sāraṃ yeva chetvā ādāya pakkanto||
‘sāran’ ti jānamāno,||
yañ c’assa sārena sārakaraṇīyaṃ tañ c’assa atthaṃ anubhavissati,||
tath’ūpamāhaṃ brāhmaṇa imaṃ puggalaṃ vadāmi.|| ||

23. Iti kho brāhmaṇa na-y-idaṃ Brahma-cariyaṃ lābha-sakkāra-silokānisaṃsaṃ,||
na sīla-sampadānisaṃsaṃ,||
na samādhi-sampadānisaṃsaṃ,||
na ñāṇa-dassanānisaṃsaṃ.|| ||

[205] ca kho ayaṃ brāhmaṇa akuppā ceto-vimutti,||
etadattham-idaṃ brāhmaṇa Brahma-cariyaṃ,||
etaṃ sāraṃ,||
etaṃ pariyosānan” ti.|| ||

24. Evaṃ vutte Piṅgalakoccho brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ etad avoca:|| ||

“Abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama!|| ||

Abhikkantaṃ bho Gotama!|| ||

Seyyathā pi bho Gotama nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya,||
paṭi-c-channaṃ vā vivareyya,||
mūḷhassa vā Magga ācikkheyya,||
andha-kāre vā tela-pajjotaṃ dhāreyya:||
cakkhu-manto rūpāni dakkhintī ti.|| ||

Evam evaṃ bhotā Gotamena aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.|| ||

Es’āhaṃ bhavantaṃ Gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi||
Dhammañ ca||
bhikkhu-saṅghañ ca.|| ||

Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ Gotamo dhāretu ajja-t-agge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan” ti.|| ||
